@Enitan

Some providers' encryptions systems are indeed compromised. Some of them include: on Astra1 @ 19e, Premiere and Digital+ (both are probably too difficult to get in Nigeria because of the beams of the satellite); on Hotbird @ 13e, TPS and Polsat among others (again, probably too difficult to get in Nigeria); @ 7w Nilesat, Showtime (this can be received readily in Northern Nigeria and with more difficulty in Southern Nigeria; the information on how to watch this is widely available on the Net - if you ever successfully align to Nilesat, let me know); on Hispasat @30w, Digital+, (till recently, TV Cabo) and some others - (I see that Tushman is able to get Hispasat ---- this is probably your best bet for free TV even including some football, if you can get it!); on Thor at 1w, Digi TV. The trouble is that most useful 'open' channels are difficult to get in Naija! Nevertheless there are still some general useful stations that are totally free.

With regard to decoders/receivers --- if you can get hold of a receiver called Technomate 1500+, that really is one of the best for getting free TV; Strong receivers are good too but the Technomate has better support, I believe.

On the issue of 55w; I'm very sorry the information I gave earlier was not really correct; Intelsat 805 @ 55w is mostly C Band and will require a big dish. See link: http://www.flysat.com/intelsat805.php

WRT Trend TV, that is on Intel 907 at 27.5w on frequency 11661, Pol is H (Horizontal), SR is 7053 and FEC is 3/4; see towards the bottom of http://www.lyngsat.com/intel907.html

@ tushman
What channels are you able to receive on Hispasat? Try scanning in transponders from the list in the following link as you just might be able to get even more channels: http://www.flysat.com/hispasat.php

Please please post reply as I (and many) would like to know what you can receive! smiley Edited: I have looked again at your penultimate post and I see that you have quite a number of good channels. Your dish must be quite big!!! Minna is not that far North and it may just be possible that with say a 2.4 dish, people in the South can also get Hispasat. Again, please pretty please let us know the size of your dish!

@ Pitodenz

Sorry it is not RTP but TPA; the frequency is 11689, Polarisation is H (Horizontal), SR is 11571 and FEC is 3/4; however, I have just learned that the power of the Sat seems to have been reduced; moreover the beam is the fixed beam which will be difficult in Nigeria unlike the Nigeria/W Africa beam on which you find DSTV and HiTV though all are on the same satellite position. See the following link and click on the words furthest right i.e. Sesat Fixed: http://www.flysat.com/eutelsatw4-sesat.php

As I keep saying, I really hope that soon many more satellites will make their beams more accessible in Nigeria. cheesy
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Enigma(m): 4:43pm On Nov 06, 2007
Ah now you have identified serious problems ---- the second one being the more serious problem.

1. The weather ---- for the particular satellites that we are talking about a 90cm dish should be fine most of the time, if the dish is originally well aligned. Maybe very hard rain or very cloudy conditions may cause some breakage but it should be fine most of the time.

2. Whether you can see Premiership football ---- the answer is don't raise your hopes high with those particular satellites. sad

The satellites that have plenty of Premiership football (currently viewable for free) are the ones difficult to get in Nigeria/southern Nigeria esp, Nilesat; also Astra1 at 19e.

I understand that some stations of RTP Africa are currently free on 36e (where DSTV and HiTV are) and some of them show football; there is also some free football at 55w, I believe, but not plenty and I believe that a 90cm dish might be able to do that satellite in Southern Nigeria.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Enigma(m): 4:14pm On Nov 06, 2007
Enitan

A 90cm Ku dish will work for those few channels on 7e; a 90 dish can also be used for NSS7 at 22w; also, for Intelsat 7/10 at 68e; it can also do 36e but there is nothing free there as you are mainly talking DSTV or HiTV.

The problem is that one dish with just one LNB cannot do all of them at the same time. On the other hand if you know how to locate the satellites easily and if the dish is readily accessible you can move it around as you wish to point at the particular satellite you want to watch. Other alternatives include (a) yes, use one dish but motorise it with a diseqc motor (but I'm not sure if the motor will cover the span successfully; or (b) have more than one 90 dish as Pitodenz and others have suggested.

When in Lagos, I use two 90cm dishes - one for 36e DSTV and one for 68.5e MyTV and some free channels.

Edited: there is one more alternative but likely to be difficult because of the span; that is, have one dish but 2-4 LNBs receiving from different satellites. This might however be difficult because the satellites concerned are far apart. In the UK because some satellites are so close, it is possible to use several LNBs on one 90cm dish.

Hi

The 5 or so channels on the Africa beam of W3 at 7e should be receivable in southern Nigeria on between 90cm and 1.2. See this map: http://www.lyngsat-maps.com/maps/ew3a_afr.html.

As for W2 at 16e, it actually looks like nothing on it can be received in Nigeria (I will edit my previous post for better accuracy!).

@ jujukemist

I think you mean 7 degrees east for Eutelsat W3? Eutelsat W2 is at 16 east and I first thought some frequencies on that are possible too in Nigeria - but now I don't think so; plus the 16e satellite is rather weak, Nilesat will be difficult for people in the South. People in the North can even try for Arabsat at 26e which has similar TV channels to Nilesat including some MBC stations; Arabsat may also be just possible in the south.

@Kuntash

Sorry about late reply to your post. I think because you are just starting out, you should try and find an installer. If you get one, stay with him and speak to him nicely and learn as much as you can; you will find that the technical side is as easy as A-B-C and I promise you that almost anyone can do it. For me personally the bit I don't like is the physical part e.g. hammering things to the wall etc. Actually, the dish can be even placed on the floor -- as long as there is clear line of sight to the part of the skies where the satellites are ----- just that this is not always practical with the way houses are built in Nigeria (Lagos esp) and the way we live. In Europe, DIY is getting more and more popular re satellites --- I think also in parts of south, eastern and northern Africa.

Hopefully, with time and more info DIY satellite TV will become more popular in Naija too.

I doubt you can get NTA & AIT on PAS 7/10 in South Africa because they are on the Ku Band and in any event are part of DSTV/Multichoice Africa package for which you have to subscribe; I doubt if they sell the Nigerian package in SA and even if you have a large enough dish you will probably have to get someone in Nigeria to buy you the card --- but then there is still the question of how you renew it monthly or quarterly. About 4 or 5 NTA channels are free on C Band on Intelsat at 27.5W (332.5E). Sometimes you can even see 'feeds' e.g. when the newscasters are still adjusting their head-ties and make-ups etc.

Hi Enitan

Normally an LNB is either Ku band or C Band. Nowadays, they have introduced one that does both Ku and C bands - however, that is not what I was talking about even.

From Berto's post, I thought Berto has a motorised dish - which has 2 LNBs; I thought perhaps one of them is Ku and the other C Band. Thus if he is receiving a sat through a/the C band LNB, he has to set his receiver setting to 5150 or something like that.

Naaah; God is sovereign and can do whatever He likes. God does not "need faith" to do anything.
Christianity EtcRe: Who Is The Angel Of The Lord? by Enigma(m): 3:44pm On Oct 18, 2007
Of course the whole Bible is about the revelation of Jesus Christ. There is a saying which while maybe cliched is worth repeating: "The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed while the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed".

In the Old Testament we get tastes of what the whole Biblical revelation is all about with foreshadows and the like; in the New Testament we see in full, what the Old Testament was leading up to. I wonder how those who say Jesus could not be identified in the Old Testament reconciles that with the passage in Hebrews: 'Jesus, the same yesterday, today and forever'.

In fairness the Old Testament can be difficult, and one can see how people get into misunderstanding. But if they understand what the New Testament reveals about the purpose of God it becomes easier to read the Old Testament properly.

PS the teaching that Christ was just a man with 'anointing' (hence "Jesus Christ the anointed one and his anointing"wink is another soothing nice sounding heresy coming from people like Ken Copeland and Creflo Dollar. It denies the truth of New Testament and Biblical revelation of the person of the Christ, the Messiah.
Christianity EtcRe: Nature Of Satan And Jesus Went To 'HELL'? by Enigma(m): 3:14pm On Oct 18, 2007
You will have to understand WoF theology in some detail to grasp the full details of their teaching; I can only briefly summarise --- the danger with a summary being that WoFers will claim it does not represent them fully.

Basically, WoFers believe in the "word" and that you use "words" supposedly lined up with the Bible to speak the reality of what you want into existence; they claim you can do this being born again and having the "spirit" you have the power.

The above is traced to some further belief that they hold: (a) God Himself created the world with "words" i.e. faith-filled words; suggesting that God needed faith in order to create the world (God 'needing' faith to act --- incredible!); (b) Jesus Himself on earth was just a man; He did not have powers until He received the spirit and became born again (Jesus born again --- incredible heresy!) and the first born again man; (c) 'born-again' Christians can be like Him although only He 'had the spirit without measure'.

Then the JDS heresy: Jesus needed to go to hell so that 'born-again' Christians would not go there; some of them like Copeland and Meyers have even taught that Jesus was punished in hell by Satan and demons.

Enough on the heresy; now to deal with Ephesians 4:8 as you request:

Firstly, I do not think that anyone can justly say they know the full meaning; but, there are things we can readily work out. "He descended into the lower parts of the earth". Of course He did; He was buried after His death. And that is all that means.

The only reason I say we cannot say we know the full meaning conclusively is another passage where it says He went to preach to the dead --- that bit is more difficult to interprete conclusively or definitively.
Christianity EtcRe: Nature Of Satan And Jesus Went To 'HELL'? by Enigma(m): 2:56pm On Oct 18, 2007
Addendum: Incidentally some of us have debated WoFers (as they are sometimes called) over the years on this issue and there are lots of materials on the Internet challenging/debunking the heresy.

To have an idea, you can google the three words that follow the colon: Jesus died spiritually.

@Berto

You probably have to change the LNB frequency setting in your receiver for C Band satellites.

For Ku Band sats the range should be 'Universal' or 9750-10,600 (or something like that); whereas for C Band sats, it should be set to 5150 or something like that.

Go through the menu of your receiver and check the LNB settings.

I'm outside Nigeria presently and I don't currently get Nilesat because a big dish is required; I never bothered with it in Nigeria either - also because a big dish is required. The only time I got it was when I lived in Egypt and it was easy enough to get.

Christianity EtcRe: Nature Of Satan And Jesus Went To 'HELL'? by Enigma(m): 2:25pm On Oct 18, 2007
The "Jesus went to hell" or "Jesus took the nature of Satan" teaching is a heresy taught by some in the so-called 'Word of Faith' Camp. Unfortunately, heretical (or to be milder, heterodox) Word of faith doctrines are now popular in many Charismatic/Pentecostal churches (and even seeping into some more traditional churches) due to the unquestioning acceptance of teachings of people like the late Ken Hagin (and his son even), Kenneth Copeland, Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyers etc.

Many people, myself included, are of the opinion that these people are in many respects teaching false doctrine and even heresies that are damaging the universal Church and, in respect of the "health and wealth" aspects, damaging individual lives.

Good point; one of the reasons for the sad widespread of glossolalia is failure of many Christians to understand or appreciate this point.

For those spouting the line that "pastors" or so-called "matured-christians" do not fall sick:

1. Do you know any 'pastor' or 'mature-christian' that wears recommended glasses? If so, why is that pastor/matured-christian's faith not sufficient for them not to need glasses?

2. Do you know any of them that takes vitamin tablets and such like? If so, why is that necessary.

3. Why are some so-called pastors etc hawking vitamins and other medication on so-called "christian TV"?

4. Does any pastor/matured-christian die of illness? Or do they all only die of old age?

5. What do you make of Galatians 4:13 (as below taken from NLT deliberately for clarity)?

Most sites that give info about satellites give info about particular stations or packages and maybe by the general type station e.g. entertainment, sports. You could try e.g. www.lyngsat.com or www.flysat.com.

More crucially, it also depends on what satellite(s) you can receive --- do you currently have a set-up?

Kevin

In Naija, a 90cm dish will get you Intelsat 7/10 at 68.5e ---- but unless you subscribe to MyTV, the most useful station you will get there will be eTV along with some religious channels. I think a 90cm dish might also be able to get you NSS7 and a few channels. I believe that in the south a 2.4m dish is required to get Nilesat where you have more options with channels ---- it seems that people in the North can get away with a smaller dish. (This also addreses Enitan's point --- a 120 dish will struggle in most of Nigeria for Nilesat to be honest; if only the Sat providers will let their Sats' footprints extend properly to Africa angry )

As for decoders, better called receivers really, Strong brand is probably the most advisable brand to buy of those being sold in Naija. The reason is that its importers into Naija take into account the encryption systems being used by DSTV and MyTV so that it can be used with their cards. However, there are much better receivers elsewhere and any receiver will receive satellite signals within range.

As for stations you will receive; you will need to discuss with your installer; ask him whether it is possible for him to set up 2 LNBs; ask him also whether it is possible for him to set up 1 Ku band LNB + 1 C band LNB. These may not be possible, but if they are that will increase the numer of channels you are likely to get.

I'm not sure you need to enter any more codes since 6969 is working for you and you can get eTV. I don't think that there is any other station/package that is open on 68.5e (Intelsat 7/10) or are you able to get some other satellites; are you using a Jack?

However, if you want to know how to access where the menus are --- when watching TV try either 8282 or 8280 and one of them should take you to the code menu.

Edited: to reset Passwords, you will have to find the Master code for your receiver; you can try googling for the master code for your type of receiver; if it is a Strong receiver, the likely master codes are 1361; 0735; 0235; 0325 -- you will also have to play around in the menu to figure out how to enter the master code.

Where did you get the software that you updated to? Was it official Strong software or was it unofficial (i.e. non-Strong) software. Whichever the case, you can try entering the code for eTV into your receiver. If the current software allows you to enter keys, then use the information and weblinks mentioned in all the posts between me and Tinkin_guy above.

In case you want to try your luck with the SABC channels, the info you need is as below. For both this and the earlier info for ETV, I am assuming you are using Ku band (if you are using C band, the parameters will be different).

Frequency = 11674

Polarity = Vertical or V

Symbol Rate (SR) = 26652

Pitodenz

Since you can already open it with 6969, it means the actual code has been entered into the receiver by your installer/seller; so don't tamper with it until it stops working. For the Strong receiver 6969 is used to activate the code whereas some other receivers do not need the code to be activated again once it has been entered.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Free To Air Satellite Tvs by Enigma(m): 7:14pm On Sep 06, 2007
You can't get the SABC channels in Nigeria at present because the beam on which they are is only pointing at southern Africa and not Nigeria.

If your dish is pointing at the right satellite i.e. 68.5e (the same as for MyTV) you should be able to get ETV. In fact, I believe that ETV is currently totally FTA and not encoded.

Go into the menu of your receiver; select the PAS 7/10 satellite (68.5e) then enter the following info:

Frequency = 12722

Polarisation = Vertical or V

Symbol Rate = 26657

Save it and/or press scan; ETV should then appear. However, if it is coded, even if it appears you might not see pictures. In that case come back and post details of your receiver and we will see if entering codes can open the chanel.

One small observation about satellite picture break-up in cloudy or poor weather:

Whether it is DSTV or MyTV or HiTV, picture break up is not normally because of their own service; rather it is often due to one or more of the following factors:

(a) the dish is not sufficiently properly/optimally aligned --- I think this is the most probable cause of the picture break-ups in Nigeria and I think people should be holding the installers responsible for this; and/or

(b) the dish size is too small ---- I think this is less likely to be the problem; and/or

(c) the cable used to connect from dish to receiver is of poor quality; this is also a possible cause of the problems in Naija.

PS, you can get an idea of how well your dish is aligned by checking the signal quality on your receiver.

I am now very sure that your dish is pointing at Intelsat 7/10 at 68.5E. Look into the following link and scroll down to 12722 where you will see the MyTV channels and other stations on that satellite (though not all of them can be received in Nigeria).

http://www.lyngsat.com/intel68.html

ETV uses Nagra and the codes will have to be entered in the Nagra section of your receiver. As I said before, try entering the SABC codes ---- other things being equally they should open both picture and sound for eTV.

Good luck.

Ok Tinkin_guy

I am sure that your dish is not pointing at Astra or Hotbird - it may think it is because of similar frequencies with the satellite that your dish is pointing to --- unless your dish is motorised.

I am confident that your dish is pointing at Intel 7/10 at 68.5 which is where you get eTV and the MyTv channels. To get back eTV, what you have to do is make sure your receiver has the right code. As you have got it in the past, that confirms that your receiver is "patched" (which is important) and that it once had the right code. It may be that when eTV's code changed your receiver was not updated. To solve it, you will have to learn how to enter codes (also called keys) into your receiver --- using your remote control.

You can get the keys at the link following link _http://www.rdi-files.com/nagra.php. Copy the link into your browser (removing the starting underscore _); at the link, scroll down looking for SABC ID 2101. When you get there copy down the figures; later, when you have worked out how your receiver operates, you will have to enter the right figures into your receiver.

Before you enter it, first of all go through all the menu list of your receiver and come back with your results; after that we can try together to work out how to enter the codes into your receiver.

For you, lekinxyn and all others interested in what satellites can be received in Africa, there is plenty to read at the link below:
