Too many air passengers are ignorant. Just the way I overheard one saying loudly that it was better to fly in the daytime than in the night so the pilot could see properly. I nearly fell off my seat in laughter. The guy obviously does not know that aircraft are flown with instruments and pilots have to be instrument-rated to fly commercial airlines.

The statement is actually not flawed.
While technical advancement have made flying at night almost the same with flying during the daytime.
Night time still has some peculiar incidents and higher rates of turbulences particular during the winter, or when it's raining.

Bottom line is there's not much statistical evidence to say which time is safer. But an individual can make such submission regardless.
Not to mention emergencies are better handle at daytime.

It's just like saying going to the ATM is better during the day than at night. There's no data to prove this but one can conclude based on personal experience
