Excellent tutorial! Keep up the good work sbucareer.

I just want to mention that, if you are referencing any javabean objects from your JSP, tomcat 5.0 and above requires that thay be in a package. If not the JSP compiler will not be able to find them.

Programming › Re: What Programming Languages Have You Used? by Bossman(m): 11:15pm On Mar 21, 2007
In school learnt ADA (similar to pascal) and C. First job out of college did COBOL for 5 years at a major insurance company. A little bit of VB and C at a couple of consulting gigs. I have been doing Java for the last 8 years. Java is definitely my favorite of all the languages I have used.

Coloba, wish you the best and our prayers are with you. Very importantly though, this is a very serious disease that progresses quickly if not taken care. There is no cure, but there is a way to slow it down, and that's by taking whatever medicine you were given/prescribed religiously. More than anything else, that's very important. I also want to commend you for having the courage to mention it here. Please Do NOT post your number. Anyone that wants to contact you or wants your number can do that via PM.

Someone asked that you read how Michael Jordan is managing himself. Not sure how that is relevant to your situation though. May be they meant Magic Johnson, who also tested positive (to the virus that causes AIDS) about 15 years ago and is doing well.

Also, if possible, it's very important that you try to contact the people you've been intimate with and have them go for a check.

Only on nairaland would you see people post their phone number and IMEI in a public forum. I suggest you edit your post and remove your IMEI.
Programming › Re: Java Programming For Dummies by Bossman(m): 11:33pm On Mar 12, 2007
Could not have been said better.

You really have to love it and be ready to invest the time, in order to be succesful at it. And, with that success comes oppurtuities to make good money doing it.

Fdeveloper:
I would just like to emphasise the point that sbucareer has made by saying that in my experience the bulk of knowledge that really good programmers have is generally self taught following extensive research and practise. I believe that to be really good at it, you have to have a passion for programming and be proactive when it comes to learning and of course be willing to spend many sleepless nights learning your trade. There is no topic that isn't comprehensively covered by various sites on the internet and in fact learning how to harvest that data is one of the first vital skills that I think a good programmer needs. The other point is that the learning never stops as software development techniques and methodologies are constantly evolving.

Yes, good programmers can earn a very good money but as the famous saying goes, to whom much is given, much is expected and as sbucareer rightly says, you can't become a programmer just because you want to earn good money. I have never met sbucareer but I have read enough of his posts to know that after he has given a comprehensive introduction to a topic, he would most likely respond better to questions such as "I have tried x and y but I still have problem z, do you have any suggestions?" rather than "How do I do x and y?".

The bottom line is that you have to be single minded, self motivated and prepared to put in a lot of effort to succeed.
Car Talk › Re: Best Way To Ship A Car To Lagos? by Bossman(m): 11:28pm On Mar 07, 2007
Depending on where it's being shipped from in the US, how (container or not, and the size of the car(car, truck, van) the cost will vary. Early last year, I shipped a 2004 Toyota Sequoia in a container from the Houston port for $2000. Not sure how much my dad cleared it. But I think they the clearing cost is also based on the year, value, size, etc. The car itself was $22,000. For a $6000 car, I would not even bother with a container.

hey there, I was looking through this thread and I'm really finding it interestin but the challenge is, I click on your link (sbucareer) to download the platform. it was sucessful but when it got to modifying the classpath, I did it & went to command prompt, javac.
It came out wit an error message, in short, I want to start compiling bt its not going
Programming › Re: Learning Java Without Tears by Bossman(m): 12:25pm On Mar 05, 2007
From your post, I am thinking it can't find javac. Make sure you path is pointed to where javac is located. You can either set your path to it or try to compile from that location. It should be in the bin folder of your JDK installation.

Unless you are actually getting compile erroers. In which case you have to figure that out.
Travel › Re: Chances Of Getting U.s Visa? by Bossman(m): 11:23pm On Mar 02, 2007
I agree. Paying fully for a course that you may not be able attend is not too wise. There is no guarantee that you will get a visa even by paying the entire fee for the course.  See what their refund policy is and if you can get your money back. Not sure what can be taught to you any way to cost that much money. Most people that attend those kinds of courses here have it paid for by their company.

Programming › Re: Daylight Savings Time And Robust Code by Bossman(m): 10:53pm On Mar 01, 2007
I can tell you it's definitely not a programmers fault. It has to be handled at the environment level. Definitely can't expect the developer to code for that. We do not code for it on this end. I believe during installation windows does ask if you want it to automatically adjust for DST.

I have asked the same question a number of times. It's definitely not a good idea to post your number in a public forum. This is something you do not see in other forums. But seems to be very common here at Nairaland. It must be a Naija thing!

Programming › Re: Mysql Help Needed by Bossman(m): 11:27pm On Feb 21, 2007
As already mentioned, you are just storing the file path, and not the pdf itself. I am thinking you wanted to store the pdf and that's why the column is defined to hold a BLOB. Verify your requirements and define the columns appropriately or change your insert statement. No need to define a column as BLOB if it's only going to store a string as you are doing.

You can also use the describe statement to verify your table's structure. As in DESCRIBE yourTableName

Since it's likely going down the drain for you, you might as well take both of them with you, so print the email(s) out and take it to the lady's husband. Heck! She does not give a crap about how you feel, so you should not waste time. Print several copies (just in case one gets lost).
Phones › Re: I Need Help With Opera Mini On My Phone! by Bossman(m): 11:22pm On Feb 09, 2007
Opera mini works on top of your current data connection. So, you need to make sure you have the correct settings by testing it outside of opera. Verify that you can make a GPRS connection using the default WAP browser on the phone. Once that is verified then try with opera.

Do your own homework, when you get stuck post where you are having problems here, and the knowledgeable folks here will come to your aid. There is no free lunch anywhere, and programming is not for the faint minded. Assuming someone gives you the answer to this problem and you get by, when you get to the "real world", you will be tested, and they will find out quickly if you are competent or not.
Programming › Re: 12 Year-old Nigerian Bags Sun's Java Certificate by Bossman(m): 11:12pm On Feb 09, 2007
Certification may be nothing, but achiieving it at 12 years old is definitely something. I read on javaranch that another 12 year old or so from India achieved the same thing. Lets not undermine what the guy has achieved at his age. He si definitely at a different level, compared to most other 12 year olds. After all, a lot of professional developers study for this exam and still do not pass the thing.
Romance › Re: Why are so many African marriages breaking up abroad?. by Bossman(m): 11:23pm On Feb 07, 2007
I agree. Very high divorce rate among Africans abroad. I believe it's around 50% or so. Which is about the same rate as marriages in the US in general.

In most of these cases Finance and infidelity are usually involved. I guess we just have to remember where we are from, where we have been, and stick to our moral values.
Travel › Re: Travel To Nigeria by Bossman(m): 11:08pm On Feb 07, 2007
Where are you trying to book a flight from. As long as you have something that will allow you valid entry into Nigeria (passport or Visa), and you have your money, you should be able to book on-line. I have booked on BA's website, Orbitz, Iberia, Airline Consolidators, Gorilla Travel, without any problems. BA now requires that you go to an agent/airport to show your ID/credit card you will be using before you can finalize purchase.

Computers › Re: Reliable Alternative To Linksys Router? by Bossman(m): 7:04pm On Feb 05, 2007
Linksys is a reputed product. If it's not working for you, try dlink or netgear. I have been running an entry-level netgear in my home for over 5 years without any problems at all. An inconsistent power supply will definitely affect any router, or any electrical appliance for that matter.

You may want to check edmunds.com. The link above will also give some info. As already suggested, Toyota is not bad at all. I was in a similar situation around this time last year. I went with a Toyota Sequoia. My parents can't be happier! It's been completely trouble free. Of course, the fact that it's was only a 2 year old truck helps too. I was in Lagos a few months ago. The prices those guys charge down are unbelievable! So, as you are already aware, you are definitely better off getting it here in the US.
Phones › Re: Strange Phone Call: Private Number by Bossman(m): 9:59pm On Feb 02, 2007
Do not blindly ignore all private/unknown calls. Most of the time, when someone is calling you internationally, and they are using a calling card, it shows up as either unknown or private. Some phones show private while some show unknown. But, if you do not expect anyone to call you from abroad with a calling card, you can just ignore the calls. Also, when someone returns a call via the voice mail menu, it's going to show up as private or unknown. i.e. The VM gives them an option to return a call in response to a message that was left.

Romance › Re: Should I Marry This 40 Year Old Bachelor? by Bossman(m): 11:03pm On Jan 31, 2007
You mentioned quite a number of negatives. Not that 40 is too old.  The age difference between you guys is OK. But, he is definitely a late bloomer, if he has not settled down into his home, marriage, kids, or any of that. I understand why you are worried. You definitely want to bring kids into an established and stable environment. You said he loves, cares for and respects you, so may be you should talk to him a little more and try to get an idea of what his plans are. The dressing part and all that, you can coach him on. The key thing is what does the future hold for you guys as a couple and as a family.
Culture › Re: Your Views On Polygamy? by Bossman(m): 11:19pm On Jan 30, 2007
I agree, Not sure why anyone will want 2 wives in this day and age.  unfortunately,  Nigeria is a polygamous society and it's still practiced.  This is also one of the reasons for a high rate of infidelity among out men in general.  Most of the times the wives do not get along anyway.

Funny enough, I was recently in Nigeria in Oct. last year. One of my dad's drivers (an older gentleman) lives in one of the rooms in the boys quarters with his wife. A few days before I left I started to see a young lady back there, I just assumed that was his daughter or something. Until he introduced here to me as his wife. I was a little shocked! Because he was just lamenting to me how things are a little tight for him financially.  Why bring a second wife into this hardship oga driver?  But that's naija for ya! I can't even imagine coming home to 2 wives.
Tech Jobs › Re: Java/j2ee For Hire by Bossman(m): 3:13pm On Jan 24, 2007
I just would like to mention that PHP is more of a scripting language. While Java is a full-fledged OOP language. And that is a huge difference!  They are designed for diffeent purposes. So, each will have advantages over the other in one area or another. But, for enterprise-level web applications, here in the States (and probably most other places), it's like Java/J2EE is the de facto standard.

I believe though, that eventually major corporations in Nigeria will start to use Java/J2EE when they start to develop "real" applications.
Family › Re: Having A Joint Account With Your Spouse? by Bossman(m): 10:35pm On Jan 23, 2007
That's the way it should be. For me, All the bills(Mortgage, daycare, kids education funds, living expenses, etc.) come out of the joint account. Each of us also have our individual accounts that we use for personal stuff. 50% of our take take home goes to the joint account and the other half to our personal accounts. I bring home more than twice the wife, but, this has worked very well for us. Most of my friends also follow the same procedure. It's definitely a good idea to separate funds for personal stuff from funds from funds for the bills.
