CultureRe: This "akata" Non-sense Is Funny: Give It Up. by davidif: 11:34pm On Jul 05, 2009
akata simply means african american period. There is no other word for African American in our culture. How do you expect me to be speaking my language then immediately switching to english just to say African American? Isn't akata a shorter word?

There are these thick yoruba, hausa and igbo accent that make English very unappealing. Sorry to say that.
I love my yoruba accent, in fact, i am thinking of developing it and making it thicker. Thank goodness i am not a self loather like you.

SportsRe: 'I Was Not Good Enough For Green Eagles' - John Fash by davidif: 9:43pm On Jul 02, 2009
Fashanu explained that it was not possible for him to break into the team because the Eagles then had fantastic players in Late Mudashiru Babatunde Lawal, Segun Odegbami
Na lie, he is just being modest, if muda lawal or Odegbami were that good, how come they couldn't make it to a top league in Europe? Fashanu just didn't want to play for naija because he is british at heart having grown up there.

And that was how I became the first black player to put on the white jersey to represent England
By the way, he was not the first black player to play for England.

“I must tell you that I was not good enough for the Green Eagles. When I was invited to the national team under Brazilian Otto Gloria, I met the likes of late Muda Lawal, Segun Odegbami, Henry Nwosu and I must tell you these were fantastic players. They could dribble and do wonderful things with the ball.

The style of play here was different from what I was used to back home in England. These were players with sublime skills. Mudal Lawal could dribble past three opponents at a time. It was a game of skills where the ball was played on the ground unlike where I was coming from. In England, it was aerial assault and physical challenge and that was where I excelled,” he said.
Being a great dribbler does not make you a great player, it just means that you have some tricks in the bag or that you are circus entertainer because Okocha was a great dribbler does not mean that he was more effective than Ballack, Lampard or Steven Gerrard. So there is a biiiiiiiiiiiiig difference between been able to dribble and being an effective player.
On the other hand, maybe that is why Stefan Ekoku didn't play well for Nigeria.
EducationRe: Examination:: True Test Of Knowledge? by davidif: 9:18pm On Jul 02, 2009
Nope, it's just used in Nigeria because it's clearcut and easy to analyse.
The U.M.E is a big flop . . . a snapshot is not what w need to get people into Uni.
And we're here wondering why graduates are half baked
Exams only test your ability to pass exams . . . c'est fini.

My friend once said that if examination is not a true test of knowledge then give us something else. The last time i checked, nobody has seemed to discover one.

yes o omoge. some just over do it to fit in. you'll hear of one emeka person (jjc) that just landed in yankee and within 1 month, he has changed his name to micky or mekhi and starts speaking yeye english like gerrout, mothafu$ka, shit men, wharabout, yels etc. pitiful. no be by force o. naija peeps to dey overmurder english
Omo, you hit the message right on the head.

can't stand Nigerians or other Africans that fake American accents. I can understand when you kind of tweek it when your speaking to an America, but not when you try to convince another Nigerian that that's your "normal" relaxed accent. I also can't stand it when full grown Nigerians come to America and return back home with an "American" accent and refuse to drop it because "that is how they naturally speak". when i was in Nigeria, this one guy just came back from da States and all the locals were just amused by his "amazing" American accent. Me and my cousin were so embarrassed for him but it seemed the other folks liked it IMO, i don't think it's easy for a full grown foreigner or Nigerian to live in America and then acquire a completely American accent. It may become lighter than before, but it aint going no where. IMO, i think Nigerians sounder funny when they try to talk in American accent. They be killing it with the R's. lol! they sound better (MUCH BETTER) or at least less funny with their regular accent.

I WON'T BE HAPPY WITH THE CONSTITION REVIEW IF IT FAILS TO COME OUT WITH A LAW THAT WILL MANDATE EVERY POLITICIAN, FRAUDULENTLY ELECTED BUT LEGALLY BOOTED OUT OF OFFICE, TO REFUND ALL THE MONIES AND RESOURCES HE HAS EVER USED IN THE OFFICE: THE SALARIES, ALLOWANCES BOTH TO HIM OR ENTITLLED TO HIS OFFICE. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TO ENSURE THAT ALL THE POLITICAL ROGUES WILL THINK TWISE BEFORE EMBARKING ON THEIR CRIMINALITIES. I AM CONVIENCED THAT ALL THOSE THAT "WORKED" WITH HIM IN THIS EKITI SAGA ARE READY PACKING THEIR BAGS. EKITI GOVT SHOULD NOT TOURCH ANY MONEY IT CANNOT BE ACCOUTABLE TO BECAUSE THE EAGLE EYES OF THE EFCC ARE WATCHING. THERE IS NO HIDDING PLACE UNDER THE SUN.
I AM OF THE HOPE THAT IF THE JUDICIARY IS GIVEN WHAT THEY NEED, THERE IS A RARE OF POLITICAL HOPE IN THE NEAREST FUTURE. SO LET US ALWAYS SUPPORT ALL THE ANTI-CORRUPTION CAMPAIGN INSPITE OF WHOSE OX IS GORED. OUR AGF SHOULD BE INFORMED!
THANKS FOR NOW.

CultureRe: Can you translate this Colours In Your Language? by davidif(op): 7:14am On Jul 01, 2009
White = Ocha
Black = Ojii
Red = Uhie (Uhie Uhie)
Blue = Uri
Green = Ndu Ndu
Brown = Anwuanwu
Yellow = Edo Edo
Pink = ?? Hybrid color. . . uhie uhie still, I guess. So, instead of icha uhie uhie, it would be, ichatu uhie uhie, to express a "dab" of red.
Amazing.

In Kalabari

Black = Krukru

Blue = bloblo or so toru

Yellow = epe

White = Pina

Green = Inyatoru
This is also cool, i didn't know that Nigerian languages had names for yellow or green.
CultureRe: Can you translate this Colours In Your Language? by davidif(op): 7:11am On Jul 01, 2009
Yoruba language doesn't have specific name for the colours you mentioned but we often times associate them to things.
example blue is the colour of the sky and it's oftentimes called awo sanmo(colour of the sky), green is the colour osfand it's oftentimes called awo ewe(colour of leave)
@IFELEKE
Exactly, i think we just use metaphors: we compare them to things for example in order to describe that your cloth is green, you can say "aso e fe jo moto yen (assuming the car one is refering to is green in color).

By the way davidf when are you coming back to teach us some German language
Ich bin ein Nigeria, i must confess i fell for that one, u got me writting the whole page
@waladis,

HA HA HA HA HA HA.

Green (Awo ewe/ leaf color), i heard that lots of time on Yoruba news, but the rest i don't know.
My father said that brown was awo paali, but i don't know, he also gave me the translation for the following;

buluu- blue
awo bi osan- orange
yelo- yellow
popu- purple
buraun- brown
pinnki- pink

But i told him that this were not original words but just twisting English words by using an accent like calling the color blue, buluu.

I am yoruba and we only have three words for different languages: white (funfun), black (dudu), red (pupa) but my teacher wants to find out what we call blue, green, yellow, brown, and pink.

For example, how do you say these sentences in your language?

Yesterday, i saw a beautiful flower. It was (pink/purple/yellow) ______________

Yesterday, i bought a new blanket. It was (brown/green/pink/purple/red) ________________

Yesterday, i bought a new dress. It was (brown/green/pink/purple/blue) _________________

Foreign AffairsRe: Micheal Jackson: No Official Statement From Obama; Why? by davidif: 10:11pm On Jun 27, 2009
whats the fuzz about wacko jacko? after all legendary actress farrah fawcett the former star of charlie's angels died the same day with MJ after battling with anal cancer since 2006 she was 62 yrs old. how come nobody is talking about her?
RICHIE BOI
Its because she was not a global icon like Michael Jackson. She was made popular because of a tv series (Charlies Angels) and that famous poster of hers and that's it. Sorry to say this, but MJ's star power was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay much bigger than Farrah Fawcett.
