You are still deceiving yourself
With this comment I now know you are dumb
Have Nigeria ever witnesse democracy?
Igbo have been practicing democracy with their republican system
Why did the Britain destroy it?
If not for exploitation and slavery
They modified and called democracy
You are the dumb and silly one fooling yourself here. What can be more democratic than a new country having its constitution drafted by an assembly 100% composed of freely elected representatives from all federal constituencies who all attended the London Constitutional Conference? Go and watch the proceedings of that conference on YouTube and see for yourself that there was no soldier, be it from Britain or Nigeria in attendance. It was all purely done by those elected representatives acting on the sovereignty of the people back home. The US is a strong example of democracy today because its own Independence Constitution too was drafted by the American people through the representatives they all duly elected to Philadelphia.
In the philosophy of democracy the only universally acceptable way to make a constitution is by the people directly or through the representatives they freely elected by themselves. If Nigeria was able to fulfill this condition in drafting the independence constitution, then only a crass ignoramus and incorrigible idiot would keep blindly insisting that Nigeria never practised democracy.
The same Britain you have been falsely accusing of imposing a constitution on Nigeria by virtue of colonization also colonized America which we all know to be the most perfect democracy in the world today as US shook off British vestiges later and made an American peoples constitution for themselves. Same with Canada, India and even South Africa. We did same in Nigeria too and later took it a step further by making a complete breakaway from the British vestiges by way of derecognizing the Queen of England in the 1963 Ammendment. But unlike USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, etc, we were unfortunate to have one half baked education army GOC who abused his office to misadventure into politics and brazenly do away with that peoples sovereign constitution only to replace it with his tribe's own hidden agenda ladden constitution. So we never operated a British imposed constitution as your likes would claim in order to exonerate Ironsi from the mess Nigeria has become on account of his idiotic subversion of the independence constitution. If anything, what we are suffering in Nigeria today is Ironsi imposed constitution. Colonization doesn't automatically translate to imposition of imperialistic constitution. Ironsi was the imperialist who imposed on us a constitution alien to our collective identity and aspirations.

Your Oba is under his local government chairman.

If your Oba is that powerful then why is Edo State not developed
Go and read the Edo State Laws on traditional institutions within the state. There you will see that even the state governor doesn't have any actual authority over the Oba. In fact the Oba is not appointed by the governor and no governor can remove him talkless of his position having anything to do with an LGA chairman. Have you ever wondered why despite the fact that many Obas in the past and present openly defy and antagonize some governors or milads like Onyearegbulem, Lucky Igbinedion and lately Obaseki, none of these governors ever made any attempt to dethrone him? The truth is simply that the office of Edo State Governor has no power in the Edo State Chiefs Laws to dethrone the Oba, and no such amendment will ever be made to that Law. Why do you think Wike who is known to openly insult Rivers State traditional rulers became very humble and full of reverence before the Oba the day he visited the Palace in Benin?

On the issue of development, it is now an established principle in Edo State that if a candidate whom the Oba doesn't support wins governorship election, it always results to misgovernance and retrogression and vice versa. This holds true for Lucky Igbinedion, Oshiomhole and Obaseki. So when Edo voters listen to the Oba, they get development and if they do otherwise they suffer the reverse.

We began with democracy in 1960 and sustained it until 1966 when Ironsi introduced military rule and it was thereafter everything fell apart into the mess Nigeria has become. If Ironsi never introduced militarism, Nigeria would have by now been rubbing shoulders with USA, UK, Germany, Canada, China, etc in terms of development and perfect system of government.

I can understand the game plan of PDP. They are very desperate to take over power from APC. From every indication, APC is going South, PDP will go north. And with that, it is game over for APC because PDP will defeat them base on the hand writings on the wall.

Yes, the Igbos have stuck with the PDP since inception. They have remained loyal to PDP much more than any tribe or region. If they demand the ticket as a compensation for their loyalty, they are not demanding too much at all. But at THIS point in time, if PDP decides to field an Igbo man now just to please the igbos, they will lose based on obvious political calculations.

The best bet for PDP and the easiest route for an Igbo man to be President is to allow someone like Atiku to pick the ticket while an Igbo man will serve as his VIce. Upon completion of his 8 years tenure, his vice, an Igbo man can then aspire to be President.

The most important thing is to snatch power from APC by all means possible now. My submission
Have you ever wondered why Obasanjo didn't like the idea of Atiku his vice succeeding him, why Turai and Yaradua family weren't comfortable with the idea of Jonathan succeeding Yaradua even when it had become an open secrete that Yaradua was dead, and why certain cabal in the North who are not talking about Osinbajo succeeding Buhari as an alternative to the Tinubu whom they are scheming against? Have you also wondered why since 1999, governors generally resist being succeeded by their deputies?

Where were you when APC swept Bayelsa clean in the last guber election there? PDP victory in the last Edo election was by a slight margin owing to Iyamu's complacency. ‘CAPTAIN O. OJI - Infantry

Captain Oji, Mons Officer Cadet School trained, one of the original three January conspirators, took part in the initially unsuccessful effort to arrest Brigadier Maimalari, killing a Lance Corporal of his guard in the process. Some sources claim that it was Oji that Okafor sent to accost General Ironsi but that Oji did not find him at home - an oddly timed assignment considering that Oji spent so much time at Maimalari's house at the outset. Anyhow, Oji later went to Ikeja Barracks for reconnaisance before the mutiny collapsed. It may have been Oji's group Gowon was referring to when he complained to Madiebo that he was being shadowed at Ikeja.

Oji was arrested by Ironsi and detained in the East. He too was released by Ojukwu in 1967. One account says he died in action during the civil war in 1968. Another claims he survived the war.‘

Ok Capt Oji who failed to arrest Gen Ironsi at his house earlier had a fantastic 2nd opportunity to kill Ironsi but failed to do so but the same Capt Oji had no Problem killing Gen Maimailari’s guard Commander earlier

Do you agree
See how you calmly use hard facts and documentary references to demolish the revisionist tales they present with only insults and abusive language as proof.
Only the empty in terms of intellect and facts are known to enter an intellectual debate with emotions and insults as cover up for their emptiness, yet when you get into the gutter of abuse with them just to prove that they have no such monopoly, they begin to cowardly call on the mods who themselves just ban without checking very well who actually started the insults. Only God will help the mods of this platform. But I know that one day a competitor group will spring up in which the mods will be more rational and just. That day Nairaland will face existential threat if the mods continue with this blatant partiality.

I was expecting you to point out where Igbo collectively agreed to one Nigeria
Rather you were busy ranting
Mentioning
British appointed puppets
What stop balewa the first prime minister from
Recognizing Referendum clause in Nigeria constitution
OH they are all puppet working for Britain
You want azikiwe the British puppet to go contrary to their British royal company called Nigeria with Secessioniay clause
Or was it Igbo that told zik to reject the Secession clause?
Again Nigeria under azikiwe is not yet a republic until 1963 and still take order from Britain so channel your blame appropriately
Again your myopic reasoning didn't tell you that Nigeria are no longer using azikiwe Era constitution
Nigeria have use like 3 or more different constitution recently they now use concocted 1999 military constitution
Had it been Britain allow azikiwe then to input such Clause it would have still be irrelevant
Now what is stopping the north from inputting Secessionist clause in Nigeria constitution
Are they also azikiwe and Igbo?
If you truly knew the meaning of democracy you wouldn't be maintaining this unintelligent line of arguement. Azikiwe never pursued one-Nigeria as an individual project but in representative capacity of the Igbos who voted him to the federal parliament to represent them. Was it the British that appointed Azikiwe into that federal parliament in which he fought against secession clause motions by Awolowo, Enahoro, Ahmadu Bello and even Tafawa Balewa, or Zik voted himself there? Look the constitution back then made recall process very easy hence if Igbos found Zik's activities in the federal parliament unrepresentative of their interest, they would have moved a motion to recall him. If you don't recall a representative of yours in a democratic assembly then you implicitly agree that he is still doing your bidding. That is how democracy works and indegenous
participation in democracy started in Nigeria in 1922 which was at least 22 years before Zik began to use his representative office on behalf of the Igbo nation to thwart all pro-secession motions.
The British didn't appoint any puppets anywhere. That Nnamdi Kanu's line is already stale and proven to be a face-saving revisionism. The 1959 elections ended in a stalemate and Azikiwe, in pursuit of Igbo interest, decided to reject the proposed all-South alliance (which would have made him prime minister) in preference for the NPC-NCNC master-slave coalition which made him a relatively powerless Governor General. In his own words and on behalf of Igbos he was representing, "I made that choice because an alliance cutting across North and South was better for "national unity" and the sustenance of Nigeria". It is not recorded anywhere in the annals of history that the British forced him to reject the proposed all-South alliance that would have made him prime minister. So cut this British involvement theory. It is has over time become a hard sell.
If you expect that Tafawa Balewa could have recognized secession clause while he was prime minister, then where do you place the principle of separation of powers? How possible is it for the head of the executive arm of a democratic government to just amend a sovereign people's constitution without first sending it to the legislature in the form of a bill? What are you even saying? Cannonization of secession clause referendum or any other constitutional amendment are all duties of the legislature and never that of the executive. So your rhetorical question on why Tafawa Balewa couldn't recognize secession clause only shows you don't know the guiding principles of democracy. Wasn't it in the legislative parliament that all the motions for and arguements against secession clause played out between Awolowo, Azikiwe, Enahoro, Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa all before Independence? So why are you expecting it to shift to the executive post independence when we even became officially a democratic society guided by the principle of separation of powers? If Igbos sincerely didn't support Azikiwe in his fight against secession clause, then why didn't the Igbo members of the post independence federal parliament move the motion afresh for secession clause knowing fully well that the British was gone and the other tribes whose leading lights had been moving the motion were still favourably disposed to it?
Again, were you expecting secession clause to have made it into any of the constitutions that came after Independence Constitution knowing fully well that they were all documents midwifed by the military? If it was so easy to imput secession clause into a military-midwifed constitution, then why didn't Ojukwu himself propose such in Aburi Accord at a time he was even contemplating secession?

Let me cure you of your stupidity
Igbo are the only people that oppose British rule in Nigeria
Even till amalgamation we were still fighting British in ekumeku war that Britain took a Clown born in zungeru northern nigeria and made him a ceremonial president while we are still fighting the British says it all
There is no where the British said Igbo agreed to one Nigeria
The best way is to conduct refrendum
Let me cure you of your moronic plague and reeking idiocy.
After the forced Amalgamation, Ahmadu Bello, speaking on Behalf of the defunct Northern protectorate, described the Amalgamation as The Mistake of 1914 and demanded that Nigeria be de-amalgamated else it would become a theatre of daily bloodshed in the nearest future. The current happenings vindicate him.

Speaking on behalf of the Yorubas, Awolowo described Nigeria as A mere geographical expression not fit to be called a country let alone a nation as there are no Nigerians in the same sense as there are Germans, French, Britons, etc, and added that an Oodua nation would serve Yorubas better than the British fraud called Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of Western minorities, Anthony Enahoro proposed that a secession clause be included in the future constitution so that by the time the all powerful Britain will have left Nigeria, the forced amalgamation would be easily reversed, then the country would quietly and bloodlessly split and everyone would go his way peacefully
Speaking on behalf of the North, Tafawa Balewa, in a public speech, declared that Nigeria was a British experiment and Nigerian Unity a British intention in which the so-called Nigerian people themselves reposed no faith, and that Northerners regard as invaders the Southerners, mostly Igbos, who were trooping daily to the North for for livelihood

But speaking as the duly elected president of Igbo State Union (ISU) hence on behalf of and with approval of all Igbos generally, Azikiwe declared that The unity of Nigeria is perpetual and non-negotiable, and that the Igbo nation was prepared to sacrifice anything to preserve Nigeria till the end of age. For that utterance he received unending applause from the Igbo nation which from then on began to adjudge him a nationalist while labelling Ahmadu Bello, Awolowo, Anthony Enahoro and Tafawa Balewa as ethnic bigots, divisive agents and clannish sectionalists.
Azikiwe would, in the pursuit of his perpetual and non-negotiable Nigeria unity, go ahead and seek to govern a region where he was a complete alien and rather than Igbos, who according to you didn't want Nigeria, to denounce him and rejoice when his bid to govern the wesr failed, they mourned that failure and even began to accuse Yorubas of being tribalistic, clannish, wicked, demonic and untrustworthy for the 'crime' of fending off an intruder who was pursuing the reinforcement of the perpetuity and non-negotiability of the fraudulently amalgamated Nigeria. So much for a people who purportedly through a war resisted the British for their quest to establish Nigeria.
If you sincerely felt deep down in your minds that Zik was a Zungeru clown made ceremonial president by the British, then why do you keep wailing till today over his several failed plots to take over the West by hook or crook? Why didn't you all abandon Ojukwu the moment he made the same Zungeru clown the Biafran envoy .....a position equal to minister of foreign affairs? Then when Aguiyi Ironsi went to the extreme by breaking the barriers that kept Nigeria as four in one and also promulgated the infamous Anti-secession Decree which was billed to forestall the very secession referendum you now daily ask for, albeit hypocritically, you all applauded him. So what is all this self indicting trash you are littering NL with?
Keep rewriting history. But the good news is that you fool no one but yourself.

And mind you that Azikiwe invented one-Nigerianism when he was the national president of Igbo State Union (ISU) and also while he was in the federal parliament in representative capacity of Igbos and there is no shred of record anywhere that any group of Igbos moved any motion to impeach him as ISU president or recall him from the federal parliament... meaning that he actually was speaking the mind of Igbos in his propagation of one-Nigerianism. So trying to twist it now using Hope Uzodinma all because one-Nigerianism boomeranged on you Azikiwe's people is cowardice and sheer buffonrey.

Ahh...Awolowo is too smart for anyone to trust him with power cool not even the British. In fact, probably the smartest Afonja that ever lived. I must admit that with the benefit of hindsight, that anything the British hates is in the interest of Africans.
Obasanjo is a true servant of the north and the last of the Afonja that could be trusted since he is not clannish like a typical Afonja. Do you think that the rumor that he has Igbo father is true? Tinubu, Abiola, Awolowo are all clannish Afonjas like the typical Afonja. So Mr Tinubu can only dream... No sane northerner would sell him a bug. Not to factor in his crooked ways. Fulani may be corrupt, but I doubt they would back a corrupt non-Fulani like the bullion van lord.
Like I already edited above, it is all about positive or negative disposition to one-Nigerianism.
Abiola couldn't be said to be clannish but they denied him presidency because of his later day apathy to the fraudulent one-Nigerianism. His campaign in 1993 bears it out.
If Obasanjo's purported Igbo paternity imposed non-clannishness made the North trust him with power, why then didn't they in 1999 favour his PDP primaries rival Alex Ekweme who was even 100% Igbo blood and was loyal to Shagari as VP from 1976 to 1981....a trait which translated to non-clannishness? Tinubu has no record of clannishess either.
The only theory which consistently explains all instances of the North's resistance to southern presidency is disbelief in the fraudulent one-Nigerianism which feeds the North at the expense of the South.

Well... There are Afonja and there are Afonja... grin
Let's look at the differences. One Afonja is a Christian and his character as a loyal slave was obvious to his Fulani masters while the second Afonja is a Muslim and his Fulani masters are aware that he cannot be trusted knowing fully well the Taqquia principles of Islam which Buhari used in tricking him could be employed by him to shortchange them. The Fulani probably trust Christian Obasanjo than Tinubu Afonja. In fact, they view Afonjas muslims as highly unstable and unreliable. That is why despite all the assurances that Abiola gave them, they still dangled power before him but never gave him.
Your hypothesis is watered down by the fact that, at least as propounded by your likes, they also didn't trust Awolowo who was as well a Yoruba Christian like Obasanjo whom you claim they trusted.
Now if we are to take your theory for a truth regardless of the Awolowo angle, we would conclude that the coincidence of Fulanis trusting Obasanjo and him getting massive votes from the SE and SS all in 1999 means the SS and SE have the same political culture and political philosophy as the Fulanis. How do you see that?

Above all these, they trusted Obasanjo because he was the only Southerner who had been proven to be religiously committed to the fraudulent one-Nigerianism by which they unduly reap the resources of the South. Obasanjo again reiterated this commitment to the fraudulent one-Nigeria in his very recent letter to Edwin Clark. They recently were rooting for GEJ over Tinubu because GEJ is obviously a one-Nigerianist compared with Tinubu.
They hated Awolowo because he never left anyone guessing his apathy to the fraudulent one-Nigerianism. Likewise Abiola in his later days. So it has nothing to do with religion as you would want to claim.

These people are just plain ignorant. They say Ironsi removed Regionalism with one single decree in the 6 months he was in office. But Gowon was there for 9 years and could not use decree to return the so called Regionalism.

Gowon made Ironsi's Decree 34 look like childs play. Decree 34 was never a problem, the problem was that Ironsi was an Igbo man. Had Ironsi been a Northerner, nobody would have said anything, he would even still be alive today

With one single decree (Decree 14), Gowon destroyed Nigeria for good. From 4 Regions that had resource control under Ironsi, we went to 12 unitary states that had no power to control their resources. Resource control is the piller of true federalism because it is when you control your resources that you are your own master. When the federal government controls the resources, they become the master, and the Regions or states become mere 'units', or unitary rule. The fact that Ironsi never touched resource control and fiscal federalism means that nobody will ever be able to win the argument that he removed true federalism. He didnt even remove Regionalism as the 4 Regions were there until his death

Subsequent Military rulers from the North continued the state creation started by Gowon and today we have 36 states, all created by the military! Most of those states are not even viable

Even Ironsi would have been shocked at what those who came after him did to Nigeria. The same people who complained about decree 34. Not even Ironsi would have believed that Nigeria can go from 4 Regions to 36 states

Gowons decree 14 was a well calculated plan to make the North masters of Nigeria. The decree gave the Northern Region half the 12 states created, and guaranteed them political and economic control of Nigeria with the removal of resource control.

It is those who want to divert attention from all the evil machinations of Northern military rulers, starting with Gowon, that still talk about Ironsi and decree 34
The two questions you have always dodged are:

1. Did Gowon take any oath of office to protect and defend any constitution unlike Ironsi who took such oath but failed to fulfill it when the need arose?

2. Why should we blame Awolowo alone for the prevalence of tribalistic politics in Nigeria now on the assumption that he introduced it but have to blame the structural denaturation of Nigeria not on Ironsi who introduced it but on others who came after him and purportedly did worse in that regard?

I will begin to take you seriously the day you satisfactorily answer these two questions.

I dey tell you. A people who could tie an elderly man to a tree and torture him with naked flame just for the "offence" of holding a contrary political view to theirs. A people who cut a man's dick and sat him on bare ground making him declare for Biafra under duress. They don't believe in using sound arguement to win people to their side. It is insults and name calling always. See how they were first to use abusive language on this thread. Very uncivilized and savage people. Disgusting!

Balewa rejected it because it didnt favour the north and he ordered the disputed recount that the south rejected in 1963. Stop trying to twist this simple fact. It's as if lying is a reflex for you
"Jewish" emotional outburst in the face of superior reason. I will only be taunting you from now on because all doubts in me are now cleared that you are not really different from your brothers. I initially thought I was engaging someone who believes in critical thinking premised on logic and facts.
How are you Miss. Jew?

Verbose, worthless nonsense
Ahahahahahahahahahaha............... As if I expected anything better as response.
You see why I said you have no use for critical thinking? And people who are so intellectually lazy want to have us believe that their proposed Biafra Republic will be a paradise of scientific and technologcal innovations novel among African countries as if science and technology are products of emotional outbursts rather than careful study and critical analysis of nature and scientific literature. So much for a "superior" race of Jewish ancestry.
If anything Jews are the most critical thinkers in the world and have no use for emotionalism. But our Jews here are born with extreme emotions and little tolerance for critical thinking. I pity any SS state that mistakenly joins that ill-fated Biafra. It will be a jungle where might will rule in place of reason. It will simply be terrible there.

Pure rubbish that you fabricate to feel good grin What was the name of the southerner? You need deliverance from spirit of lying grin

Balewa/Sardauna rejected the first results cool

"The refusal of the government to accept population census of 1962 prompted the 1963 population census which critics claimed were arrived at by negotiation rather than enumeration"

You have now eaten your vomit that the first post independence census was done in 1961. See yourself? And you were confidently arguing before and even using abusive language to defend your claim of it being held in 1961. What a shame! You are indeed shameless!

So you never heard that the final results of a census can only come after all the disputes and court cases about it have been addressed? In the 2006 census you never heard Lagos State go to court over the abandonment of some enumeration units, won in court and INEC ordered to go and recount those enumeration units and add them to the preliminary results? What Balewa and Ahmadu Bello rejected were preliminary results. The final results that came after verification put the North ahead of the South and Michael Okpara and other Southerns rejected it and Balewa still allowed for a cancellation and then ordered a rerun in 1963. You are an ignoramus proud of your bold ignorance.

So I should discount Wale Ademoyega's personal account for this your beer parlour theory. E be like say na monkey shit wey you smoke walahi grin grin grin grin grin grin
So Ademoyega is not human and hence above error or even deliberate falsification? I can't believe that this kind of person I met on NL today still exist in this life till date.

Let me lecture you a bit on why you don't have to swallow like Akpu everything you read in a book narration an event even if written by direct participants.
You may again complain that I am writing epistles but it is worth it. Just take your time and read it patiently and you will get my drift.

For example; Ojukwu wrote in his "Because I am involved" that it was he who ordered and effected Awolowo's release from jail in order that he would work with or at least for Biafra as they allegedly agreed to.
We all know Ojukwu was actually involved in all those events of that period. No doubt about that at all. But putting on your thinking cap you would realize that Ojukwu lied to attract sympathy especially from people like you who aren't really cerebral enough to easily pick holes in claims. Now here are the holes in that claim.

1. Awolowo was released on the 2nd of August 1966 from Calabar prison. As at that day, Aburi meeting had not even been held talkless of Gowon reneging on the agreement which made Ojukwu later declare Biafra. Aburi Accord was held on January 4 and 5, 1967, and it was afterwards that the agreement broke down on getting back to Nigeria and the idea of secession now began to cross Ojukwu's mind. So how was it possible that Ojukwu was already reaching agreements with Awolowo on Biafra in August 2 the previous year i.e. at least four months before secession idea first occured to him?

2. Aguiyi Ironsi was dethroned and killed on July 29 and Gowon took over that day. Then Ojukwu began to insist on Ogundipe and expressed the premonition, albeit hypocritically, that the seed for disregard of seniority had been sown. This continued for days far past August 2 date of Awolowo's release which was just Gowon's third day in office. So how could Ojukwu who was still interested in having Nigeria get it right have been negotiating with Awolowo on secession from Nigeria at that same time?

3. The order that released Awolowo from Calabar prison in the Eastern Region where Ojukwu was Governor also release the likes of Enahoro, Alvan Ikoku and many other AG stalwarts who were jailed in Western and Northern Regions prisons. Now, who between Ojukwu the Eastern Region Governor and Gowon the military head of state had the power to give an order that would be effected in prisons in all regions simultaneously? You be the judge no if Ojukwu said the truth or lied despite being directly involved in those events.

Then in his "Why we Struck" Wale Ademoyega wrote that he and his colleagues had started planning the coup from as far back as mid-1961. But in another chapter he writes that the coup was planned to put a check on the unlawfulness being perpetrated in the Western Region.
Now ask yourself how a coup plot hatched in 1961 could have been because of the Western Region crises that started later in 1962. Did the coupists have the power to foretell the future?
So you see why you shouldn't rely entirely on the author of a narration even if he was a direct participant in the events he tries to narrate in his book.
Only an intellectually deficient person swallows everything in a book just because the author was himself involved.

You must be very new here if you think "Deadlytruth" is Yoruba !
What do you expect from a people who call the Joe Igbokwe they know in real life a Yoruba person just because he doesn't buy their victim card playing narratives? Even their own Rochas became OkoroHausa because he differed from their mainstream thinking. To them SS people are so stupid that they can't and shouldn't subject their narratives to logical scrutiny and facts-based confirmation but just swallow them like fools.

Where in this gbana inspired gibberish is the 1961 census mentioned? Abi you no sabi read
So after seeing it clearly stated that the last census before independence was done in 1952 and knowing fully well that censuses were being done at 10 year intervals up till 1992 in Nigeria, you still attach 1961 date to that first post independence census? Can't you see that you really don't have a functional brain at all?
And are you telling me that you couldn't read and understand the part of the report I extracted out which lays it bare that the census ended with a verification exercise which final outcome put the North comfortably ahead of the South? The school fees paid for your education would have been put to better use if it had simply been thrown into the sea. What an irritating way to live in denial!

Professor of ignorance, here it is for you:

Page 16:

In May 1962, as the AG crisis was reaching its peak, the nation prepared for its first census as an independent country. The last census, which had been conducted in 1952-53 under the auspices of the British, had been the basis for the distribution of parliamentary seats prior to the 1959 election.
Northern power, and the NPC’s dominance, largely resulted from this census. Consequently, when a new census became due in 1962, implications for the ethno-regional balance-of-power inevitably
shaped its meaning.

Page 17: discovering” an extra 8.5 million northerners
. This brought the north’s population to a new total
of 31 million, up from the 22.5 million in the initial count – comfortably large enough to maintain its
preponderant advantage.
The NCNC led the south in completely rejecting the results of the
verification exercise. The governing alliance broke down as the NCNC pushed for the release of the
original census result, while the NPC backed the authenticity of the verification checks. Given this
impasse, the 1962 results were cancelled and a fresh census was announced for the second half of
1963.
