An African friend always argue that kids are better of raised in Africa. He said he'd send his two boys to Nigeria so they'd know what life is all about. I asked him "what life is all about", he said hardship, blackouts, etc. He said kids raised in the Americas aren't respectful and organized cause they didn't suffer. And that brings me to the topic of this thread. Is the Nigerian style of raising kids really the ideal model? I just want to share my opinion on the things my friend mentioned as reasons to send his boys to Africa: respectful and organized and the need to "suffer small" (his words).

Respectful: In the Nigerian society, elders don't usually explain to kids why they shouldn't do some things; they just authoritatively ask them not to do it and the kids better not ask why. Kids grow up respecting thier elders out of fear (and not admiration or love). The implication of this is that they do a lot things without their patents' knowledge, and they get used to this "hidden lifestyle" that makes it almost impossible for parents to truly know thier children. This in turn denies the parents the opportunity to identify and correct some unwanted behaviours as the kids always tell them just what they want to hear. And then it's only a matter of time before some of these kids outgrow the fear and reveal their true personalities (good luck with your mystery parcel at this point). Whereas in the Americas, kids are engaged and not commanded. You can easily tell the direction your child is headed.

Organized: He said kids raised in Africa are more organized and not crazy like their American counterparts who do all sorts of things like tattoos, plastic surgery, etc. Yes, Americans have a lot of deviants, but that's why new ideas/findings pop up everyday. I believe Africans force thier youngsters to fit into a predefined pattern of life and thereby reducing the chances of creativity. In Africa, you are supposed to go to school, get a job, get married and make children (and there are ages for all these). Then your children will do the same and the cycle continues. This "organised" pattern is the African dream; it is more important than any other dream or even the world itself, and any deviation is frowned upon. Africans think it's a crazy for a man to dedicate his life to studying mosquitoes even if that's his dream (yet Africans are the most affected by these killer insects), Africans think it's crazy for a woman to say she ain't getting married but would rather use her money to adopt and raise orphaned kids. A friend I was teaching software development had to quit cause "he didn't have time anymore". According to him, he had gotten to the age of marriage. And you wonder why nothing spectacular comes out of this continent? Alternative lifestyles might be scary but that's the wheel of progress.

"Suffer small": This one makes me laugh and I usually use it to tease my friend. Kids don't need to suffer small. Kids need the skills that would make them survive in their environment. If carrying water, fighting for a bus, using candles and going to the farm equip the child for the African life, great (just don't overdo it). But that's not necessarily a model. It's something they do out of necessity. A kid who is born in North America does not need to go to Africa to "suffer small". I don't even own a bucket as an adult and I'll probably never buy one. A kid born here needs DIY skills amongst others.

I don't have a problem with some people wanting their kids to go to Africa to learn thier culture but I don't subscribe to the idea that kids raised in Africa are better off. What do you think?

There's no plan to lockdown the country so don't be worried. It's not media that attributes the disease to be COVID-19. Don't be deceived. We have not lost people this much in recent times. Why are they hell bent on locking down Lagos when Lagos State government has withdrawn from treating coronavirus patients? Covid-19 patients bear the financial burden of their treatments.

They should allow people live their normal lives, please. The last lockdown has created massive awareness. Anyone who flouts Covid-19 protocols and contracts the deadly virus should be ready to incur the cost of treating themselves.

Lastly, government has a part of the blame because we haven't seen taskforce implement Covid-19 guidelines in public places. Failure in leadership is affecting every facet of our lives.

You're on point. No need for lockdown but enforcement of existing laws on COVID-19. They can place restrictions on large gatherings.

Very unfortunate our healthcare workers have become vulnerable. We lost a consultant clinician/ Lecturer yesterday. It's very painful that the masses that are being catered for have refused to be responsible.

They know that if they add Lagos we will be having more than 2000 cases.

Activities should be limited to the barest necessities. Offices should run shifts same as markets. Students should stay at home. If they lose one session, e no go kill them. Afterall the average Nigerian graduate stays at home for upwards of 3 years before he gets a job so what is the rush for.

Since the vaccine would be readily available within the next 6 to 12 months, things can be slowed down in anticipation for such a time when most people especially the most vulnerable would have gotten the vaccine.

Very correct. Even if school s are opening in other states Lagos should wait till the end of the month before resuming. In the interim, there should be a ban on social gatherings for at least 2 weeks. Offices should run shift. Businesses should remain open but with strict compliance to Covid-19 protocols. Curfew should be from 10 pm to 4am. We should do everything possible to stop the numbers from increasing. We are fast losing the elderly amongst us.

That's the secret why fatalities appear to be pervasive amongst the rich. The poor has more exposure to sunlight at temperatures difficult for the virus to survive while also getting natural Vitamin D that builds their immunity. Also, the poor have been exposed to a lot of aggressive mosquitoes for a long time . For them to survive those mosquitoes, their immune system has developed a defence which is impregnable to COVID-19. The rich are the ones that travel abroad and easily contract the virus. They also relate more with themselves.
However, there are outliers.
The elderly population whether poor or rich are more likely to die from the disease if infected. Cause of death amongst the poor is hardly confirmed as presentation is always late. Secondly, many poor people who have underlying diseases do not know their true health condition which portends a grave danger in times like this.
Protect yourself as you may think you have a strong immunity that you don't have. You are as weak as your weakest point.

Others include Sunny Irabor, Bisi Olatilo, Mani Onumonu, Zakari Mohammed, Veronica Osawe, Evelyn Russell. I missed those great men and women on Radio. While some of them are gone, a few are still alive.

My fiance wanted to come to the house to see my mum but I told him I won't be around because I'm about heading out to somewhere, so he asked me if my mum would be around, then I said yes and he said he would still go to see her and it doesn't matter if I'm not around.

When I later got home that night, my mum complained that he came empty handed. He didn't bring anything for her and she was the one who offered him her drink.

Although initially, I didn't see anything wrong with that but when my mum expressed her displeasure, I later called him to ask why he came to the house empty handed then I let him know I wasn't happy with him, that it would have been better if he didn't come. He tried arguing with me but I hung up.

Since then, we haven't spoken to each other nor visited each other. Was I wrong?

They simply are not doing enough testing. Secondly, more people come into Lagos from other developed countries via the International airport where the disease is pervasive. Thirdly, Lagos has the highest population density in the country. Lagos has the smallest land mass but the highest population so everywhere is congested. Fourthly, they are battling insecurity in the north such that the lives lost there daily are much compared to Covid-19 cases and they easily accept such deaths as an act of God.

You're very correct. I don't know why it's difficult to believe. Channels TV showed Covid-19 patients at the isolation centres at the weekend, Arise TV showed Covid-19 patients this morning. Arise TV went ahead to interview the stable patients. What other evidence do people need to believe that COVID-19 is real in Nigeria. No wonder in the story of Lazarus in the bible, Abraham didn't grant the rich man's request of sending dead prophets to preach to his brothers.
