Ecstasy154:
The Yoruba Council of Elders, YCE, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to, without further delay, call the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai to order.

The Yoruba elders pointed out that the campaign by the north to contest the 2023 presidency with the South will plunge the country into a major crisis.

It said there should be no controversy over 2023, adding that it is the South’s turn in 2023 to takeover power.

YCE, scribe, Dr Kunle Olajide warned that Northern politicians must not make careless statements or remarks that can plunge Nigeria into crisis since Nigeria is a fragile country, and presently tottering and bleeding.

“Buhari should call APC members to order over 2023. He should call his party members to order. Buhari should call Governor el-Rufai to order. These people are not only distracting Buhari, but they are also disturbing the peace of Nigeria,” he was quoted by Sun.

“There should be no controversy over 2023. It is the South’s turn in 2023. Zoning is sacrosanct, and el-Rufai, Tofa and these groups from the North calling for the scrapping of zoning in 2023 are not only greedy and unpatriotic, but they are also enemies of Nigeria. They want to derail Nigeria. Northern leaders and elders should call el-Rufai, and Tofa to order.

“Nigeria is a fragile country, and presently the country is tottering and bleeding, politicians have to watch it. They must not make careless statements or remarks that can plunge Nigeria into crisis.

“This is what el-Rufai, Tofa and others calling for the scrapping of zoning are doing. If they truly love Nigeria, they should stop making inflammatory statements. They should not allow their personal interests and greed to put Nigeria’s unity in jeopardy.

“Nigeria is already deeply divided, and scrapping zoning is like inviting anarchy. Scrapping zoning will create further division among Nigerians.

“The present zoning arrangement should not be tinkered with. Scrapping zoning will have grave consequences for Nigeria.

“For Tofa and el-Rufai to say that zoning is dead or should be scrapped when it is supposed to be the turn of the South in 2023 is an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians, and it is not acceptable.

“I believe that Gov. el-Rufai is just testing the waters by saying that zoning should be scrapped, and perhaps he is doing that because of the rumoured reports that he has presidential ambition in 2023, but if he has that ambition, he should just drop or forget it because by now his eyes should be clear that he and others in their group in the North who also have same interest will be resisted.

“Why must el-Rufai, Tofa and others in the North be calling for the scrapping of zoning in 2023 when it is supposed to be the turn of the South? This is why I said earlier that some of these politicians are greedy and very unpatriotic. They don’t think of Nigeria first. They are selfish and self-centred.

“Then again, Tofa and el-Rufai should not think there is one monolithic North again. The North is divided now and you can see that the people of the Middle Belt are already saying that they are no longer part of the North.

“For me, I believe that all these jostling for power at the centre will stop if Nigeria is restructured. If we return to a true practice of federalism like it was done in the First Republic, all these struggles for power at the centre will stop.

“Not only that, restructuring will also put an end to all the present socio-economic woes facing Nigeria. This is what I expect all these elements in the North and APC talking about scrapping zoning in 2023 to tell President Muhammadu Buhari to do.

“If Buhari truly loves Nigeria and also shares the same vision and ideals with the founding fathers of Nigeria, he should take the issue of restructuring serious, and ensure that he does it before the expiration of his second term.”

Even the YCE themselves are not sincere, justice n equity demands the south east to produce the president in 2023, anything other than that is injustice.

That is 100% false!!!

Messi is an Academy product... That establish himself in a senior team at a younger age... Despite the fact that the team had a lot of good players... His talent made way for him..
When Ronaldinho saw him, he said this guy will be the best player in history

When Eto'o saw him, he told Viera that there is boy in Barcelona.. By the time he retired, he will make football look like nobody has ever played it before...

He is a genius...

When Capelli saw him, he said "I have never seen anyone as good at this age"

So, his talent make him get to the 1st team and his hardwork keep him...

Stop saying, he had it easy.. Nobody have it easy in modern football because you graduated from an academy..

Bijan krick scored more than 900 goals for Barca B, but where is he today?? Giovanni don Santos too.. There were many talented guys from Barcelona but Messi kept on pushing and pushing...

For Ronaldo, he has a good career path too.. Just one friendly against Man united give him a shot at the best club in England.. That prove his talent... And he had the greatest coach of all time who continues to coach the club for a long time... And kind Man united teammates who help him adapt to a new environment in England. .

Real Madrid is the complete opposite of this, about 6 Ballon d'or players were in the team in 2003, ... There was Floretino Perez who prefer to field established and popular players than young talent.. Perez dictate starting XI for coaches for marketing reasons.. .

There is no way a young talent, 17 year old Ronaldo will make the team... The best is to be loaned and you and I k of that he may not be able to be the player he becomes if he played for Real Sociedad or loaned to even Ac Milan..

Unless he is a graduate of Real Madrid Academy, there is no way he will have a comparable career to Messi..
This is the best career Ronaldo would ever have, he might not have it better if the path is different.. Sir Ferguson and kind Man united teammates made him a man...
Real Madrid would never forge him especially in 2003 era when Madrid was more of a celebrity team..
Even from your own analysis it's clear that Ronaldo coming as an outsider unlike Messi to achieve what he did in Madrid was incredible,he outscored Messi for the ten years he was in Spain n this should be pointer to something,I remember the Brazilian Ronaldo was terrific In Barcelona he left for inter Milan but couldn't replicate the crazy goals only to return to Madrid score more goals again,as long as Messi remains in Barcelona only there will always be doubt about him.

So in your mind pep failed in Bayern and Mancity because he's yet to win the champions League there? If that's how you measure success no need to argue with you.

Ronaldinho was already declining when he was leaving Barcelona Eto was successful at inter won the UCL and League.

You don't need to marry more than one wife to prove your potency.

Messi is Barcelona if he doesn't play the entire Team suffers. Messi made Barcelona a comfort zone for players. To me Messi proved his worth when Xavi and pep left he started playing in the Midfield and still scores goals I would like to see Ronaldo support his midfielders and retain possession not staying up front and wait for free meal. If Ronaldo had started his career at Real Madrid he wouldn't have left because his playing is one of the best clubs.
His movement from Portugal to England to Spain was a ladder to his career and the reason he left Madrid was a misunderstanding between him and Perez. He spent Ten yrs in Madrid the longest in his career if Messi started his career in a smaller club he would have switched. Messi is the Greatest even the Pele that you guys are hailing played is career at Santos before he moved out Messi will go back to Argentina to end career let him be for now.
During the ten years that Ronaldo spent in Spain did he not score more goals than Messi, yes or no?

So once I don't follow your view it becomes hate, perhaps you are one of buhari's zombies, how many seasons has guardiola spent in England, has he repeated his Barcelona exploits in England or even while he was in Germany?,how many goals did ETO scored in his stay in inter compared to same duration in Barcelona, what happened to Ronaldinho, rivaldo when they left Barcelona?,look I don't hate Messi, infact he is a great footballer no doubt,I did sports a lot n I know how playing in different environment with different players can affect an athlete's performance, this is the reason I always give it to Christiano because I know the mental n emotional toughness required to succeed in different environment, this is what I wish Messi could also prove.

If Messi leave Barcelona today and play for Bayern Munich, leave Bayern Munich and play for Liverpool/Man city, Leave Man city and play for PSG, and finally play in that retirement league called SerieA with Juventus, he would win more trophies and win more Ballon d'or than he would ever win by staying frustrated in a single club!

He is loyal because Barcelona is the reason why he could gain the physical height to be a professional... You will never understand how much that mean to him.!!!

Growth Hormones deficiency almost ruined him, Barcelona saved his health!!
You can't be so sure my friend, things could change you know,if you will just be sincere with yourself,Christiano has operated under much hasher conditions than Messi, even while in Madrid it was never so smooth for Ronaldo yet he continued to deliver, Messi enjoys a demigod status in Barcelona which make things easy for him, many other clubs could have solved his medical challenge too it was not an impossibility made possible.just tell me that Barcelona are doing everything to please Messi into staying because they fear for the worse if he leaves,I doubt it very much if Messi can replicate his Barcelona exploits in every other club no matter how big, Ronaldo has proven himself Messi only remains a probability which may fail as in his national team, remember Ronaldo has proven himself there too.so my view stiy stands.

Lionel Messi broke the record of most club goals (420) in Europe's top leagues after scoring against Sevilla. He outscored Ronaldo (419) with 70 games fewer.

Lionel Messi scores his first goal of the season with lovely free-kick vs Sevilla. In total, he has scored 420 goals in La Liga so far with 455 matches played.

In contrast, Ronaldo has bagged 419 league goals in the top 5 leagues. He scored 84 goals in Premier League, 311 in La Liga and now 24 in Serie A.

But Ronaldo uses 525 games to reach 419 goals which means Messi breaks his most club goals' record in Europe's top leagues with 70 games fewer.

PoliticsRe: Minimum Wage: Ngige Says FG Has Commenced Payment by Deepthoughts: 5:17pm On Oct 06, 2019
Handsomecole:
We Have Commenced Payment of New Minimum Wage – Chris Ngige

Kenneth Udeh, Abuja

Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, has said that the N30,000 new Minimum Wage is “a reality”, asserting that the Federal Government has commenced payment of the new wage to workers at the lower cadres of the public service.

He argued that the current quagmire between the Federal Government and organised labour arose from adjusting the wages of government workers from grade level 7 to 14, with the two parties yet to agree on final figures. Collective bargaining, the Minister said, was the only way to end the tussle, and that once agreed other grade levels would start earning their new wages.

In an interview with Daily Sun‘s KENNETH UDEH in Abuja, Minister Ngige spoke on topical national issues, including Nigeria’s 59th Independence anniversary, social investment programmes and the impact of Nigeria’s border closure on domestic industries.

What is the Federal Government’s stance on the N30,000 new Minimum Wage?

I understand that the N30,000 Minimum Wage is a reality, that is why we have started the implementation. The N30,000 Minimum Wage is for the man at the lowest position in the job ladder, so we are already paying that. The public servants of those offices are already earning the new Minimum Wage. With the consequential adjustment, we have a problem with adjusting the wages of level 7 to level 14 workers. The problem is with negotiations, because the two parties [government and labour] are yet to agree on the figures. It is expected to happen because it is a negotiation. And anything that concerns wages and negotiations, you should be ready for hard negotiations, especially when the economy is not too good. The good thing happening now is collective bargaining, because it is a consequential adjustment. So, I do not see it as a problem that cannot be solved. We have to solve it. And once we solve it, other grade levels will start earning their new scales of wages.

PoliticsRe: Sowore, Jalingo: SERAP Writes NJC, Seeks Directives On Citizens’ Rights by Deepthoughts: 11:11am On Oct 06, 2019
Tobbydhayor90:
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP) has sent an open letter to Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman, National Judicial Council (NJC), urging him to use his offices and leadership of the NJC to “urgently develop measures and issue directives to all courts to respond to the disturbing trends by state governments and federal government to use the court as a tool to suppress citizens’ human rights.”

SERAP said: “Across the country, state governors and federal government are charging citizens, mostly journalists, bloggers and activists, with serious crimes such as ‘treason’, ‘treasonable felony’ or bogus crime of ‘insulting public officials’, simply for exercising their human rights.”

In the letter dated 4 October 2019 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said: “These charges, refusal of bail and granting of bail on stringent conditions seem to be dangerous manipulation of judicial authority and functions by high-ranking politicians, something which the NJC and the judiciary under your watch should resist.”

SERAP also said: “In the climate of a growing clampdown on human rights of journalists and activists by several state governments and federal government, the NJC ought to push back and act as protector of individuals’ rights against abuses by the authorities. We believe that the courts, not the state government or federal government, should have the final say in matters of citizens’ human rights.”

According to the organization, “The NJC should ensure that when the authorities disobey court orders and suppress human rights, they are not allowed to come to the court and seek reliefs until they purge their contempt. Otherwise, the justice system and the Nigerian constitution become a solemn mockery.”

The letter, copied to Mr. Diego GARCÍA-SAYÁN, UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, read in part: “If the practice by state governments and federal government is allowed to continue, the courts will be relegated to desuetude, and will lead to arbitrary and unrestricted power as well as further suppression of citizens’ human rights.”

“It is essential for the NJC to issue directives to all courts to promptly consider on the face of the papers filed by the authorities whether the charges brought against journalists, bloggers and activists are truly based on facts or fabricated to secure indefinite detention of citizens with judicial authority.”

“In several cases, journalists, bloggers and activists have either been denied bail, as it is the case with journalist Agba Jalingo, or granted bail with stringent conditions that implicitly violate human rights, as it is the case with journalist and activist Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare. In all of such cases, the alleged offences are not constitutionally and internationally recognizable.”

“It is important for the judiciary to exercise all the judicial power placed in its hands by the constitution with firm determination and to guard against encroachments on that power by either the state governments or the federal government.”

“Even during many years of military dictatorship when the constitution was suspended and with it, Nigerians’ fundamental rights, the judiciary was still able to play an important role in securing protection of individuals’ rights and rejecting any forms of executive rascality by drawing on a variety of sources, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.”

“The return of democracy in 1999 gave rise to a legitimate public expectation that the NJC and the judiciary would be more active and proactive in enforcing the fundamental rights of Nigerians and pushing back in cases of violations and abuses of those rights, for the sake of the Nigerian constitution of 1999 (as amended) and as a step forward for increased accountability and greater integrity in government.”

“Nigerians now have a high degree of scepticism about the ability of the authorities at the state and federal levels to protect their human rights. We urge you to ensure that the NJC and the judiciary consistently demonstrate their original and sacred functions of standing between government and the governed.”

“Charging citizens for crimes of treason and treasonable felony or ‘insult’ simply for exercising their human rights shows the authorities’ lack of commitment to protecting the human rights of all Nigerians, particularly those who perform critical roles and contribute to strengthening and sustaining the Nigerian democratic system.”

“No government should have the power to use the courts as a tool of overriding the rights of individuals. The NJC has a responsibility to ensure that the courts play a central role in enforcing fundamental rights, and ensuring that the authorities do not use the courts as a tool to charge citizens with crimes, which are not constitutionally and internationally recognizable, simply for exercising their human rights.”

“Democracy requires some protection of the weak from the strong. The NJC ought to push for courts' activism in the area of human rights, especially at this time when the authorities are regularly clamping down on citizens’ human rights. This will enhance democracy, the rule of law, and will be entirely consistent with the constitutional role of the judiciary.”

“Human rights and constitutional principles are fundamental and it is the role of an independent judiciary to give effect to those rights and principles, within the rule of law.”

“We believe that the NJC can ensure that the courts are better protectors of human rights than the executive at state and federal levels can ever be. Indeed, Nigerians including journalists, bloggers and activists require protection from both the state governments and federal government.”

“We believe that it is only an independent and courageous judiciary that can ensure full respect for the human rights of those brought before the courts by the authorities.”

“Agba Jalingo, journalist and publisher of the online CrossRiverWatch, is charged with treason over a report about an alleged diversion of N500 million by the Cross River governor, Ben Ayade. According to our information, a Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, and presided over by Justice Simon Amobeda on October 4 2019 denied him bail. He was handcuffed to another inmate when he appeared in court.”

“Similarly, journalist and activist Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare are facing trial on seven counts of treasonable felony, fraud, cyber-stalking and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari, simply for exercising their human rights.”

“Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu granted Sowore and Bakare bail but imposed stringent conditions that implicitly violate their constitutional rights to personal liberty, presumption of innocence, freedom of movement and freedom of expression.”

“We hope that the aspects highlighted will help guide your action by ensuring that the NJC is able to urgently respond to the threats to judicial independence and authority highlighted above. We would be happy to provide further information or to discuss any of these issues in more detail with you.”

mrvitalis:
Chief Edwin Clark, a nationalist who served under former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, as Federal Commissioner for Information, in this interview, speaks on the need for true federalism and why zoning of the nation’s presidency is paramount among other issues. Excerpts:

Let us talk about the state of the nation…

Things are very bad but we thank God that we are surviving and we remain united. The challenges are however many. Today, the country seems to be divided religiously and ethnically despite the fact that we all talk about unity. Security challenge is growing. The situation has not been effectively controlled. About four years ago, we were talking about Boko Haram in the North-East, and we felt that, with the promise made by the ruling party for ‘change’ and having the country being headed by a former military Head of State, Boko Haram would be a thing of the past. But, today, Boko Haram is still a problem. And apart from Boko Haram, we can see what is going on in the North-West, especially in Sokoto and Katsina. People are being killed, maimed and kidnapped. In Taraba, Plateau and Benue states, the situation is not different. We have, today, in the South, herdsmen ransacking everywhere, harassing maiming, kidnapping and raping women. Things are not normal.

Is this the Nigeria our heroes past foresaw when they fought for independence?

I will say no because in the First Republic, even though we had some problems, the unity of Nigeria was very much guaranteed. During the pre-independence era, we were working together until 1953 when Tony Enahoro moved the motion for the independence of Nigeria and the Northern Region walked out of parliament. The British government invited Nigerian leaders to London for the 1954 and 1957 conferences and so on which led us to independence in 1960. During the period, there was peace and each of the regions was developing at its own pace while revenue allocation was based on what you produced in your area. You keep 50 percent of the allocation while the remaining 50 percent goes to the Federal Government. And of the 50 percent that goes to the Federal Government, 20 percent is kept by the Federal Government while the remaining 30 percent is shared among other regions. Until 1963 when the Mid-West Region was created, each of the regions had its own Constitution and Agent General in London. Today, you find that one of the houses acquired by the Western Nigerian government in those days is part of the Nigeria High Commission in London. Then, there was neither envy nor hatred. Both Muslims and Christians were living in peace and harmony. But when the Army struck, problem started. Then General Gowon came into power in 1966 and there was problem. The killing of prominent Nigerian politicians resulted into the counter-coup of July 1966, leading to the Aburi Accord in 1967 which did not materialise. General Gowon created 12 states after the civil war. So, today, we have 36 states including the Federal Capital. Perhaps, those who fought for independence in 1960 when we got it never envisaged that, 59 years after, Nigeria will still be so much divided and there would be many challenges. Now there is hunger; unemployment has risen to 23 percent; Fulani herdsmen carry AK 47 around and we were told they are from Libya, Burkina Faso and Mali among others and these people have been allowed to come into Nigeria untouched. The next thing we heard was that they wanted RUGA in the 36 states of the federation, meaning that these Fulani herdsmen would now be settled in the 36 states. Nigerians kicked against it, and it was suspended; but we hope it would be suspended forever because it could divide this country

What then are the chances of the South-West in 2023?

They should stop thinking of becoming the President of Nigeria. What does Tinubu have to offer that the people of the South-East cannot offer? What is the justification for them to become the President of Nigeria? Is it because they belong to the APC? They should not be thinking of how to divide Nigeria. We must all unite and have respect for ourselves. The South-West should allow other people to have a taste of power. There is no way the South-West would be better than the South-East on the 2023 presidency.

What is the way forward?

Let us practice true federalism in this country. Let every Nigerian have a sense of belonging. Without restructuring, the future is bleak. You remember the other day Mr. President said ‘if we do not kill corruption, corruption will kill us’. I also believe that if we do not restructure this country, non-restructuring of Nigeria will kill Nigeria. In a situation where some people feel they are superior to others, we don’t have a country. Nobody wants to be a slave to another person. Let the elders of the country meet from time to time to discuss the challenges of Nigeria. Like former President Olusegun Obasanjo, I have advocated that all stakeholders, including youths and women, have a roundtable to discuss the security of this country. What is happening in the North-East and North-West should not be regarded as a northern affair but a Nigerian affair because, sooner or later, it will happen to all of us.

PoliticsRe: Minimum Wage: FG, Workers’ Face-off Worsens As Labour Rejects Sack Option by Deepthoughts: 9:18am On Oct 05, 2019
Ecstasy154:
•Says threat to downsize cheap blackmail
•Ngige: the times call for sacrifice

Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

Organised labour on Friday dismissed as cheap blackmail a statement by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, that the Federal Government might lay off some workers in the public service should labour insist on having its way on the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage.

The Secretary, Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), Alade Lawal, told The Nation that labour would not be cowed by such threat.

He also faulted claim by Ngige that government would require N580 billion annually to pay workers the minimum wage across board as demanded by labour.

“As far as we are concerned, anybody talking about retrenchment is blackmail. It is just cheap blackmail,” Lawal said.

He added: “We don’t subscribe to that. If they like, let them come to the negotiation table so that we can reach an agreement and implement so that everybody can move on. If they like, let them leave it.

“They will say they can’t meet labour’s demand because they are not doing their homework. How will they say it is not feasible (to meet labour’s demand?).

“The figure they are parading is not correct. They don’t need N580 billion. They don’t need it to implement the minimum wage.

“The number of employees in the federal public service is not up to one million. They say it is 1.33 million. Let them disaggregate it and tell Nigerians. Break it down and let us do verification.

“The component part of these 1.33 million employees they are talking about is the consolidated public salary structure which majorly is domiciled under the IPPIS platform.

“As we speak, the employees there are not up to 70,000. They said in their own papers they are using for negotiation is 183,000. Where do they get all those things from?

“Because you want to negotiate something now you come to negotiation table and you start playing with figures. It is so sad. They think they are talking to the labour of pre-independence. Some of them are just lucky to be there. It is not that they are better than some of us.”

He said the government team negotiating the consequential adjustment on minimum wage was yet to reach out to labour to tell them when negotiation would resume.

Lawal insisted that labour would not back down on its percentage increase demand from government for workers on levels 7-14 and levels 15-17.

“Up till now, they have not reached out to us. They are the owners of the knife and they also have the yam with them, so they can do it the way they like. But if this is the way we want to run our country, then I am sorry, because we have a long way to go.

“You know where we started from. We started from 66.66 per cent across board because the minimum wage was increased from N18,000 to N30,000, an increase of 66.66 per cent.

“So we said apply that across board. They cried that the federal government would not be able to pay. For levels 7-14, we came down to 50 per cent. Then for levels 15-17, 40 per cent, but they said they cannot pay.

“We came down again for levels 7-14, 40 per cent and levels 15-17 30 per cent. They cried loud and said they could not pay. We came down again; levels 7-14, 35 per cent, levels 15-17 30 per cent. Again, they said they cannot pay. We came down again. Levels 7-14, 30 per cent, levels 15-17, 25 per cent, yet they said they cannot pay before we came down to this 29 per cent for levels 7-14 and 24 per cent for levels 15-17.

“To start talking about going down now will make us look unserious; that is the meaning.”

Lawal also said labour was not sure if President Muhammadu Buhari had been properly briefed on the stalemate.

He said: “Now they are not telling Mr. President the truth. That is my worry. “Truly, they are his aides.

“If we cannot reach him, they are the ones that will reach him. And if we say it is A and they go to him and say it is B, since he has not put on the table the machinery to fact-check most of the things they are telling him, it will be difficult. That is the tragedy of the whole situation. It is very, very sad.”

He also said that all the promises made by government after the fuel price increase from N87 to N145 are yet to be fulfilled.

His words: “Let me explain one thing to you: when fuel price was increased from N87 to N145, an increase of about 60 per cent, the landing cost of fuel was less than N100 at that time.

“They raked in a lot of money; trillions of naira. They promised heaven and earth, social intervention. What did they do for workers? Nothing.

“For the fuel price increase from N87 to N145, they set up a palliative committee to placate labour, to ensure that we didn’t go on strike. I served on that committee and we made far-reaching recommendations.

“Labour was not given anything. Whereas, to placate us, they said that they had earmarked N600 billion for intervention that we should just come and meet and discuss how we were going to apply that N600 billion across the various sectors, including adding something to workers’ salaries in the area of transport.

“All the recommendations that we made, they didn’t do anything; not a single thing. At the negotiation table, they said they didn’t say so. Is that seriousness?

“Again, as at 2011 when the last increase was effected, dollar was 150 to the naira. Now it is 350. In effect, what you are saying is that if the foreign exchange receipt of the Federal Government is $20 billion, at 150 to a dollar, you know how much government will get to spend.

“Then at N360, that’s a difference of two hundred and something naira. You have a basket full of naira.

“Now you are spending on the so called infrastructure, you are spending on the sectors of the economy, you are answering to the greed of the political elite; those who are making the wealth for the government you kept them, you didn’t do anything. How can somebody now come in 2019 when all these things have happened within the national economy?

“Even on this VAT thing they are talking about, they are saying they are going to rake in trillions of naira; on this VAT increase that they have not even done something for workers.”

Workers should ignore Ngige – TUC

Speaking separately in Enugu on Friday on the issue, the Enugu State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Chukwuma Igbokwe, asked workers to ignore Ngige’s statement that government could not pay the new minimum wage unless some workers were laid off.

According to him, Ngige probably did not know what he was saying when he said that government could not afford to pay the consequential salary adjustment unless the workforce was downsized.

He said that government could pay N580 billion workers wage bill, pointing out that government had already paid N500 billion on arrears of salary.

“I don’t think Ngige knows what he is saying,” the labour leader said.

He said that the organised labour had made it clear that upward increment in worker’s salary became necessary because of the prevailing economic realities in the country such as the increase in monetary foreign exchange, VAT as well as general high cost of living in the country.

“Labour has been magnanimous in scaling down their demand from 66.6 per cent to 29 per cent and 24 per cent, and for this reason, government should heed their demand,” Igbokwe said.

Ngige: The times call for sacrifice

A statement issued by Ngige’s Special Adviser on Media, Nwachukwu Obidiwe, yesterday, quoted the minister as asking workers to make some sacrifice for the country.

It also described the minister’s warning about the consequences of meeting labour’s demand as patriotic.

The statement said: “The statement made by the minister yesterday (Thursday) concerning the consequential adjustment on the minimum wage is patriotic.

“Government has promised a thorough ventilation of all issues.

“When negotiation resumes government is going to open its books for labour to see the federal government income and expenditure.

“The times call for sacrifice.”

Receiving a delegation of the United Labour Congress (ULC) led by its President, Mr. Joe Ajeiro, on Thursday, Ngige had said that the implantation of the new minimum wage based on figures worked out by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) was not sustainable.

Government, according to him, does not want a situation where it will have to lay off workers, as doing so will add to the burden of the citizenry.

Ngige appealed to labour to accept the consequential adjustment from levels 7 to 17, adding that the federal government had only three months left to implement the new minimum wage.

He said: “Government cannot afford that kind of money now. Besides, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is more interested in the lowest cadre of workers which are those on grade level 1 step 1 and level 6 step 1. These are the ones who the N30,000 will have greater impact on.

“Government has done their own homework and brought out what they can use to defend this consequential adjustment. Grade 1 to 6 does not have any problem, but 7 to 14 band and 15 to 17 band, this is where we have the problem.

“So if you push government to go and accede to an increment which its resources cannot accommodate, you are indirectly asking them to retrench workers so that the few that are remaining will get this ‘big big’ money. We don’t want that.

“From 2015 the president has made it clear that he is not out to inflict pains on Nigerians and that he does not want to create unemployment.

“But even at that our increase in population is galloping and our resources are not consequentially increasing to meet up. That is why we have a lot of unemployed youths on the streets today.

“We need to arrive at an agreement as soon as possible so that we can use the 2019 budget allocation to defray this consequential adjustment because it will be bad if we are unable to do it and we finish this financial year by December because the budget circle is going to return to January/December 2020.

“So we have three months only before this recurrent fund are swept back into government treasury. That is the law.”

He regretted the inability of the joint negotiating team of both the government and labour to agree on the consequential adjustments, insisting that the new wage may become bloated by workers on grade levels 7-14 and 15-17.

Organised labour is already mobilising its members to embark on strike on the 16th of this month.

PoliticsRe: Border Closure: Hameed Ali Reveals How Customs Made N9.2bn In Just One Day by Deepthoughts: 10:58am On Oct 03, 2019
cyrilamx:
The comptroller general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Hameed Ali, says the recent border closure is a blessing for the state

- Ali says while the country made N9.2 billion in just one day, it has continued to rake in money in billions

- The customs boss recalls being scared when the implementation of the policy on border closure was to be implemented

Colonel Hameed Ali, comptroller general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has revealed that the policy on border closure is assisting in the revenue generation bid of the agency.

According to Ali, who said this while speaking with a joint National Assembly committee on finance in Abuja, the agency, at one time, made N9.2 billion in one day

He further said that the agency now makes at least N5 billion to N 6 billion on a daily basis.

Ali noted that since the closure of the borders, most cargoes now berth in Nigeria instead of Benin Republic as was the case in the past.

"When we closed the border my fear was that our revenue is going to drop. To be honest our revenue kept increasing.

“There was a day in September that we collected N9.2 billion in one day. It has never happened before.

“This is after the closure of the border and since then, we have maintained an average of about N4.7 billion to N5.8 billion on a daily basis which is far more than we used to collect," he said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the comptroller-general of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Hameed Ali, recently disclosed the unwillingness of the federal government to change its stand on the closure of borders anytime soon.

Ali, who spoke at Idiroko, Ogun state, said the federal government is not ready to open the borders as the country continues to check the trends of smuggling.

PoliticsRe: UNGA: Aisha Buhari Missing As First Ladies Protest Against Rape, Child Marriage by Deepthoughts: 9:21am On Sep 28, 2019
dorothybella:
Aisha, the wife of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, was conspicuously absent as Africa’s First Ladies, led by Sierra Leone’s Fatima Maada Bio, brought their campaign to ban early child marriage and sexual violence against women and girls before the UN General Assembly.

The First Ladies, including Jeanette Kagame (Rwanda), Clar Weah (Liberia), Antoinette Sassou Nguesso (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Auxilla Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe), continued their passionate appeal for the world to support their “Hands Off Our Girls! Campaign.

Nigeria is one of the countries with an alarming rate of challenges women and the girl child face.

Mrs. Aisha has not attended public functions in recent weeks but she’s usually represented by her Senior Special Assistant on Administration, Dr Hajo Sani.
Why the president’s wife did not attend the UNGA event said “she was represented”.

According to Girls Not Brides, a global partnership of more than 1300 civil society organisations working towards ending child marriage and enabling girls to fulfill their potential, 44% of girls in Nigeria are married before their 18th birthday and 18% are married before the age of 15.

It quoted a UNICEF report that “Nigeria has the third highest absolute number of child brides in the world – 3,538,000 – and the 11th highest prevalence rate of child marriage globally.

“Child marriage is most common in the North West and North East of Nigeria, where 68% and 57% of women aged 20-49 were married before their 18th birthday. Child marriage is particularly common among Nigeria’s poorest, rural households and the Hausa ethnic group.

“A 2017 World Bank study estimates that child marriage costs Nigeria USD7.6 billion in lost earnings and productivity every year.

“Child marriage is driven by gender inequality and the belief that girls are somehow inferior to boys. In Nigeria, child marriage is also driven by level of education.

“73% of Nigerian women with no formal education were married before 18, compared to only 9% who had completed higher education. Further education is almost impossible for some girls, who have little choice but to depend on their husbands for the rest of their lives.”

At the sidelines of the UNGA, Bio flanked by her husband President Julius Bio, spoke to “lift the lid of silence” taboo and stigma surrounding rape and early marriage in Sierra Leone and other parts of the continent.
Aided by an older sister, she took a flight out of her native Sierra Leone to the United Kingdom – without her father’s knowledge or permission. “I come from a family where girls are married at 12 years,” she recalled.

President Bio, responding to a question on how deeply set cultural mindsets could be changed, said it would take patience and persistence. “We have to leave some aspects of culture behind. We have to establish institutions and cascade our campaigns down across the entire country.”

Speaking, Clar Weah stressed that it was time to collectively say no to abuse. “We renew our commitment to create a safe world for our girls in Africa. We entreat all presidents and heads of states to join us,” she appealed.

Ermine Erdogan, First Lady of Turkey, who made a special appearance to support the event, said the key to the empowerment of women was education.

“There is no excuse for early marriage. The place for a school-going child is school,” she declared.

In his remarks, African Development Bank (ADB) President, Akinwumi Adesina, spoke out against all forms of early marriage and said the economic empowerment of women is a critical tool to end the vicious cycle of marginalization and gender imbalance.

“That’s why the Bank is raising $3 billion to support women,” Adesina said, referring to the Bank’s Affirmative Finance Action for Women In Africa (AFAWA) initiative.

“Early marriage is not only a human rights abuse it is an economic issue,” Rachel Yates, Executive Director of Girls Not Brides, said.

Other voices in support of the First Ladies included Djereje Wordofa, UNFA Deputy Executive Director, who said protection of girls and women and preventing abuse must become a national priority.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organisation, disclosed that it was a subject he dreaded but had to talk about. “Child marriage reinforces poverty. It is totally unacceptable. We must speak out against political, religious and social practices,” he said.
