Hey @vcole... Been a while. Hope you and your family are ok.Thankful your kids are ok... One can't be too careful.

vcole:
Hi everyone. It's been a while. Tried to catch up on the thread. 280 pages plus! Congrats to all recent landed immigrants, ppr recipients, ppr hopefuls, etc.

@bbaby84, i had my own scare last week when my almost 4yo decided to take himself and his younger sibling visiting down d hall to a neighbour's house unbeknownst to me. It was a nightmare....one that has led to extra locks installation.

It's similar to learning graphic design and not exactly how to use Corel, Photoshop nor illustrator individually... Same could apply to web development and other fields...

I am confused about the bolded. How can one learn to program without learning a programming language?

Really considering agriculture... I got a farm in Nigeria and I hear farming is huge in Canada. I will research on this asap...

DebateNigeria:
I completely agree with the part of "conducting a research before going into any business", whether in Nigeria or abroad. Business itself is a big risk, and I am sure so many foreigners have established "day care" without ending up in jail.

Those who have interest in setting up a creche should conduct their research and never be perturbed by one unfortunate issue.

Can we have more ideas. Anything on farming (agriculture).

Yes. Renew your passport and travel with both... Some people have done that successfully.

So what do you suggest? To renew passport and travel with both?

Welcome back @oohunt...

Did you wait to get your PR card? If not, how did you sort out travel + plans to arrive later without it?

Thanks

oohunt:
Hey guys,

I am back again reading up but had to skip some pages cause of time.

So, we are back in Naija after the short landing. It was alright. I did not see all of Calgary to make an overall judgement. All I saw was white everywhere. The layering up helped a lot and I was not as cold as I thought I will be. We spent minimal time outdoors though.

We were able to get the basics done: SIN registration, health card registration, opened bank accounts with TD. Hubby tried the knowledge test for driver's license, failed the first time (because of one point-painful) but passed the second time. For me, I was not ready to fail o. I took vcole's advice - doing all knowledge and driving test when we return in the beautiful summer time grin.

Em, I decided to take my kids for a walk one day, being bundled inside the house for days. So, we layered up 4 layers! As we stepped outside, it was windy. It was -12 that day. I decided, let's go right, up the hill with the wind on our backs. We got to the top of the road, kids were sniffing, with emergency catarrh and I said, okay, let's turn back. grin grin grin that was when I understood the wind! grin It was biting!! My 7 year old enjoyed it!! It was exciting to her. But the younger one, hmmm, I had to carry her, put her on my shoulder so the wind won't blow on her face. This walk took a total of 6 minutes. grin I felt better when I got indoors. Will I do it again, sure!
What amazed me the most was days later, when the temperature increase to 6 degrees, we celebrated the warmth. Amazing how the body adjusts!

Hmm, I do not want to cause a big debate but, the cost of living when converted to naira is not a small money. I already knew that from all the knowledge I gathered from this thread, I was just not ready to calculate it. It all boils down to, is it worth it in the end? Yes, yes and yes!

Next step for me now is to find a good elementary school.

Please can you guys advice me on which areas to avoid in Calgary. Someone has mentioned NE. Does this mean the whole NE??

Thank you!

Thanks for the info.

I am aware of the luggage restrictions.

I plan to drive in...

Wura27:

Yes, you can purchase a one way ticket to US but you need to have another ticket for your US trip to Canada. You can either buy from an airline or a travel agent.

I wont advise you enter US at all unless you have something important to do here because US to Canada is considered a local flight and you would have to pay for each baggage. 1st box costs 25, 2nd is 35 and third is around 100 dollars per passenger.

Travel / Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by boldinc(m): 8:35am On Jan 27, 2018
Hey @Wura27... Did you purchase you US one way ticket directly from an airline?

Been considering this for my family and been doubting we would be allowed to purchase a one way ticket.

Wura27:

Loll....sorry no gist yet o.

I left Naija just before Christmas but i'm still on the road. I never land in Canny. Only issue was when I landed Yankee and they took me to one corner and started drilling me. You know Trump has told them to raise alarm when it's a Naija landing especially if you're travelling alone and it was now one way ticket to make matters worse. It was a serious thing o but my COPR and ticket to Canny cleared all doubts.

In the meantime, I've been applying online. I used freetone to get a Canadian number and I've had a few phone interviews.

I'd sure update when I land.

All the best

It should be fine... Maybe your hubby can add an LOE stating he is willing to use the funds for the immigration purpose.

ODBae:
(Hello Boldinic, thanks for this information. I need a little clarification on this. I am the PA, but plan to use a letter from hubby's cooperative as part of our POF. Is this allowed)

Hi DadR... The letter was very plain and simple. It just stated that she was a member of the society and also the exact amount of money she had... That's all.

Only the letter was submitted along side her personal statement of account which did not have much... no statement of deposit to cooperative was submitted.

They were not contacted by IRCC to the best of knowledge...

Hope this helps.

@boldinc, congratulations on your PPR.

Regarding the bolded below, can you please share a format of the simple with me via newzone4luv@atyahoodotcom?

Then was it just the letter you submitted, no statement of deposit from the cooperative? Also, do you have an idea if IRCC confirmed the POF from your wife's cooperative?

Thanks man.

Some of the ones I have had the opportunity to register and participate in are:

FPHRC (FOOD PROCESSING HUMAN RESOURCES COUNCIL) www.fphrc.com - This comes with 12 certificates... gives you an edge if you consider exploring the Food and Beverage Industry. There are 21 course to be completed in 30 days. Once you complete them, your certificates would be mailed to you and an online webinar graduation where potential employers would also attend and you would be introduced to them.

SOPA (Settlement Online Pre Arrival) https://secure.settlementonlineprearrival.ca/login/index.php - This comes with 5 courses, not sure if any certificates are issued yet, but you are assigned a mentor you book an appointment with, to help create and assess a plan personalized for you, also review your CV and cover letter.

Prepcan www.prepcan.ca - You are assigned a mentor to help review your CV and cover letter and also give tips on how to connect with potential employers, where to and how to communicate with them. You start off with 45 minutes call from the mentor to assess where you are and you keep in touch until your arrival, where they link you up with post settlement organizations.

NextStopCanada (YMCA) https://nextstopcanada.force.com - If I remember correctly, they are linked with PrepCan. Got the reminder email for my assessment from PrepCan.

Prepare for Canada www.prepareforcanada.com

CanPrep https://www.jvstoronto.org/pre-arrival/canprep/

All these are details from my personal experiences with them... Apart from the Mentors, training, etc, all these websites are full of webinars that would help a lot.

Wish you all the best!

Please can you recommend some of these programs? I just got my ppr and have sent my passport. I can start preparing now.

You are absolutely right with respect to different style of managing... I have noticed this in the several training and courses I have been attending online.

It is advisable to get involved with all these pre-arrival settlement programs months before your arrival in Canada. They are extremely helpful... It cannot be overemphasized. I feel extra prepared for the Canadian workforce while understanding the culture diversity and also knowledge of how to communicate and interact with colleagues in the work environment. Also learning how to handle problems and situations that require urgent solutions in the Canadian work environment at a supervisory level... This is building my critical thinking skills...

Some of these training come with Canadian recognized certificates which gives you an edge as a new comer... You can add them on your CV... There are ALL FREE... paid for by the Canadian Government.

Congrats again @freeradical

freeradical:
You are completely right and have spoken well. To buttress your point with that of six sigma, management is a whole different ball game here. I'm trying to unlearn everything I know about management from Nigeria and replacing that knowledge with real people mgt.

I'm already job shadowing with some of the other managers and from what I can see I have to really modify my management style. Its worse if the work environment is unionized. There are strict rules to follow for basically everything. And they never ever shout or curse like we usually do in Nigeria to drive home our point.

It's really a bad precedence being set by some Nigerians in the past by failing to manage the change in their workplace and this will definitely affect others coming down the line. My best advice is that we must develop a strong work ethic. Our country is messed up compared to theirs because of the difference in work ethic. If you are putting in an 8hr shift here be prepared to be up and running for the whole 8hrs aside your allotted break time. All those rubbish we get away with back home won't fly here because once you don't put in enough time and focus to your work it shows I'm your result. This guys have amazing systems that tracks everything and there is nowhere to hide.

Getting the job is only the first part of the equation... Keeping it is where the main work lies!

It expires a year after the day you went for your medicals... not when you passed it.

XX01:

I know this is late and you have probably taken a decision on what to do but the info can help others in your shoes.

The validity of the visa is usually the earlier of medicals passed date or the passport expiry date. CIC requires that your passport should be valid for more than 6 months at the point of application i.e. AOR. So, instead of giving you a visa that expires after 1 year of medicals passed, they would have given you a visa expiring as at the date of your passport expiration date.

I hope I wasn't too confusing.

Hey Congo... Entrepreneurship is always a good way to go...

Considering that too and also considering landing in London... Would be nice to keep in touch.

TheCongo2:

This is an idea that I have been nursing for sometimes.
In Computer Science I have a passion for automation.
As a result of this, I had learned how to make automated toys for my kids.
Given that I had to use wood to make those toys, I have developed a passion for Carpentry in the process.
My home garage has been turned into a workshop. I have bought a lot of equipment (Table saw, Milter saw, Gigsaw ... ), .

For the time being, I am sharpening my skills in Carpentry and electronics (automation) by making toys for my kids and do few works around the house. But as time goes by, I will get involved with new projects and ideas

For instance, today I came across this thread on Nairaland (How Does Wheelbarrow Leasing Run)
https://www.nairaland.com/4264143/how-does-wheelbarrow-leasing-run
Among the cons that was presented in this thread was the fact that the person who lease the wheelbarrow can run away with it.
Then I thought to myself that the owner of the wheelbarrow can remotely activate an electronic device that is build into the wheelbarrow to lock the wheel in case the wheelbarrow isn't returned. There is also away to electronically locate the wheelbarrow in case it isn't returned. Maybe I should build such a wheelbarrow and send it to someone in Nigeria grin

In any case, I am no longer interested in working for any company. I just want to have the freedom to be on my own.

Mr A needs to honor the terms of the contract with the lawyer. If you want to relieve the lawyer, do it the proper way and according to the contract.

Then you can create another profile.

DadR:
Hello E-Family,

Could you please give answer to the below question:

Mr. A has an EE profile in the pool which was created by an agent. Due to some reasons, he decides to abandon the agent as well as the existing EE profile. Can Mr. A create another profile on his own using another email address and a different NOC?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @mcstan18... You need to stop encouraging misinterpretation on here. It is wrong to get into the pool with fabricated ECA number. Anyone without an ECA result, whether being process or not, simply makes you ineligible for creating an EE profile.

I advise anyone considering this option refrain from doing such and just wait until your ECA results gets to you. There is really no need to rush in this process... You getting ITA asap doesn't guaranteed your application would be processed quicker... In fact, you at risk of getting a 5 year ban.

You need to be patient and take the right and required steps to achieve your goal of arrival in Canada as a PR. It's a life time plan... Take it as seriously.

Merry Christmas everyone...
