No profession has a monopoly on leadership. There is no certain proffessional qualifications for being a good leader. Good leaders come from all works of life. FDR was never a combat soldier, Ronald Reagan was an actor who just played pretend soldier in the movies but was never in real life. This two guys were America's greatest presidents of the last century. Good leaders come from all proffessions: businessmen, lawyers, teachers, carpenters, soldiers, medical doctors.
The most important features in leadership are;

1) INTEGRITY (self explanatory)
2) Wisdom to select the best people to do the job and not hiring his fellow tribesmen, friends or party members.
3) Vision and sense of direction of where he wants to lead the country to.

By the way, a leader does not even need a bachelors degree, he can hire people with Ph.D's to do certain tasks for him. If education were to be a top priority then Oxford educated Mugabe would be the greatest president ever.
