Let me suggest that you get the AMEX Gold card instead https://www.americanexpress.com/uk/credit-cards/gold-credit-card/?linknav=uk-amex-cardshop-allcards-learn-GoldCreditCard
It's free for the first year and you get 20k amex points (this equals 20k avios & can be easily transferred to your avois account). You can easily cancel it after the first year, then get the BA card if you still want to.
To get the sign-up bonus, you need to spend £2k in 3 months. Also if an existing amex cardholder refers you, you get additional 2k points. PM me if you need a referral.
Thank you. I'll do that.

No they don't, in fact I'm beginning to suspect that AMEX like it lol. Check out this guy's website https://www.headforpoints.com, read the comments and you'll see that loads of people do it. Personally, I've cancelled once and was immediately approved for another one.
Thanks, I will try it. I was looking at getting the BA Amex card some days ago because of the avios. I have a lot of business expenses I want to put on the card.

Also, if you're interested in miles, try credit card churning - apply for a rewards credit card, get the signup bonus, cancel it and reapply again after six months. This is my current hobby, so far I've amassed 80k miles in the space of one year grin AMEX cards are best for this BUT you need to have a good credit score to do this sha.
Don't they decline your application after cancelling several times?

You want to invest expensive money in a cheaper money market?.... huh

Do your calculations + - interest rates, negative balance etc etc

And make an informed decision........
My reasoning is that I can get the loan at single digit interest and invest at 13% return rate in naija. Payback my loan and keep the rest.

i owe about 5k on credit card now, which is bad...That is my prerogative. The point is, do i have friends who could have borrowed me that 5k. There's noboday calling me every 10min asking for their money and as long as i pay a certain minimum every month. Nobody will chase me. Whether my spending has been wise or foolish as to how i find myself owing 5k is another discussion.

Can you have access to bank borrowing you 2.5 million naira and up to 7 million naira in Nigeria, just like that? That's my 2 cents on credit cards. I think they are useful for emergencies. Otherwise, you can save up for years to start enjoying what some benefit with access to credit today. Life is short
It took me about 5 years before finally deciding to take a credit card in 2017. I have not paid a dime in interest and the card has been very handy. I pay it off before it is due. I am now looking to get a rewards card so I can get extra benefit from it. I must add that having a credit card has not improved or reduced my credit rating. It has been about the same all these years.

Question: is it advise to get a bank loan and invest in Nigeria? e. g treasury bills and shares.
Education › Re: She Graduated In 2016 But Has Been Failing Two Particular Courses by dustydee: 3:26pm On Mar 07, 2019
Les:
Hi everyone, lemme go straight to the point.

I have a friend who graduated since 2016 in a federal university in the east and since then, up until now, she has been failing two particular courses; a year 3 and a year 4 course.

I adviced her to request for a remarking but she's scared to do so, according to her, what if she actually failed in which I told her it's practically impossible to fail a course for good 3 to 4 consecutive years to the extent of not even getting an "E"

To cut the long story short, according to her out of over a 100 students during her set, only less than 30 graduated!
Secondly, she didn't fail the two courses at once, it's either she fails one and the other gets missing or vice versa each consecutive year.

So guys, how do we solve this issue, is there any union or body that looks into issues like this? What would you advice us to do in this case undecided undecided
NB: she attends classes and has been paying school fees and dues all these years.
How did she then graduate? Did the school wave the courses for her?

I had a similar issue when I started my first job in the UK. My first pay was in November and my tax was very small. I was very happy (said to myself "UK tax is not as bad as they make it look"wink. But the tax kept increasing after every month. I later found out I was on emergency tax code and was still within the personal allowance threshold. I eventually got a refund for that tax year as it turned out that they still over taxed me in the end.

How do you identify the ones modified using animal genes ?
No idea, but I believe it will be stated on the packaging. They may not use the normal name but a chemical or botanical name so you may want to Google. The way these things work is that gradually you will find it more and more difficult to buy the "real" thing and the readily available option will be the GMOs. It is happening in the UK with sugar free drinks. They have even introduced a sugar tax.

Hi guys, what is your take on this genetically modified foods available in stores like the real canadian superstore ?
I am seriously bothered by the long term effects of taking such foods.
What would you all advise ?

What is the best way to handle this ?
Is there an alternative ?
Someone once said "the crops we have today were genetically modified over thousands of years" through natural methods and sometimes through human intervention.
The ones I will avoid are those modified using animal genes.

you mean when am ready to switch to ILR? Does this include speeding fine?
I think it depends on the speed. I am not sure but the fact that it was a fine and not jail most likely means it may not count. You may have to check online. Speeding get levels.

what do youmean by crime?
an action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law.
This includes stealing, rape, murder, assault, overstaying visa, battery, affray, reckless driving, street racing etc.

Nice...don't have to pay those silly visa fees. I guess this means when i get my ILR i can help madam too right?
That will be difficult as you will have a lot of explanation to do. The only thing that may help be based on 'family life' or 'private life'.
Crime is one of the grounds for refusal but may be mitigated by the children being citizens.

Just wondering. I'm on a tier 2 visa and 2yrs+ in the UK. Just had a baby girl.Thank you! Thank you. I wanted to get her as dependent on my visa, but then i am hearing i don't necessarily need to get a visa. That i can wait till i get my ILR and perhaps file for her then.... The rumor goes on to imply, if she will not be travelling, i can just register her and no need for Dependent status. Can anybody verify this for me please?
Congrats, you finally gave your babe belle. wink
You do not need to apply for here as long as she will not leave the country.
My child went straight to citizenship after one of us got ILR.

Hello all,

Please I need your advise on this. If a person who has been to the UK on several occasions, has had a student visa, 6months visas on 3 occasions, 2 years once, and then renewed a 6months visa. coz the person planned a visit around the time and couldn’t afford a 2years or more visa. Unfortunately, the person couldn’t go on the planned trip after obtaining visa for some reasons. So, the visa ran out without using it.
Now, the person wants to apply for a tier 2 work visa, do you think the non usage of the last visa of 6months will have any effect on this visa application. Is there a need to explain the non usage of the visa in this application?
Not using a visa issued is not a ground for refusal. I believe it's just something some Nigerians cooked up.

I hate it. I see it being used a lot here on nairaland. I wonder why the think it is acceptable to use that word.

I have a lot of dealings with HMRC, so yes I get a calls from them from time to time. We have got to be careful when making general sweeping comments.
I have just checked and you are right, HMRC does call people. Never heard of it before and made my comment based on what I believe I read on one of those documents sent to me my HMRC. I was wrong and will modify my comment.

My Landing Story
We left for Calgary through Ethiopian Airlines on Monday the 28th of January. I had shipped our foodstuff on Saturday through the SAHCOL contact that was shared on this thread, it cost N110k for 93kg - my food stuff and bag was about 45kg, their extra packaging increased the total weight to 93 kg.
We got to the airport in good time, it was rowdy as ever and we finally weighed our 5 checked in luggage (they let even the 24kg bags pass) and we passed through immigrations easily because my 23 month old was just smiling at everyone we met.

We are optimistic that everything will fall in place one step at a time, with God.
Just wondering, would it not have been cheaper to buy those stuff in Canada?
cost of shipping is almost C$400 + C$94 + cost of buying the foodstuff.
That's over $600, that will buy you a lot of foodstuff in Canada, I believe.

It’s the statutory amount that I’m quoting.

Statutory Maternity Pay ( SMP ) is paid for up to 39 weeks. You get: 90% of your average weekly earnings (before tax) for the first 6 weeks. £145.18 or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for the next 33 weeks.
Thank you for the clarification. I actually thought it was statutory right from the start. Not bad then.

You have about 1 year and 4 months to look for a job that will sponsor you. (assuming you are coming for a masters). I will advice that you start your job search in earnest and not wait for the last 5 months as people tend to do. Also check for civil service jobs, they tend to sponsor.

I skipped this in my previous response, I have over 5 years of banking experience this includes exposure to banking operations, marketing, investments and IT.

I stumbled on a free course online by a professor at Georgia Tech which concentrates on a machine learning path for an investment/hedge funds specialisation and having gone through the curriculum, it seems I will be concentrating on financial services sector as a Data Analytics Scientist also because of my background in banking. I think this will count as a linear progression in career path.

If anyone needs a link to this material please PM me. It a gentle introduction to Machine learning for financial services and I think its not bad at all.
Hi I am an engineer but interested in crossing over to the financial services sector as a data scientist. Please kindly post the link to the highlighted course. I am currently enrolled on the IBM data science professional course on coursera.
Thank you.

Millionaire Who Found Out His 3 Children Weren’t His – Offers Reward To Reveal The Real Father

A millionaire is to offer a reward to unmask the real father of three boys he was duped for 20 years into thinking were his. Richard Mason, 55, plans to write a book revealing how he was tricked by ex-wife Kate, who has been told to pay him £250,000 for her deception.

He is said to be in torment and wants her on-off lover and the real father to come forward “for the sake of the boys”.

His new wife, Emma, 46, told The Sun: “Richard is hoping to write a book. In it he will offer a financial reward to anyone who can identify the real father.”

Richard, co-founder of moneysupermarket.com, divorced Kate in 2006. He gave her a £4million settlement and paid her £3,000 a month to help bring up the boys.

But two years ago he discovered he had lung disorder cystic fibrosis and had been infertile all his life.

Ex-wife Kate, now 54, confessed she had had an on-off affair but refused to name her lover.

DNA tests confirmed Richard was not the father of their 19-year-old twin boys although their eldest, now 23, refused to take part.

He also won a court battle to get her to return £250,000 of the divorce settlement.

Richard, who now lives with Emma in Rhos-on-Sea, Conwy, is also calling for routine DNA testing of babies to prevent paternity disputes in future.

Kate, who lives in a gated £1million home in Uttoxeter, Staffs, was not available for comment yesterday.
