Business / Re: Jewellery Business And Barbing Saloon, Which Is Better? by DICKtator: 12:12am On Jan 24, 2017
star4ever:
Hi Nairalanders,

I will appreciate your candid advise on a business decision which I feel you may be of help to provide superior comments to enable me make informed decisions.

I am seriously considering setting up a business with the little money at my disposal. This decision has been a tough one in view of the fact that, I once set up a hair dressing saloon and recharge card/phone shop in the past but the business couldn't survive due poor management by my workers among other reasons.

I know this is not a very good time for importation or international business, however, I would like to start travelling to Dubai to buy jewelleries and sell. Part of what is driving this, is due to the nature of my work which entails meeting top government functionaries on a day to day basis. I want to use the network I have built over the years as my target. This means that I have a good client base considering their status and ability to patronize me. I am on paid employment and therefore do not have time for businesses that require 100% supervision. Based on the foregoing, I want to know how profitable the business is, the intricacies, the best approach to use for such a business and any other advise that can help a sister in this circumstance.

Secondly, following the collapse of my hair dressing saloon, I was strongly advised by friends to try barbing saloon which if run on commission basis will yield income and remain sustainable. But I am afraid to venture into this business because I don't want to loose money again especially, in this hard times.

Nonetheless, I have a strong conviction that gold selling if well coached will help a great deal to increase my financial base over time.

The following are the objectives of this starting a business:
1. to make additional income other than my monthly salary
2. to increase the money at hand rather than leave it in the bank without any attractive margin
3. sustainability
4. profitability

I await your comments, suggestions, opinions etc.

Thank you.

Set up a bathing saloon but before you do,

Draft a SWOT analysis
Identify areas of weaknesses you faced when you opened your hair dressing saloon and resolve how you would tackle them if you start a barbing saloon.(remember that they are kind of similar)
Your experience as a former hair dressing saloon owner should guide you when starting your barbing saloon.
Discuss with people that you know that are into the business (lool, I guess that was why you opened this thread!)
And above all, have a USP(unique selling point/proposition) that would attract and retain customers to your business.
I would only help you identify how you could tackle one issue you raised about your hair dressing saloon which may occur once you venture into barbing business too-the issue of employee mismanagement.
Yes,you cannot dedicate 100% of your time there,so you may not know what is happening. The solution? Get a CCTV. you can make them aware of this or may choose not to,the onus is on you. If they're aware, they would know that they're being watched(or assume) and may be of their best behavior.problem is kind of solved. If they're not aware they're being watched,(the better),you would be able to identify your loyal staff, the ones you would have to let go and so on..
I could go on and on but you would have to think for yourself.
Infact draw a flowchart with yes/no and you would be able to identify and tackle any challenges that may arise
In your business venture.
Goodluck

As for jewelry business,if you mean real gold and the likes, get ready to spend money on insurance and bad debt. Also make provision for bad debt (even court cases sef!!!)

Crime / Re: Robbery Incident As Captured On CCTV in Ikeja, Lagos (Video And Photos) by DICKtator: 10:47am On Jan 19, 2017
Wooow!!
He alighted from the SUV and crossed to the other side of the road to where the lady parked.
The SUV he alighted from cover him from the driver's side while the other SUV covered the rear of the victim's vehicle.
The speed at which he already opened her vehicle is alarming. You mean there was no one in front to see him struggling ,as he "jacked" the victim's vehicle?
After he completed the deed,he left in the other SUV.
Damn. This is crazy

He had a suit on. He was dressed "corporately"
Hmmmm
Isn't this obviously an insider's job?
The lady should go back to the bank and make a report, their CCTV should also be reviewed.perhaps the bank would even recognise the staff that took off for a break at that point in time.
She should also make a report at the police station.
This is damn too alarming

Romance / Re: Access Bank CEO Shares A Marriage Proposal Video That Took Place In A Branch by DICKtator: 2:56pm On Jan 18, 2017
Two lovers working in the same branch?

Or is it two lovers working in the same bank?

I know this issue has been discussed on NL before
But I thought it wasn't allowed in banks?
Maybe one of them would have to resign after they tie the nuptial knot.
You know bankers don't like it when they work with their spouses in the same bank/branch.

They claim there may be undue influence or nepotism at play but they fail to add that they like to f@#$& one another too

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Why Do Unemployed Nigerians Want A Job But Reject Marketing Job At All Cost? by DICKtator: 2:54pm On Jan 18, 2017
kaeforum:
It's just plain ignorance, marketing is the best job for any graduate, requires no special skills, there's free movement and freedom of execution.
You cant be a CEO or business owner if you re afraid of marketing.

All CEO's do marketing, its compulsory. cool

You really think communication skill isn't a special skill?
You really think prospecting, cold calling ,using FAB techniques are no special skills?
You owe all Marketing graduates an apology for typing that. And in reference to CEOs and what have you,I believe this thread has to do with those that marketing is their core competency ,like a full time job meaning that 100% of their time and skills are used in sealing deals(this is actually sales). While in most organization, everyone is referred to as a marketer (directly or indirectly),it is not, for instance the IT department, their area of core competence which would be used for appraisal purpose.

If I can meet a marketing target of 200 million or even meet half of my targets on a monthly basis, wouldn't it be logical for me to become an entrepreneur. Since I am that good at convincing people to part with their money, why not market a product that I know all the profit and commission would come to me and no one else?

The response was as a result of stupid questions and demands being asked by David Ade but I understand that Paul's racist REMARKS was unprofessional and was done out of anger because of the stupidity of David.

PAUL'S apology is not and will never be genuine because his apologies was made after he realised that the account is being monitored and he could be FIRED for his unprofessional conduct.

Please,I would be grateful if you could highlight David's stupidity from the conversation
I would love to see it from your point of view

@Op.... you need to be careful what you are asking for. You said your husband is a good looking guy.... when he dresses like an old man it takes away from his attractiveness and the swarm of young hot manhunting ladies swerve. Now if he dresses up to date.... the ladies would take notice and swarm him either for money or to give him honey..... are you prepared to handle this? ... and don't for a moment say he is not that kinda guy.... these roaming ladies can seduce snake sef.
The people who comment about his dress sense do not know him long enough.....since that's the way he always dressed... ignore them. If need to... you update his wardrobe... don't be waiting for him to. Some men are just like that... my bro no different.... they see absolutely nothing wrong as long as 1. their outfit is clean...2. ..no holes or rips or stains...3. ...they all fit and feel comfortable..... brown shoes, red trousers, green shirt... doesn't matter..... boxers has three holes... no big deal..who would know? Be careful what you ask for.
If you do insist..... holla at me.... only if you want him to dress like celebrity.

Hmmmmmm.........

This is so insightful and deep!!

Reverse psychology!!

I was going to type this but you beat me to it.

But to be frank, in Nigerian parlance, it is referred to as meat pie even though it is mince pie

Just like flip flop is referred to as slippers
