yemmit90: stagger:I smile many times when I read comments like this. In a nation of over 300 million people. Lol When you understand the market dynamics of an emerging market that is facing recession, you will know what to do. Like I explained above, supplying is out of it. What exactly are those buying imported frozen chicken doing? Research everything well. If you are ready to add another level below what you are producing, you will see more opportunities. Just like my brother is trying to discourage me from moving to a higher level than commercial broilers - hatching...the same way I don't you guys will really want to go below this level. , If you are willing to move up and down the value chain level of poultry production you are operating presently, you will see tons of opportunities. Production is not the main profit... rather it is marketing and sales. Move into what sells. People buy poultry products massively in Nigeria. Those things poor and pako pikin dey chop..produce them. That's how tongo about it. The issue is that the wahala of producing meat and eggs is too much, so many want to stop there. Instead, downsize that and move up and down your level to find a good niche for yourself. People may not be able to buy live chicken of N10k to N15k, but I see many pako pikin buying legs around. Is that not part of what you produce? I see pako pikin eat eggs. Yes, they eat eggs anyhow. Is it not part of the value chain? All you have to do is sit down and restrategize. You are looking at the picture of a whole family. Do Nigerian homes look like they feed together? How many homes feed together in Nigeria? Lol. Families that eat together in Nigeria are less than 20% of the total population. Lol. Those who understand the market will rather target the remaining 80%. I laughed when I read your comments. You have limited yourself seriously by targeting families that feed together. Go to Isale Eko, Ajegunle, Ajah, and many places in Lagos..mmif you see up to 1% of families that feed together, you are a good explorer. ![]() |
yemmit90:That 20% is part of it. The challenge with you is that you don't see droplets of water as a possibility of forming a mighty ocean. Lol. This is why everyone looks at this issue the same way in Nigeria. Remember you will still feed this patient stock and pay hatchery fees as well, so this bring you down to only 10% of total production cost.Despite the cost of feed here, the possibility of selling DOCs is still there at a very small scale. So, instead of 10%, I may shoot it to 40%. Droplets of water form a mighty ocean. All I gat to do is talk to one of the marketers and supply at a good price. That's it. I won't pay for DOCs, and I make extra profit. Who doesn't want to make more money. Just a little production. That's all. And contrary to your opinion, major hatcheries in Zatech, CHI, Agrited, Amo, Sayeed, Tuns, farm support, Finance, etc, can never shut down, and they contributes about 90% of DOC supply in Nigeria. This is the reason I can sell extra DOCs. Lol. If you want to get a parent stock, just sell your DOC weekly and rear only when the price is poor, that is the only way you can enjoy the business because DOC only contribute 20% of total cost of production. The way you command things confidently is funny. Lol.. You are using a tiny microscope to view the whole paparazzi. You have not yet fully explored all areas. When you realise that over 30 million people live in Lagos alone, then you know there will always be a market for it. Shikena. All you have to do is sit down and think. Finally, can you mention other channel you can sell your mature broilers?I have mentioned the principle of retailing as my newest strategy. This is the only way you can make it in this economy. Go and check...you can only make it as a supplier if you produce massively so you can cut down drastically the cost of production like dangote. But supplying as a small scale is not worth it. Just struggle to move into retailing to maximize profit. What you are thinking of is live chicken sales... and frozen chicken. Are these the only horizontal lines of production in poultry for over 300 million people? Think very well. Move down the lane of production. Like I said....I am not doing supply. Supplying in this economy is not worth it. Selling to direct customers is the way out. So, think... how can you sell your products directly to consumers? Retail them. And what is the capacity you can sell? This will determine how to go about it. Snacks, fast food, additions to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, etc. If you have to move into cooked food, why not? Those buying frozen chicken, what are they doing? Research the ones you can do and start. You may need to downsize the production of meat on your farm. And at the end of the day, you will make more money. |
stanvesco:Bro, let's roll everything here. If you have ideas...kindly share them here. I have shared everything I want to share here. Please, kindly add more if you have...I am.not a fan of private chat when I can network well with my posts here. Others can benefit from this, too. |
jeromestarks: quinox947:I hope you read everything in this thread cos people are offering solutions while you both are being discouraged. People make money during booming economies and recessive periods. The choice is yours. No matter how bad it is, people will still produce these food items. You also can tap into the wealth of solutions in this thread and feed yourselves instead of being discouraged. If you buy some noilers or even local fowls, you may actually enjoy poultry meat and eggs. You can do it also. You don't need to always produce to sell... but to feed yourself too. |
malali:Who wan get certs without making money with it? Lol If I see anything interesting that will make money, I try to go for formal education to back it up formally is my style. I do a lot of self-study, but I always try to add certifications... sure...it must be something that gives reward. And I didn't tell you that I got all mine from Naija oooo. Didn't even talk about that. I only said my agric experience was well grounded in Naija's style when I started. And it doesn't mean I farm only here in Naija.. Ok...so, what have you decided to do? Based on our discussion here, how do you want to proceed? |
slan87:No biggie. Buy like 3 to 5 hens and one Tom. Maybe two to have a reserve. When they are matured, and you are already producing egg and poults, sell the extra male or enjoy it yourself. Go for local breeds since you mention locally breed turkey. They will mate themselves. Find a hatchery you can take your eggs to ....or you make a local incubator to hatch your eggs. Local turkeys are quite strong. However, learn how to care for them during brooding until the time they start roaming around. Check NL for sellers of day old poults. |
malali:I cut across many disciplines. Engineering as a graduate...moved into Bisiness & Finance, Investment, Trading (upper university degree), Sustainability and Ecology with different certifications, Experienced in livestock and vegetables production (solid ground I trained myself with in Naija). Presently, working on modern tech like Artificial Intelligence, Gene Editing, and soil microbial....advance level of education. Lol. Education does not stop as long as a dey cash out with am...a go learn am. My principle is not to learn what will not make money. If I see another PhD. that will profit me, I will add to what I have presently. Na money be the main issue. Certs without result na rubbish. Even added Theology....man must know God well. Lol.. Hope I have answered you well. Oga, a no be consultant oooo..so...a beg...no ask me to come set up your place. My hands are full on my personal projects sef and I need helping hands... but getting good hands is hard these days. So, I move steadily at the pace I can, and God crowns my effort. |
JASONjnr:What is the real name of this Fulani breed? Also, how many do you have at a time? Do you buy day-old chicks too? Or how? Kindly share how your setup is like? |
yemmit90:Lol. You aren't getting it. Maybe I think more forward than most people. Many hatcheries will close down more when imported frozen chickens flood the market. Most of these farmers still buying day-old chicks at above N1,000 are still enjoying Buhari's ban. By the time Tinubu's unabanning these products start showing them pepper, over 90% of them buying now will stop. So, who will produce chicks for me that time? Yes, there will still be, but adulterated products flooding the market is a possibility. I need to guard against this. Plus, no matter how you see it, removing the cost of buying day-old chicks is smart. Only that most people cannot get it right. But I will. Also, why do you think I can't have a cheap setup? Must I run a commercial hatchery for my scale? So, don't jump into conclusion of what you really don't understand. The only grace that would be left by then is selling of life chicken to those who loves fresh meat, and in this arrangement, only middlemen take bulk of profit and not farmers. Like you've rightly said, the whole business may soon collapsed, especially if the price of feeds and DOC dont come down significantly. This paragraph is based on your level of marketing and sales experience. There are various ways of doing it better than this. Of course, you have not covered the market well. The only grace is NOT selling live chicken. No. You are wrong here. To excel in poultry business, you must have a market channel that will bring you to final consumers. Now, I like this. And if you can think out of the box, you will realise that there are still channels that can open up even when imported frozen chickens flood the market. Only those who can think out of the box will make it during this time...and they will make it big. |
malali:OK. In this case, you will need to be involved in all the aspect of production. You must be solidly prepared. Caution: Do not start production at the highest capacity of your production. You may install that high efficiency line of production as long as you have made a thorough market research, but you start production at a minimum level and gradually upscale it till you reach the full potential production level of your set up. Areas you must consider are: Soy and Corn farming for feed production. Then, research well how to make very good pelleted feed. Next...get your hatchery done. You can scale this up gradually. Brooders set up for day old to 2 weeks chicks. Management of parent stocks if broilers Management of commercial birds. Cold rooms if you choose to sell meat. Marketing and Sales. Note: If you say 1 million birds to start, first, you can't easily get such day old birds except you want sellers to run fast one on you. So, you need to start breeding stocks first. You are going to do exactly what I am trying to do. Test yourself and your ability with these three areas: 1. 100 parent broiler birds (these ones will produce about 2,400 birds you can sell every month. It takes like 1 year to run this. If it's too small for you...increase it. But the whole idea is to learn how this works well before committing millions to scale up to maybe 10 000 parent birds that will give you 240,000 birds per month. So that you have 1.44 birds per year. If too small, you scale up later to 50k to 100k per birds parent stock that will give 1.2 million birds per month to 2.4 million birds per month. But you still need to know how to sell. So, scaling up gradually is still the best. Do not just start at a very high end. The poultry value chain in Nigeria is not yet ready for such an aggressive move. Your suppliers will fail you. So, you need to be your supplier. You produce like 85% of your raw materials and buy the rest. If you start so big and rely on suppliers for your raw materials, they will crush you. So, you need to put so many things on the ground to produce the number of birds you desire to have. 2. You may do pilot breeders for egg production, too. 3. Then, see which one pays you more. You can d3cide to do both, but you must know which is your main target based on your pilot. Do not rush it. Go steadily and consistently. You need to deal with workers too. You need to be able to learn your business first to tackle workers very well. Also, you need to handle security very well. It is better to have a smaller version and see what kind of security breach you will experience in your first year of pilot than to start very high and collapse cos of a single security breach. My point is this: learn A to Z of what you want to do, and be prepared for any wahala that comes out of it from your experience with a good pilot. A good pilot can still fetch you millions of Naira in profit....and can last 1 to 2 years. The good thing is that you know how to scale up as you make progress. You have so much to work on. Start today. Yes, you can do it. Remember that Isaac made his money when there was farmine in the land. People make heck of billions during recessions. |
malali:Lol! Bear it in mind that livestock farmers are actually grasses and legumes producers. Some people pushed out intensive livestock farming without farming grasses and legumes, but the result is using concentrates, leftover food, and it is extremely hard. Plus, such livestock is very unhealthy to eat. For example, if you are a dairy farmer, you scale your livestock to the number of acres of land you have. Then, cultivate your land, and let your livestock graze it. Or you harvest your plants and feed them inside the pen. For me, the same goes for poultry, but since you are going to feed your bird seeds instead of leaves and stems, many farmers don't get it right. The process of removing antinutrients from seeds is hard and out of the reach of small-scale farmers. What you call large-scale is not. I can bet you that if I give you the cost of raising chickens, you may just be barely able to afford to feed even just 50 chickens. This is not large scale. It's still extremely micro scale. You will need to know what you want to do. Sell meat or eggs. If meat, do you want to sell live or processed? These are questions you need to answer. |
jidestroud:Hi bro! Could you.share the contact of Khaki Campbell ducklings seller? |
malali:Even poultry can still make a profit. Marketing is the key. Ready-made markets are mostly vegetables like tomatoes, pepper, watermelon, etc. Move it to a major market and meet selling agents there. But really, I think if you do smaller production and retail your products, you will make more money. I used to use agents before, but I discovered retailing, and I am not looking back. Small production, huge profits. |
sexyyoyo:I paid marketers to research my area very well and to know where I can sell at a high price. Generally, selling to direct consumers is the way forward. In my case, I downsized production and moved more into retailing. I don't supply cos it is not worth it. The next market I am trying to crack is egg. I am on a mission of producing 10,000 eggs daily and retail all myself. As in, sell at that N200 per egg for each. Well, it is a lot of work. One must work smart. Marketing is money. .....not production. |
Zonefree:God will help us all. |
PrincessofDSS:Lol |
NoToPile:Interesting. Do you think its possible to sell up to 1,000 adults 23kg turkey (those extremely big foreign breeds like Nicholas and BUT) in December? If yes, how best can one market them? |
yemmit90:Yes, you are right. Overall, production has dropped, but the few farmers still buying have more demands than the leftover hatcheries. Well, since the borders have been opened for imported poultry products, it is a matter of time....the whole business will soon collapse. So, I am getting ready for such a day, and it is why I am starting my personal hatchery. I |
stagger:Ross 308 is good. Really, I'm not sure how Sayed's Ross 308 is inferior to Agrited's. I was tempted to buy Sayed one time, but I saw a youtube video where both hatcheries were compared from days 1 to 42, and Agrited won hands down. So, the management of Agrited seems to outperform that of Sayed. |
Nonny95:Let him connect till thy kingdom come....the North will NEVER vote for him. Know this, and have peace of mind. Hence, you will develop hbp or stroke during the next election. |
Looks like poverty in Nigeria is hitting hard. Apart from this person who replied to me here, no one seems interested. Anyway, I have decided to buy a carton parent chicks for now. So, I will have to make preparation for managing about 200 to 300 new chicks every week. I don't want to go this route, but it is the only option I think is available now. Paying above 400naira for broiler day old is crazy... not to talk of paying N950 and which might enter N1500 or N2000. Bola Tinubu has opened the border for poultry meat to enter Naija, so I am sure a greater percentage of the market share for local producers will reduce. Where is the gain if I have to buy N20k+ feed per bag, medications, and then pay above N1k for day old. There is no profit on it. So, I am going via this route. The next request is that if you know how to do artificial insemination and you have enough experience, kindly reach out to me. I know even you that don't know about it will want to say you can do it. I will know if you are a wayo person. So, if you are sure of yourself, get in touch. Also, if you have experience with just managing parent stocks (not AI), get in touch with me too. I am open to even getting more parent stocks ...meaning, I can enter the hatchery business gradually at my pace. Please, I don't need you to buy me anything cos I can source for myself. So, keep off selling to me anything. I will discard you immediately. If you have suggestions, give me...I will look into it. If I need you to get it, I will ask you. So, anyone contacting me should remove his or her mind from making money from me crazily. I don't need you to approach me and start writing a N50 million incubator with another generator of N30million. I will just throw you away like a shitty paper. So. Get his straight. I want to start small...and grow at my pace. So, buzz off if your mission is to come import for me equipment. I can do that. Don't even go there. Your skill on parent breeders is what I need. That's all. You need an equipment, you tell me. Leave me to get my stuff. Don't interfere. If you have experience with AI management of parents' stocks or with the natural mating of birds, kindly get in touch with me. God bless! |
Please, I need ideas on how one can get just max if 10 female and 2 male parent stocks of AA+, Cobbs500, Ross308, or any good broiler out there. Any i0dea? |
happney65:You misunderstood my statement, sir. But first, I want to thank you for your responses. I appreciate it. So, what I meant was that the NL farmers sector is a sub-set in the broiler production. Of course, I can't use it to make the final conclusion, but it is a clue we need to take note. See,I don't deny the fact that the cost of feed has gone through the roof. I actually wanted to buy much more than I bought but had to reduce because of the cost of feed and yes it is true about the cost of feedExactly. But you saying farmers japa and some others was what caused the high cost of DOC is not true my brother.I did not say farmers japa cos of the high cost of doc. The reason they japa is the cost of feed. So, a slight increment in doc is a big headache now. And I said that breeders japa cos of the cost of feed too. You know that breeders cannot use any food. You can get away with any food to grow cobb500, but you can not get away with its breeders. So, just like how Ross308 farmers make sure they get the best feed from A to Z so they can make 3 and above kg at 6 weeks, the same applies to breeders so their egg production can be high with good probability of getting hatched. As at the last survey I did about a week ago,I didn't see anybody,as in anybody selling imported chicken. NONE. All sells of local chicken even a KG going as high as 4,400.What you don't get is that Buhari banning importing poultry products helped farmers...it is why retailers patronise local farmers. Now, these dollar people have made Tinubu lift the ban last year. Cos the dollar was still on the high side, frozen can't enter. But as at N1,200 ...it is already entering. Trust me, if the dollar should go down more....that's the end. Checkmate. Go and verify in other areas. The cost of frozen chicken is coming down. Make your research, too. The woman in my area doesnt even have again as it now very scarce. She has re-sorted to selling only fish.Where is your area? Major distributors are bouncing back...and they will first face Lagos, Abuja, and the PH market. If things go like this, by the end of next month, most areas in Nigeria will start eating imported frozen chickens again. And you know that those imported chickens ar3 mostly grown with steroids. But people don't care. All they want is anything cheap. And about you talking about Hatcheries parking up,this is not the first time hatcheries park up. Yet lots of them are still in existence and doing well. Will they do better when cost of feed comes down? Of course YesTheir yanga will tripple now cos they are the ones producing. Go and verify again. Ask very well. All the marketers of doc I engaged said the same. The scarcity of broilers is the reason for the high price. Please find out again and let's return here to discuss more. Engage about 5 markets and ask for the reason. Let's hear about your finding when you have them. Personally, I am considering entering breeding, especially foreign Turkey, but workers wahala is why I am cautious. I don't want such stress. |
happney65:The demand can not be higher now because the cost of feed is high. Nope. The demand actually dropped because many farmers japa. However, the demand is higher than supply. It is a different thing for dd to be higher than ss, and dd now lower than before. The few farmers still producing cannot get enough chicks. Sellers have downsized, too. That feed issue made producers pack up. The price of imported chicken is reducing cos dollar has reduced. It was sold for N4,500 per kg around my neighbourhood but has come down to N4,200. So, it is low production. How many hatcheries are operating now. Go verify it. Most of them are out of business presently. How can demand for broilers be high now when feed cost is extremely high? That feed cost drove hatcheries out of business. And how many farmers can afford to buy feed now? The demand for local has not gone over any rood sir. Still what it is. And people still buy more imported frozen chicken. How many farmers are still operating on NL? |
I am just thinking. How possible can one have like 6 to 10 parents stock and hatch around 50 day old chicks per week? Any suggestion on how to get a few parents' stocks instead of buying 50 in a carton? Maybe 5 to 10 female point of lay instead of buying day old 50 per carton. Any suggestion? |
A lesson I learned some few years back. If you aren't a large scale who sells to distributors, just produce and retail. For example, I pity ppl who produce eggs and sell to retailers. They aren't gonna make money. If you are producing 200 crates weekly and supplying retailers, reduce production to 30 to 50 crates per week and retail yourself. You will make more profit and do less job. Also, those selling chicken meat, too. Selling to cold rooms is out of it. Just sell directly to consumers. Marketing and retailing are the keys to small-scale businesses. Period! If you can not market and retail your products, you will keep struggling and make people who can market richer. |
jchioma:Your comment tells me that you have not attempted chess in your life. Lol. Chess is a mental activity. You can not play if you are exhausted. So, real preparation must be planned ahead before embarking on it. Can you study when you are hungry? Can you assimilate when you are sleepy? Guy, chess playing is not for anyone but for people with high IQ, endurance, strength, stamina, and good health. Did you read that he was vomitting at a time? I guess he had made enough preparation. So, a doctor or health person is there to assist him. It is not cooking or dancing ooooo. I am not saying cooking and dancing aren't tough, too, but they only require physical stamina. But chess...it is everything. Metal stress is the worst. As in...mehn... no one is breaking this record soon. Mark my words. I mean, no one. Why should big chess players want to break the record when there are better competitions out there that won't make them subject their bodies to this kind of endurance? Forget it. No one is breaking it soon. |
I am flabbergasted with the recent high cost of broiler day-old chicks. It is going to hit N1,000 or get as high as N1,700 per chick this year, according to a friend I discussed this issue with. What exactly is the reason behind this sudden price increase? How are farmers coping? I was told low production is one of the reasons. Low production? What are the reasons producers are getting out of the business? Please suggestions on how to survive this period will be highly appreciated.

MyVILLAGEpeople:"Eye service" after Tinubu picked the ticket. He camped with Buhari's cabals. Unfortunately for them all, Buhari refused to dance to their music at the end of the day. Buhari said... they should all go for the primary, and he did not interfere. They almost succeeded in installing the old senate president as the sole candidate. In fact, they announced it, but they met real opposition. And they all had to fight the fight like real men. Bello and ElRufai know that Tinubu is just playing them, too. Lol. How can Tinubu have ElRufai in his cabinet. Someone who came out publicly to tell APC that are not in Tinubu's camp to send him packing. Even his kids insulted Tinubu very well. But when all their eyes clear that Tinubu is the man on APC's platform, they started adjusting. Lol. Trust Jagaban, he accepted their help na...and did not say much. During screening, he used Ribadu to knock ElRufai. Tinubu is mad seriously. He even sent ElRufai's name as Power Minister to the Senate. Lol. But Ribadu finished the job behind the scenes and made sure ElRufai was screened out. Can you see the probe going on in Kaduna also? This is to weaken mallam's power to the minimum cos the battle line has been drawn. Las Las, mallam will retire permanently from active politics...and most likely, na Tinubu go retire am. All his kids will soon be irrelevant in that state again. Mark my words. Tinubu is a silent killer. This is how he silenced Bode George in Lagos. That man is so irrelevant today. He won't talk much, but his gorillas are working mercilessly behind the scenes. He does not forgive. Bello is in it finally. That one is finished. He will frustrate his life with efcc that he will go to Abuja and prostrate for Tinubu begging for mercy. But see... nothing ooo. Tinubu doesn't forgive. This is why Osinbanjo and Ambode know that nothing for them again. Make dem just dey their dey. Osinbajo's political career is dead permanently, too. Ambode is going to struggle hard, and I see his ambition dead, too. Only Fashola will still be a bit relevant. They will want to use him again to monitor the media centre during another election cos he has been doing that sh.t excellently. 3 times, and he delivered well. But for Fashola to have a good political post again in Tinubu's cabinet....forget it. But maybe somehow, one day, he may still get something. But at least, he is not an abandoned ship like Ambode and Osinbajo. That is it, my brother. Bello is finished. Elrufai will learn his lesson in a very bittered way. Mallam is gone politically. All his kids are gonna be irrelevant soon. We won't even know they exist again. |
Staying with the winning team is the KEY to get away with corruption in Nigeria. Just look at Ganduje as he is untouchable. I am not in support of this, but it is what it is. So, one must have a good instinct to know who to follow or support before elections start. Yaya-Bello camped with Tinubu's opposition....also, ElRufai too. But Tinubu kept silent all through, and even sent people to them just to win the election. Interesting days are ahead of us. |
Uchek:Are all ibos IPOB? If you support IPOB, you are a terrorist too. Don't make it ethnic war. I did not direct my post to igbo. I directed it to IPOB. You are the one who has been brain washed to think IPOB is fighting for Igbo....just like how boko haram thinks the cause is for Islam. The market women IPOB beat every Mondays are FG workers or politicians. Right? Who does that? Those people you kill are all FG sent. Right? Dey play. There is no justification for smuggling guns into the country. That is an offence. Call it self defence....na brainwash. See, I don't talk to terrorists and their supporters cos they have sold their reasoning sense to common men like them. They are zombies. So excuse me. You are the same....if you support IPOB, you are a terrorist supporter. And they will drop you dead one day. Period! |
gidgiddy:By smuggling weapons into the country? Dey play. By ordering closure of a state every Mondays? Terrorists are brianwashed that they are right and others are wrong. You are exactly like the herdmen and bomo haram. You are killing people...and that's self defence to you. Lol. Don't worry...carry guns with them...one day...dem go waste you.. I don't discuss with terrorists and their supporters. When you are dropped 6 feet below, we shall see who needs medication for his/her ignorance. Goodbye! |
