I flew Lufthansa on a return trip to US last september. Did not have any major problems. There was a slight problem with the leg from Frankfurt to Chicago. they changed the departing gate a few times, so we had to move. And then after settling down at the correct gate finally and going through security, there was some mix up and we were asked to go back out of the holding area and go through security again. The FRA-ORD flight was actually a united airline flight, being a Lufthansa partner, but all the mix up and confusion was still at eh Frankfurt airport with Lufthansa folks in charge.

I personally do not think Lufthansa is any different from say KLM or Air France.

As I mentioned, this is optional. You do not have to even get off the ship. Most most people do to take tours, head tot he beach, eat at a local restaurant, buy souvenirs, etc.

The most I have spent in any particular country is about $100 - $120 for my family of 4. And this included a tour of the island, beach visit (food and drink included). And this was in St. Marteen. One of the more expensive islands. If you just want to hop on a cab and head to the beach and may be stop at the local market for souvenirs, it will cost you no where near that. Most of the ports are relatively safe. Tourism is the #1 source of revenue in most of these islands, and the go the extra length to make sure tourists are safe. The tours are usually organized by tour companies and in some cases individuals You can also book the tours/excursions through the cruise, but they are more expensive. You can negotiate with the tour operators when you get to port. We usually just get off the ship, talk to and negotiate with some the so many tour companies/cabs that are waiting until we get one that is willing to to what we want at a reasonable price. You can negotiate just like you negotiate when you go to the market in Naija. Typically, we take a mini tour of the city and ask them to take us to a beach. Just about all the beaches have a restaurant/bar right on the beach.

Disable caching if it's a web application. Don't know about asp, but with a jsp/html we do something like this. You should be able to do its equivalent on your end.

Yes. I a have been on several cruises. Coincidentally, I am heading out for another one on the 21st. It's spring-break for the kids, and they have come to expect either a cruise or a Caribbean vacation every year. This one is Western Carribean leaving out of Miami. from the 22 - 29. The islands to be visited visited are Roatan, Honduras, Cozumel, Mexico, Belize, and the Bahamas. We've been to Cozumel and Bahamas several times.

It's extreme fun being on a cruise. Cruising is quite common on this end, may be because of the USA's proximity to the Caribbean. There are lots of things to do during those 7 days. The cruise ships themselves are just like a city. Several restaurants, Night clubs, day care for the kids, gym, spa, arcade. several pools, etc. I am sure you guys are aware of all the amenities. The key thing is that you get a chance to visit several countries/islands at once. You get to each port in the morning, and you leave about 8 - 9 hours later. We normally take an excursion/tour of the island, then end up at the beach.

As for costs, it depends on the cabin type you have. A balcony cabin (we always get a balcony) will cost about $150 more per person than an inside cabin, It normally averages out to about $1000/person + tax. And everything is included. You do not need to spend a dime extra on the cruise ship. Anything you do at the ports, excursions, etc. are all on you. Also, consider you may need to fly/drive to the port city you are leaving from. For example, this cruise leaves out of Miami, so we are flying into Miami a day before.

Just a small addition regarding an IDE. I normally would not recommend a beginner use and IDE ( I always suggest textpad). But, if you cannot get a hold of the already suggested one, eclipse is another free IDE that is quite good.

Nope! I have got another Naija passport almost immediately which has since expired about 3 years ago. And I did a reissue via the Atlanta Consulate. So, do have a current Naija pali.

Thay actually held on to the passport. They indicated in a note with my British Passport that they will return it to the Nigereian Embassy or govt. Not sure, I just know they did not return it to me.

Geez! Things have really changed. Over $1000 for a British passport or is that to apply for citizenship.  And you ought to be living in the UK.  In 1990 I think, I applied for my British passport via the consulate in Houston, TX. from the US. Living in Louisiana then.   No need for an interview. I just sent them the completed application, my original Birth cert, and $40.  No dual citizenship allowed then, so I think they also invalidated my Naija passport.

I do not think your aunt understands exactly when you said you are going into programming/development. May be you should tell her that you will be studying software engineering.

Since you are into development, what about writing an application that will fit into the needs of Nigeria nd try to market it there, and that can also pave the way for setting up your own shop. I know things are not perfect in Nigeria or anywhere for that matter. That may mean you have to bee on ground to be able to do some analysis on the situation there and how things operate and may be come up with a simple application that you can write and sell to some companies to help automate what they do. I agree, that I do not think you want to go out there and start working for someone. Unless you get a guaranteed contract from a reputable company.

Don't know what constitutes a "Real Programmer". What I now is, it's not about the programming language you learn. As suggested, see what's in demand in your area and take it from there. Whatever language you choose, it's very important to make sure you have a good grasp of Software development principles in general. That will take you a long way, and make for an easy transition, if there is a need to learn other programming languages. The bottom line is, try to be your best in whatever programming language you learn, and that will separate you from the pack.

If the cancellation or delay is due to natural causes, sush as weather, the airlines are not reqired to compensate you. Because it's out of their control. The other folks probably knew that and that's why they did not complain.

I am not sure if anyone can eally teach you programming but yourself. Get some ebooks and read and practice. Starty by solving simple problems. That will help you determine if you really want to do programming. I've seen people go into programming without fully understanding what it's all about, and end up not liking it.

Very true. 40 pounds is a lot for a 3 gig limit. I expect these prices to come down as time goes on and there is more competition. Heck! I pay $19.99 for unlimited data and 200 sms on contract with AT&T. I used MTN's 500 naira/50 MB for 24 hr. plan when I visited in October. I had to tether my laptop. It's not bad for temporary use.

I concur. What's the purpose of a live feed if the information cannot be acted upon instantly. Besides, as you folks have already mentioned, without the NSE actually providing the means to integrate with their system to access it, how does OP plan on getting this information.

KarmaMod, it normally does not snow much there. So, they will likely not have anywhere near the number of snow plowers/salt trucks that say a Chicago or New york will have. That amount of snow that they have experienced will not lead to any kind of closure on this end. Again, Chicago, NY, are snow cities and they have a lot of facilities to deal with it. Heck! Even considering that it's a whole lot colder here. I saw someone post that their temp is -3 C. That's 27 F. We will take that any day anytime in Chicago. The temperature was 9 F when I headed out this morning. On a several days last month our high was  below 0 F, and we still had to go to work/school.

Considering the size of the country and its location, the chances of finding a Naija are quite slim. So, you will likely have to use the internet for whatever information you may need.

As already mentioned, if you want direct but a little uncomfortable flight due to the size of the aircraft and the travel time, go with Delta. I have not used them yet, but I have travelled with most other European airlines that go from here to Lagos, with stopover in Europe of course. In my experience, the layovers with most of them are not too bad. In October with KLM I think my layover was 2 hrs. My Air France flight for June also has about a 2 hr. layover.

I'd suggest you try orbitz, farechase, cheaptickets, etc. I mostly use orbitz.


Edit: Make sure you note your layover. I think if you fly Virgin Atlantic from here, you wil have to spend the night in UK because of the time they get to London and the time the connecting flight leaves for Lagos.

Belize is a small country in Central America. It's economy is heavily dependent on tourism. Coincidentally, myself and the family will be in Belize for one day during the last week of March. As part of a cruise stop. Nigerians are everywhere. So, there is a chance there are a few there. I met Nigerians in Barbados and Jamaica when I visited those islands.

As already mentioned, the "real" problem is bigger that the fact that they are worried about fraud. Paypal needs to be able to integrate their system with your bank account seamlessly. The need to be able to uniquely identify and verify/authenticate the information you provide. The way our financial institutions operate does not make that possible. I do not even think most Nigerian banks are integrate locally yet. That is, can I open an account at a bank in Lagos, and walk into another branch in Kaduna or so, and be able to withdraw money and perform other transactions. Until all the financial institutions or at least the major ones get to such a level, things will remain the way they are. Some so-called big banks can not even handle international wire transfer. We have a long way to go!

From the look of things it sure seems like some clients want lots of stuff but do not want to pay for it. I can't believe some of the prices that these clients are offering. An an enterprise level application with a web front-end that talks to a relational database will cost a whole lot more. I wonder how much some of these companies will pay for such applications. As mentioned already, it will likely boil down to how you market yourself.

In my opinion it's total exploitation. Considering how much these folks charge for tickets to travel to/from Nigeria. Things are tight and they have seen that they can make money by plying this route, since we do not have our own flagship airline flying most international routes. Hopefully, a lot of them will sign on to fly this route and that will drive the price of tickets down. .

COBOL may be an old language, however it's still used heavily by a lot of banks and insurance companies on this end. Most of their legacy applications are written in COBOL, so they are still maintaining them, and integrating them with a web interface. At my current client, about 50% of the consultants there are mainframe developers.

I'd like to know the answer to that question too. I wonder how much enterprise level J2EE applications are being developed in Nigeria. From the other theads I have read. it does not seem like a whole lot. How can one get a job in these technologies in Nigeria?

How relevant is J2EE in the Nigerial market. was into EJB (3.0) and JWS not quite long ago, but was discouraged from furthering as i heard most businesses have now moved on to light-weight frameworks and don't depend on J2EE particulary EJB. is it worth doiing the SCBCD 5.0 and SCDJWS?.

J2EE can be as simple and as complex as you want to make it. Like others said, just hit google and explore. In a nut shell, developing J2EE applications means you break the application down into components according to the functions each perform. It can be a very simple MVC application or it can involve a number of frameworks. Again, there is lots of info out there.
