in lay mans terms, its simply an vehicle where the investment company pools funds from different investors and help to invest on their behalf on low risks assets, typically treasury bills, banker acceptances etc.

The screenshot I uploaded above, shows where the funds of investors are going to.
from that pic above u see that about 46% of the funds are going to Tbills, 40% to bank deposits and 9.9% to commercial papers. with this you know where your money is going to.

There are different departments, if I am to use that word. like fixed income fund or balanced fund, these ones have low-mid level risk because funds here go into the stock market.
.Most people prefer the Money market fund because of its low risk!

You can check up The websites of these Fund managers eg First bank. stanbic ibtc, arm etc to learn better.

Below is the factsheet from first bank 2015 (using this as an illustration)..
- You see where the funds are going to in the pie chart
- You see the yield on a month-month basis
- You see the charges and read the news affecting yields

Regardless of the amount, its best to lock in on the present high rates in Tbills. If possible tick the re-invest option in your form to get a higher yield.

My take is that In money market funds, the rates aren't stable. You may get 18% today, next month it could be down to 16%.

But if you choose let's say 6months in Tbills, that rate is fixed through the whole of that 6months


Look at this FBN fact sheet.
and watch how yields dropped by 2% from November 2015 to December 2015

of course it will
400-500k monthly for a year amounts to
4.8-6m per annum.

with the rates hovering at about 18%
35million should yield 6.3 million Gross!

That's still enough to meet up with his standard of living. However it's best u invest that sun in Tbills where you can lock in on the 18%. With money market fund, the rates could drop further affecting the yield from 6.3 to a lower sum.

Nevertheless, I don't suggest he quits the job

I have invested and withdrew all my money with stanbic leaving only the min. which is 50k. I did not notice any charges, likewise with firstbank. These banks invest in other instruments with your money not only Tbills.

If you had maintained your stance with stanbic, then I may just have agreed but to say that with FBN MMF, you didn't get charged means you are not observant.

Tbills is the BEST when you have money that you will NOT need till maturity. No doubt about that.

But assuming you plan to buy a property and you set standard. It can take a month or two or even longer period for you to get your choice. There's no fixed date. Instead of keeping the money in your account where the bank will be charging for sms, card maintenance , etc. you can chose to do money market fund and liquidate anytime you got your choice of property.

You can lock up a particular amount in tbills while u use mmf for money in case of eventualities.

There is no charge at stanbic mmf, to my knowledge. You can redeem any amount you want at anytime after the first 30 days.

This post is not to convince anyone but to educate people who are looking for opportunities. When I got information like this , I went to stanbic Ibtc like 3 times to make more enquiries and clear any doubt I have.

No investment house will invest on your behalf without a charge. How then do they feed and run the business.

Go and do your research well with stanbic ibtc. there must be a charge!

I haven't terminated before, so I don't know what the penalty charges would, however be rest assured that the charges would be on your interest and not capital.

You guys forget the most important thing, which is rate fluctuation.
With Money market fund, you are exposed to rate fluctuations. Rates that was once high can crash so badly affecting your general roi, likewise it could also increase. ( look below at my screenshot with first bank money market).

But with Tbills you can lock in at a particular rate over the period of time you plan investing....
Ur rate will remain constant for that period of time you are investing.

Also With First bank money market, you get your interest paid Quarterly ( after every three months). With Tbills your interest rate is paid Upfront.

Also the charges in MMF is sightly higher than what you will get in Tbills

0.75% against 0.1% mostly in Tbills

For me I am more comfortable lending to the govt than to banks, I dunno how banks plan to repay investors in time of crisis, but with the Govt I know they can always print currencies!

Tbills over MMF anyday anytime!

I can't even let my sisters marry one who earns 35k monthly. Neither will I as a male be thinking of marriage with 35k.

Money is the no1 problem in marriage, with 35k at stake there will definitely be problems. I didn't grow up in a house where Dad started with 35k, so why should I or my siblings start with such.
