Empiree: You can hug transformer over Muslim matter, no one cares. Five daily prayers are prescribed with specific times in Islam. They are obligatory. I have no quarrel whatsoever with that, especially when done privately. It is non of your business if Muslims leave their desk to pray. It is absolutely my business if a public officer being paid with my tax abandons his duty regularly to attend to his private religious matters. On January 2nd after New year, eventhough New Year is for everybody, Christians still occupy offices with senseless prayers and lock up offices whilst praying outside and keep customers waiting outside. This is equally condemnable and I will never support it: just FYI by the way - I am not a Christian either. Speaking of hijab in police force, are you more democratic than United States?. Are you more secularized than United States?. Let me refresh your memory in case you have forgotten or not aware. Back in 2005 to 2008 Iraq war, there was debate on permissibility of hijab in military and beard for the Jews in uniform. It has nothing to do with Islamization. It is only here in Nigeria you guys are shouting Islamization because your mind are dirty towards Islam. The US have their sensitivities and we have ours. |

Our perennial fuel shortage and the unending hardship is causes could have been non existent if political considerations had given way to pragmatic solutions. Enough money has been spent Our refineries that would have given us 10 additional refineries if they had been run like real businesses. Nigeria is a very corrupt country. Besides corruption, ethnic and religious considerations override business common sense. What you call the national assets are and have bern mere tools for well entrenched feudal oligarchs to exert their dominion over our commonwealth. Gbam. And examples abound. E.g: Ajaokuta Steel. |

JohnBullMySon: There's is a difference between how you see Islam and how the west sees it. You may see it as one (The way people say that every muslim is a potential terrorist or sth like that) But the west sees two religions, Islam and Radical Islam. The west value freedom of religion and religious rights as fundamental to a peaceful world. Hence the sensitivity towards discriminated religions such as Islam. However the west view radical Islam as a threat and have been in the forefront of the battle against it for the past 30 - 40 years.
If you want to understand it, Read CNN's Fareed Zakaria's articles on Islam and Radical Islam or watch some of his recorded shows on Islam. https://fareedzakaria.com/columns/tag/Islam Thank you, but I know and understand all this. One thing you should understand also is that there is a difference between the views of Islam held by the average Westerner and the politically correct sensitive distinctions made by politicians which you are referring to. These are the politicians who like to repeat that Islam is a religion of peace, even if it is anything but. |

Of course they could have done much better, but with standards of leadership we seen in this country, the OBJ and GEJ eras stand out for their sincere commitments to re-priortize developmental issues ahead of politics . And yes, we did see demonstrable improvements in economic growth and middle class expansion. And Yaradua/ GEJ stood out for rule of law/ respect for human rights. |

Reference: Why are people so hard against this. The police is a service which means those that they serve matter. If a dress code conveys a sense of respect and belonging, it should be embraced. If it will attract more women of the muslim faith into the service then I think it is a good thing. If you are against it and then speak of diversity, is that not hypocrisy? The hypocrisy you should avert your mind to is that which isolates the dress code of one religion and makes allowance for it in a multi religious kwantiri. What about the others, what provision has been made to accommodate their religious preferences and sensitivities. And you dare actually mention diversity?Nigga please. |

Mynd44: Let the officers dress this way, it does not violate their uniform The truth is that we simply dont wish to be serious or grown up in these matters otherwise we would recognize that religion is a personal matter and should not be brought into the workplace especially in any way that interferes with the nature of required work, or established standards of professionalism. This is the same way in which you have Muslims every where and in every ministry and department who will insist on leaving their desks for their prescribed prayers multiple times a day. Even in situations where it is manifestly unreasonable and even dangerous to others (such as a hospitable for instance). You will have people saying that, oh no, its my faith, and it comes before everything else. The truth is that if it is that important then please dont take that job that may require your service at prayer time, okay? Don't go to a school that has a uniform, a force that has a uniform, or any other organization that has a uniform and insist on wearing your own religious outfit because "it is my faith and it comes above everything else." That is nonsensical indiscipline and lack of professionalism. That is just like a female soldier refusing to wear trousers as prescribed battle-gear and insisting on wearing maybe a burqa at the war front because it is her faith and comes before everything else. We really should stop all this nonsense: your religion is your private affair, practice it in private and stop imposing it on process and systems that ought to be standardized and professional. If you will be consistent with what you are saying just imagine an adherent of the Celestial Church of Christ insisting on attending to official functions at a work place bare-footed, because it is his or her faith. Is that not nonsensical, and yet if you insist on this argument of "it is my faith" then you ought to permit not just that, but every other religious oddity that it may take anyone's fancy to wear in a work place, including dreadlocks for Rastafarians. ^ The above was my response to another poster in another thread. Let me just add to it by saying with respect to your point about how they are risking their lives for our safety, the truth is that this sort of muddying of the waters by mixing your religious dictates with your professional service also puts lives at risk in many ways - a simple example is that of those officers who will leave their duty posts to go and heed the call of prayer multiple times a day. |

If he insists to move around barefooted in the professional does that stop me or others from putting on my shoes?, Is it our legs?
As long as he does his job diligently and does not say others must join him in working around barefooted, It is his problem not mine. As his supervisor would you condone a police officer coming to work barefooted on the grounds that it is his religion. Be honest. |

Emir01: The original top and trousers are already westernized or "Christianized", so stop fighting because of ordinary scarf. It's senseless opposing scarf for our personnel when countries with less population of Muslim endorsed it. Hijab is a fundamental right of every Muslim female. It's not for fashion. You can't seperate hijab and islam. It's ordained by Allah. Why are the muslims not fighting because of quire dress wearing by lawyers? Will you support - 1. Adherents of Celestial Church of Christ being permitted to go barefoot in the Police Force or Army while on duty. 2. Rastafarians being permitted to wear dreadlocks in their professional capacities on religious grounds as well. 3. Traditionalists who insist on wearing native talismans or painting their faces while on duty in the Police or Army. Answer these questions honestly and you will be on your way to the simple and obvious truth - namely: that while everyone has freedom of religion, it is absurd to try to impose your religious-wear on uniformed professional environments. |

Since 1983 when some criminal soldiers arm-robbed their way into power, Nigeria was thrust into a trajectory desolation. Please go back and study the state of the nation in 1999 prior to the coming of OBJ. It was as confusing and hopeless as it is today. The OBJ era, looking at it from where Nigeria was and where Nigeria is today, was undoubtedly The GOLDEN ERA of leadership and governance in Nigeria ( going by the standards we have seen in our lifetime). Put your APC vs PDP sentiments aside. In my lifetime, it was the only era that middle class ( the standard measure of progress) expanded considerably . OBJ reorganized governance and established templates and standards for efficient governance going Forward. Oh he did well, but let us not deny his dark side which that poster alluded to. |

The policy is in line with our constitution,. Stormtrooper11: That's not a problem. Their some things that are compulsory in peoples religions. We should respect each other faith and tolerate each other. How would you feel if you were to give up something in your faith because you wanna serve in the public service? Christian police officers do morning devotion in police stations, Christian police officers have their chaplains, same as their Muslim brothers. If they need anything else which is compulsory in their faith, the Christians should get it. This is not about dividing each other. It's about recognizing our diversity and differences, accepting these diversities, then we tolerate them. Jakumo: Obasanjo also allowed phones to become widely available to Nigerians for the first time in the nation's history. Previous to Obasanjo's tenure as president, anyone seeking to phone the USA from Nigeria would need to go and line up in a NITEL office for 2 hours, before having the "operator" eavesdrop on every word that is said on those antique phones. Back then, many used to go to Oluwole in Lagos Island to make these international calls - and quite often one would only be talking to a hustler sitting a few rooms away pretending to be a friend or guest of the family member one is trying to reach. On a side note, Obasanjo did accomplish a great deal, I agree, but I do not align myself with those who credit him with the introduction of mobile technology to Nigeria. Certain things simply flow on the tide of time and it would be erroneous to say it was the President that did it. He only needed to stand aside and let the tide flow, thats all. |

It means it recognizes the existence of our religions. Their is nothing wrong with wearing hijabs. Muslim people believe that wearing hijab is compulsory as ordained by God. Not wearing hijab or covering their hair, is a sin in Islam. The question is, should a similar provision not be made for all other religions? |
