Read his biography or his introduction to toads for supper.
He mentioned his pains of losing a son.
OK. I read the book a long time ago. It is one of the books I want to read again now that I am an adult.

Thank you for the information.

prof had two sons.
The elder one died during childhood.
The professor was a famous writer. How come no one knows about the other child that died in childhood?

Prof also wrote about the civil war but never did he implicitly write about losing a child.

Osita is the only child everyone knows.

My dad has his books in his library. I read Toads for supper years ago but I can't seem to remember the storyline. I think he was also the author of one novel "My Mercedes is bigger than yours". Such a phenomenal writer he was, RIP great icon
It was Nkem Nwankwo that wrote "My Mercedes is Bigger than Yours"

He was a close friend of my father's.

This is sad news for me.

I know it must happen, but all those our legends are going one by one.

Chinua Achebe

Chukwuemeka Ike

May God keep my Soyinka for some more years. At least, until I get to shake his hand and have an autographed copy of one of his books, preferably Ake.

Of course the South West is a classic and wonderful example of where we have religious harmony playing out well. In Eastern Nigeria, for instance, a Christian - male or female - who marries a Muslim will be criticised and maybe called names but that is usually where it ends.

In the North, such persons - to a large extent - will face physical attacks or even death.

Therefore, using only the South West is not a representative sample and thus your conclusions may not be totally correct.

I still urge you to read the Sudanese woman's story
I am not interested in the statistics.

If you checked my earliest posts, I joined the argument because someone was trying to make it seem like Muslims were incapable of the slightest form of tolerance. So, I mentioned the Southwest.

But how would you know that someone is a thief when there are no evidences?

From the time he entered service as a very young man to date, no one or firm or association has ever accused Buhari of corruption.

The same cannot be said about the likes of Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Atiku Abubakar.

It is either Buhari is an invisible thief or he is just not corrupt.

Do you know what it means to take care of a girl who is pregnant, do you know the number of times she is expected to visit the hospital for antenatal care? She didn't get all these because money no dey, if una like stay away from sex, if you must pregnant a girl be ready to Carter for her pregnancy
So, she starved because she didn't get enough care during pregnancy?

Then, explain to me how she managed to give birth safely and how the baby survived up to and past its naming day?

If she were starving, she wouldn't have gotten enough energy to survive her labor. Even in the North where there are a lot of poor women and girls impregnated out of wedlock, many of whom don't even know what antenatal means, they still give birth and have more children without starving to death.

The fact still remains they are poor and could not cater for her and pregnancy period
Then, if it is so easy to starve to death due to poverty, then why didn't they also starve to death?

Why didn't the baby also starve to death prior to his naming since the baby needs breast milk and a mother has to feed to breastfeed?

Starvation is out of the question.

Not the grandmother but the mother of the guy that brings food after she must have starved, I can confidently tell you had it been the family of Ibrahim are rich such a thing would not have happened, they would have taken care of her even without her been in her parent's home
Bro, please, stop mentioning this starvation thing.

No matter how poor the parents are, she couldn't have starved to death. How come she starved to death and they didn't?

By drinking only water everyday without eating, you can stay alive for a month.

There are a lot of extremely poor people in Nigeria. About 80 million extremely poor Nigerians. Why don't we have cases of death by starvation?

She died of starvation from what the story says the parents are poor and could not possibly provide for her, it's simple kids stay away from premature sex they won't listen so whatever comes out they bear it
The grandmother of the baby said they always sent food through Ibrahim (the father of the baby).

So, how did she manage to starve to death?

Moral lesson children listen and obey your parents so that your days will be long that is in the Bible had it been she listened to them she wouldn't have died also on the write up you find where the father said that no parents would kill their child and that is true and I don't think any parents will kill their child no matter what , in this case the girls parents are very poor and they could not even afford her hospital bill maybe is even difficult for them to feed too
It can happen unpremeditated.

For instance, many accounts reveal that these parents were used to physically abusing their daughter. Except there is a gang up against them by their neighbors, these eyewitnesses' accounts will help the court in no small ways when this couple finally appears before a judge.

So, a parent can mistakenly kill their child while beating them.

When my son impregnated Amaka, I didn’t reject the pregnancy. I was already used to seeing them together. When it was clear to me that Ibrahim was the owner of the pregnancy, I started taking care of the girl as my daughter-in-law.

Madam, that's not how it is in Igbo culture. If you want to get a daughter-in-law, first approach the parents and pay dowries
Did you read the story at all?

That she had been used to seeing them together does not mean she had to immediately go and see the girl's parents.

But when the girl got pregnant, and her son accepted the pregnancy, she began to treat the girl like her own daughter (daughter-in-law).

Interfaith marriage is permissible ONLY for Muslim men..
When a Muslim man marries a Christian woman, the children are - in the eyes of Islam - Muslims.

But a Muslim woman is FORBIDDEN from marrying outside Islam

If that's your definition of religious tolerance, then it's skewed
Christianity is not any better.

And, as a matter of fact, I know of some Muslim women who married Christian men.

Typical! How logical your last say is!
That is the truth.

Religion and tolerance don't go very well together.

No Christian would allow their child become a traditional worshipper or an atheist.

And when I say Christian, I don't mean Christians who rank high on extrinsic religious motivation.

It is the same with Islam.

However, there is a little bit more tolerance to be found with Muslims than Christians. There are many Muslims, especially in the Southwest, who have lived well with family members who are either traditional worshippers or Christians.

Minister of Works, Raji Fashola married a Christian and sometimes goes to church with her but she has never gone to mosque with him before.

Same with Bola Ahmed Tinubu whose wife (Remi Tinubu) is not just a Christian but is also a pastor.

There are many performing arts, and theatre just happens to be one of these performing arts.

It is not only through violence that you show a lack of tolerance. That is the mistake you Christians make. You think because you don't kill backsliders like Muslims, then you are more tolerant.

You yourself wrote that you would be displeased with your son's choice.

Why should you be displeased?

You are displeased because you would rather your son remained a Christian. You don't want Islam to thrive.

You ought not to be displeased.

So UI that calls her own Theatre Arts doesn't understand what the course is all about. You keep saying "it's common sense" and it's hard for you to know which is which and which is not.

I will quit arguing with you here since it's obvious you don't know the difference and correlation between the two.
And mind you, the best university in Africa, University of Cape Town calls it Department of Theatre and Performance.

The best university in the world, Harvard University calls it Department of Theatre, Dance & Media.

But the spirit of rigidity is the problem of many Nigerian universities. And that problem is affecting you too.

And for the record, theatre is just a branch of performing arts.

My views on Christianity are strictly informed by what the Bible says and not what anyone else says or does. Christians who curse you and others don’t know what they are about.
To say the truth about a thing or situation is not to malign same. Examine my posts and critically engage me Sir.
I’m not aware that Christianity forbids other religions from thriving. That will not be the Bible. God wants folks to exercise their free will in choosing what to believe in. In contrast Islam does not allow the luxury to freely choose and practice the religion of your choice.
Neither does Christianity. No religion allows you the luxury to freely choose and practice the religion of your choice.

Supposing your son tells you he wants to become a Muslim, how would you take it?

Christians may not get violent when their children rebel against the faith, but they are just as judgmental as Muslims. As far as the average Christian is concerned, you are going to hell if you leave the faith for another belief system.

In Yorubaland, it is not unusual for you to find families consisting of Christians and Muslims cohabiting peacefully. So, one variable to also consider before your malign a whole religion is the human being (s) themselves, and not the religion.

When Peter used a knife to cut off a soldier's ear, was that a highlight of Christ's teachings? Did Peter embody the Christian belief in dealing with persecution or was he just being Peter (a fisherman probably used to a life of violence)?

If Christians and Muslims can cohabit as a family throughout many Southwestern states, why then do you think Islam frowns at other religions thriving?

If you say your view of Christianity is being informed by what the Bible says, then, what informs your view of Islam? Have you taken the time to study their Quran?

You made me.laugh, sir. Theatre Arts isn't a branch of performing arts. Infact, Theatre Arts is more encompassing. Simply put, Theatre is a synthesis of many Arts (be it performing or not). Theatre Arts 8s not limited to performance. You may study Theatre and have no need to appear before the audience while your arts speaks directly to the audience.

By your ruling, Play writing, media, children theatre, management, stage management and lots more are outside the scope of Theatre Arts.

I understand your point as regards courses borrowed outside the department. My reference is not to that. I was talking of the internal courses taken within the department that have affirms the similarity and closeness of the course with other courses
SMH...

How can you say theatre arts is more encompassing for Christ's sake.

This is common sense.

Theatre is just a performing art.

That is why universities with better understanding of what I am saying have a department of performing arts rather than of theatre art.

And universities who also have better understanding of what I am saying treat it as a branch of performing arts which it really is.

In the University of Lagos, it is a department of two performing arts: Theatre and Music. So, it is the Department of Theatre Art and Music. In University of Ilorin, it is the Department of Performing Arts.

Theatre Arts is a branch of performing Arts?? What is performing Arts What's Theatre Arts? Please, tell me, I need to learn.

And I'm not talking about the courses borrowed outside the department, that's normal and should be expected. I'm talking of courses within the department that have little or no difference from the courses from those related departments.
Performing arts include dance, theatre, music, circus art, comedy, and even magic.

Theatre is just a branch of performing arts. It is not the only performing art that we have.

As for borrowed courses, those courses are related to theatre in one way or the other. You will have to do courses such as histories related to theatre or performing arts generally, as well as English-related courses.

For instance, in Psychology, there are departmental core courses that are Social Works courses as well as Statistics, Biology, and even Law. In short, psychology students do courses in nearly, if not, in all departments. Because psychology is relevant in all spheres of life. So, in psychology, you will do varieties of courses (not borrowed) in the arts, the social sciences and the sciences. Do you know there is even an engineering psychology?

I agree that we need to focus more on STEM courses than we presently are.

But, don't look down on the importance of other courses. Every course has its place in society. Mass media will always be a part of society, and an important agent of socialization.

And broadcasting can provide research grounds for graduates of STEM courses.
