Amnesty International on Sunday asked federal authorities to immediately open all detention centres run by the police special anti-robbery squad for inspection by rights institutions.

The global rights body’s comments came hours after Inspector-General Muhammed Adamu announced immediate proscription of the brutal police squad long accused of corruption and grievous rights violations.

“Today’s announcement by the IGP disbanding the infamous SARS falls short of demands for accountability and justice for abuses committed by the unit and the police in general,” Osai Ojigho, Amnesty Nigeria’s lead, said in a statement to Peoples Gazette Sunday afternoon. “Disbanding SARS must be supported by addressing the underlying issues that allowed impunity to thrive.”

Amnesty said steps should be taken to impose long-time change based on three key steps.

1. Immediate and unhindered access to SARS and other police detention centers by oversight bodies such as Police Service Commission, National Human Rights Commission, as well as lawyers and human rights defenders.

2. Immediate investigation and prosecution of all police officers who have been accused of grave human rights violations such as extra judicial executions, torture, and other ill-treatment.

3. A clear and concise timeline for the implementation of the reforms to end police atrocities is key to safeguarding trust between Nigerians and the authorities.

A spokesman for the police did not immediately return a request seeking comments about whether or not the SARS cells would be opened for external inspection.

The cells are believed to be holding children and innocent citizens.

Rights groups have also accused the outlawed squad of carrying out most of the extra-judicial killings linked to them in detention centres across the country.

That is where the reforms comes in, we should task the Government to give us a good policing system and not to end SARS. Our protest should be say no to CYBERCRIME, SARS should be reformed and as citizens we should put more energy to stop CYBERCRIMES at the grassroot level. This job is for all of us.
We should think of ways to better our systems and not to scrape institutions, we should strive to live right for the innocent souls we have lost via SARS, we should consciously demand accountability from our low tier government, we should protest for Job creation, we should protest for industrialization, we should protest for individual institutions to deliver results, we should discourage our youths from CYBERCRIME, neighbor to neighbor agitation. Protests are usually specific to a cause or a reaction against an event. We can have series of protests to cover all areas but This particular one is about the high handedness and impunity of the police in general. Endsars is just the slogan, the demand is for a reform to stop brutality, profiling, outright murder , kidnapping and extortion by ironically, the police.

Cybercrime is everyone problem right now, if reforming SARS is the way out then let it be; if is only SARS that disturb these boys at grassroot level then we need to educate SARS on better ways to achieve results via reform.

if you look critically at the demand of the more enlightened protesters, they are against police extortion and brutality in general. SARS personnel are the most prominent in such act, but the protest is aimed at the police in general.

Modes of operation of security agents in every country are different and based on profiling even in America. Even Black cops are more likely to be more careful while arresting a black thug.

The Nigerian police force uses the method that best suits Nigeria. If a foreigner from Western Europe arrives Nigeria , the individual would be surprise that Ak-47 rifles are used even in the absence of combat because police in their countries make use of pistols. Governors in such countries most times move with less than 5 security details.

Are the Nigerian police force wrong to use Ak-47s in broad daylight? Absolutely no. The Nigerian system demands that Law enforcement officials are always ready for combat at least with semi automatic rifles because an average Nigerian armed criminal moves with a superior weapon and there would not be enough time for reinforcement due to the state of bad roads , air response and other factors.

The forerunners of this controversy have sinister motives.

If the police force is reformed those celebrities who protested yesterday who are okay with the many policemen at their gates beating fans to pulp when they trespass would not have any police men attached to them because it is not so in the countries they visit. The death of the officer in this protest unfortunately makes a strong case for SARS. People should be pushing for police reform instead because SARS are not the only corrupt branch of police. Policing in Nigeria needs a complete overhaul, but that doesn't mean police shouldn't exist. If you've noticed, a lot of internet fraudsters and criminally minded people are latching on to the whole EndSARS thing because they think it'll mean they get to do their crimes in peace.

Last week you people reported that SARS shot a man and stole his car. After investigation it was clear the man jumped out of the car to evade arrest and was nowhere dead.
Where are the SARS officials? Who saw them ?

SARS is political. It is the Fulani and Hausa police system of killing southern youths extrajudicially. Mention 1 young person SARS ever harassed or killed that is a northerner? Buhari, the IG and the Senate President endorsed that SARS should continue killing Southern Youths since those that are killed are not Hausas or Fulainis, they are “lazy youths” from the south. Even Osinbanjo failed in controlling these licensed murderers. Until Buhari leaves that places, more southern youths will be killed for no reason. The only solution is a regional protest and I pray it leads to a bloody revolution that throws this blood thirsty killers plus evil government that endorses the daily killing of southern youths. Because in the next 1 month they will be back.
