Excellent analysis! The point you raised about Osimhen not getting as many clear cut chances as Haaland is that due to quality of service or is his movement still pedestrian which doesn't allow him to occupy space where he would do the most damage? TheLoneCitizen: For those who want to know if Osimhen is better than Haaland, here's what the stats say:
In every other season, Haaland would have trumped Osimhen, but this is the first full season where both players are fully settled and injury free.
So far this season, they've played almost exact minutes so the playing field is level .
1. Defensive striker
During his Lille and early Napoli days Osimhen was a far better defensive striker than Haaland. Better presser and menace to defenders.
But this season under Spalletti, just as Osimhen's aggression has reduced, Haaland’s has increased during his years at Dortmund.
Today, they have the exact same defensive attributes, and anyone who says Osimhen is far better is bias.
Note: Senior Man, Iheanacho is better than both of them defensively. (Iheancho has scored more goals from steals and tackles than both)
2. Finishing.
By this time last year, Osimhen was a wasteful forward, while Haaland was one of the world's deadliest finisher.
Under Spalleti, Osimhen has improved so much that he is toe-toe with Haaland.
Anybody who says Haaland is a far better finisher is working on past glory.
3. Creativity
Osimhen still has loads to do to catch Haaland, but Haaland isn't up to Kels when creativity is mentioned.
4. In every other attribute, Haaland edges Osimhen.
But what statistics wouldn't show you is movement, the most important attribute of any striker, and this is where Osimhen doesn't compare with Haaland.
Haaland’s better movement means despite them being identical in other aspects, Haaland would get 3 goalscoring chances in the same game where Osimhen would get only 1.
This is why last season they missed almost the same number of clear cut chances (Osimhen=14, Haaland=19), but Haaland almost tripled Osimhen's goal return (Osimehn=10, Haaland=25).
NOTE: Haaland is currently on a streak of getting at least one clear-cut chance in each of his past 9 games in all competitions, meanwhile Osimhen hasn't found a big chance in his past 4 games for club. All his goals that period have been half-chances.
Bottom line: Victor is closing in on Erling, but Haaland is not stagnant either. Where he was lagging behind Osimhen, he has caught up, so it's now Osimhen's turn.
APPLAUD HIM, BUT DO NOT OVERHYPE! |

The AFCON was pushed to June/July but the raining season in Cameroon meant it's back to square one. AndSunGorilla: My opinion is that the January AFCON sometimes become detrimental to the careers of African players, truth is some teams would decide against signing too many african players because of afcon. I remember that Oliseh back in the days lost his shirt at Juventus after an AFCON. I really hope the timing could be changed honestly. |

Musa's first goal against Iceland at the World Cup. Elderson's goal against Mali in the semi-final of the 2013 AFCON. You need more examples? Osimhen is faster than Drogba good hold up play but not as as good as Didier's (yet). I think he could become very prolific in front of goal once he works on his shooting accuracy and chance conversion efficiency. 12large1: Am I the only one that thinks osimehn reminds them of drogba (minus free kicks) one thing I love about drogba was that, he might not score 40 goals a season but he will score important trophy winning goals. If osimehn can have drogba type career, that’s good enough for us |

Wakaso yes is not too fancy but I think he has better dead ball delivery than all our midfielders. Amartey and Ekong are not that much different so I might as well settle for pesin wey I know. Kudus I haven't seen play that much to form an opinion about. For Partey it depends how you will play him because he struggles to cover his CB. The game against Crystal Palace on monday highlighted that for me. andrewbaba44: I will take amartey
But you see salisu he won’t start for the eagles
From their midfield I will take partey
Kudus because our AM options are thin
Wakaso will never make the eagles |

Not too sure about that Amartey and Salisu are not exactly reliable CB for their clubs. ChrisKels: In CB, i would sort out the problem the FA has with Salisu, then I would pair him with Armatey and start the pair ahead of Ekong and Balogun.
In the midfield, though my personal opinion, the trio of Partey, Wakaso and Kudus looks better than the trio of Ndidi, Iwobi and Aribo, but it would be a great battle if Onyeka is played ahead of Aribo |

Ghanaian midfield is one area that has always been good since the mid 2000s but their forward line is too heavily reliant on Andre Ayew. Plus they haven't found a replacement for Gyan. One thing I always give to them no matter the quality of their players once they put on the black stars jersey they play with all passion. ChrisKels: In CB, i would sort out the problem the FA has with Salisu, then I would pair him with Armatey and start the pair ahead of Ekong and Balogun.

A club like Ajax will be very good for Amoo's development. He will get good football education plus playing time to boot. Every time I watch him play I just wonder sometimes at the kind of decisions Rohr makes. Everyone including his dog knows the SE is crying out for a creative player. Akinwunmi, Alhassan and Ejaria could have been invited and accessed in June for the games against Cameroon but we wasted our invitation on players who we would probably never hear from again sigh. charlesemeka85: with barca's current state i think getting amoo will help in rebuilding the team going forward. another good club that will aid his further development is ajax |

Gabriel sha don mature abi? He's older than Mbappe and Haaland so please drop the age excuse. Now you have shifted from 'preferred' to tactics. Sorry we are not talking about training but about actual match situations. As good a finisher as Iheanacho is everyone knows he not yet at an elite level of goal scoring. Jesus was bought because Pep thought he had a potential goal scoring machine to match the kind of technical ability he likes to see in his players like a slightly lesser version of Messi. But when the Brazilian didn't set the stage on fire Guardiola quickly settled for the Devil he knew in Aguero and he was rewarded. TheGoodJoe: Gabriel Jesus was a kid for Christ sake. Aguero was the legend. It was purely about tactics.
Said the same about Iheanacho. That Iheanacho scores at every opportunity in training but he wants more from a striker. |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by chrisooblog: 12:39pm On Oct 20, 2021 |
Nope he thought Gabriel had end product if Pep wanted work rate and defensive contribution he would have saved lots of money and just signed James Milner TheGoodJoe: You proved the point here. Whether initially or previously or error, he believed Gabriel Jesus attributes over Aguero's goal machine abilities.
Finito.
What are you guys arguing facts? |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by chrisooblog: 12:30pm On Oct 20, 2021 |
It doesn't prove anything. Pep didn't initially fancy Aguero he thought Jesus would fit the bill the Brazilian largely didn't. Kun till injury and loss of form was still the top dog. Checkout this scenario What you are trying to say is like when Pep sold Ibrahimovic to allow Messi thrive further in Barcelona. Instead of leaving Barca Zlatan stayed and even surpassed Lionel in goal scoring at the nou camp. Then Zlatan leaves but Messi is trying to break into the starting XI while we say Pep preferred Messi over one of the world's deadliest strikers because of work rate and defensive contribution TheGoodJoe:
So you agree Guardiola signed Gabriel Jesus because Aguero despite being lethal in front of goal and one of the greatest strikers in the history of the game.
So he chose to sign a small boy due to his work rate off the ball and benched an attacking legend.
Any thing after that is devoid of the point.
If Aguero improved work rate for game time proves my point. Finito. |

Aguero at the beginning of Pep's era also lacked in this work rate and defensive contributions you are mentioning. However the arrival of Jesus made Kun improve his game to match Guardiola's expectations added to his goal scoring exploits. Jesus on the other hand despite these positive attributes you mentioned which Pep likes hasn't pushed on. How come Kun during this period played almost the same number of league games than the 'preferred' Gabriel? How come despite the injury, loss of form and departure of Aguero the 'preferred' Gabriel is still finding it hard to tie down a starting Xl berth? TheGoodJoe: Which why again?
Work rate and defensive contributions. Also, Gabriel Jesus is very comfortable on the wings and can play as a winger. So he suits Guardiola's player rotational movement s during play.
So Guardiola preferred him to the best foreign attacker in the history of the Premier League.
Is Aguero rated higher that Gabriel Jesus? Yes.
Did he prefer a less rated striker due to the dimensions he can bring to the team? Yes.
So what is the problem? |

Because you said Pep wanted Jesus over Aguero without giving perspective as to why so. Plus your bold somehow suggests that Guardiola has always rated Gabriel over Kun. TheGoodJoe: What does that have to do with the debate? |

But you're conveniently forgetting what happened after Pep 'preferred' Gabriel over Aguero. TheGoodJoe:
Is this part of the debate?
Did Guardiola prefer Gabriel Jesus ahead of Aguero who is one of the deadliest striker in the history of the Game? |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by chrisooblog: 10:46am On Oct 20, 2021 |
The simple reason why Gabriel is not that regular now is because he hasn't pushed on from his initial promise. Pep fancied his talent but when his end product (goals, assists) weren't at the level he wanted he decided to manage Aguero who is/was a proven elite level striker. TheGoodJoe: Whether he still or whether he does not rate is not the point. He preferred a small boy over one of the best strikers in the history of football because of certain attributes.
If you want me to breakdown why Gabriel Jesus is not playing regularly now, I will but that is off the scope of the debate. |

My man Joe even though Pep initially preferred Jesus once Aguero started performing and scoring goals Gabriel was given seat belt on the bench. I remember the hype around Gabriel when he first came in like he was the second coming of Ronaldo de lima. If Guardiola still rated the brazilian that much then he wouldn't be dragging shirt for striker position with Foden, Sterling, Mahrez etc. TheGoodJoe:
Totally off point.

Because of tactical attributes, some coaches will prefer to have Osimhen in their team over Haaland.

Exactly my thoughts. Like everyone else I desperately want a Nigerian player to be hailed and regarded as world class but it doesn't happen overnight. It's a process. Osimhen has started well and looks focused. I'm optimistic he will achieve his potential but let's all slow down with the unnecessary comparisons and hype. He doesn't need all that hype and distraction. In footballing terms Victor hasn't achieved anything major which I believe will soon change. Yes he's the most expensive African but remember once upon a time Denilson was the most expensive player in the world and we all know how the Brazilian's career panned out. Let's just continue to support and pray for the best of our players. Oasis001:

Una no go allow Players blow fess, una go blow their trumpet pass Heaven. Folks ain't gonna learn on this Board.
Osimhen is a fine Player. He's still developing and we should hope he blow past his potentials. Comparing him to Haaland is a big NO, coz the latter is far better than him at the moment.
Haaland of all Strikers? If Haaland is a Nigerian, I am sure he won't be nicknamed Monster Machine but black panther or Nuclear Bomber.
Let's take it easy with our Lads. Iheanacho was once nicknamed hybrid of Messi and CR7, we know what's up today. |
