This airport will really bring in huge development into Anambra thanks for Obiano, he's not leaving a stone behind.

Was thinking it would be more compartmentalised than this....as we saw in the 3D rendering.

Since the ceiling is dark, i hope they get the lighting right, as it does look a bit dark inside the terminal.

They could have obscured the iron structure a bit more...kinda like they did with the pillars in the hall below.

Have the lifts and escalators been installed? Couldn’t see any.

I think they will obscure all the iron pillars. Except for the roof.

Yes, I agree that the color of the iron in the roof could have been white to enhance natural illumination But, we'll wait and see if they have the time to paint the roof white before opening. Thankfully, they used white for the walls which go a long way with illumination and creating the right ambiance.

This is truly fantastic. If they can build a business model of making very fine ready-made packaged African-designed tops and trousers/ skirts. I am sure they will break the monopoly of China in designing and sewing ready-made African-designed clothes sold in every store all over the world.

Like Awka, Onitsha on the other hand is equally expanding into new areas towards Nkwelle where new neighbourhoods like the luxury place estate, etc, are springing up.

Without diminishing the importance of Onitsha, Anambra needs to concentrate on building one truly modern futuristic city. I am glad that Obiano wants to imbibe the Dubai model to develop Awka capital city into a truly modern metropolis. I guess having lived in Houston, Obiano understands the need not to grow more slums in the name of development in Anambra state. Now, we need more quality rather than quantity. The way he doesn't want all sorts of shanties on the new airport access way. Just to say the road is a "built-up" area. We need world-class structures there and not any shanty mixture of cement and zinc.

The point here isn't that I'm unaware that Jalingo conurbation has expanded to meet Jimeta and now they are one city. The point is to conserve the scarce land resources to build a well-planned truly modern capital city in Anambra state. That meets the standard of any modern city in the world. If Okpoko expands to occupy the entire landmass of Anambra, it is not development in my definition. It is slumming of the entire Anambra. Which is the point i am making here. It is all about carefully placing modern layouts such as the Awka Millenium city, Anambra airport city, etc in very strategic locations within the capital territory to help develop a truly modern capital city that will be a reference city in Africa and the world.

The new Awka city has taken off with the premium Awka Millennium City, also the new Three Arms Zone are also ongoing in the new city. Even the new international conference centre is part of the greater new city. That's the way to go..

Well, we are saying the same thing. The way to go is to develop brand new areas like the Awka Millenium city and similar two or more modern satellite cities within the fringes of the Awka capital territory. Not hyper-focusing on what to demolish in the present old Awka town.

Building a new modern capital city is like building a modern university campus. You may live in the temporary site of the university while developing a modern permanent site. You don't waste money that should be used in building a modern permanent site in demolishing and building new structures in the temporary site.

Awka night life.
We can achieve more. One of the best thing Gov. Obiano and (ACTDA) will do for his successor after Nov. 6 election is to Mark and demolish illegal structures to make way for dual carriage road in Awka.
This will help to give our state capital more befitting look.

The focus and fixation on the old Awka around Eke Awka should end for good.

They should focus on turning the NEW Awka CAPITAL TERRITORY (Landmass from Ngozika estate to all the areas behind the secretariate and UNIZIK permanent site) into a truly modern city. The fixation of going into people's ancestral villages around Eke Awka and surrounding villages to knock down buildings built in the 1950s when Awka was just a village does not make any sense at all.

If Michael Okpara had not built the new Enugu in New Haven, Independence Layout considered to be "bush" at the time he planned them, but instead focussed on knocking down ancestral village homes in Asata, Ogui, and Abakpa Nike, then Enugu would still be looking like a glorified village around Asata and Abakpa Nike.

The next Anambra governor must think of developing a new Awka Capital Territory within the 10 square miles designated as the capital territory and stop this fixation on knocking down old buildings in the old Awka villages as the only spot known as Awka capital territory. Eventually, the old Awka we see today will just be a neighborhood like Abakpa Nike or Ogui in the new Awka Capital Territory. Exactly in the same manner that the Abuja capital territory left those traditional Bwari,Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Nyanya villages to go develop a new modern capital city in the bushes called Garki, Maitama, and Wuse. These bushes are today known as the modern Abuja city while the hitherto main towns in the area are now mere districts of the modern Abuja capital city.

The light-up Anambra campaign is just a special project that has touched me. Even the road in front of my house in my hometown now has functional street lights that come on every night at 7:00 pm!

When I grew up and until very recently, there was not a single streetlight pole with a functional bulb in the entire Anambra state. In fact, only 4 roads in the entire state had street light poles, although the lights did not work. These roads were; (1.) Zik Avenue Awka, (2.) Park road GRA Onitsha (In front of ShopRite), (3.) Awka road Onitsha and (4.) Enugu-Onitsha expressway from Inosi Onira roundabout to Premier Breweries.

I am glad that today, almost every major road in Anambra has functional street lights! This is a quantum leap from where Anambra used to be a few years ago!

I'm not a fan of the present administration. But lets give honour to whom honour is due. The plan for the second Niger bridge was first proposed during the OBJ regime. Late President Yaradua moduled the project before his sudden demise and GEJ whom took after him, had 5 years to act upon it. He took to turn the project into campaign bait for SE votes. The project is presently on- going, thanks to the present administration.

For the specification of the model, the bridge is 1.6Km long with a 10.3km highway which runs from Owerri with an interchange at Oba, Anambra state and terminates at Asaba in Delta State.

Most of you assume every Igbo is a fan of Jonathan. Well, I'm not. I hate weaklings clinging to power. Likewise, I have nothing against Buhari. I commend Buhari for working on the bridge but the hard fact is that the bridge is funded by Jersey bank directly out of the Abacha loot. If not it would have since been like the Enugu-Onitsha expressway project he is building. Again I respect Buhari's decision only to look out for his own Fulani people. Which is okay since that is Nigeria for you.

All I'm saying is that there is totally no plan anywhere to extend the 2nd Niger bridge road to Enugu-Onitsha expressway. So why are you deliberately embarking on disinformation? If i didn't respect your moniker I would have just ignored it as one of those Fulani propagandists in nairaland who would blatantly post Kano or PH airport terminal building and claim it's the Enugu airport terminal completed and furnished by Buhari!

That is why I said that I was still trying to get to the bottom of your game plan by deliberately spreading false information. No credible source has ever cited that the road would reach Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

We all know GEJ's plan for the 2nd Niger bridge with a spur to enugu-onitsha expressway was jettisoned by Buhari's regime review of the project which opted for a simple bypass that connects Owerri road to Asaba-Benin expressway. Why that guy is turning and twisting to pretend they are implementing the old plan is what I'm still trying to decipher.

Looks like the Gatehouse or Tollgate being built is similar in design and style to the one at Enugu.
In fact, only recently did our international airports have decent entrance gates rather than police/army checkpoints put together with sandbags and old tires. I love how they are putting up only standard facilities in this airport. Rather than makeshift shanties.

Hopefully they will use the same type of tiles that was used in the exterior of the trauma center for the exterior of the gatehouse.

For me, It is not a question of who I prefer, it is a question of who did more in the interest of my Anambra state! I will always thank Peter Obi for giving us a technocrat like Obiano. Peter Obi even said it then, that Obiano will do wonders for Anambra if he agrees to serve as governor.

No governor at the twilight of his tenure will continue to work as hard as Obiano to transform his state. Unless he truly loved his state and wished it the best. Consequently, I am totally in support of people who have advocated naming this facility after him eventually as a way of saying "Thank you" for your struggles to give Anambra a befitting international gateway. my plea is that he works hard for a good technocrat that will perform even better than him. So that all these thugs, bandits, and 419 kingpins now calling themselves "businessmen" and masquerading in the hope of using INEC, Police, Supreme court, and rigging to become governor so as to return us to the days of misery, looting and squalor will never smell government house in Jesus name!

@19:06 in the video, you'll hear the Commissioner saying he'll block the departure and arrival passengers from using the same avio-bridges.

I think it'll be an error to alter the original plan of the airport by building another artificial wall to separate arriving and departing passengers at Anambra Intl. airport. No airport in the world has such unnecessary impediments to the smooth movement of passengers in the secured areas of the airport.

Airports only have arrival and departure gates (Outside the building) to make it easy for people coming into or leaving the terminal building to use different access gates to avoid a stampede, but it does not mean the avio bridges gates are designated as arrival or departure avio-bridges. If this alteration in the airport master plan is done, it will create a massive waste of space at the airport. There is really no need to have a dedicated gate for "arrival only" avio-bridge and a "departure only" avio-bridge. Especially in an airport with only 2 gates!

In many international airports across the globe, arrival passengers and security-screened/cleared departure passengers can pass through the secured areas of the airport terminal unhindered. In fact, the seats in the secured areas are meant for the screened departure passengers. Since typical arriving passengers would only pass through the secured area, and go downstairs to the unsecured area of the airport to pick up their luggage from the carousel. Typically the departing passengers will then board the plane that just arrived using the same avio-bridge gate which the arriving passengers just used. For instance, if the flight just came in from Lagos and would be returning to Lagos. The plane isn't moved to another gate/ Avio-bridge after their arrival passengers disembark. Instead, they use the same gate to board their passengers going to Lagos since the plane is already parked there at the gate.

Making one gate to be strictly for "arrival" and another gate to be strictly for "departure" will eventually be unworkable and chaotic. Not to mention the fact that you will keep the gate used solely for departure always packed to the brim without enough available seats, while the chairs in the arrival gate will always be empty. Nobody arrives at a destination and decides to sit down at the airport instead of walking straight to the luggage carousel to take their luggage.

Pictures of terminal building

When the Chinese consortium pulled out of this project, I totally lost hope that it could ever be built.
In fact, I opposed every idea of building it because judging from the mentality of the average southeast governor to do some type of low-quality project just to say they have built an "airport" and considering the paltry level of funding available to the southeast states, in relation to what will be required to build an international standard airport, I considered it a mission impossible. Yet, from what Obiano did at Agulu Lake hotel, the three Awka flyovers, multiple bridges, and completion of Onitsha mall etc, I knew there was something different about Obiano's capacity to deliver projects.

Alas! Obiano launched the airport in early 2020 and simply kept his work more or less unexposed to the media. Obiano was quoted as pleading with Alhaji Hadi Sirika to make space in his calendar to attend the test flight in April, 2021! He also told the Minister that he was at his office to seek other technical assistance, NCAA guidance and not to ask for money for the airport project! At that point, I thought this "airport" would be a tiny aerodrome of about 1.5 KM runway, with the ATC tower mounted on top of the tiny terminal building. However, two respected individuals in the aviation business; Femi Fani Kayode and Allen Onyema granted interviews where they both mentioned that the airport was indeed being built to true international quality and standard! I didn't know if I should believe them or not. However, since they went with the governor's entourage I chose to take their words with a grain of salt. They could just be trying to be "politically correct" by exaggerating what they saw.

In fact, I didn't even want to know what was going on there because I thought it would resemble the picture below of "what Obiano was expected to build". My first true expose was from two youtube videos from NedMedia and Ebo Media respectively. I was shocked that Obiano was indeed seriously building a 3.7 KM runway, had already completed a 300M by 200M tarmac, about to complete an 11 storey all-concrete- ATC tower, terminal building, ~750 car park, and many other facilities SIMULTANEOUSLY! It totally blew me away! How did he do it? More importantly, how come he didn't do a shoddy project like typical southeast governors would? Just to then turn around and claim they "saved" N1 billion naira after building a shameful airport. I was totally dumbfounded after watching those youtube videos. In fact, I got angry at my friends at Njenje Media for giving the airport somewhat bad press as though it was all a fluke and nothing was indeed happening.
[/i]

Today, Obiano has clearly written his name in gold! Not just that he fulfilled a dream of an Anambra airport planned since 1982 during President Shehu Shagari's era (Onitsha airport), followed by Gov. Ezeife's Oba airport project in the 1990s. Obiano went the extra mile to make sure he built a truly world-standard international airport that can compete with similar facilities globally. He also insisted on the appropriate state-of-the-art navigational equipment, including ILS Cat 2 and runway lighting systems! Not to mention building its own water supply systems and state-of-the-art fire station for the airport. Obiano went the extra mile of building a new dual-carriage accessway with bridges in line with the tradition of linking international airports with dual carriage main access roads. Truly, if a future Anambra governor names this airport Chief Willie Obiano International Cargo/Passenger airport, it would be a deserving "Thank you" from Anambra people for not just achieving this lifelong aspiration at the highest truly -international standard, but for the numerous other achievements that Obiano achieved as a governor. Despite the harsh economic challenges during his tenure.

One final thing is that Obiano should remember that this project was promised with an "Airport City" to drive the new Anambra economy. This Airport city would definitely help create world-class modern areas where international companies could be attracted to the state to build their own offices because the entire area is well-planned. Similar to how Abuja was able to attract businesses from Lagos simply for being a well-planned purpose-built city. Obiano's economic and physical development planning team should get together and plan how they could partner with reputable and well-resourced private real-estate companies to gradually begin a phased development of the airport city. This will definitely attract a whole lot of aviation-based companies, hospitality global hotels brands to invest within the airport city. Thus boosting revenue and creating jobs. The beauty of it all is that the state does not need to invest its own funds in building this airport city if it could work out a good MOU agreement with private real-estate investors to do it.

The reason we still enjoy Agulu Lake hotel as a high-quality resort is that it was given to Golden Tulip to manage.
Else, our civil servants would ensure by now that it has no working showers, you would fetch water with buckets to flush the toilets, the environment is overgrown by tall bushes and paints peeling off the walls. Not to mention rudeness to the few guests that would be crazy enough to try and lodge there.

It is more important to think of a sustainability plan through the concession of vital facilities to private sector management. Than to spend billions of naira on projects, installing very high-quality facilities, then you leave these multi-billion facilities in the hands of our government workers. It is a mark of recklessness to do that under the current realities of what we know about government-run facilities.

My fervent hope is that a solid sustainability plan through a concession management deal is being worked out for all these multi-billion naira facilities being built. Else, we would all be shocked at their sorry state just 12 months after they are run by government workers.

Those who are close to the Governor should tell him to build a 4-5 star hotel within the Awka International Conference center (ICC) compound. The space at the right side of the compound can fit a hotel the size of Agulu Lake hotel which measures about 90 feet by 280 feet.

They can even go into partnership with a private establishment to build the right type and quality of hotel needed in that compound. The remaining land for the garden and car park will still be more than enough for the facility.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEIz03gIMnE&t=427s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UYcqPqJaW4

I totally agree with you that it makes absolute sense to build the 4 or 5 star hotel within the same space. Moreover we can still get a car park of up to 400 to 500 cars there. Which is very decent number car park compared to Abuja ICC and others.

The fact that the Awka ICC can accommodate 10,000 people does not mean they will all come in their own personal cars. It is like a stadium with 50,000 sitting capacity does not need an endless amount of space for 20,000 cars. The stadium may never be filled to its sitting capacity and even when such major events happen, there are always buses to convey delegates.

Additionally, a functional hotel within the compound will help guarantee maintenance of the environment all the time. Unlike if the place is only accessed once in a while to clean it up and prepare it for a major event.

I also heard that a restaurant is planned for the building. Which means if the place isn't maintained in a topnotch and pristine way, the restaurant will lack the type of high end clientele to stay open profitably.

All in all, the government planners should think broadly on how to maintain the place to run profitability even when it's not holding a major international conference every week. Which is highly unlikely to happen. The genius is how to put other facilities in the place to ensure that it's always open for business and does not constitute a financial drain on the state to pay for cleaning and landscapers when its it's not holding a major conference. A private sector 4 or 5 star hotel within the vast compound is a smart way to mitigate all these risks of building a white elephant project that ends up being a drain on the state government rather than a self sustaining income generator.

Some are saying that because a airport in a neighbouring state is closer to them than the new one in Anambra, that they’d prefer the closer one! Things aren’t as clear-cut and straight-forward as that...esp’ when emotions are involved!

For instance, some of us prefer travelling with Ethiopian airlines just so we could patronise AIIA, Enugu! Of course the journey will be longer and more tedious as the route is via Addis Ababa, but there’s more to consider besides comfort and quick journey time....if we all went via Lagos, Abuja or even Port Harcourt, then how can OUR OWN grow and become a profitable route!? Also, patronising YOUR OWN will help grow your states’ economy and also help keep the youth employed!

I totally don't believe that mackintosh is Igbo. NO Igbo would go through the pernicious oppression and absolute denial of infrastructure to Igboland we have been subjected to in Nigeria, and venomously fight anyone trying to build something to help the region grow. Like you mentioned, some of us use AIIA not because it is convenient, but because we know there are forces intent on closing it down. The same way we have cheered for Obiano because he had done a good job building an international grade airport in the southeast.

I don't believe that mackintosh is Igbo. Although I know that some clueless Igbo youths can be totally clueless and can't reason beyond their nose in knowing what is for or against their interest. Any sane Igbo person knows that a functional seaport, good rail & road network and good international airport located anywhere in Igboland is a plus for him and an opportunity to find employment. Only a total f00l would argue otherwise and bitterly fight development in an Igbo state as that boy has done. Nobody can be that foolish against his own interest, that is why it is very very clear that he isn't Igbo.

The only reason a soulless demon like Andy Uba would give anyone cause for concern is that Nigeria is the world's leader in sham elections.

Ordinarily, Andy Uba would lose woefully at the polls, but his handlers in Abuja are plotting the Hope Uzodinma strategy of using INEC and the Supreme Court to foist him over the state no matter what. The violence such an enterprise would generate is the reason folks are worried when you see a demon like this on any ticket.

Who won the PDP and APC primaries?
I could not find any credible information on a successful party primaries election.

Not surprising at all if you consider that it's the two biggest organized crime parties responsible for bringing Nigeria to its knees that we are discussing. They will probably impose stooges and try to rig them into office to loot the state's treasury for them.

Anambra international airport update as commissioning date draws near. Anambra is moving upward and forward

I see a lot of Nigerian airforce high-ranking officers (Not security guards) as part of the entourage.

Does anyone know if the Nigeria Airforce has been allocated a spot to build their Umueri Airforce base? If so, I hope they won't distort the airport's master plan by moving their structures too close to the runway or the future parallel taxiway right of way as they did in Akanu Ibiam Intl airport, Enugu. No building at the airport should be closer to the runway than the distance of the current terminal building from the runway. Similarly, the apron whether for MROs or airforce should not be closer to the runway and taxiway than the distance of the current apron serving the terminal building. These standard distances must be adhered to so that the right of way of big cargo airplanes using the airport in the future is not sabotaged by building structures that encroach too close to the main runway or future parallel taxiway.

The Nigerian airforce should learn to build standard airforce bases with both standard respectable buildings and adequate apron space to house their attack helicopters and fighter jets and not park military airplanes next to civilian planes on the civilian apron! They should take a cue from the Indian airforce or Kenyan airforce that builds their own apron away from the civilian apron in many Indian airports.

Anambra State needs Wider roads very urgent!.
--- Onitsha= 4
---Nnewi== 2
---Awka= 4
---Ekwulobia= 1
---Ihiala= 1
---Nkpor/Nnobi---1
---Ezeiweka Obosi= 1
----Atani Road= 1
----33 road to Aguleri=1
---Nnewi to Awka= 1
---Obosi bye pass to Nkpor( 6 lanes)
----Limca road( 6 lanes)
---- St Peter's Road Ugwuagba Obosi to Motor sparse Parts Market (6 lanes) This will help to decongest the Onitsha Owerri road.
Some of these roads needs to be expanded into 4 or even 6 lanes with the next 2 to 4 years unless there will be dreadlocks in the economy!.
A budget of between 30 to 70 billion Naira will go a long way in improving the road infrastructure in Anambra state.
ROADS BUILD ECONOMY AND NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND!.... Economy does not build roads!!!!. Ekenemu unu!!!

Rebuilding and expansion of the roads are just 25% of the problem. 75% of the problem is that the people don't understand the rules and regulations around the prohibition of parking on state roads, stopping vehicles in unapproved locations, and building illegal street shops/kiosks/shanties over drainage channels to quite literally trade on the street! This thing must be enforced so that people learn that it is actually illegal to block the road with their wares or vehicle.

Illegal street parking is more of Anambra's urgent road traffic and road safety problem! The culture of parking on major roads is part of the huge road problem in Anambra state. There is no enforcement of the law prohibiting the parking of vehicles on all Trunk A and Trunk B roads (i.e State and federal highways). In other countries of the world, you can only park vehicles on Local Government roads (Side streets). Even at that, it has to be within a defined space and a certain distance from the curb so that you don't impede the flow of traffic on such streets. These laws are not enforced in Nigeria particularly in Onitsha, Nnewi, and Aba. Even the expressway was used as a truck and disused caterpillar park until Obiano started towing their broken-down trucks and caterpillars away at Nkpor and making them pay huge fines before they are released. Thus, the huge traffic at the Nkpor area of the expressway disappeared.

While I totally agree with you that Anambra needs wider roads (Which may be impossible now without widespread demolitions), we must first enforce the parking laws as a normal country. Then deal with street traders who display their wares on the road. Unless the right of way rules are enforced, even if you build a 10 lane expressway, people will still block them eventually with markets and parked broken down vehicles because nobody stops them from breaking the law.
