I once knew a girl that was really attractive until she got married, and stopped bleaching. she grew darker and it didn't fit her. Of course for that one example there are like 100 examples of horrible leopard-skinned bleach freaks. But this girl in particular was really attractive when she used to lighten her skin, and became less so when she stopped. Of course I never saw her naked

Its like some guys who look good in a beard but dont grow facial hair easily, or guys who look better clean shaven but are always sprouting father christmas beards. Some people need to find the look that fits them, and I dont think you'd accept 'give up' as a solution if you discovered it was just a few shades of skin tone between you and your ideal look.

Started with BBC basic on a bbc computer owned by a friend of mine who lived in obanikoro. The aim was to make my own computer games.

Got me a basictutor computer afterwards and worked with that. In early to late secondary school I also learned 6502 assembly language in order to add smooth scrolling and sprites to my BBC games, since that machine had no hardware accel like the c64 (which i just read about but never actually programmed for). That early grounding of assembly helped out in my final year at UNILAG!

Started using IBM PCs more frequently in early secondary school- mostly GWBASIC and QBASIC, struggling with the lack of easily accesible machine code and slow execution, but mostly getting nioce results duie to the sheer power of the things.


Got my own computer finally in SS2. Then I started to use turbo PASCAL to produce native machine code programs/games that ran at incredible speeds.

I also used turbo PROLOG out of sheer curiosity, and quickbasic when pascal gave me a headache. I also used turbo C at this time, and tried to learn c++

(I made a brick game just like you did, seun- I called it Matris. Just like tetris, but with a few extras- there was a spinning square at the bottom left of the screen (line drawings and sin/cos functions) that gained or lost sides based on the number of lines you cleared at a time- build a complete square and you score a matris bonus. Minus the additions it was a full featured version of tetris, was proud of it cos i hadnt seen the source of any similar game before that- had to figure it all out on my own! Implemented with VGA graphics and sprites.)

in Uni I of course used all the languages we were tauht, including FORTRAN with which i wrote my final year project. Did work for year 3 and 4 students in year 2 mostly using pascal and c/c++. Did work for campus fellowships using ACCESS- first exposure to sql

internship saw me working almost exclusively with visual basic, access and sql. started the database shindig there.

professionally I now use VB6,  VB dot net 2003 and SQL.

I have used java in the past but never liked it.

had to use php a few times, had to learn perl for some linux stuff. have done linux shell scripting but only scratching the surface

Gamers can be quite sensitive when you talk about them, because we are depicted in a negative light as a matter of course. Check out texazzpetes thread on 'gamer stereotypes' to find out a bit more about that part of the 'gamer mindset'

The truth is, there's *much* to report on the 9ja gaming scene, because its so large, yet so underground, and so unique (since there is no official suppport for any major console here). It survives based almost entirely on a structure of informal business relationships and the international secondary market. You can easily do a half-assed job, but a good job will definitely be an interesting piece of journalism!

Be prepared to make some trips to Alaba, computer village and oshodi- and some trips to LUTH and UNILAG. Seek out a few g-houses. The gamers themselves may be a more difficult prospect though. I don't think I will be available because of my company's policy on granting interviewsx to the press :-(

hmmm. ps3home looks good, but beware- it's an online service and demos of such are never an indication of the final experience.

Sony may not have the network architecture/technology to make it all happen. Also, when you put on your ps3, are you ready to start lounging around a wannabe 'second life' or are you looking to play some games? sometimes simply navigating menus on xbox live isnt fast enough talkless of trudging around in some virtual world.

Pshome also doesn't launch real online games just yet. I wouldn't hold my breath for this.

The ps3 still needs some serious work before it can become a real contender. Next christmas will decide this battle. If sony doesnt have some serious buzz by then, the big buys will be 360s (riding on halo3 hype) and wiis, with playstation getting a 'yesterday's news' tag added to its name, liek what happened to nintendo with n64.

they bothered because in case you havent been paying attention, sony has simply been attempting to blindly replicate the ps2 success story without bothering to look at the much different gaming landscape of today.

they know the ps2 succeeded because of dvd playback and ps1 compatibility. It was a combination ps1 and dvd player at the time when both devices were in ridiculously high demand.

unfortunately today, the whole bluray shindig is beyond the reach pof most people, most people dont know about, want or care about HD, even in shops HDTVs are advertised with enormous blurry standard def video. Here at the palms they have a ps3 on display with a huge 42 inch tv in standard def mode! As a result, it makes more sense today to simply buy a ps2 than buy the bluray-playing ps2.

Hence the low relevance of ps2 backwards compatibility.

Microsoft were much smarter. They realised that with emulation they could support the biggest hits, thus preserving the brand, but ultimately interest gamers in the NEW generation of games. Only now is sony catching on. Microsoft were also smart not to try to include HD playback, as they knew the environment was MUCH different from the one where the ps2 ruled.

finally, remember the ps2 had zero software support when it launched, sporting only a handful of rubbish games and ports, usually inferior dreamcast ports. It still succeeded. Idiot sony thought it would happen again, so they didnt bother to concentrate where it REALLY mattered, ie games for the ps3, hoping that ps2 bc and bluray playback would keep us mesmerised till they got their act together. Of course it didnt work, and today the gaming press is all 'gears of war' and 'wii sports'. What does ps3 have? motorstorm. great.

Dude! Why the hate for RPGs?!!?! I'll have you know that ALL computer games are descended from RPGs as the first computer game ever, Adventure, was an RPG.

I started writing games by studying rpgs. before I got into computers I couldnt get enough of those great 'play your own adventure' gamebooks and the tabletop dice-based rpgs. When we were kids I had a basictutor computer and spent most of my time writing various electronic dice and programs to make the computer act as a makeshift 'dungeon master' for our pen-and-paper d&d sessions. DUDE!!!!

RPGs are more demanding of brainwork than rts, fps, beat em ups, and shoot em ups. YES, I included RTS. And this is from the dude that will KILL you at starcraft and Total annihilation (prhaps any other rts, maybe with some practice, )

turn-based strategy, like civilisation, and srpgs like front mission and fftactics are more cerebral than rpgs, granted, but dont go destroying your credibility by claiming that GOD OF WAR needs more brainpower than final fantasy. If you watched a guy playing ff12, but didnt play it yourself, you are exused for thinking it does npot require any brains. Play one past halfway first (sadly you need to get that far) and then we'll talk.

the problem is with modern RPGs, they try not to scare the unbelievers (like you) away by introducng the HEAVY BATTLES too early, so they make things prett easy. even then with ffx i hear you can just cruise to the end, and all the really intense stuff is optional. If you want an RPG that has no qualms and will slaughter you mercilessly without a second thought, search for breath of fire 2 on SNES emulators and be humbled. Then come back and tell me the RTS is more demanding of the brain. Hiss. Not your fault.

I just got through disc1 of final fantasy 9 and I must say it is excellent! Do give it a go. If you liked the nomura-designed ff's (like ff6) you'll enjoy the characters portrayed here.

I bought a copy of ff8 for ps1 from a shop that didnt know what to do with it. I succesfully ripped discs 1 and 2 to the pc for later play on the psp but discs 3 and 4 have errors :-( Im torn between playing it on the ps2 and hoping the errors dont freeze the game when i get to disc 3, and going to the internet to find discs 3 and 4 (in which casde the ps1 cds are a waste of money :-( )

Actually, Seun, Cosby CAN suceed. Since it has been done before, I dont feel like I am letting the cat out of the bag by mentioning how it can be done.

You see, the problem is not that you don't want your cd to be copyable AT ALL. What you want is for the copies to NOT be perfect, or to be of sufficiently lower quality than the original that the original still retains its value.

The way you do this is by systematically introducing CRC and physical errors to stragegic parts of the disc. The positioning will be largely random but clustered about the middle. The end result is that it is difficult to play the music through a 'smart' player like a CD ROM drive, but a 'dumb' player like a CD ROM in audio CD mode or a CD playing deck will just skip over the errors and continue.

When you do this, the only way to copy the cd will be to grab it off the analogue lines (ie plug in a cable to the line out) and record elsewhere, either to tape or hard disk. There will be degradation due to the analogue copy- hence we have achieved our aim: the pirated copy is not as good as our original.

Of course if the original is of poor quality already there will be no difference!

Another method is the SONY rootkit method where you infect the user's pc with a trojan (read: VIRUS) that intercepts any attempt to copy and blocks it. SONY did this recently and had the pants sued off them. Proceed with caution as you may damage your reputation by doing this.

both these methods have been used already to protect game cd/dvds. Read: safedisc and securom for method 1, and the evil and horrendous starforce for method 2.


The final method is, of course, to realise that it is useless and daft to fight digital copying, and that an uncopyable orginal is in fact lower quality than a pirated copy, since i can use a pira cd to fill my ipod while your 'uncopyable' rubbish is only iuseful in a car deck, and to understand that the only way to fight piracy is to first realise that people copying for personal use (or even to give to their friends) are not your enemy, and that the alaba boys racketeering the shiznit ARE the culprits. Trace the professional pirates and jail them. Stop being lazy and/or stupid and stop persecuting the consumer or the pirates will become heroes. Look at what is happening to the US music industry.

you said the wii has a younger target audience. I disagree. whether or not you like it is your opinion, but the target audience is NOT a matter of opinion, its a matter of fact, and the wii is NOT targeted at the kiddies like a fisher price toy.

Anyway, the point is not that they used adults in the ads- the point is that the people they used in the ads are *not* typical 'hardcore' gamers for the most part (ie male 18-34) but are people you most likely will not associate with game playing- middle aged men, old people, housewives, little girls, adolescent girls.

Did u notice the few times they showed a 'hardcore' dude he was sitting alone playing red steel (a first person shooter) or a sports game. Obviously the ads are meant to show the target demographic, and it is most definitely not the under-twelves.

Wii is aimed at the generation of gamers who may end up becoming lapsed gamers because they are outgrowing their hobby. I have a stack of ps2 games i have never put into my ps2 even once. Just today I aquired yet another game i may neever play (ff12 on ps2). I just keep telling myself 'when i have time' but there's never time. Thats because most of the time i'm working, or dont have up to 2 hrs to kill at a time (so i end up playing something i can drop easily, like need for speed carbon, which i have finished by the way, ) or there is a girl/woman or someone else that isnt 'hardcore' nearby and i cant bore them by decapitating heads over and over in God of War.

Wii is aimed at people like me. I havent seen the game I'm looking for yet on it, but I'm sure that if it will appear on any console, it will be wii. That game is a simple one that i can teach anyone to play in 2 minutes, is fun to play for 2-4 people, does not alienate the female and elderly with death, blood and boobs, and can be played for 20 minutes at a time. Most wii games fall into this category already, but I'm waiting for the one that appeals to me *personally*. Once it shows up I'll probably buy a wii and that game alone and be done with it.

on my p4 630 3ghz ht with 1gb ram and radeon x800, ffx is playable with a good framerate.

However i just bought a ps2 and all of a sudden the emulation seems like a waste of time! Get a real ps2 and save yourself the hassle.

ps2 games are difficult to emulate because the hardware is all customised and poorly documented, and the arcitecture of the main processor is quite different from the cisc stuff the emu writers are used to working with. The emotion engine is a bitch to program for, let alone emulate.

I hope u know that the people using pads to play will have auto-aim.

Also the games that allow cross-platform multiplay will be specially designed for it, so u may see things like 'quickturn' buttons for the pad people, etc. It is true that all those so called halo players will DIE when faced with a REAL fps controller, but if the game was designed with smokin' keyboarders in mind, they can easily program a pad to KILL.

nintendogs is a mature game. It's a pet simulator, only a 'game' in the loosest sense.

Animal crossing is a mature game for a similar reason- like second life what it really is is a sort of 'chat room' with stuff to do when you get bored.

both games will appeal to older people that unlike us, are not so into GAMING as to feel insecure by the sight of cute or pleasant graphics. Afterall millions of office workers use explorer with its cute dog, and office with its office assistants- or IM's with their cute smilies. They aren't as sensitive as we are to cute graphics because we have many bad memories of people calling us 'immature' because we played with mario games, and good memories of escaping that 'immature' label when the games began to feature bloodthirsty mass-murdering maniacs that indulge in human sacrifice and infanticide (Kratos from God of War)

@echowords- the wiimote becomes a regular pad when you turn it sideways. Also, the nunchuck when connected to the wiimote makes a powerful controller that can adapt to many types of game, soccer is but a simple matter. ALready Madden on the wii is recieving praise for its innovative control scheme on the wii.


Finally you guys that are jumpting on the ps3 bandwagon I hope u know that all kinds of crap has been happening on that front recently. Apart from losing exclusives like no mans business, the ps3 is also losing backwards compatibility:

Sony has realised that the ridiculously expensive ps3 is a huge mistake, and are making changes for europe that will probably dovetail into the US and japan soon.

What they are doing is removing the PS2 hardware that they put inside (to enable ps2 games to work on the system) and using an emulation method like MS did with the 360. This will bring down manufacturing costs so they wont take as much of a loss with each sale, and also so they will be able to actually manufacture more units than before.

THE PRICE WILL STILL BE THE SAME. In fact it will be more expensive in europe, with Greeks expected to pay the equivalent of 675 pounds, convert to dollars if you like (!!!!)

They will publish a backwards compatibility list soon. Lets pray their emulator is as good as the 360 one, remember MS bought connectix and are in control of the virtual PC emulator for macs, the 360 is like a mac (ppc) and the xbox is like a pc (intel). Sony is however just jumping into the water with this one, do they have the skill to do good software emulation or are they just going to fashi backwards compatibility?

GOW2 is for ps2, not ps3. To sony right now, people buying more ps2's is not a good thing. (hence backward compatibility)

dmc4 may end up being good, but, we have seen nothing of it. PLUS it may end up on 360, if the recent trend is anything to go by.

ff13 is not a sure banker- the creatoprs of final fantasy have left the company to work for miocrosoft, so whatever ff13 is ff in name only.

At the end of the day, the only real great hopes for ps3 are killzone, motorstorm and mgs4. Not exactly a huge lineup.

Sony has their work cut out for them with this console.

If we decide to disregard all the 'God-type' characters and focus on sheer combat ability with no magic assist, then the number one is definitely Kenshin from rurouni Kenshin. Say what you want about shishio, enishi or soujiro- NONE of them can beat the Amakakeru, and NONE of them can face the battousai. Kenshin is just the man and no-one has skills to match him.

If we say, OK magic assist allowed but not to Godlike levels, then it should be Naruto. The power of the Kyubi is not only limitless it is imposssible to eliminate. (I am talking based on the anime oooooo pols no manga spoilers!) I believe the Kyubi is greater than Goku's saiyajin power and Ichigo'shollow alter ego. It is the greatest tailed demon .

Now we ignore magic assist and talk abvout weapons- well what better weapon than a great mech?

wii games will not be designed to be played for 20 hrs straight. I say THANK GOD! just on sunday i decided to try out supreme commander and had to abandon the game when it threatened to thriow \my whole weekend down the drain. And it was just one battle- I could easily have l;ost and had to start again. NOT what I need niow that my time is so precious.

Your so called 'mature' games are just called mature bnecause of blood guts and naked boobs. Thats an adolescent's idea of 'mature'. Real mature games are games like sim city,nintendogs, animal crossing and brain age which address real issues, and there are more of those on nintendo. Realistic graphics only make it more difficult to sell a violent game as a mere diversion and not some sick power trip fantasy. To be honest with u, I love gears of war, but if I had it on pc i'd have NO QUALMS about turning off ALL the advanced graphics if my computert couldnt handle it. Reason? By now I have figured out that the graphics add little or nothing to a game. I played halo1 on PC with a 9200se, almost all shaders turned off and it was still one of the best games i ever played. I played doom3 when i had my 9800PRO 256mb with all settings on max plus stebncil shadow volumkes and iot was still boring rubbish. HL2 despite a less sophiosticated gfx engine came across as better due to excellent artwork, characterisation, and other cool technology like interaction with the environment. GEARS is awesome not because of its graphics but because of the amazing balancing of its pop-and-shoot gameplay.

If nintendo believes they can delivewr without 10,000,000 polygons then more power to them. In fairness to you, I think the wii is actually rather seriously underpowered- at least they shopuld have let perform to the extent where gfx limitations wont force gameplay changes but it seems thats the case (devs say) but by no means is the overkill of 1080p a viable draw for me. A psp screen is big enough for a good game.

The writing on the wall now is that Nintendo is making a comeback, and if Sony doesnt wise up soon they are finished.

personally I think what is happening is this- we, the nintendo generation, outgrew our mario's and sonics and needed bloody, violent, sex-filled games like GOD OF WAR but nintendo failed to provide them. enter sony.

Now, however, we have outgrown all that mayhem and we need fun games we can use to relax, or play with our newfound wives, girlfriends and children. Nintendo realised this, having missed the bus the first time, and have made a comeback with the ds and wii, and games like brain age, nintendogs and wii sports which appeal to all ages and are fun in a family setting.

I personally think decapitating heads in gears of war is the total BOMB but I challenge you to find five women who agree, and that you know personally. The more blood, more tits and more ass style of gaming is going out of fashion and sony with it.

Finally, for those who say that insane violence isnt going away, and at worst will become a niche like nintendos kiddy games during the n64 and gamecube days, note that Microsoft is stealing sony's ;lunch wholesale in that area. At the moment the only real exclusive franchise the ps3 has left is mgs4. tekken and ff13 are not a sure thing, asassins creed, gta, pro evo, fifa, ut2007, fight night, and almost everything else that was exclusive to the ps3 has jumped ship to 360. Worse still, many of them look better on the supposeldy less powerful 360.

in 9ja we love ps, but its only because we can't *really* afford games, and ps games are pirated like no man's business.

However, recent sony consoles are bucking this trend- still no pira psp or ps3 games, and there probably never will be (UMD and Bluray are not open standards). However the PSP is seeing a lease of life because of the craze of downloading pirated psp ISO's

Bottom line- sony's popularity in 9ja means JACK in the global picture of things. so lets forget what we think over here and look at the global picture.

Gamecube and xbox lost to ps2. over four years ago. Thats ancient history.

DS and PSP were launched against each other. PSP is the most poweful handheld you can buy for games (i attest to that as a proud owner of a modified psp) but is ridiculously expensive and not innovative (just a big gameboy advance). DS is much less powerful, but cheaper, and loaded with innovative games you cant find elsewhere.

The DS is murdering the PSP at retail so completely it is almost a sick joke. sony will soon have to scrap the psp (i dread that day because its lovely to play pirated iso's on the machine! Of course those of us who bought the psp for pira are only making sony's case worse!)

The wii is slaughtering the PS3 just as mercilessly and, it is cheaper, less powerful and more innovative than the powerful and expensive ps3. Obviously things are going the same way as with the ds- Dont be surprised if sony is reduced to an also-ran in the gaming world soon.



The only thing that can save sony is the hardcore community in Japan. And the japanese all seem to be buying wii's.
