Uhmmm, I think it depends on what you want from the girl. So, I'll assume you are referring to a serious relationship.

Well, this is 21st century, so procedures don't follow the medieval pattern anymore.
It starts with friendship of course. I can only take it further with a girl that's my friend. In friendship, I know a lot already about her. We discuss about our problems, future plans, career etc. While being friends, I can have good insight about her background and expectations.

I fairness, I can tell if we can take it a step further towards relationship or not. I can never marry a stranger. In fact friendship is a true test of genuine interest. I can only marry my female friend.

To answer your question, I think it might take months. Time is also a good test of affection.

I've attended two already and had to travel through 3 states to attend the weddings.

Marriage is a place of dialogue. I don't like the word obey. I'd prefer listens to his wife's opinion or advice. My wife should be the concluding part of me, so i wouldn't do anything outside our mutual agreement.
There is always a way to handle women as regards their contributions, advices and opinions.
A man in love, will always listen to his wife at least, even if he thinks the contrary. He then finds a way to maturely relay his opposing ideas in reaching a mutual conclusion.

Matters of one's family must be handled intelligently with a good balance between one's immediate family and the extended family.

The word LOVE is actually is a powerful word to be used anyhow. Falling in love takes into consideration a lot of things; physical attraction, sex-ual attraction, mental attraction, financial attraction, cultural/parental attraction, behavioural attraction amongst others. How many of these things can we ascertain over a faceless forum where wacky posts seem to be the order of the day.

But then, different things drive our attraction to the opposite sex. For example it is possible I admire a particular username (especially female) because of some reasons;

sensible posts;
good command of English language;
moderately humourous nature;
responses to insultive comments;
maturity;
practical advisory posts;
creativity;
appreciable profile pic;
diversified and broad knowledge base.

(Funny thing: I know a username with these qualities. Even if you ask me i won't tell.)

If I find these qualities in the posts of a female username for example, its possible I'd want to meet her and know some other things about her. If her true personality reflects what I admire in her posts, anything can happen from there, after-all, we find love in strange places.

So, we can find good buddies on a faceless forum but extending the feeling further to falling in true love would take some other inputs outside the forum.

In fact we have similar stories. I also joined NL in 2007 just to receive updates on job vacancies after my youth service. I started active posting only about 2 months back, but I must tell its been fun all the way.

Most times at work, I just toggle in between NL Romance section topics, just to catch fun.

From your responses so far, I can tell this guy irritates you. But then, you did not tell us something; what do you mean by you guys are north and south? Why do you think he's got no chance at all. Is he short, fat, black, with tribal marks, hunch back and does he also snore?  

Please don't attempt to disgrace him or make him feel less of a man. Whatever your decision is, let him always respect your maturity in handling things.

We guys can be funny sometimes you know. It is possible he knows you feel uncomfortable around him, making him decode it for something else (you falling for him). Trust me; we know when ladies are trying to avoid us and we can read it to have different meanings.

Don't try to put him off. You can smartly turn the table around. Take the game to him. Why don't you start a conversation with him; ask him about his girlfriend, past girl friends and his parameters for selecting girls. Tell him confidently about your boyfriend and why you love him so much and why you can never leave him for anybody else.

Well, as an African, I must tell you it won't be easy for a hard working husband to see himself lose the battle of the bread winner in his own home. By nature, we kinda like to be in control of everything including the finance.

But then, westernization is taking its turn. Women are getting more empowered and we men are learning to move with the trend. If I have always had a female boss, why can't I have a higher-earning wife?

I think the man's level of maturity and exposure comes into play now. If I'm married and after some years, she starts to earn more than me; I guess I should be able to understand.

I must have watched her grow in career over the years. I would have been a part of her rise in career and success as we we'd have discussed and advised each other on how to handle business and career scenarios. If the cash now starts rolling-in, I think I should be proud of her as she is a product of my advice and guidance.

Well I think I do.
It was in my first year in the Uni. we were level mates and she was about to be awarded the most beautiful fresher on campus. I happened to be her tutor in some first year courses. We got closer, we read together all night at different places including my room (stayed off campus) and we both felt something; I guess. She was the first to be sensitive about us while I was the Sanguine. She tried to caution and model me towards her ideal kind of man. I was jelling, and in the act, I began to fall slowly. Her presence near me began to quicken my heart rate, making me uncomfortable. She couldn't look me straight in my eyes anymore. She was 18, I was 19. I always smiled to her which she always returned. I never said anything. I was a big slacker then. (You can't blame; it my first time of feeling for someone).
Exams started in Dec '00, She left on the day of the last paper (Dec 15). She gave a very tight warm 45 sec hug before she left town for home that same day. The same day, her award was announced which was received by her friend on her behalf.

I promised to speak up whenever we resume in Jan 01. Nationwide ASU strike came and we never resumed until Aug 01. By then, things had gotten messy.

I lost her. The feelings were now weaker since it never had the chance to materialize. We were still friends but it became obvious we'd never be more than that.

We graduated in Aug '06 (Engineering). She's married now with a kid and by some strange reasons, she still calls me her husband, even in front of her husband.

Those five months were still the best part of my emotions and affection till date. I never for once thought about sex for those five months. I only wanted to tell her that I was falling in love with her but I couldn't.

Since I'm not a lady, I'd only speak from a guy's point of view.

Maybe what we men call love isn't really love. Maybe it is strong-likeness. This is why it is possible to get intimate pleasures from elsewhere while we spend homely and heartily comfort with our so called love. Cheating to a guy is majorly sex. If the possibility of sex is removed from this world, the word cheat would be removed from the dictionary.

So, to him, he's in love with his wife, fiancee or girlfriend while he can get cheap sex from that LASU girl that is always requesting for recharge cards.
They are just two separate things to him. With his wife, he can share his savings, future plans, dreams, kids, prayers, home, business and even his heart unlike the other temporary girl outside.

But then, my belief is; if he is truly in love (according to the actual context of falling in love), it would be impossible for him to cheat. The true love for his woman would be too much/strong on him to be sexually attracted to someone else. By some strange means, you are just satisfied with whatever you get from her.

And yes it is possible and I also pray I find one.
