Dis Guy:
maybe you should try and convince them that you will be using the certificate to apply for a master/pgd

what are you going to do after studying?
When you mean convince them? Do you mean I should write a letter of intent and include it in my visa application. In that letter of intent I should explain that I will be proceeding to a masters degree or PGD.

During my studies, I will start scouting for a masters degree but I want to work for a year first, save up some money and then proceed to a masters degree in IT.

@alikote
Alikote:
pls has any done the informational tec professional course in lambton college canada what is the prospect am intrested is a one yr programe
Yes there is Information Technology Professional for one year but it is a graduate certificate that is used to work or proceed for masters like PGD. Most graduates of the program Nigerians inclusive get jobs with Research in Motion those pple who design and create all dem softwares for Blackberry and some other reputable industries. I have their brochures etc and I contacted the Nigerian Graduates of the program via facebook. I think that is the / one of the most reputable program in the college.

There is also Information Technology and Web designing which is 2 years. The advantage of this is you can get 2 years work permit but its up to you.

I applied for the ITP too and I should be getting the decision soon. Yes the job prospects are good, that's one good deal with IT you dont need a masters degree almost immediately its about work experience and your practical hands on experience.

The program comes with a 13 weeks work experience or what peeps call internship or practicum

@gel 03
Are you planning on living in Canada after your masters?

If yes, then I second debosky, I think its better to do a second degree of 2 years that involves internship or work experience. I was in a rush for masters too at first but a very good second degree is better than a random masters degree. While you r doing the second degree then you can map out a structure by then you should have been used to the terrain. You might even get a very good job and postpone masters for later.

If No, then I dont think naija embraces certificates or PGDs when you would be competing with other candidates with 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree from foreign countries infact they would be wondering why u left naija for PGD. But a masters degree is the best bet for you for naija market. And work experience too matters in naija.

Getting into a masters degree in Canada with 2:2 is freaking hard, just pray Memorial University accepts you

@delta

Some colleges are good. All pple have to do is look for reputable courses that have been approved, accreditted, tested and proven to be qualitative and sought after. For example, Lambton College as a whole is not all that but the ITP programs has a lot of job prospects and its respected by even Microsoft and Google these are major players in the IT industry. Seneca college is good too likewise some institutes of technology. I know you love quality likewise me but when u dont get into the best, you improvise & get into the best program in a better inst so stop disliking colleges.

Adios!

Does that mean you can use a rich managing executive in your office or rich family friend as your sponsor when applying for visa because sponsorship is the only visible clause for me.

Secondly how much does the consulate want to see in the account. I am going for a PGD or graduate certificate in Information Technology, the school fees for this program ranges from $11900 to $19990.

Finally, do you think I shld ditch the agencies since they ask for full tuition and I can't afford that, what do you suggest.

@Cavad,

What school and course are you going for so that the gurus in the house can be more specific. I need directions too in that department.
Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada by Cuddlemii: 8:21am On Dec 17, 2010
Most your parents be your sponsor. What if you have a sponsor who has no family linkage to you, can you use that and how do I go about it. My mom doesnt have that kind of money in her account.

I dont think it matters what stage I am in, tuition is a vital topic which has not been fully addressed recently. So if you have any useful info abt tuition please let me know.

I dont have to pay any tuition at all but some schools ask that you pay deposit or part. Then some ask that you pay a month before the program starts.

Shed more light please

Help Help Help

Must someone pay full tuition before applying for visa or during the visa process? All this agents na wa oh. Please does that have received their visa, can you shed more light to the tuition thingy especially if you are going to first for PGD in a college first.

Tuition has been something that has not been fully analyzed in recent times. So gurus in the house please explain

Mini Profile
2.1
3 yrs work experience (NYSC Inclusive)
Don't wanna write GMAT

Thanks Cuddlemii, I'm actually running away from writing GMAT and 2 years at a stretch seems rather too long to stay abroad. Looking at MUN for MER and London School of Economics Msc HRM. Applications still in progress
GMAT is not that bad oh if you have the right materials and tutoring. Anyways the schools you chose are good and LSE is top notch. So I guess you are on track then.

Since you have a 2:1 then I dont think you should apply to just Memorial, you can explore other options you might even get a scholarship. I took out time to visit all universities and colleges in Canada this weekend.

I think Toronto(GMAT & GRE required), York, Mcgill, Royal Roads University, University of Regina all do MHRM

Then some of the schools have masters in management that you have to pick a specialization, concerntration or field which HRM is inclusive:
Wilfred Laurier, University of Lethbridge, University of Sherbrooke.

The colleges also offer HRM too.

About the 1 year thingy, that u have to check on your own cos I think some full time progs are one year then part time 2 years. Me sef this PGD before masters becos of 2:2 is long sturvs, I would have preferred direct masters but hopefully Memorial will determine that.

Best of luck

The whole VIU thing dual degree deal sounds fantastic BUT on 4icu.org the ranking in rather poor, 2000 and sth!!! Oh well, since you've resigned to the one top and one bottom school thing, this should be your bottom ooo. Please any other thing you discover kindly pass on the gist wink

Babes, I think Memorial University is the best for an MBA oh with a 2:2 since its accredited and its ranking is not bad too. Sorry you might not even have a 2:2, what is your profile so I can suggest some MBA programs and info for u.

Thank you very much everyone.

I have an insight to everything now. I will apply to at least 2 masters programs in Canada whether top or below and Let God do the rest. Me on my own would polish & upgrade my IT skills and qualifications as an added advantage for job, I cant shout.

I cant keep obsessing about masters abeg since 2007.

@lanresz, rare & laajman

How is an MBA at Vancouver Island University. Do employers go there too. They dont require GMAT and there is an option of me doing a PGD before the program and getting a dual masters degree in MBA/International business after.

I just want a good school & a good job after, is that too much to wish for, lol

Laajman:
@tosinosho and cuddlemi, nice one oh.
I work in Toronto, and deciding on an MBA programme is a big decision.

A lot depends on what you want from an MBA, seeing that most B-schools (here in Canada) have carved a niche for themselves in diff areas- finance, consulting, marketing,

Also, do you also want to work here after schooling, or return home right away? If you're staying back here, choosing the right school
could go a long way in getting a decent job.

I'm of the opinion that rather than rush into a second-tier MBA which Cuddlemi is obviously avoiding,
its better to get it right first time (you've got only one shot). There's no point, spending all those $$$ on an MBA without
get the best bang for your buck.

Its true that York & McGill are pretty competitive but a lot depends on your GPA, GMAT and work experience.
Don't forget you're competing against '000s applicants from India and China for a space, in addition to domestic students!
@laajman
I am even thinking of changing my masters program from MBA to another program because an MBA is too competitive and so many ranking this, top school that. Other programs dont attract such criticism and employers are aware of all these MBA caliber or class thingy .

I have from now till the end of the week to come with a good program. I dont mind doing a PGD before the masters. I was thinking Masters in Information technology.

Please do you have any suggestions of schoolS that would be easy to get admission and a good job after.

Rare:
@Laajman, I've always believed it should work this way; does it actually ? That was prime in my mind while choosing my school
@Rare, what school would that be.

@Cuddlemii,

I live and schooled in London, but would be going to Canada for graduate studies leading to a PhD in January. Just to let you know about grade requirements. Most schools usually calculate your last two years grade. Even if your overall CGPA is 2.2, your last two years grade might be a 2:1. Also Canadian grading system is different from the Nigerian grading system. So I implore you to send your grades to your proposed university for assessment before applying. If you have a managerial experience, that would also help You can follow the link below for a good MBA program.

If it would interest you, below is a link of Canadian University ranking

Memorial is not a bad choice afterall
Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

I have started looking at the links you posted and would get back to you. In the meantime, what course and school are you going for in Canada by Jan.

@ Cuddlemii,

What's your yardstick for measuring the quality of an institution? Could you list out all the "well ranked" schools that offered you admissions in the UK, SA, Dubai and Ghana, and let's compare their world rating with that of Memorial University,there u'll find the answer to your question about the standard of Memorial University. It's obvious you have not  done your homework.
I use rankings, Accreditation, Career Services, Job placements, Alumni records or feedback from alumnus, Faculty, Concerntration (finance, info sys mgt, supply chain) etc.

1) Bradford School of global management ( Financial times and Economist ranking)

2) Thunderbird School of global management ( 1 in international biz in the world)

3) Ohio State University ( Financial times and Economist ranking)

4) University of Cape town ( Financial times ranking)

5) Lagos Business School

6) University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

The above is a summary of schools I was considering out of the ones that gave me admission

Below are summaries of schools that gave me admission and I didnt consider

1) Wayne State Uni
2) Illinois inst of tech
3) University Of Stellenbosch SA
4) Hult Intl business
Wolverhampton, coventry, hull, Aberdeen, RGU.
british canadian uni dubai
middlesex uni

School that didnt admit:
York Uni
Mcgill Uni

I have not been able to go to my dream schools because of funds so I have to cut my coat according to my size and that is why I am looking for a cheap school with very high standards and would fetch me a good job after.

So please help me

What AACSB list do you have? Please next time learn to check properly before you reply!
Memorial University of Newfoundland  is accredited by AACSB
look at the AACSB link below so that you don't misinform others like you tried to do here sad
https://www.aacsb.net/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?Site=AACSB&WebKey=7DBEF580-E72C-49B5-91BB-6C589B24CC77
There are 3 accrediting bodies for an MBA program: AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA.

A very good MBA programs must showcase the AACSB sign on it website so when I didn't see this I assumed. My bad but there are ways of correcting pple in a better tone. No one is perfect here. Just because you know about AACSB of Memorial doesn't mean u know half of MBA standard.

Why is everyone defending Memorial University. Fine its a good school so let the reputation of the school speak for itself.

@house, please any other school suggestions please

Hey why not check the school out first. You are just there not taken any step stop asking questions and get to work. Mayb you can as well read the posts here from begin you can also get more information.

Take care
This is not my first time applying to schools. I have 6 admission in Uk schools that are well ranked. 4 admission in US, 2 admissions in Dubai, 3 in SA, 1 in ghana, 1 at Lagos business School e.t.c. I previously applied to York and Mcgill because of its standards but they wanted 2:1 or 1st class.

So I am not just sitting here. From all my research, I see nothing fantastic about Memorial University and that is why I am skeptical about the school and I thought this thread could trigger my interest or educate me more. No knowledge is wasted if I get more information from here regardless of if I read the whole thread or not.

Thank you all the same.
