Christianity EtcRe: The Essence Of Paying Tithe by Enigma(m): 8:17pm On Aug 14, 2007
The last question was really very simple:

Can a "tithe-payer" of today choose in some instance or on some occasion to spend the tithe on whatever his heart desires?
Christianity EtcRe: The Essence Of Paying Tithe by Enigma(m): 6:57pm On Aug 14, 2007
The text, language and spirit of the passages are all clear: give tithes to widows, orphans and strangers. Clear, plain and simple. There is no need for unnecessary gyrations to try and reinterprete what is plain and straightforward.

It is false teaching to insist on bringing "tithes" only into "church". Worse, the false teaching should not be exacerbated by adding
to what is written in the Bible.

To even make you see some of the passages clearly, here is another question:

Is it right and proper for a person to spend "tithe money" on whatever his own heart desires?
Christianity EtcRe: The Essence Of Paying Tithe by Enigma(m): 3:37pm On Aug 14, 2007
It is right and proper for Christians to give their tithes FOR the cause of widows, orphans, and strangers. Please note that this is quite a different thing from giving one's tithe TO widows. The giving of one's tithe "to" widows and the fatherless in Deut. 26:12 & 13 did not mean that tithers handed them directly to those people.
I think you should go and read the relevant passages again --- carefully. You will see that they say give the tithes to widows, orphans etc. The individual Christian is supposed, by him/herself, to give the tithes directly to the needy people. Jesus Christ further confirmed this by saying: (rough quote) " , as long as you did it for one of these you did it for Me".

The teaching of bring your tithes to the church is false teaching perpetrated by some innocently but by too many fraudulently.
Christianity EtcRe: The Essence Of Paying Tithe by Enigma(m): 11:47am On Aug 14, 2007
OK

Is it right and proper for a Christian to give his tithes to widows, orphans and strangers?

Note: the question is dealing with tithes specifically - -- not some other "giving"; specifically, "tithes".

Christianity EtcRe: The Essence Of Paying Tithe by Enigma(m): 9:28am On Aug 14, 2007
Why do some people like to quote only PARTIALLY from the Scriptures? Why Quote ONLY Deut. 14:22-29, as if that ALONE is all that mentions those who receive the tithes?
Oh, of course there is more; plenty more! Here is another below:

Deu 26:12, 13

"When you have finished laying aside all the tithe of your increase in the third year--the year of tithing--and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your gates and be filled,

"then you shall say before the LORD your God: 'I have removed the holy tithe from my house, and also have given them to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all Your commandments which You have commanded me; I have not transgressed Your commandments, nor have I forgotten them.
Christianity EtcRe: The Essence Of Paying Tithe by Enigma(m): 10:38pm On Aug 13, 2007
Instead of "paying" your tithes to any "church" why don't you (a) spend the money on whatever your heart desires or (b) give to the poor including widows, orphans and strangers? As in the passage below:

Deu 14:22 -29

"You shall truly tithe all the increase of your grain that the field produces year by year.

"And you shall eat before the LORD your God, in the place where He chooses to make His name abide, the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, of the firstborn of your herds and your flocks, that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.

"But if the journey is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, or if the place where the LORD your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, when the LORD your God has blessed you,

"then you shall exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place which the LORD your God chooses.

"And you shall spend that money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household.

"You shall not forsake the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no part nor inheritance with you.

"At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates.

"And the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, may come and eat and be satisfied, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.

For anyone who can get Nilesat, the Showtime package is currently "open" --- with English Premier League and much more.

You will have to search the Net on what to do if you have a suitable receiver.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by Enigma(m): 6:54pm On Aug 09, 2007
For twinstaiye and anyone else who is able to receive Nilesat:

The Showtime Package is currently "open". If you have the right receiver and know what to do with it you should be able to watch English Premier League and many other programmes. In order to get the right material to do what you need to do with your receiver, search on the Net and you can start by googling the words 'Alsat Satellite'.

Christianity EtcRe: In Percentage Format: How Assured Are U Of Making Heaven? by Enigma(m): 10:07am On Jul 02, 2007
Yes, it is very important to realise that the only hope (and the only thing needed) is reliance on the finished work of Christ.

Unfortunately, there is the erroneous perception that many have that it is what you do or not do e.g. not smoke or not drink etc. No, it is not what we do or are going to do; but what He has already done.

Left to me, I will even advise against using the expression "make heaven" altogether.

1. Where are you located? That will help to advice what channels you can receive.

2. Have you spoken to a local installer where you are as local installers should be able to give you an idea of what chanels you can receive.
TV/MoviesRe: Bbc Word Disappeared From My Free To Air Satellite Tv. What Next? by Enigma(m): 1:23pm On Jun 05, 2007
It depends on what satellite you can receive through your dish. What satellite is your dish currently pointing at? BBC World is actually free on most satellites.

You can try rescanning the satellite again on your receiver in case BBC World has changed transponders or PIDs on the satellite that you receive.

Christianity EtcRe: Fake Miracle Baby Pastor's Wife Jailed by Enigma(m): 7:34pm On Jun 02, 2007
The news is not 'recycled' at all.

The older news stories reflect the initial breaking of the story altogether about two years ago while the recent news reports the jailing of the wife recently after trial. The recent news is thus a follow-up of the initial story.

Hinn teaches too many false doctrines. He is one of the wolves in sheep's clothing out to fleece the flock.

Try typing these two words - Hinn Prakash - into Google to see an example of Hinn's ways. And of course there is the episode of his Nigeria crusade and his outburst because he lost money staging it - himself scammed by some of his Nigerian fellow wolves.
Christianity EtcRe: If I Were God Enh by Enigma(m): 2:00pm On May 21, 2007
The two stories are just a load of nonsense and simply un-Christian.

The doctrines of the likes of Hinn and Oyakhilome are best avoided like the plague.

I've had a look again at what's on Nilesat. Unfortunately the main encoded packages on Nilesat (Showtime with Premiership football next season; Al Jazeera Sports and one other) use an encoding system known as Irdeto which is the same code used by DSTV in Nigeria. Irdeto 2 has not been widely broken (though it is claimed that it is broken on a card called Gamma). Because the Irdeto 2 system has not been widely broken, most receivers cannot open Irdeto encoded packages without actually buying the appropriate card as with DSTV - except maybe for card sharing with a Dream box or similarly empowered receiver.

Sorry, you want to watch you pay! grin

Segun-a

Give details of your receiver --- the brand etc, then we can take it further.

In summary, if your receiver can be patched, the first thing is to 'patch' it by loading appropriate software. In some cases you can manually input appropriate keys into your receiver which may be able to open up some of the channels. That is what is currently happening with eTV (68.5e in Nagravision) which can be viewed on many receivers without paying a kobo in subscription.

@Trini girl

You put your finger on an important point in passing in one of your posts earlier.

Indeed, there is an argument that when Malachi said "Will a man rob God" he was addressing that statement to (I think, at least in part to) the priests who were abusing the ancient Israelite/Jewish tithe. Read in particular the beginning of Malachi 2 or indeed the whole of Malachi 1 and 2 carefully.

The "tithes" preachers do not usually refer to those passages of course. Neither do they usually refer to Deuteronomy 14: 22 et seq that you referred to especially as the emphasis was to share the tithe with the poor and to enjoy some of it yourself by spending it on whatever your soul desires, .

Trini girl

Just wanted to say I appreciate the intelligence and beauty of your posts; of course, I also agree with your doctrinal position that so-called "tithing" is certainly NOT an obligation for Christians. Most people who believe in it have not studied the Bible (on the point) carefully or at all. Many, perhaps multitudes, are misled by so-called "men/women of god" many of whom have questionable motives --- even granted that many teach "tithing" out of sincere error.

We have actually debated this topic extensively and you will find some of the threads somewhere on this site.

yes they would have died but not like mere men. see the NIV.
I agree. But see the footnote in this link: http://www.blueletterbible.org/cgi-bin/tools/printer-friendly.pl?book=Psa&chapter=82&version=nkjv and you will see that the original intention in the Hebrew was to use "Elohim" in that context to mean mighty ones; hence you have the contrast that even though they were "mighty ones", they would die like men. Notice also that the NIV puts the word "gods" in Psalm 82 in quotes just like I've done here; it is for the same reason - to alert the reader that "gods" in the book is not to be taken literally.

from my understanding of the verse the same people were called "gods" AND "children of the most high"
Notice this from your own citation of the Amplified:

vs 6 - I said, You are gods [since you judge on My behalf, as My representatives]; indeed, all of you are children of the Most High.
See the ; that I have highlighted; it shows the separation from calling them "Elohim" and also saying they were children of the Most High. Read it carefully also in other versions and you will see a separation.

yes you are absolutely right, but then again 2 Corinthians 4:4 calls the devil the god of this world
Exactly; I was hoping you would bring that up; how do we then make a distinction when satan is called "god" and when man is called "god"? So when Psalm 82 says "ye are gods", are the people then "gods" in the same sense and of the same kind as satan is also "god"; and is that desirable?

finally looking through john 10, i find nothing to indicate what you said in your first post
People who say Christians are "gods' tend to rely on what Jesus said in John 10:34 "Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?". But what they fail to notice (and what the fraudulent ones fail to point out) is who Jesus said those words to and in what context. To get that read from John 10:19 (or even from John 10:1) and you will see that He was using that passage to rebuke the people who wanted to stone Him for His utterances that suggested that He Himself was divine.

PS I am enjoying discussing this with you smiley
