then.. dangote would have monopolised air.. one would be paying to breathe air
What is even sad is that when this guy loses, PDP would come back again and instead of focusing on governance they would turn on there enemies in the other party. Nigeria deserves much better than both parties.

By the way, were these positions advertised?

Useless government
Abi o! I wonder why they were not advertised . It's so sad how things work in this country. First of all, the underlying issue here is that things are too centralized in this country. You don't have the federal govt hiring and firing people who run airports in majority of advanced countries.

In addition to that, Ministerial positions in states should not be appointed by the governor, they should be elected by the people during elections. The police commissioners, inspector generals, state ministers of finance, justice, of should all be elected along with other public officials like the governor and president.

With the way Fayose was able to withstand the EFCC can you imagine what he would do with a police force behind him?

Fulani herdsmen constitute a security problem to the country and I do think that Federal government, being in charge of security of the country, should also take responsibility in handling the Fulani herdsmen terrorism. Nevertheless, I do agree with Obasanjo that state government must also have an input.
Things are too centralized in Nigeria. Cities don't even have there own police talkless of local govts because we have a national police force. In other countries, i can't even imagine having a national police force. Local govts should be granted full autonomy to provide services for there constituents like electricity, water, roads, education and most importantly SECURITY.

Southern Nigerians are wannabe Westerners. I respect Northerners for there authenticity.
You see the thing about Westerners is that they tend to love originality and uniqueness, not poor immitations of there own culture.
There is a reason why Fela has a show about his life and Davido doesn't.
Northerners have such a rich history and that's why foreigners like Lord Lugard loved the North more than the South.

They truly need to amend the Constitution to exclude public officials be it at the state or federal level from immunity from criminal prosecution. I can understand civil suits but when it comes to criminal prosecution, no one should be above the law or democracy would not have its desired effects in this society.

Man, that's a scary thing to even contemplate. This is why Nigeria needs someone who is unaffiliated with any political party to run for elections. It seems that all these parties are all the same.

I never said he did. He definitely had the backing of most governments. Ever read of what happened to Soviet Union when it broke up? Most monopolies have the backing of the government.

If monopoly is allowed to continue, large percentage of employees will earn petty wages/salary while few will earn more. No competition to threaten the market holders.

Not too far example is MTN and Globacom. MTN insisted that PSB is not possible until Globacom came and hit the market. Where do you think we would have been of there was no competition?

How many examples should I cite? Coca Cola, 7Up Bottling Company, Toyota, Hyundai?

Let competition thrive and the consumers will know the best place to pitch their tent.

Like I said earlier, I like his business acumen. Exploring opportunities. Ciao.

I hope we disagree to agree. wink
Well whose fault is it that interest rates are prohibitive in this country making it difficult for other Nigerians to have access to capital like Dangote? Please don't blame the man, go and blame the people who ruled the country and the central bank.

Impressive.

To those looking for factories and other things, Lagos shouldn't be the place for that. London has Canary Wharf. New York has Manhattan. UAE has Dubai. So, this is absolutely a wonderful initiative and if well executed, with a proper financial district in mind - it could end up becoming the financial centre of Africa. And that right there is much more valuable than oil.

Salute to the fact that they're slowly but surely executing. Hopefully, the end game would follow the same path.

If only the Lagos state govt had focused instead on building a power plant (be it coal, hydro or solar) that would provide Lagosians with constant electricity and get Lagos state out of the national grid, that would have been a much better investment in my book. What is holding this country back besides corruption and mismanagement is lack of constant electricity.

I am on your side on this one (and a firm believer in manufacturing), but I think the answer for why they're doing this is:

1. there is a demand for luxury accomodations in Nigeria that will pay from day 1.
2. factories and industry is risky business when you have to supply your own electricity, water, light
3. who knows how much you will pay for machines and raw materials as the exchange rate bounces all over the place
4. the quality of labour is low (compared to other countries), due to many factors
5. Nigerians won't buy your products (since it's made in Nigeria)
6. apart from a few sectors, competition from abroad (with lower costs of production) will wipe out your profits

In light of these, the question to me becomes, "who in their right mind would build a factory in Nigeria?" It's sad, really. embarassed
Of course, we have our few giants of industry, but for the most part, there's more profit in luxury accommodations, than there is in manufacturing, today. Besides, it will grow the economy in terms of office space, hotels, luxury apartments and the like.
If only he had used all this money to build a power plant be it coal, hydro or solar that would provide Lagosians with constant electricity and get Lagos state out of the national grid, that would have been a much better investment in my book. What is holding this country back besides corruption and mismanagement is lack of constant electricity.

That's not the job of the govt, there job is to create an environment where business can flourish.

How is Lagos state different after 17 years of the Association of ProgeTHIEF Criminals, APC with something as basic as tap water missing talk less of education for all children?
Crab mentality, sometimes referred to as crabs in the bucket (also barrel, basket or pot), is a way of thinking best described by the phrase, "if I can't have it, neither can you." The metaphor refers to a bucket of crabs. Individually, the crabs could easily escape from the bucket, but instead they grab at each other in a useless "king of the hill" competition which prevents any from escaping and ensures their collective demise. The analogy in human behavior is claimed to be that members of a group will attempt to negate or diminish the importance of any member who achieves success beyond the others, out of envy, spite, conspiracy, or competitive feelings, to halt their progress.

Very terrible trend in the country.
One person rapes the masses and then passes to other members of gang.
This is why we need to get rid of allocation. Nothing fuels corruption more than excess money especially if its money you didn't work for.
