becko! can somebody please tell me why our nigerian children are ashamed of their names ?
what is wrong with it ? is it because we are a little diffrent when it comes to pronouncation and spelling ., but what about the asians, the indians, the spanish and the french ,  most of the naija kids when asked " what is your name?" instead of saying Ugochukwu or Chimezie or Ijeoma they say bobby , chi-chi, or omy ,  WHAT IN THE WORLD ! Nwatakiri kedu ihe bu ahagi ! Gini bu aha nna gi ! Geesz ,  What is bobby ?! Mechae onu gi ! Going back to the main topic , , why do you think our nigerian kids are ashamed of their names? where do they get it from ?! is it their[parents' fault ? where is naija heading from this ? Im all about culture and tradition ,so when i hear this it really shames me ., what can be done about this though? what is it about our name that we can't stand up tall and say it with PRIDE !
ada beke,
May the good lord bless you in more ways than you can imagine. I have been wanting to raise this issue for a while now.

Growing up in Nigeria there are parents that give their children ONLY English names (I don't even support giving children English names. Have you ever seen an English person running around with an Igbo name? Yet Nigerians - especially IGBOS love to give their children stupid English names because they think those names are better) and they see people value English and other foreign names over Nigerian names. They see people with only Nigerian names called bush or razz or backward, so they internalize these ideologies and either change their names, start to answer only their English name, or they abbreviate their Nigerian name to a more English sounding nickname.

Look at what is going on in Nigeria. There are thousands of Nigerians with very stupid English names such as Bright, Million, Brilliant, Happiness, Blessing, etc.

Isn't a name in your language ten times better than a nonsense name in English? Yet people (and even educated people) continue to give their children such incredibly stupid names in English just so they can say the child has an English name

I once met a couple that actually named their unfortunate daughter Queen Elizabeth. I couldn't stop laughing. It's too sad.

Nigerians need to wake up. Stop worshiping White people. Yes, someone is going to deny it but we do. To some relevant extent, Nigerians overglorify White people and everything about them and that is why we continue to punish our children with bullshit names like MoneyHard, Pleasure, President, and goodness knows what else.

All my children will have Igbo names ONLY (unless of course their father is from a different tribe or country - then they will also have names from his tribe or country) That is the only way I will tolerate a foreign name for my children.

When you find a White Ngozi you let me know.
Sugabelly,
Thank the almighty God too for your wisdom jare, the thing is sooooooooo annoying.

I can tell if a child is british brought up or nigerian brought up by my first interactions with them.

Over here, I say hi to a 3 year old and she might look at me with disdain and say No in a cute way, and when you play with them they hit you hard. In Nigeria, I put my had out once to a cute child to say hi and the went on her knees and said good afternoon, i was in shock as i was not used to it anymore.

That to me is signs of good upbringing.
Thank you o jare, some of the children here sef wan ti baje ju jare.

Bawomolo,
You keep confusing correlation with causation. Because Nigeria is in a state of disarray because of our terrible politicians and bureaucrats does not mean that the way we discipline our children is poor.

The bible says it in the book of proverbs time and time and again that we should flog our children lest they go wayward, this has worked for thousands of years and this is what built up the british empire, now look what has happened to them.

And after the 6 years, i would have forgotten most of the little I learnt and went to a crap university where my aspirations would have been lower and ended up struggling in also-ran, low-paid jobs and moaning about how I will ensure my kids don't make my mistakes.
I didn't even want to come to yanki sef, i was hoping to go to  UNIPORT or ABSU (Abia State University) so that i could "cruise" around with my friends in my dad's 505, and pick up chicks. IMAGINE angry I can't even begin to imagine how my life would have turned out if that had happened, i probably would have joined "cult" by now or done something incredibly stupid.

How many parents actually have the time to pick up the phone calls, what makes you think your child won't erase the VM before you get home?
And we're talking about Africa here were some don't have phones.
I've known people who gives the teacher their friends numbers to call
.
So how does the child actually learn anything from that?
Thank you jo, they think that the American style would work especially in a village in Africa.

CHILDREN NEED DISCIPLINE AND STRUCTURE.
When a mother cannot discipline her children, then they might drive her crazy, abi una never hear wey woman go kill her children? The women snapped because they couldn't control there children. The news is filled with countless breadwinners who slaughtered there children.

I don't think any child should be given a choice when it comes to education. They shouldn't be allowed to decide if they want they want to take their education serious by doing their work or studying etc.

It's a must! If you don't, then you MUST be punished.

If every child in school has a choice to go to school, more than half of them would decide not to go.
FL Gators,
Thank you o jare. If i had the choice of going to school on monday morning when i was  in primary school would i have ? HECK NO. The problem i have with yanki is that too many parents allow there children make fateful decisions at such a young age. CHILDREN NEED DISCIPLINE AND STRUCTURE.
When a mother cannot discipline her children, then they might drive her crazy, abi una never hear wey woman go kill her children? The women snapped because they couldn't control there children.
EducationRe: Nigerian Schools' Disciplinary System; How Effective Is It? by davidif: 11:38pm On Jul 06, 2009
bawomolo
When Nigeria becomes a developed country, then we can start allowing our kids to major in "Russian studies" but for now, you do what you gotta do or else they should pay for there tuition themselves.

Look at yanki, the govt is even complaining about lack of scientists and engineers because too many kids are now so lazy, they want to take the easy classes and just get an easy degree (i.e marriage counselling or elementary primary education). American students are becoming fewer and fewer in the sciences and the gap is being filled with foreign nationals (read: H1B's) and a ton of foreign students.

the same thing was said to quincy jones and berry gordy. see where they are.
For every berry gordy and Quincy Jones, there are hundreds of thousands of Tyrones and Donte's who drop out of school to start a music career and don't make it and they end up getting caught in the penal system. Is that what you want for your kids.

we have countless number of Engineers, scientists etc unemployed and bitter.
Unemployed, yep i understand that one, but bitter, i would kindly love you to show me the data on that one. In fact, the survey should be titled "how many scientists and engineers are bitter about there jobs".
EducationRe: Nigerian Schools' Disciplinary System; How Effective Is It? by davidif: 11:26pm On Jul 06, 2009
Mrs. oyinda, are you kidding me?? how many wealthy americans do you know?? I thought so. A lot want there students to do something meaningful with there lives. End of story.

Look there is something called supply and demand. Scientists are well paid than there counterparts in other fields so it is logical for any parent (especially in third world countries) to send there kids to study science. Personally, i can't imagine me paying for my children's tuition to go to school to study "music" or "childhood development". If they want to do that, then they can pay for there tuition themselves.

chinese ppl definitely steer their kids to the arts. some of the most accomplished musicians (instruments ex piano violin etc) are chinese.
WHAT?!?!? because Yo yo ma happens to be chinese, does that mean that chinese people love to steer their kids to the arts. Just go ask your average chinese friend (not chinese american but mainland chinese) and see what i am talking about.
EducationRe: Nigerian Schools' Disciplinary System; How Effective Is It? by davidif: 10:56pm On Jul 06, 2009
bawomolo,
"Spare the rod and spoil the child", geez this has worked for centuries and it still continues to work. Our system is NOT PERFECT BUT IT WORKS. GEEZ. Go to any inner city school here in yanki and you will see what i am talking about. When your daughters now become "baby mamas" or start using excuses like "i ain't smart" not to excel in school then come talk to me. Children need STRUCTURE AND DISCIPLINE especially when they cannot get it at home. I agree that discipline (flogging) needs to be complimented with other subtler methods, and that we cannot be flogging children all the time, on this point, you are definitely right, soft power works most of the time but to say that we should discard discipline is a terrible thing. What do you do if a student puts his feet on the desk when you are teaching or starts misbehaving and distracting the class? I don't know about you o, but i just don't want my kids shooting each other (go to miami-dade county public schools) in school or bringing knifes to school, just go to England and see what i am talking about.

such unnecessary pressure has led to a situation where people strive for the best grades rather than striving to learn what interests them.

this can be seen in Nigerian parents that all want junior and chioma to be in science class among the "geniuses" even though chioma wants to a lawyer some day.

We all talk about soft disciplinary system in the west but why are we living in the west and not under the taliban?  Violence should never be the first response.
Are you kidding me?? we are from third world countries and not western countries so we don't have the privilege of taking aesthetic classes or "following there dreams" ( i can't imagine how my life would have turned out if my mom had ended up being an artist despite the fact that she was very talented). WE HAVE TO BE PRAGMATIC just like the Israelis, Chinese, Indians are. If you think that the Nigerian parent is pushy, then wait till you see an Israeli or Chinese mother. Israel is where it is today because it encourages its best students to go into science and not finance. I know this is not a popular issue, but the truth is that NO COUNTRY CAN DEVELOP WITHOUT SCIENTISTS period.

I am sorry but i am not going to send my kids to go to cambridge university in England to study Greek Philosophy. A lot of wealthy Americans who send there children to Ivy League schools feel the same way. Some parents even believe that "unnecessary" classes like music education should be banned in high schools.

Proverbs 31:10-31 (King James Version)

10Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

are u talking about Muda Lawal or Mathematical, arguably the greatest footballers that ever played for the country alongside the like of Adokiye Amasiamaka, Inua Rigogo, Thunder Balogun et al . . .ABEG STOP AM IF NA JOKE ! those players were far better than the Okochas and Kanus . . .forget the fact that they were home-bred
kitaun,
If they were all that great, how come they didn't qualify for the World Cup? or how come they couldn't get careers in Europe afterall, weren't the likes of Fashanu, Roger Milla and Abedi 'Pele' Ayew tearing it up in Europe? Please because someone can dribble does not make them an excellent player. A prime example of this is Denilson. End of story.
