I agree with you that some major economic infrastructure may be missing in Alaigbo, but we cannot continue to use this old copout as an excuse. I have seen my Igbo brothers build huge shopping malls in places that have less economic structures and resources than in Alaigbo. Additionally, the governors of the area have received nothing less than $100billion in allocation over the past few years, could they not have earmarked just 10% of that money for infrastructure. We can’t keep passing the buck to the federal government, after all the federal government pays the governments of the region $billion every year.
I mean, the feds have ignored their responsibilities of maintaining and constructing ‘federal’ roads in the region for years. Is that not enough signal to indicate that our state governments must tell the feds to get lost and do the needful themselves?
It is time that Igbo Investors partner with state governments and do the needful. BTW there is nothing deceitful about what you call ‘jargon’ such as one Nigeria. I declare to you today that, Insha Allah, our dear nation will be great once again. Regardless of what naysayers and awon olote believe.
PS. the motivating factor which made me open this thread is Love for the country and Ndigbo.
I am not a business man by any stretch of imagine. However, I have hung around business men in New York who do not think about Port Harcourt or any facility in eastern region when talking about shipping.
Even casual travelers would have more readily available tickets at minimal rates to Lagos or Abuja than Port Harcourt. To secure seat on Port Harcourt bound flights from the only two major air lines sectioned to touched down in eastern region of Nigeria without mid-trip transfers is so difficult and not suited for frequent flier precipitate business person.
It will amount to deliberate waste of time and bandwidth talking about lack of federal responsibilities of network of roads and other social amenities in the east. |

I do not know the motivating factors that spurred the author to write the piece. However, I tend to agree with the author on certain issues raised. If the author is genuinely real, he or she would have highlighted major economic infrastructures painfully missing in Alaigbo that leverage business activities in other regions. Ndigbo would have stayed home in the east if there were functional gateways out of Nigeria in the region. Since such economic amenities are pitifully lacking in east, Ndigbo had no options but to swim along the deceitful jargon such as One-Nigeria. |

I do not know if the deluded Killayut was around in 60’s Port Harcourt. If the jackass was not around, the simple act to perform would be to ask his or her parent the reason behind Ijo grabbing and fighting over abandon properties belonging to Ndigbo in Port Harcourt.
Considerable large of number of Ijo people never lived in a house built with cement and corrugated iron sheet. They lived on the boats mainly at the waterside. Of course, the main occupation of these people included fishing, wood-pecking, palmwine tapping and producing illicit gin (Akamere or Ogogoro).
I could not believe my eyes when I read a junk from Killayut how Ijo will cede few oil wells to Huasa in order to fight for them against Ndigbo. If this dude called Killayut is not dumb, he or she must be a nincompoop. It was not long ago that Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, Tiv and Yoruba were willing to sell entire Ijo people, including their boats to British and USSR, in order to stop Ndigbo. Even Bakassi was ceded to Cameroon. If the faith of Bakassi is not a good lesson to you, I guess you will die a mo.ron.
It is an established fact that no single ethnic group in Nigeria that can able to join Ndigbo in a war path and survive to tell tales of the battle. |

The only thing which will make them realize their place is disintegration of Nigeria and a serious dosage of territorial expansionism. |

I ask again, what is the meaning of Ama Onye Nabo in Igbo? then secondly, why is your story about boat people called 'jos' by the portuguese not wrong? We are all debating oral traditions and PhysicsQED is providing some documentary evidence to back up his claim. I would like you to provide proper evidence documentary and linguistic evidence showing that Ijaw people were called 'jos' which means 'porter' in Portuguese AND that Eastern Ijaw clans were all established by Igbos and somehow managed to get a language and culture different from the original founders of said villages (Bille, Krakrama, Nkoro, Abonnema, Tombia etc) whom they somehow managed to teach a new language and culture.
@Topic
The land in Gelegele is similer to the Palestine/Israeli conflict. Ijaws now live there and have done so at least for over a 100 years. You know that Nwanwa are treated with soft cloves. In some places, it is Igwe or Eze. Not every Di.ck or Tom gets his compound cleared, swept and cleaned by the entire community at a stipulated date or day. I have never written that “Jos” is porters and invariable Ijo. I had written that what become Ijo are combination of natives and porters European brought to the bight of Biafra. As PhysicsQED stated that languages change somewhat over time, the reference Portuguese gave to the people whom they met at Rio Real, thus, “people of the river” gave rise to “Jos” hence Ijo. |

PhysicsQED: I have read accounts that state clearly that the name Ijo derives from Ujo, a famous ancestor of the Ijaws and some of these accounts also acknowledge that this wasn't the original name for the Ijaws but that Oru was the original name. That the original name was Oru does not mean that the name Ijo, by simple elimination, derives from a European word.
Can someone (i.e. Dede) give a convincing linguistic argument showing that there is a particular reason that the Portuguese would use the word "Jos" or "Ijos" to refer to "boat people", "seamen", "sailors", "fishermen", "ferrymen", or "people of the river" or even "porter" "helper" "servant" or even anything similar? Portuguese dictionaries are accessible, and I can't see how there is a connection between the word "Ijo" or "Jos" and Portuguese words. Granted, languages change somewhat over time, but if the word "Jos" did not have a meaning in their language, I doubt they (the Portuguese) were the ones that made up the term.
As an example of one of the accounts I was referring to:
http://www.ijawfoundation.org/people.htm
^^^
Although there are several things stated in there that I disagree with completely (such as the false claim about a population of 14 million Ijaws and some of the historical claims), I have to say that I am more inclined to believe that the term Ijo is of African origin than Portuguese. I am not a linguistic by any stretch of imagination. However, I am of the school of thought which believes human understanding stresses experience. As you have rightfully stated that languages change somewhat over time hence there are Amachere for Amaikiri, Ama Onye anabo for Amayenagbo, Opu Obu for Opobo, Ubani for Bonny and Mmerenini for Mein. There is a word that sounds like “Jos” in the Portuguese’s reference to the “people of the river”. I am just interested in finding the true color of certain things and view attempts the time and certain dubious individuals have conspired to sit historical fact on its head. |

What is the meaning of Oru in Igbo?
Why should a slave in Igboland be called Oru?
Oru is the real name of the Ijaw people. It was the whiteman who called us Ijo, but our proper name is Oru. This must mean that slaves to Igbo must have been traditionally taken from the Oru people. In addition, a statement made by Abagworo struck me. He said that his people have a saying that "I am Oru, but I am not Ijaw". Are Abagworos people not colonised Igbos of original Oru extraction? Bear in mind Abagworo is from a riverine community in Imo State. Sometimes I admire your honesty even against the dead weight of current and treacherous revisionism. You accused me of whitewashing history yet you confirmed that Ijo was the making of Europeans, a fact I have stated amongst unwarranted abuse. The igbos might think they are more in number but honestly its not the number its the brain. only a fooll will think its the number which you are.
The igbos have always lived at our beck and call, they live at our command. though you may still be a kid but if you know any igbo living in Bonny or Opobo you can asked what happened 2007 from january till early 2009, taking june 15th 2008 into cognizance. Its not a boasting matter, you can asked call anyone or better still check online Tribune of that date. it is countless how many igbos lost their lives, those killed and drown in the see and those shot by our boys. the rest fled for their lives (why not stay and claim land. God punish una) , dont be deceive, forget numbers. I confidently tell you that is why Bonny have an Army Special Base up till today considering how many Army, Navy had there Heads CUT OFF, need less talking about the Police, you can as well get your facts from " CHANNEL CLINIC" as it was used as the official hospital then, send anyone to confirm this story as you claim to know Bonny, And the ironing of it all was that NON OF THESE BOYS WERE KILLED. as they were using powers beyond what the igbo man may ever dream of ( boats were seen empty but gun firing from it). I know all these as i was even appointed to "write up their agitations"
I have given you reason why we became close and accepted the igbos (during the slave era they were the people we sold.) this made us very close to the igbos as the slaves encouraged our kids to learn the igbo language so they can effectively carry out there household chores, another prove, Nollywood movie 1995 - 1998 Not very sure, you will see it and i will urge a anyone to confirm.
I have always been on top of all igbos that come my way because they always think they are smart but foolish and baffle how i beat their fish brains. All my University days in Uniport (College of Health Science, anyone in Uniport can confirm) I headed a group called G-14 in charge of making some reforms precisely for the Faculty in close affiliations with SUG then, I was the only ijaw, 2 ikwerres and the remaining igbos but they fall to my command. even as am not there anymore but i still decide who becomes the President of that faculty based on my formulated rules, these at the midst of the so-called wise igbos who are nothing but FOOLs, Confirm in Uniport, College of Health Sciences
some igbo idiots should learn to cut the coats to their size and wake up from their slumber and stop thinking they are wise.
Only fools thinks every language spoken originates from Igbo
every land originate from igbo, where then did igbo language came from? From Heaven? God packaged igbo language in DHL and send to your igbos. well as fools which you are, you will not see that the so called igbo language could have originated from someones' else's language, FAT FOOLLS.

PhysicsQED: Obiagu, I understand the angle you're trying to argue from, but that angle is flawed and it may be due to the fact that you're viewing all of this out of historical context.
Let me provide the historical context.
Gelegele was a large Bini village that was burned down to virtually nothing in February 10th 1897 by British soldiers under Captain O'Callaghan of the Royal Navy. It was a point of contact with Europeans for centuries and had received them with no problems or conflicts there. There was no Benin military presence there so it was captured and destroyed without a fight. When the British got to the town of Ughoton, they had an actual fight on their hands, but they took out Gelegele with no trouble. With the village of Gelegele destroyed, and the village itself being smaller to begin with than say, Ughoton, it made sense that there were fewer Binis that returned there.
After 1897, some Binis returned, but over time the Ijaws came to be predominant in the area.
That does NOT make Gelegele "Ijaw land" all of a sudden. The argument by the Binis that Gelegele is historical Benin land is backed by history.
The Ijaw never had a real traditional ruler there who was recognized by anyone else other than some Ijaws, although now they are trying to turn the community head of a settler population into a real traditional ruler.
It's this simple:
1. Binis found and occupy Gelegele for hundreds of years. Not only are they the founders, they are the majority inhabitants for centuries. 2. The British invade, and soldiers under Captain O'Callaghan burn Gelegele down to virtually nothing on February 10th, 1897. 3. Fewer Binis return to Gelegele after the defeat of Benin. 4. Some Ijaws populate the place for trade reasons. Later the place becomes most heavily inhabited by Ijaws. 5. Ijaws declare that the place is Ijaw land, and elevate a mere Ijaw community headman to "royalty" after oil is discovered there. A dispute with the Binis ensues. 6. A Midwestern government inquiry looks into the dispute and rules in the Binis' favor (1970), that the land is Edo land on which the Ijaws are tenants. 7. The case goes up to the level of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and the ruling is in the Binis' favor (1983). 8. The Ijaws continue their aggression over land that they have no real historical reason to be claiming.
All of this information is freely available and could be found out by anyone who was actually interested in looking at the history of the place objectively. Of course, if one doesn't know anything about the actual history of the place and that it was a majority Bini village for centuries, then one might make the mistake Ambrose Alli did, and assume that the Ijaw agitators had an actual case for their claims.
As for the example of your village that you gave. Read #5 on my list above and you'll see why this is a different kind of situation.
Also, different ethnic nationalities would probably not agree over issues of land as easily as different clans within the same ethnic group, so that alone makes it a more complicated situation. So-called Ijo were also porters to British Expeditionary forces. It is funny to read attempts by the Ijo to make us believe they have graduated from boat people to landowners. |

Ibime: Since Nasoeb is a Bonny boy, Ndigbo should feel free to come and claim him. From his vituperations on this thread, a big shock awaits any Ndigbo who would try to claim a Bonny man as one of his own.
Ama means town in Ijaw
Whilst Wari means House or Compound.
It would seem the Southern Igbo took the name Ama from their Ijaw neighbours or vice-versa or perhaps its just a mere coincidence. I don't see the French claiming that they own the Television just because the English stole the word from France. Nor do the Romans own the word Bath just because they invented the Bath. The attempt by Dede to claim exclusivity of a word speaks more of his neanderthal approach to issues. Our forefathers have been exchaning wards and wares since Dede's great-great-great-great-great grandfather was wearing nappies. There was no iota of attempt on my part to exclusively claim the word, AMA, for Ndigbo. I do not have such cultural or traditional authority to attempt such a thing. If there are individuals bent on changing or claiming words to suit their socio-political ends, I will honestly say Ijo. From Opu Obu, Amaikiri, Mmerenini, Mbagamba, Ama Onye anabo to Azumiri, Ijo have relentlessly tried to change the Igbo names and words to rhyme with the language spoken by Akens in (Gold Coast) later known as Ghana. |
