Five children between the ages of four and 12 were killed in an inferno in the Kirikiri area of Lagos State on Thursday. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the five children, Emeka 12, Ifeanyi 10, Chinasa eight, Joy six, and Bright four, who are of the same parents, were burnt alive at their home located at 29 Comfort Oboh Street, Kirikiri. The parents of the victims were identified as Ogbonna and Margaret Igwuagwu. Our correspondent learnt that although over 30 people live in the compound, which was completely consumed by the fire, only the five children died. Sympathisers were said to have surrounded the premises crying and wailing over the incident, while charred remains of the victims were being evacuated. According to residents, the fire started at about 11.30 pm in the room where the five children were sleeping and later spread to other rooms all made of wood. The parents of the children were said to have locked them inside the room and lit a candle for them as there was no electricity supply. Neighbours said it was the usual habit of the parents to lock the children inside the room whenever they were going to their shop in the evening. It was learnt that the children slept off while the candle fell, thereby spreading the fire to other parts of the room. Woken by the heat, they were said to have shouted for help while the fire raged, but neighbours were too busy saving themselves. One of the neighbours said the eldest son, Emeka, had begged his parents not to lock them in but allow them to spend sometime outside but their mother refused. “I can vividly remember when Mama Emeka ordered her children to go and sleep, saying that she needed to go back to attend to customers who were waiting for her. Emeka, the eldest, pleaded that they should be allowed to stay outside for a while. “She insisted that they should go to bed since they were to travel the following day. I believe that it was in a bid to prevent them from running out of the house that she locked them inside and went away with the key,” she said. Some neighbours told journalists that they heard the wailing of the children when the fire was raging, but could not break through to rescue them due to a hard burglar proof that was used at the entrance of the room. According to residents who witnessed the incident, firefighters were informed but could not get to the scene due to bad roads in Kirirkiri. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “The road is not passable and there is always traffic congestion in that area. Men of the Naval Fire Service got here first, but they could not help the situation because the damage had already been done.” One of the tenants, Udoh Bassey, whose room was also burnt, told journalists that no one could say exactly what caused the fire. “It started at about 11.30 pm when some of us were still awake. It was the cry from that room that attracted my attention. The entire compound was razed down before help could come our way. I was able to save a few of my property because my room was located far away from the source of the fire. “The children died because their parents locked them inside the house and went back to their shops close by. We tried but before we could reach them, there was an explosion from one room to the other as all the other rooms were razed down.” When contacted, spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said the parents of the victims had suffered shock and were rushed to hospital. “At about 11.20pm, police received a call that a house in Kirikiri was on fire. The house was made of wood and corrugated iron sheets and the fire engulfed it. Five children died in the fire,” she said. www.punchng.com/news/five-siblings-die-in-lagos-fire/ |

I hope it's not late...Debrief deserves it for this year...hardly ruffled is the best phrase for her I can come up with... |
Ralia Odinga...5 years ago in school. My friend got the virus from a business centre when we were doing research for our final year project and needed to get something from the internet... Ralia Odinga duplicated all my files and turned them to shortcuts, changed everything in my system...then I didn't know much about systems...some of my class-mates took care of the problem though |
I heard about it last year...heard it's an attempt to stop piracy (photocopying the book instead of buying it)...the publisher said then that it was softly embedded in the book but once photocopied, the watermark will stand out...she claimed it was drastic but also said drastic measures were needed to stop piracy |
The road between Cross River and Akwa Ibom(Calabar - Itu Road) is a very terrible road. I just wish the Federal Government would do something about it...same with the Akwa Ibom - Umuahia road... I remember when Akpabio was being criticised for Goodluck's flyover...it was some Lagosians and Igbo people that silenced the critics... |
When bluetooth headsets haven't gone extinct. The ladies have got the advantage of long flowing hair...just fix your headset, use your long hair to cover it well...put on your veil and voila! You can still speak with that sweetheart of yours. But seriously, what if there was an emergency; what then? |
naijababe: ^ Naijaman's firm had already booked his ticket from Luanda to Lagos, so he had to go but kept complaining that he was bored (that was a first for him o). He tried to convince me to try one more time but I was too traumatised and told him so. He came back home after spending a week in naija.Aww...poor you! You know I was angry at you when you missed your first flight because you forgot the time till I realised how I forget some things these days too and yet you have two cuties to contend with...carry go jare |

@Mr. Siena is just like those people who prepare themselves and then wait for lady opportunity so she does not find them wanting...more like the 5 virgins out of the 10 in the bible...how else can one explain the careful chronicle of events? Mrs. Siena, stand your ground jare...no dreads even if you have to use all your womanly wiles to achieve your aim and you are quite a fashionable woman too, good with colours...kudo. @naijababe ha! I get angry when things don't go my way, I would simply have kicked that luggage in annoyance...but na wa oh, it's better you didn't travel again...the second incident was a tad weird but you didn't tell us what naijaman said about the whole incident...did he continue on to Nigeria or did he come home to console you? @Jarus...I didn't know that 70% of women have had miscarriages oh...can that be validated? |
GARRI (x7):He is not my MOG, he is a mortal man filled with imperfections like all men are. As I said, I see no wrong in his acting in a movie especially as his role would be that of a man of the cloth and very few appearances...I then likened it to T.D Jakes role in a movie...it's like saying any pastor that acts in Mount Zion movies has a negative motive. I cannot explain his motive, he alone knows his motive but in my opinion...I do not think it is worth the noise...Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Shirley Ceaser and so many others have acted...it doesn't make them lesser christians |
Haba! I am only going to address the picking of phone part...my dear, that was quite rude. There are better ways to have dealt with that situation... Besides, you didn't even say what you like(d) about the guy, the both of you were wrong in some ways...figure yourself out and what you want, therein lies your answer. |
GARRI (x7):Hahahahaha...shoo, why you dey carry vex for my head? And pray tell, what is the implication of the act? No insults, just list the implications annd let's see if it's worth the noise everyone is making... |
I love this! I am so bookmarking this thread... Wetin we go come talk, say Baba God no dey righteous? God forbid! Im don kukuma tell Moses say im no carry vex vex for some pipu, say im go pity pesin where im wan pity So no be pesin wey too show or pesin wey too waka but the one wey God go pity open way for am Rom 9:14-16 Let me try on two of my favourite passages Na so the spiritman dey help us for the thing wey dey pain us pass, as we no come know how we go take talk to Baba God, this spiritman come help us talk to Baba God for their language, the kain language wey na only dem two understand Im wey dey shook eye for our heart come know wetin the spiritman dey follow am talk and all na because im dey talk for people wey dey do wetin Baba God want Romans 8:26 -27 This kain pesin no dey see, im no even fit see far self, im don kukuma forget as dem take comot am from all the yama yama wey im dey do 2 Peter 1:9 |
I haven't watched the trailer but if he is acting as a man of the cloth and his appearance in the movie is limited, then there's nothing bad. T.D Jakes acted as a pastor in 'Jumping the broom', there were semi-nude scenes in that movie that got me shaking my head but I guess they were trying to be as original as possible. |
try69: Maybe you are not amongst those that would say op's an unbeliever..so I can understand your point.Yes, because he surely believes in God and doesn't ascribe to allowing any pastor or Rev. take the glory for God's deeds...so, how is he an unbeliever? |
I am still trying to reconcile the topic and OP's main post... ![]() |
yuzedo: Omg!! Wow! U read Splendid?!Lol...didn't go to QC, went to Ijanikin but it wasn't part of our literature or 'to read' books...I have always loved reading... Yes, that woman had strength...I guess, if the book is re-written it should be titled 'strength of a woman'...the miscarriages, artificial inseminations, bed rest and then 'Wole' comes along, the amount spent, hospitals visited both here and abroad...abeg, let me stop...I don't want to feel down |
Reminds me of the book 'splendid' I read many years back, a true life story written by the mother of the child, I think the boy died at 6 and the last word between mother and son was 'splendid'... After reading the book, I dragged out my mum's medical books reading on babies and their different defects...hmmm @Berem...sorry for your loss... |
How are you sure the lady you are planning to hump will sleep with only you? What checks have you put in place to ensure that she sleeps with no other man before getting pregnant for you? |
damseremie: Una no go kill me... Nice comment Enoquin...Hehehehe...thanks. Don't mind villageboi. Are you a DOP too or something else? |
stpat1: Nothing against them at all. Are u from there?Yes, I am from Akwa Ibom. The way you specifically mentioned these two states is quite funny but if you say nothing...no probs |
Out of curiousity, what do you have against Akwa Ibom and Calabar girls? |
It's going to be a very long thread if all the participants get their questions and drop their answers here as well and besides some questions could get lost in the middle of the women's chatter...why not create a naijababe's question and answer thread? The thread will be locked during her show and opened afterwards just like it's being done in the sports section... This thread can be for nominations and endless chatter...just a suggestion |
Absolutely fantastic! |
Abeg oh...I can't stand the screams...reminds me of those low budget hollywood horror movies...where make-up, effect and storyline is zero... Anyways, what I meant was that a progression would have been nice...aloof, caring a bit, carried away by the waves of emotions(climax) and then dropping back to indifference...just like Yanni's 'reflection of passion'...lol |
@villageboi... LMAO...what else can I say? You are a true artist...one of the rare ones that can take criticism...people say I am hard to please but I tell them...no, convince me and please me... Now, that you say everyone was inexperienced...I can't be too hard on them... On an aside and in a whisper: you didn't need to make the actor appear less emotional after all (looks round) you english lot are naturally less emotional...it would have come naturally to the actor... Now in a loud voice: but what if the actor had displayed emotions? Allowed us to feel his pain? I believe no matter how aloof, the anger at abandonment and the crave in him should have showed |
Okay, I don't want to read other comments before dropping mine. Hmmm...it was an okay movie...the 'ghost' lady and the bartender did good except the main character. His was stilted somewhat...less emotions (haba) in words and action. In the beginning though, the glass that the bartender was cleaning should have been up and not moved up...it was clear from the latter action that you surely did not want us to see the face and when we did, seconds later...it was like...why? I got the movie when the bartender dropped the orange juice by the male's character's side. The beginning was not clear for me, there were glitches and static movement...perhaps it was my browser... I liked the lady's voice, had a calming effect even though it was in stark contrast to that of the male's character...definitely a ghost voice... Liked the shot showing the footsteps The fingers with the butterfly ring passing slowly over the lit candle. I know you aimed at suspense...but suspense is totally achieved when we want to go back to watch previous clips because we do not quite believe the unfolding story... Kudos anyway...you can only get better. |
