True but some people do it for genuine reasons. I quoted her because I wanted to keep it for future reference for myself. Funny enough before I posted it, I wanted to add my reason for quoting it but decided otherwise.

Haha he calls me the wifebot so he's husbot grin

We specifically went to Financial Advisor and a tax accountant. The trust wasn't even something we considered until we started discussing the structure for the development (ie hold in own name, in a ltd co, trust etc). They were able to break down the tax implications (personal income tax, CGT, IHT, corporate income tax) and for future succession planning especially as we don't want the children falling out over who gets what. Then future planning re- divorce entered the matter.

The tax accountant set up the trust, then a lawyer (with trust experience) drafted the deeds/clauses and the accountant registered the trust. The first question we were asked was if we wanted our assets to be dispersed at our deaths. The accountants will run the trust in perpetuity so they are corporate trustees of the trust. Because we will also be paying tax in 2 countries, we had to go for proper specialised advice that covers both countries. Tax in UK is a killer sha. Inheritance tax alone is 40% of your estate if your financial affairs are not properly set up.

Pension and wealth planning for the future - very long read.

To access full pensions, we have to pay 35 years of national insurance to access the full state pension in the UK and in New Zealand, a naturalised Kiwi aka us has to pay at least 10 years of income tax. It means we can't access the full state pension in both countries.
In both places, I doubt if we could live on the pension anyway even if we qualified for it. The full UK pension is about £7k a year so £14k for both of us. Yes, you could potentially access other benefits, but it means from age 65 for women and 67 for men, you’ll be living on approx. £1k a month unless you have savings to draw on. If you have savings of more than £16k, you also can’t access any state benefits either. So we have been planning for retirement.

We have a Global Vanguard All Shares account (the name has changed over the years) - managed by Henderson Securities. We've had it jointly for more than 12 years (husbot for much longer) and have dipped into it sometimes (mainly to pay for IVF). We haven't touched it for years now and the funds have grown exponentially. If we continue paying into it consistently, we should have about £600k worth of shares (yay compound interest) by the time I'm 55 and husbot is 52. To give an idea, we've always paid a minimum of £150 each monthly into it since 2010. Henderson does the investing and taxes on our behalf. We haven't bothered to check what they invest it in, but we picked an aggressive growth fund for a long time and that really paid off (hence using the profits for IVF). Now it's in a mid-range growth fund and will remain there. We have upped our monthly minimum payments to £250 each a month now because we can afford to do so. The SOA comes every March, but we don’t check it or even look at it beyond seeing how much is there when the SOA comes.

In New Zealand - we pay into the government Kiwisaver scheme (pension scheme). I contribute 3% of my earnings and husbot contributes 5% of his earnings, the government contributes $521 every year. We can withdraw our Kiwisaver once we've been out of NZ for 12 months (6 years of payments), so we plan to withdraw it and dump it into Henderson when we leave.
Onto tangible assets – We have property in both countries. I sold my house in 9ja once I realised it was an albatross and put all the funds into a UK purchase. Our UK family home although rented out is on a full repayment mortgage. Thanks to the current property boom (which can also go bust!) we have some substantial equity in it. We also have other BTLs on interest only mortgages. We can always sell one to clear off the mortgage on the family home if needed.

The move to New Zealand has been the best thing for us financially. I have no employer loyalty. No one goes into education to make money as the pay is poor compared to the level of work and qualifications involved. I often jump ship every 2 years because that's the only way I can increase my wages. Wages in education are much higher in NZ than in the UK which is weird (5m v 67m) but good for me!
Anyhow, when we moved to NZ, we took opportunity of the higher wages and saved and saved and saved but buying a house seemed out of our reach. Then we met another couple who seemed to have the same values as us (family, financial, moral you name it). We pooled our resources and we bought a house in our name (we bought first because we had higher incomes and better credit). With property values going crazy, we within 6 months refinanced that property and gifted the cash to this family (basically paid them back their initial contribution and extra) so they bought one too in their name. They then refinanced and gifted us the cash and we bought another in our names.
Because we want to exponentially grow the money, we are demolishing the first house to build 5 new ones and then leverage that to give them enough to buy a 2nd property for themselves. They can choose to develop or hold or sell but we will have both walked away with 2 initial properties each.

It does mean we're financially tight until we finish the build March/ April 2023 (build starts in Oct 2022) but it's for our future financial security so we're totally happy to have a few tight years. It also means I can't help my extended family as much as I used to and boy! am I hearing about it! I've thoroughly enjoyed the consent and planning process for the development. We now have land use consent ad have just applied for building consent. It has been stressful and a huge expenditure but also a big learning curve. I almost decided to retrain as surveyor last year when we got the engineering bill . When the houses are completed, it'll be leased to Housing New Zealand on a 5 year repairing lease. The income from the 5 after tax is about the same as my before tax income (imagine fa) so we know we can comfortably live on that should shit hit the fan workwise.

Our current NZ home was bought with retirement in mind. We went for the biggest house on a large land. We also deliberately bought in a medium density zone. Basically, we can build up to 6 four bedroom houses on the land if we demolish the existing house. If we decide not to retire in New Zealand, then that is what we would do in about 7 years’ time. If we choose to retire in NZ (I seriously doubt it) then we'll sell the UK family home and pay off the mortgage on the NZ one. It has bedrooms and a full bathroom downstairs and is disabled friendly – no stairs to access the whole of the ground floor. I have no intention of going into a nursing or care home.

Shareswise - we've now opened targeted growth fund accounts for the children with Lansdown Hargreaves. We pay £100 a month into each child's account. They will get full access at 18. Hopefully, they can use that to pay uni fees, supplement apprenticeship wages, down payment on a house or even go traveling before uni/ work starts.

We have also created a family trust. I look at the truly wealthy and what they have for going for them is generational wealth and good financial planning. In my family, I'm the first to be in a position to actually start building generational wealth. The trust will hopefully go on forever as it's for the direct progeny of my husbot and his siblings (both his siblings have no children and want none) and me and my siblings so it means my nephews and nieces will get payments annually out of it once they hit 21 but their parents can’t access any of the funds. We've currently set it so it can only be dissolved by a court and no beneficiaries can sell assets out of it including us once the asset has been placed in it.

2 reasons we have done this – divorce/ separation for us or our children. Even though we all hope to remain married till death, the truth is that divorce and remarriage happens. The trust is set up to protect the financial interests of all beneficiaries. If either of us divorces, we will continue to be paid out of it. Should any of us re-marry, the spouse will not be able to access any funds from the trust. Same with the children. Stats also show that first generation immigrants usually create the biggest wealth and subsequent generations waste the accumulated wealth. It is very likely that our children will not have the kind of drive we have because they have been born into or have lived in plenty enough to be happy with state handouts in the future. Therefore, they might actually see us as a burden as we grow older and infirm.

So hopefully at retirement, the trust can top up our pension but also ensure we remain at home till end of life and not be a burden on the children.

This is not financial advice. Just sharing what we have done.
Thank you very much for this insightful post.
On the trust, is it something you setup with a lawyer or did it come with the investment you chose? My insurance offered me some kind of trust for my life insurance but it's not quite the same as what you described. Please do you have links I can read up on how to do this or can you share, if you don't mind.
On a lighter note, why husbot? is it because your wish is his command? grin I am asking because I want to know if I am one too to madam grin

Family / Re: "How A Little Girl Almost Ruined My Life" by dustydee: 7:20pm On Apr 28, 2022
Nikkganc08:
Mine was a sad tale but a bit different

My parents had 5 kids ( four boys and a girl)

The sad tale happened around when I was in primary 1.

My Grandma heard a story of how a child put his fingers in her sisters genital. The first thing that came to her mind was to rush down to my mums house to break d news. She just believed that we've been doing same.

Somehow, she came and convinced my mum that we all ( the four of us) have been putting our finger in our sisters anus.

As at then, our eldest brother was still in either primary 4 or 5 (I'm the third child).

My Grandma and mum brought us all out in d parlour and gave us all serious flogging without telling us what was wrong.

After d first batch of torture, we were all crying already. That was when she announced that we have been putting our fingers in her anus.

Pls before u judge me, note that at such age, I had ZERO IDEA of what putting hands in someone's anus meant.

My sister was called to confess.
She shouldn't be more than 2 years then.

They asked her...

Did xxxx put his hand in ur bum bum?
She'll Nod her head in affirmation.

Did yyyy put his hand in ur bum bum?
She'll Nod again.

Will u eat human head? She'll nod
Will u drink urine? She'll Nod

Anything u say, She'll nod.

Mum didn't care about her foolish nodding. They just wanted her to confirm that we all put fingers there.

Well..., after several hours or torture , the eldest two insisted that they've never done such before (because they were a bit matured and knowledgeable then). They were spared.

I tried same but more beating was added.

Mum stripped me and d last son naked and flogged us more .

She said, 'tell me d truth, I'll leave u'

We both said we r innocent.

More slaps, flogging and hours of kneeling down where served to us.

Frog jumping and 'no food' threats were added.
Followed by no more school fees.
And finally, that they'd come to our school and make sure we'll be called out and flogged in front of everyone during morning assembly.

She kept on saying " tell me d truth and I'd leave u".

Finally , we had to admit to d story so that mum would spare us.

Lol....!!!

That was when d real beating started. Its a long story though.

She told all our relatives about how we've been putting our fingers in our little sisters anus.

She won't let our sister play or stay with us.
She'd just shout 'remove her from there before xxxx and yyyy (name withheld) would start fingering her.

She bought more pants for her (the BIG ones) plus some stuffs that is blackish and looks like boxers (don't know d name but women wear it alot). She must were pant, that black boxers, and a hose at same time before putting on her blouse.

Followed by tutorials for her to shout and report us to mum any day we touch her pant again. Lol...!!!

Whenever mum is bored, she'll just call d both of us, strip us naked, kneel us down , then flog us as much as she wanted.

Followed by questions like, "when was d last time u put fingers in ur sisters bum bum? ".
"Is it yesterday? Last week? today? "

If u don't pick anyone, She'll pick one for u.
Maybe, she'd say d last time u did it was yesterday.

Whenever grandma feels bored , she'd come to our house, strip us naked and start her own flogging.

I'm almost 30 years now.
I'm a non-virgin.
I might have done stuffs with my female friends.

But d truth remains this...
As kids, we were tortured for what we knew nothing about.

Something I had no idea of what it meant.

Someday, maybe this week, I'd call my sister and mum together, she has to confess whether she was fingered or not.

And mum MUST apologize for d unnecessary torture.
Grandma is dead. So, let's allow her to rest in peace

If my sister decides to accuse me , then we MUST get a native doctor to fish out d truth.

I won't let such heavy accusation slide again without repercussions
Your sister will not remember. She was too young then. Your issue is with your mum. I hope you are doing fine now.

Haha yeah one less tax payer. I considered getting lawyers to try again, but they said that I’ll need to be in the country for another 5 years with the route I’ll take. Been here 7 years now, I’m not interested in being classed a temporary for another 5 years lol. I can’t keep being used for tax purposes only to be discarded if they change immigration rules cheesy

To be honest, it’s just because I don’t like it here and want to try something different. Staying is not hard.

It's actually 3 more years, if you go by the 10 year route. I did the same and including Tier4, used the 10 year route.
I also don't like it here. Just found out recently that a former colleague has moved to Canada after getting his citizenship. I wonder why.
Whichever route you choose, I wish you the best and please keep checking up on us.

Tell him to Google scrum dot org scrum master certification. Read the scrum guide inside out, use the practice test on the website and ensure to score 100% in three consecutive tries before paying to do the real test. It may not be easy to become a scrum master with accounting background (may be easier to go into Non-tech BA), but he should give it a try and follow loads of scrum masters on LinkedIn to imitate their journeys.

Foreign Affairs / Russia Makes 'digital' Rouble, Home-grown Credit Card Push by dustydee: 8:04pm On Apr 21, 2022
(Reuters) - Russia said on Thursday it plans to have a “digital” rouble capable of making international payments ready by next year and also wants to expand the number of countries that accept its Visa- and Mastercard-style banking cards that are administrated by the central bank.
With Western sanctions cutting off Russia from large parts of the global financial system, Moscow is looking for alternative ways to make key payments both at home and abroad.

The country’s central bank governor, Elvira Nabiullina, said the bank plans for real-world “digital” rouble transactions to be possible next year, and that the digital currency could be used in some international settlements.

“The digital rouble is among the priority projects,” Nabiullina told Russia’s lower House of Parliament. “We have fairly quickly created a prototype ... now we are holding tests with banks and next year we will gradually have pilot transactions.”

Russia, like many other countries around the world, has been developing digital money over the last couple of years to modernise its financial system, speed up payments and head off the threat of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin gaining influence.

Some central bank experts have also suggested the new technologies mean countries would be able to deal more directly with each other, making them less dependent on Western-dominated payment channels such as the SWIFT system.

The Bahamas was the first to launch a national digital currency back in 2020, while China is the most advanced among major economies having carried out a mass trial of a digital yuan at the Beijing Winter Olympics this year.

Nabiullina also said Russia aims to extend the number of countries that accept the central bank’s MIR banking cards, an alternative to Visa Inc and MasterCard Inc which have joined other Western firms and suspended operations in Russia.

MIR and China’s UnionPay are among the few options left for Russians to make payments abroad since Russian banks were isolated from the global financial system in response to what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Efforts by the West to close possible routes for circumventing sanctions continued on Thursday.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, said it was deactivating the accounts of Russian nationals and companies based there that hold the equivalent of more than 10,000 euros ($10,900).

Those affected would still be able to withdraw their money but they will now be banned from making new deposits or trading, a move Binance said was in line with European Union sanctions.

well I mentioned that I have no problem with racism, I even laught it off. I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, blacks should always support each other when issues of discrimination are discussed. We should not dismiss it or find a way to blame each other because we have no allies when all is lost is only a black brother that will come to the rescue. Even this thread is a testament to that. You can see Nigerians are good people with their quality advise but would prefer to relate behind the computer than physically.

Ticha:

I agree with you. As adults that have been fully formed and immersed in the Nigerian confidence before heading to the UK, it is easy to shrug off and minimise the racism we encounter. The problem is then that we do not fully equip our children and youngsters to deal with what life as a black person in a majority white country gets throws at them from the moment you step foot here. And that is the underlying issue. When people raise concerns about racism, I don't ever minimise it . I listen, offer support or advice as needed. Sometimes, it's not even possible to follow up on it. It doesn't mean we can't validate that person's feeling at that moment in time.

It's very much like the trans issues going on at the moment. The trans movement (supporters of the trans movement) seem to be eradicating women's right and spaces left, right and centre. I support the right of a trans woman to be a woman and my own right as someone who fully identifies as female and a woman to be a woman - I don side track now grin
I agree with this.
I remember a former colleague who was often looking at things from a racial perspective. I used to dismiss his opinions. Then another black colleague had a "chat" with a white colleague about a toy she had on her desk and how racist it was. The white colleague pushed back and eventually the manager (a white guy) asked her to remove it due to the toys racial connotation. When she told me her story, I dismissed it and said "it's just a toy". Some days later, in the pub, this lady told me not to ever dismiss things just because it does not mean anything to me. She explained to me why she took that stand and I quickly understood. Having crown up in Nigeria, I did not experience some of the things that she experienced and what could trigger some unpalatable memories. Since then, I do not dismiss peoples experience.
Back to the first guy, one day, he explained to me what happened to him at his previous employment that made him seem "paranoid". He went out after work with his colleagues and they took a picture. The next day when he got to work, he saw the picture on his desk but his face was edited and replaced with that of a monkey. He report to HR but nothing came out of it. He found out when he was leaving, during his exit interview, that there was no record of that incidence. He also narrated other experiences he had in that same company. I now understood why he was very suspicious of actions and words by some people.
If you cannot offer support to anyone, that's fine but don't minimise their experience.

This one is interesting.
I usually see UK residents for past 3/5 years, etc. for this sort of job.
Except where it has to do with national security, that's the sort of thing where you see UK citizens only.
If this is an ordinary document controller position, then the stipulation for UK citizenship appears really strange to me.

Unless its MI5 or GCHQ and they're not saying.
Document controllers handle sensitive documents as well and depending on the project, may need security clearance. The ones in my company have it else they cannot work on some projects. Not sure about citizenship except if it has to do with the required level of clearance.

I am genuinely surprised at how pretty standard procedures can suddenly be given racial connotations.

Someone made an application for debt. A company feels something doesn’t add up. The company says, NO, we can’t give you this credit because it doesn’t meet our policies. Company communicates to the applicant, saying sorry. We can’t give you this. Applicant almost immediately uses their debit card to make the same purchase, from the same company. Because the smell of the fish(y) from the first instance hasn’t completely gone, company says wait a minute, just a couple of hours ago, you wanted this same thing on credit. We said no. Now the same you have suddenly come up with £800.00 to make an outright purchase. We need to investigate further. Company details their fraud unit to investigate, to prove that this person is who they say they are. Because company doesn’t want to hold funds for too long, company returns £800 to customer. This was referred to fraud unit.
The fraud unit guy enters the name provided by the customer into Google search engine. The first hit is a LinkedIn page. Fraud unit guy browses the first link. And turns off their computer.

Customer (who uses LinkedIn Premium) now sees that Company employee had looked them up. Customer now claims they were refused because they were black? And African? Customer now says Company had no authority to ‘Google’ them? Because of GDPR?

Shuooooo
While I do not necessarily agree with the racial profiling part, she has a very valid point, in my opinion. I think you should read her subsequent comments. Paypal approved her credit request but John Lewis declined her transaction.
Going by your logic, what did the fraud team guy find in her linkedIn profile that made them decline her third transaction even after the payment was taken from her account and after she called and made a complaint?
Let's let this issue rest abeg.

Omo I also asked for advise today and I’ve just learned that when it comes to personal issues on public forums, then I should keep my mouth shut because the ignorance and lack of empathy is just mind blowing.
I am genuienly surprised at some of the comments about your issue. Please do not be deterred and follow it up. You have a very good case and moreover what you are asking for is just an acknowledgement of wrong from them. Maybe because I have undergone GDPR training that's why it's easy for me to see the wrong here.

Please do not be ignorant! A company going through your social media page before you are offered a service rings bells for discrimination. It is NOT allowed. Read up a little to expand your knowledge on the laws of the country you live in.
I believe you have a valid point and it is not a coincidence that someone from the fraud team checked your profile around the same time. What he/she did, in my opinion, is to misuse your personal data, which has grave consequencies for John Lewis if proven.
Your linkedIn profile may be public but that person did not know you were on linkedIn except if you had either applied for a Job with them or he used your data he accessed while working with John Lewis.

You can contact them via their social media channels or do a post on linkedIn stating what happened and your observation and tag the person and John lewis. They will respond.
