The Manchester United squad surprised young patients at three local hospitals today as they delivered festive gifts in the lead up to Christmas. Captain Wayne Rooney and vice-captain Michael Carrick spent time with youngsters at Francis House Children’s Hospice in Didsbury, which provides a home from home for families where they can receive professional care, support and friendship. Down the road at The Christie’s Palatine Treatment Centre, home to the teenage and young adult unit and haematology and transplant inpatient unit, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, David De Gea and Eric Bailly met those going through a difficult time during the festive period. The remainder of the first-team squad headed to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital which is the largest single-site children's hospital in the UK and provides specialist healthcare services for children and young people throughout the North West, as well as nationally and internationally. The players gave out a number of United-themed presents much to the delight of those forced to spend Christmas away from home. Paul Pogba, speaking at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, said, “Today we are just trying to make the kids smile and make them happy because they are having a hard time. We are lucky to be in good health so for us to be able to give the kids a little smile is special.” At Francis House, Wayne Rooney said, “It’s nice to come here; I think you can see how important it is not just for kids but the parents and the nurses who work so hard to make sure the kids are looked after really well. I think it’s good for us to come down and see everyone, the kids will remember this and it will give them something to smile about.” Juan Mata, who visited The Christie, added, “For us it’s just a little break in our day but for them it is such a great day. We all love to do this and see their smiles and to make them happier at least for one day at this difficult time, so we are very happy with what the club and Foundation do each year.” Fifteen-year-old Cameron, a patient on the oncology and haematology ward at Royal Manchester, was in awe of the players he met: “I’ve met Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini from Manchester United and it’s been amazing. It’s just unbelievable them coming to see me, I was star struck, it was really unexpected and it’s good of them to take time out to come and see people.” I was star struck, it was really unexpected and it’s good of the players to take time out to come and see people like me.Cameron, 15, from Blackpool http://www.mufoundation.org/en/News/Archive/2016/12/Hospital-visits.aspx

Horace Greeley once said, “The darkest hour in any man’s life is when he sits down to plan how to get money without earning it.” Your ambition is poor if it is all about making money! The poor chase money while the rich attract money. The right way to make money is not chasing it but attracting it. When the ambition of a man is chasing after money; wealth becomes elusive. The ravaging news of the new money spinning venture called “MMM” is now making unprecedented coverage across the country. Though I have nothing personal against it but I will like to start with a brief story of this ‘wealth Abracadabra ‘ and unveil the golden virtues that this wealth networking business is gradually destroying though unnoticed among the Nigerian Youths. MMM was founded in 1989 by three Russian - Sergey Mavrodi, his brother Vyacheslav Mavrodi, and Olga Melnikova. The name of the company was derived from the first letters (M) of the three founders’ surnames, thus MMM. The company went into varying form of ventures and started attracting money from private investors, promising annual returns of up to one thousand per cent. Subsequently, the company was accused of tax evasion by the Russian authorities thereby grounding their operations. After several unsuccessful attempts at diversification, it successfully turned into a Ponzi scheme in 1994. MMM grew rapidly. In February 1994, the company reported dividends of 1,000%, and started an aggressive TV ad campaign. Since the shares were not quoted on any stock exchange and the company itself determined the share price, it maintained a steady price growth of thousands of per cent annually, leading the public to believe its shares were a safe and profitable investment. However, it became bankrupt in 1997 due to series of tax issues and unrealistic promises of excessively high returns (up to 200 per cent and even more, in some cases). Sergey Mavrodi was arrested in 2003 and convicted of fraud in 2007 with a four and a half years prison sentence. In 2011, MMM rebranded itself and continued to spread to different parts of the world. They landed in South Africa in 2015, promising a 30 per cent monthly return. They saw potentials in Nigeria and penetrated the Nigerian market fully early in 2016(at about the same period they were banned in China). The outgoing President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, said, “Focusing your life solely on making money shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. And it will leave you unfulfilled.” The first thing that MMM is gradually encroaching upon in the Nigerian youths is the issue of ‘purpose’. When a man pursues purpose; fulfilment is inevitable. When a man pursues money, then fulfilment will always be elusive. It is only people that are driven by purpose that will ultimately be relevant in life. The pursuit of money alone will always make you inconspicuous in the crowd. In his best-selling book, “The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?”, Rick Warren summarily emphasized that the purpose of life is simply to live a life of purpose. When a man pursues purpose, money comes ultimately. The great Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful”. The second thing that MMM is gradually destroying among the youths is their problem solving abilities. Most of the richest people in the world were just trying to solve a problem and ended up becoming the richest. Mike Murdock said, ‘’money is the reward you get for solving someone’s problem’’. It is fraud when you plan to get money without solving a problem! Aliko Dangote, the richest man in Africa said, ‘’every morning when I wake up, I make up my mind to solve as many problems, before returning home.’’ Dangote was passionate about solving problems and undoubtedly became the richest in Africa. Bill Gates, who has remained the world’s richest man for several years is a philanthropist committed to giving 95% of his fortune to charity. It is not unusual that the man noted for solving most of the software problems in the world eventually became the richest. Money has a path; it will always flow to the direction where problems are solved. The world of today is more effective just by looking through Bill Gates’ windows! The next danger of MMM is that it directly or indirectly kills initiatives and ideas. Napoleon Hill said, ‘’ideas are the beginning points of all fortunes”. Personally, I believe that ideas are ‘wealth’ in waiting. There is no man that is poor, everyman is rich in something; the rich are rich in ideas while the poor are rich in ignorance! Pursue ideas and not money. Another damaging effect of MMM is that it is gradually destroying work ethics in the youths. The ‘fever’ of MMM will one day go, just like those of pennywise of the past. The reality is that all net-working wealth ventures ultimately have their peak periods; it is the early birds that catch the fattest worms. I am saying this to anybody that cares to listen: MMM is not sustainable. The truth is that some people will find it very hard to return back to their work ethic, simply because MMM has brought into them, the complacency and redundancy factor. The Nigerian Stock Exchange Essay Competition for this year was actually designed around making wise investment decisions. The topic of the essay: “What is the biggest obstacle to saving and investing money and how can The Nigerian Stock Exchange help?” In this time of economic recession, Nigerians need to be educated on the importance of financial frugality, delayed gratification and wise investment decisions, the Nigerian Stock Exchange needs to design a massive awareness initiative to educate Nigerians on the importance of making wise investment decisions. The NSE must not keep quiet on the issue of MMM. It was a gloomy story some few days ago when an MMM participant and final year student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, committed suicide in the most intriguing way. The deceased left a note behind where he apologised to his family for misplacing his priorities. The issue of young people running after money without any definite and concrete plans to add value to the world is appalling. The Nigerian youth should be a solution and not a problem in the contemporary Nigeria. Let us stop the ‘mad’ and ‘demented’ rush after money; let us proffer solutions to problems and earn money credibly. Work hard towards evolving an idea that will solve problems and not just make money the object of your pursuit. Pursue ‘meaning’, value and purpose. To the Nigerian youths; I say, ‘’we are the solution that Nigeria is waiting for" Note: The Bible says in Proverbs 15:27 [27] - He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live. |

NOTICE OF DATA BREACH Dear xxxxxxxx, We are writing to inform you about a data security issue that may involve your Yahoo account information. We have taken steps to secure your account and are working closely with law enforcement. What Happened? Law enforcement provided Yahoo in November 2016 with data files that a third party claimed was Yahoo user data. We analyzed this data with the assistance of outside forensic experts and found that it appears to be Yahoo user data. Based on further analysis of this data by the forensic experts, we believe an unauthorized third party, in August 2013, stole data associated with a broader set of user accounts, including yours. We have not been able to identify the intrusion associated with this theft. We believe this incident is likely distinct from the incident we disclosed on September 22, 2016. What Information Was Involved? The stolen user account information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (using MD5) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers. Not all of these data elements may have been present for your account. The investigation indicates that the stolen information did not include passwords in clear text, payment card data, or bank account information. Payment card data and bank account information are not stored in the system we believe was affected. What We Are Doing We are taking action to protect our users: We are requiring potentially affected users to change their passwords. We invalidated unencrypted security questions and answers so that they cannot be used to access an account. We continuously enhance our safeguards and systems that detect and prevent unauthorized access to user accounts. What You Can Do We encourage you to follow these security recommendations: Change your passwords and security questions and answers for any other accounts on which you used the same or similar information used for your Yahoo account.Review all of your accounts for suspicious activity.Be cautious of any unsolicited communications that ask for your personal information or refer you to a web page asking for personal information.Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails. Additionally, please consider using Yahoo Account Key, a simple authentication tool that eliminates the need to use a password on Yahoo altogether. For More Information For more information about this issue and our security resources, please visit the Yahoo Security Issues FAQs page available at https://yahoo.com/security-update. Protecting your information is important to us and we work continuously to strengthen our defenses. Sincerely, Bob Lord Chief Information Security Officer Yahoo That was the message I received from Yahoo. Hence, if you are affected, there's need for you to alter your password, security questions and answers for any other accounts on which you used the same information. |
Yahoo has discovered a three-year old security breach that enabled a hacker to compromise more than 1 billion user accounts, breaking the company's own humiliating record for the biggest security breach in history. The digital heist disclosed on Wednesday occurred in August 2013, more than a year before a separate hack that Yahoo announced nearly three months ago. That breach affected at least 500 million users, which had been the most far-reaching hack until the latest revelation. "Simply everyone that has a Yahoo account should be concerned," Robert Siciliano, a US-based security analyst, told Al Jazeera. "Once a criminal hacker has access to your email, that is a portal to reset the passwords for all of your critical accounts, which that Yahoo account is associated with." Both lapses occurred during the reign of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, a once-lauded leader who found herself unable to turn around the company in the four years since her arrival. Earlier this year, Yahoo agreed to sell its digital operations to Verizon Communications for $4.8bn - a deal that may now be imperiled by the hacking revelations. Yahoo didn't say if it believes the same hacker might have pulled off two separate attacks. The Sunnyvale, California, company blamed the late 2014 attack on a hacker affiliated with an unidentified foreign government, but said it hasn't been able to identify the source behind the 2013 intrusion. Yahoo: Users need not worry Yahoo has more than a billion monthly active users, although some have multiple accounts and others have none at all. An unknown number of accounts were affected by both hacks. In both attacks, the stolen information included names, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates and security questions and answers. The company says it believes bank-account information and payment-card data were not affected. But hackers also apparently stole passwords in both attacks. Technically, those passwords should be secure; Yahoo said they were scrambled twice - once by encryption and once by another technique called hashing. But hackers have become adept at cracking secured passwords by assembling huge dictionaries of similarly scrambled phrases and matching them against stolen password databases. That could mean trouble for any users who reused their Yahoo password for other online accounts. Yahoo is requiring users to change their passwords and invalidating security questions so they can't be used to hack into accounts. (You may get a reprieve if you've changed your password and questions since September.) Security experts said the 2013 attack was likely the work of a foreign government fishing for information about specific people. One big tell: It doesn't appear that much personal data from Yahoo accounts has been posted for sale online, meaning the hack probably wasn't the work of ordinary criminals. That means most Yahoo users probably don't have anything to worry about, said JJ Thompson, CEO of Rook Security. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/12/yahoo-suffers-world-biggest-hack-1-billion-users-161215034225047.html

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the declaration of Magnus Abe by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as winner of Rivers South East Senatorial District. The party declared that “The whole world know that elections did not take place in the Rivers South East Senatorial District.” It also has condemned in strong terms, the delay by INEC in releasing the remaining collated results of the just concluded Rivers State Re-Run Elections. The party alleged that INEC was withholding the results in cohort with security agencies to pave way for the APC to manipulate the outcome of the Elections. A statement by the spokesman of the Makarfi-led PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said “The only result that has been released which declared Magnus Abe of the APC Winner, is an unprecended massive manipulation of the electoral process in active connivance with the security agencies. “The whole world know that elections did not take place in the Rivers South East Senatorial District. “We therefore reject the declaration of Magnus Abe with the fabricated results, and demand INEC to conduct election in that Constituency. We promise to avail ourselves every opportunity to seek redress on this matter in the interest of democracy and that of the constituents who are denied their right to vote.” The party further listed results that are being withheld as follows: Rivers West and East Senatorial Districts, Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency and Andoni State House of Assembly Constituency. It added “We have the results declared at the various polling units which show that, Senator George Abiye Sekibo of the PDP won the Rivers East Senatorial District while Senator Osinakachukwu Ideozu also of the PDP won the Rivers West Senatorial District, respectively. “Equally, we make bold to state that Hon. Abiante and Ikunyi Ibani both of the PDP won their respective elections into Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency and Andoni State Constituency, respectively. “INEC is currently witholding these results in cohort with security agencies to pave way for the APC to manipulate the outcome of the Elections. We urge INEC to immediately release the affected results intact. Anything short of this is unacceptable and the INEC, security agencies and the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi should be held responsible in whatever manner the people of Rivers State decide to react for robbing them of their votes. “We again condemn in totality, the adverse role of the Nigerian Army, the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other security agencies during this Re-run Elections in Rivers State. It was a nightmare and a complete reversal of their constitutional mandates of safeguarding the territorial integrity of the Country and the protection of lives and properties. There are incontrovertible evidences that the security agencies worked for the APC against the interest of the Rivers people. They followed the directives of the APC Chairman, John Oyegun and Governor Ganduje of Kano State during the Mega Rally of the APC. They killed, they maimed, they harrased all in the desperate need to help the APC win at all cost. Very sad! “It is trite that the Army dishonorably left their primary assignments and worked assiduously with INEC in collusion with the APC leaders in Rivers State led by the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi and mindlessly wrote the results that produced Senator Magnus Abe in Rivers South-East Senatorial District. This action depicts sheer rape on democracy. “It is no gainsaying that this Re-run Elections in Rivers State was not only a contest between political parties but mostly the PDP in contest with the Army, the Police, the INEC, the APC, and the Federal Government of Nigeria represented by the Honourable Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi and Co. “We therefore call on all Nigerians to rise up to this challenge and stop the Federal Government, the APC and INEC from organizing undemocratic elections as witnessed in most part of Rivers State and other previous elections in the Country since the assumption of this government. If Nigerian elections travesty continues, it’s goodnight to democracy. “Finally, we once again call on the international community to intervene to save our democracy from total collapse. The consequences of this electoral inpunity on the part of the APC administration has both national and International ramifications. International community must not remain silent in the face of this onslaught on Nigerian democracy.” http://leadership.ng/news/563633/rivers-re-run-elections-makarfis-pdp-rejects-magnus-abes-victory |

The two foolish sides of Rivers State election: Those who allow themselves to be killed because of election. Those who killed others because of election. |
After the tears have dried. The Akwa Ibom State government should get to the root cause of the collapse of the Church building. Reports have it that the building was renovated and upgraded. Who were the engineers involved? Who were the architects involved? Were those from the Akwa Ibom State Government in charge of giving approvals for building upgrading and building contacted? Were there sharp practices involved that caused the collapse? Were substandard products used in the construction of the building? Thousands of years ago, a big building collapsed in the land of the Philistine, at least we know why it collapsed. As Samson pushed down the pillars of the building. This is 2016 and we must know why that building collapsed and any mortal who is found culpable should face the full weight of the law. #AkwaIbomMourns |

The issue of gaps in employment history is a thorny one, and one that comes up all the time in terms of the overall picture your resume provides. When a candidate is applying for a job, a large unexplained gap in their employment history is sometimes a showstopper. And why is that? Why do employers avoid hiring job seekers who have been out of work for a while? Is it the real reason why some candidates can't find a job for a long time? Hear are some other harsh realities jobseekers must face: Reality #1 – Candidate Volume Too many job seekers assume they are the best candidate for every job they apply for. Wrong! First of all, in most cases, you are one of a hundred (or hundreds) of applicants. Many are going to be equally qualified; some are likely to be more qualified. Your resume or online submission is likely to be scanned for key words related to accomplishments, skills, and/or education. You may be rejected for a reason completely unrelated to “job gaps” on your resume. Given the high volume of resumes that are screened out by automated searches, your “job gap” could easily be an unknown factor. Reality #2 – Resume Quality Whether or not the decision on your application is affected by candidate volume, the quality of your resume is very likely to be a determining factor. A hiring manager or recruiter’s job is to very quickly sort a high volume of resumes into some type of grading, often a simple A-B-C rating. Research on this has shown that 80-90% of resumes end in the “B” pile, e.g., because of an obvious experience mismatch, or in the “C” pile, e.g., because of a poor quality resume. I’ve been receiving resumes almost daily for review, and more than 90% are immediate “C” pile because of boring, “facts only” descriptions of experience, small font size, tiny margins, or completely irrelevant information. Your resume may be missing the “A” pile for nothing related to your “job gaps.” In today’s competitive market, only “A” resumes are likely to survive. Reality #3 – Interview Quality Here’s one possibility where a candidate’s “job gap” may be directly responsible for rejection – but not because of the “job gap” itself. Interviewing several candidates, I’ve noted that “job gaps” are often explained very poorly: - “Let me tell you about the jerk who ran that department.” - “That company was so poorly managed…” - “I just got burned out and decided to take a few months off.” In today’s working world, the majority of HR professionals and hiring managers are aware that individuals quit jobs, are laid off, or have jobs eliminated for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with their track record of accomplishments. However, if a candidate focuses on almost any variation of a “not my fault” explanation, it is not the “job gap” that’s hurting. The broader issue of interview preparation is relevant here too. If a candidate is poorly prepared to answer questions about their accomplishments, e.g. answers that are too short or too long, then it is very likely the candidate is not scoring well on the interview – whether or not there are “job gaps.” Many organizations today are placing a significant emphasis on “fit.” Interviewers are attempting to measure how well a candidate fits the organization’s culture. For some organizations, it is considered the most important factor. A candidate with a “job gap” may have the right skills and accomplishment, the right education – and yet again, be judged as not as qualified compared to other candidates based on perceived “fit.” There’s a final key point here – related to the interview. If a candidate has been granted an interview, it means the “job gap” did not affect that choice for initial screening or the resume review. So it is much more likely it is one of the other problems identified above. I’ll vote for poor interview preparation and lack of “practice, practice, practice” in most cases. Reality #4 – Background/Social Media Check A recent study showed that 94% of company’s used LinkedIn as part of their recruiting process. Organizations routinely use outside agencies to perform background and reference checks. There are many possibilities here for turning a positive interview into a rejection. Here’s an obvious one: What did your supervisor at the company that downsized you say about your performance? Alternatively, how is the “job gap” explained on your LinkedIn profile? We do believe that some candidates are rejected for an interview or a job just because of “job gaps.” However, the assertion that it is wrong for a dozen unknown reasons is a poor argument when there is likely a much different reason for the rejection. If a candidate has a strong resume, prepared and practiced answers to interview questions – including about the “job gap” – and has carefully addressed their social media presence, it won’t be the “job gap” that’s preventing them from receiving an offer. http://job.naij.com/tips-4+Harsh+Realities+Job+Seekers+Must+Face+-517?ts=r_email&r_id=13508&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=applicant&utm_content=article&utm_campaign=tips_daily

Misplaced priority. |
The United Nations has warned that at least, 5.1 million Nigerians in the Northeast region may die in 2017 from starvation. The Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator of United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affiars (OCHA), Peter Lundberg said this at the launch of the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan for Nigeria's northeast region in Abuja. “A projected 5.1 million people will face serious food shortages as the conflict and risk of unexploded improvised devices prevented farmers planting for a third year in a row, causing a major food crisis," he revealed. He said $1billion was needed in 2017 to address the needs of those in crisis in the three most affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. "During the course of 2016 as the Nigerian Armed Forces pushed back Boko Haram held areas, the scale of human suffering became more apparent and humanitarian community scaled up the responses. While calling on donours to provide funds, Lundberg noted that the “narrative on this humanitarian crisis can no longer be ignored and we are appealing to the international community to help us prevent the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians over the coming 12 months. “This is the largest crisis on the African continent and I am confident that with the support of the international community and the private sector, we can begin to bring hope to the people of the northeast." Speaking also, the Nigerian Minister of State for Ministry of Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed said the scale of destruction and the new skills required to ensure a return to narmalcy, requires unprecedented levels of patnership between the international humanitarian community and government of Nigeria coming together. While commending the international community for appealing for resources to meet the lifesaving needs of nearly 7 million people in 2017, she added that Nigeria "will continue to demostrate strong commitment to working together with international communities." "We will endeavor to provide an environment in which humanitarians will be able to undertake priority activities. "The government will continue to put funding into jointly prioritized sectoral activities so that there will be no gaps in the humanitarian reponse," Ahmed noted. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/un-5-1-million-nigerians-may-die-of-hunger-in-2017/174456.html#AmI1XiveKy1WkgqA.99

Dear Girls, As you are slaying on Facebook, Instagram and snapchat, Hope you are slaying in academics, businesses, kitchen, prayers and manners too? Remember marriage isn't all about how good you are in bed, how beautiful you are or how much you are worth. The question is "Do you have manners? Can you manage a home or contribute to your home positively as a wife and a mother? Can you cook very well and make your kids and husband look forward to each of your meals? Are you a prayer warrior? In fact, do you even fear God? Are you responsible? Do you respect yourself and try to be of good conduct at all times? Do you even have sense at all? You want a 26yrs old with no baby mama, got a house and car but are jobless. Are you smoking elephant grass in an uncompleted building? A lot of you depend and rely on your beauty, fat Ass and huge titties for survival. Are you any different from the prostitute that sells her vagina for a living? None of you wants to date a regular guy anymore that earns a minimum wage because they can't keep up with your high standards and that's why 80% of you are either married or dating a fraudster. It's time you all see the past your cute face and hour glass shape cos they too will diminish and do something even your parents would be proud of instead of just being a basic Bitch. Always pray and seek guidance from the Lord before making decisions in life, and remember that He may not always give you an answer immediately. However, if you remain consistent in seeking Him, He will show you what to do. May God bless their union. |

Work and a career are an important part of many of our lives, from helping us to pay the bills to giving us a sense of purpose. However, it’s important to remember that work is just a part of our lives. While it may feed into many aspects of life, it’s important to find a balance that gives us some time away from the stresses of the office to enjoy other aspects of our personal lives. What is a work/life balance? A work/life balance varies from person to person. However, it’s essentially the amount of time and focus a person gives their work versus other aspects of their life Of course everyone’s priorities change depending on a range of factors. For example, age can make your balance very different. If you’re in your twenties or thirties, you may have strong commitments to building a family life whilst, at the same time, focus on growing your career. If you’re in your fifties and sixties, on the other hand, your focus may be on more personally meaningful and purposeful activities, which may not have been present earlier in life. Whatever you do to establish your work/life balance, it’s vital to create it and keep to it whenever possible. Why do I need it? In the current economic climate, where the pressures to work harder than ever are constant, the need to unwind from work can be crucial. It’s human nature to want to feel in control of the conditions that affect your life, and not being able to can prompt a range of negative reactions including: Work burn out: A person who’s worked too long and too hard will often simply burn themselves out, both personally and professionally. This can potentially cause problems with your employer should they see you display a lack of interest, a short temper or difficulty with others. This issue could prove costly to you, as it could lead to disciplinary action or, in the worst case, even dismissal. Stress: A person who doesn’t achieve a satisfying work/life balance can end up generating extra stress in their life. As we all know, stress, when allowed to linger, often causes side effects that can lead to health issues and personal distress. These conditions can take their toll on any individual and may end up having physical impact, causing a break down in relationships and impeding work performance. In other words, a lack of balance will create problems that can be costly physically, emotionally and financially. How can I achieve a better work/life balance? The first step to achieving a better work/life balance is to think about the demands on your current professional and personal life. Do you ever find yourself with time to yourself? Maybe you have too much free time. Or none at all. Of course these considerations will vary for every individual. Regardless, you should make a conscious effort to establish your own set of rules that allow you to strike the right balance between work and life. Ways to do this include: - Creating realistic boundaries between work and non-work items - Prioritising tasks and events within both - Set time aside for you: schedule an activity in your free time or block out a time period that’s for you to relax and enjoy yourself – it can even be as simple as not checking work emails when you’re at home - Asking friends and family if they feel you dedicate too much time to one or the other. What are the benefits of work-life balance? Your health and wellbeing will improve Overworking isn’t just putting you at risk of being a ‘very dull boy/girl’ – it could also be affecting your health. In fact, if you’re sacrificing too much of your time for the sake of work, it won’t take long to start feeling the consequences – whether it’s through increased stress, constant bouts of illnesses due to a weakened immune system, or non-stop exhaustion. That doesn’t mean you have to stop working hard though. Many professions require a lot of time and effort, and sometimes large amounts of downtime just isn’t possible if you’re determined to do well. But it’s all about finding that balance. By recognising your own individual triggers and understanding when you’re overdoing it, you’ll be able to recognise the early warning signs before you start burning out. You’ll be more productive Having a healthy work-life balance isn’t just essential to your well-being – it also boosts your productivity. From finally getting around to redecorating the house because you switched off your work phone for the weekend, to completing a work task you’ve been stuck on for weeks after being able to go back to it with a fresh mindset – creating a good balance between your work life and your personal life will allow you to be more productive in both areas. And work-life balance doesn’t always refer to a solid line between work and play. Whether it’s by working from home when you need quiet space for a project, or dedicating time to group brainstorm sessions where collaboration is necessary – creating your own balance between team work and head-down work is equally essential to achieve productivity in all aspects of your job. You’ll have more ‘you time’ It’s easy to make excuses when you rarely get free time. And whether your devotion to overtime has meant you still haven’t taken that photography course you’ve been interested in for months, or working weekends has caused you to miss 99% of your yoga classes – you shouldn’t have to sacrifice that much of yourself to do a good job. After all, work isn’t the only place you can learn and develop – and from quantifying your skillset with a qualification, to learning a new language, taking up a hobby, or even just reading a book – making the most of your time will add some much needed variation – and enjoyment – into your life. So not only will improving your work-life balance give you more control over what you do, you’ll also be able to use your dedicated ‘you time’ to do things you’ve been putting off for years. You’ll stop missing out Those who overwork have one thing in common – and that’s that everything in their lives except work probably isn’t going as well as it could. Common signs and symptoms include: always being the guy/girl who misses the best social gathering of the week, their anniversary, their child’s first word, or a really funny ‘you just had to be there’ moment – possibly involving their housemate, a dishwasher, and a family sized tub of vanilla yoghurt. But we digress… Whether it’s by sticking to a nightly dinner with your partner or a weekly film night with your best friend, there’s always time to actually have a life outside of work. Remember: achieving a good work-life balance often comes down to your own ability to prioritise according to what’s most important to you. http://job.naij.com/tips-How+to+Achieve+a+Work+Life+Balance-516?ts=r_email&r_id=13354&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=applicant&utm_content=article&utm_campaign=tips_daily

Sometimes, I am really at a lost as to whose interest the current government is serving under the current recession. They will take you 10 steps forward today and 50 steps backward tomorrow, the kinda situation similar to the marriage described by Toke Makinwa in her book titled, "On Becoming." The normal thing a government does under a recessed economy is to cushion its impact on the lower and middle class and make it work more for them. It is the rich and super rich that you tax more to get the funds that you need to develop infrastructure and re-activate the economy. But the way the current government has done is to make life more difficult for the poor and middle class, the very people who made their coming into power possible. It is like this government after securing the 'Change' marriage with Nigerians, went outside and engaged in infidelity, caught STI and it is now giving Nigerians STI economic policies. The prices of essential commodities are virtually out of the reach of the lower class. The middle class are being suffocated by some badly conceived socio-economic policies. In a bid to cure the STI and keep body and soul together, Nigerians now resort to MMM. Shouldn't this be enough worry for the government that said it cares for the people? And now the communications minister, Adebayo Shittu said that the government will not go back on the policy to tax phone calls and text messages. What happened to the tax I have been paying with little to show for it? Why should you tax me more to develop the infrastructure in the communication industry? Why should you tax me to make more money for the operators in the industry? Forget about any workshop or enlightenment campaign. Nigerians are hurt already and any explanation or justification can not work. Kole werk mhen! This distribution of STI economic policies at will has to stop ASAP. Mr. communication minister, if you are looking for more money to develop the communication industry, tell the federal government to work towards scrapping of the National Assembly. You will make a lot of savings from this. Mr. Minister, you can also rejig the policy and instead make the operators commit a percentage of their earnings towards developing the communication industry. After all, it is their industry and they make a lot of profit from it. |
