Is it compulsory to opt for genetic testing? We had our 1st antenatal visit a few days ago and was asked to come today for our 1st scan out of two that we will be having during this pregnancy journey.

We got there and they spent so much time and having done all measurements particularly, around the neck, they assured us that the fetus is growing well and from the scan, there is no symptom or fear of "down syndrome" or "spina bifida" however, we could do blood work (genetic testing) to check madam's hormonal level.

For our experience mothers, do you think one need go do the test?

The scan you had today was the nuchal translucency scan. And you should have four scans typically during pregnancy, the confirmation scan between 6-8 weeks , nuchal translucency between weeks 11-14, anomaly scan 18-21 and growth scan 28-32. But I always have more scans
The screening you’re talking about is the NIPT, if you can afford it then you should go for it, usually my OB recommends it and especially for women of advanced maternal age 35 years and above or if there’s any known genetic diseases in either of both parents family line, NIPT also tells the gender early. I have a friend who does it in all her pregnancies just to rule out anything.
If you can afford it kindly go for it. It’s usually between 8-12 weeks it can be done if I’m not mistaken.

One guy on the visit visa thread spoke about people who visited the Uk renewing their us visas , I think this was sometime in November or December. Because I remember telling him what ties do they have to the Uk and I think their chances will not be as good as applying from Nigeria, he mentioned about getting earlier dates there or something I can’t remember the exact details.

I don’t know about UK 100%, but I have heard of people who applied for a U.S visa from there on a visit visa, however that was some years back Sha, so things might have changed.

I know personally of Canada, cos I applied there before. My sister just got her visa in an African country with no permanent residency. And I know people go to neighboring African countries to apply due to the lack of dates in naija. Like I said, it depends on the post/country. Each post makes their own rules ans they fit.

I know two students who applied from the Uk and were granted.

I think the duration SHL for the test was too long. If everybody took the test in like 1 to 2 days, the question would not have leaked.

I agree, 3-5 days max max would have been ideal.

How is it too much everyone has a camera phone it doesn’t have to any special camera, you don’t have an idea on how proctored exams go, your second camera can be a mobile phone with WiFi on and on flight mode to avoid mobile calls. All my proctored exams during and the early post Covid era outside Nigeria went that way. Laptop for the exam itself as one camera and a phone well positioned on a phone stand behind you on a higher surface as second camera.
Before exam begins the proctor sends you a link to link your other device and gets a 360 view of the room but with a camera in front and behind that’s a 360 view.
Unknown please don’t start this night with your assessment centre stories and leaks.

I'm sure Workforce and Dragnet cannot stand where SHL stands. The problem wasn't with SHL but how the test was proctored. With the test done using BYOD, candidates computers should have been inspected and locked down. There should have been two cameras focused on the candidate

I completely agree the issue was with the proctoring, if it was well proctored these leaks wouldn’t have occurred, also the 3 week timeframe was too long except they had other plans for making it that long.

Thanks so much ma,I am really grateful ma.I went for second opinion in another lab and the weight measured 2.61kg.The first measured anterior placenta while the second opinion measures posterior placenta though I did the first one in my hospital (clinic)the second one in the lab.I am speechless don't even know what to do.Just that the second said my amniotic fluid can only sustain me for two weeks cus it's a bit low.I want natural ways to boost my amniotic fluid and I need suggestions

The disparity in the opinions expressed is a lot, if you can afford it kindly seek a third opinion to put you at ease but I’m comfortable with and also hoping the second weight is the real weight. If you live around Surulere or it’s axis you should get an opinion from prisms, they’re reliable but the wait time is horrible.
I don’t think anything can be done regarding the amniotic fluid. Thankfully you’re 35 weeks already and the baby has a full survival chance even if born right now.
But I’ll be more comfortable seeking a third opinion because I’m wondering why first U/S didn’t reveal the low amniotic fluid levels, it’s confusing. Kindly read the link below it may be helpful

Don’t worry it’ll be okay, once the baby is out your blood pressure will stabilize. But question your obgyn further as to what his reasons are for wanting you to have the ELCS, I know Nigerian doctors don’t like being questioned they feel challenged once you question them but make sure you use your money finish don’t dash them anything . Ask him if it’s as a result of blood pressure not being stable, what options he can explore due to baby’s weight at the moment, if you can buy more time? Is there a nutritionist on board?
just question him even if we know he’s having the procedure at 36 weeks.
I once saw a doctor at the practice of the hospital I use that didn’t like being questioned, I made sure I frustrated him with my questions since he hated it.

This is a valid question most induction are given based on them wanting to keep experimenting their drugs or the convinience of the hospital having one less pregnant woman to worry about.
Under weight is not a reason for induction , you even want the baby to be full term so they can weigh more.

I suspect IUGR, if it’s IUGR it’s better to bring baby out.

Pregnancy induced hypertension

Did the doctor do the scan that rules out IUGR? The one that measures the blood flow from placenta to the baby and uses that very hot gel ? Pregnancy induced bp plus protein in urine causes iugr, preeclampsia, malfunction in liver and other medical conditions , so it’s better to have the ELCS. The only cure is delivery of the placenta because the placenta is compromised. There’s usually no medical treatment except taking bp meds, complete bed rest, change in diet. Don’t worry the baby will be okay and will gain weight after birth, I can completely understand your concerns, God will make everything right. Please don’t stress yourself or worry, it’ll only make matters worse.

Good Evening Mamas. Remember I came on Monday to say I was seeing blood and was advised to go the hospital. I was told to do a Transvaginal scan and the result was that uterine fibroids coexist with the pregnancy of 5wks 2 days(+/- 1week). I was told to repeat scan in 2 weeks and come back to the hospital and observe bed rest and was also prescribed duphaston. Meanwhile I am still bleeding. I wasn't having pain before but this afternoon I started experiencing pain in my tummy and waist. Please mamas I need your contribution and support. I am so confused and downcast. I don't want to loose my baby.

Tips from when I experienced this - You’ll need to observe very strict bed rest, abstain from certain activities, complete pelvic rest. Your duphaston will be increased dosage till bleeding subsides. I was also given progesterone pessaries to be inserted via the other place not where the bleeding occurs. But my doctor didn’t do all these until they confirmed a heart beat at 6 weeks 3 days.
Don’t worry it’ll be okay by Gods grace, I almost had a panic attack then too but every ultrasound I kept doing came back great.

It is not a national award so why should names be published in the dailies, who does that? So they can stalk and kidnap them when these upstream and even midstream O&G companies particularly hammer it to their staffs to keep a low profile due to the security situation in the country.

That’s why the test was proctored. The cheats will be fished out, although only one camera was required, proctored exams i took abroad required a second camera behind, but with one camera they should still be able to fish out the cheats.

Get a good breast pump within your budget, create space in your freezer, get bags to store the milk after expressing and date and label so you know how to pick up when you need, you can also get an organiser for it if you want to splurge. I use the spectra gold breast pump and it’s good. You can do formula and breast feeding there’s nothing wrong with it, gone are the days you’ll be labelled a bad mom for feeding formula to your baby

Yes please go and see your obgyn as soon as you can, they’ll ask questions like is the blood filing a pad up and other salient questions.
