Hello all.
I was having a conversation with a friend who recently gave birth, and she was narrating her ordeal during antenatal classes recently.
the nurses there told the mothers present that they would not be attended to, until they had contributed money for 'malt'. The mother's started protesting; the nurses abandoned them. After waiting a while, they decided to contribute money.
the most appalling part was, the nurses said that they wouldn't take less than #100.
mothers who didn't have were sent home; meaning no vaccines for their children that day.
This happened at Badagry general hospital.
I'm surprised because my mum has been a nurse for 25 years (although a psychiatrist), even she was annoyed when she heard it.
Do nurses take bribe too, or is this peculiar?

In Lagos like many other states (if not all) in Nigeria, the State govt collects revenue and distributed then to the local govt which is an incredibly pathetic way of running things. The local govt, cities or communities should raise revenue by themselves through local property taxes and use it to take care of there needs. This is how things work in developed climes. If you own land or house (not when you are renting o), you pay a certain tax to the local govt be it city or municipal and this is used to provide schools, policing and emergency services. That is how things should be in Nigeria.

The problem with a lot of Nigerians is that they they think very one dimensionally and narrowly. They don't think in a very broad and in-depth manner but in a very shallow manner.
A lot of This guys cheering for the disintegration of the nation do not understand the 3rd and 4th order of consequences of the unravelling of a nation of over 250 ethnic groups. The consequences are just downright chilling. Its like opening a Pandoras box that will generate a whole host of other complicated problems and when those problems are unleashed there is almost no way to put the genie back in the bottle. That's why one always has to be careful of the law of unintended consequences because the effects can be so devastating and far reaching.

If you truly want to find out what could happen in Nigeria go read up on what happened to Yugoslavia in the 90's or to Lebanon in the 80's or what's going on te Congo today.
