samir101ng:

Hi EuroMeko,

It's nice to see this interesting thread re-activated again. So, many things have changed in the nigerian I.T industry since the beginning of this thread. 2 major submarine cables have landed in the country bringing to a total of 3 fibre-optic submarine cables that bring about a large quantity of bandwidth needed to connect Nigeria to the outside world.

1. Maine One 1.28 Tbit/s

2. Glo-1 2.5 Tbit/s

3. SAT-3 120Gbit/s

With the landing of these 2 new cables, prices of bandwidth have reduced considerably. A datacentre will benefit greatly immensely form conncetivity to thses cables. Furthermore, if we are to really start thinking of building a data centre, a good location will be near a PHCN substation where power can be guaranteed via a dedicated line. What do you think ?

Trying to understand so please bear with me.

The primary location deciding factor for a data center is security. Are you saying that in Nigeria, that proximity to a NEPA (sorry a devil with a different name is still a devil) substation guarantees more reliable power supply?

Additionally, what is the status of home and office internet connection in Nigeria? Is it cellular or wired (T1, DSL, Fiber?)?

nateevs:

As long as the sub-station is not a generating station, it won't make a difference. What we need is a working system.

I concur . Still trying to understand both of you folks relating power supply to location for a DC. Again, just trying to learn the Nigerian system.

Personally, I think NEPA should only be used as a backup. Over 50% score on my performance appraisal is based on availability or system to end user, so I tend to think a lot about uptime.
Autos / Re: Looking To Share A 40' Container From Savannah, Ga - Cars Only Pls by EuroMeko(m): 11:21pm On Aug 09, 2011
Oops, sorry about that mate.

I replied to you via email.

I have shared container space with mates from UK to the USA but not from US to Nigeria.

PS: We usually ship Austin Mini Coopers and we can fit 7 into a 40" container but those are tiny vehicles though - lol

I pray and hope that Nigeria would never burn but Gd would grant us a way out of the mess we find ourselves in without any blood bath.Amen

I share your prayers but there is no such thing as a peaceful revolution. even Ghandi and MLK couldn't get it done.
Foreign Affairs / Re: Why Is London Burning? by EuroMeko(m): 9:33pm On Aug 09, 2011
My question is, when will Nigeria burn? When will enough be enough? When will the youths do what it takes?

Oh wait we're still infighting about tribes, etc.

Carry on.
Religion / Re: What Is Your Opinion On Paying Tithe. by EuroMeko(m): 6:59pm On Aug 09, 2011
No interest in donating to the church so that the Pastor can build elaborate and nonsensical churches/mansions, buy Jets, etc. What I do is donate directly to homeless shelters and verified outreach centers in the community.

The whole idea of church is foreign to me. God (in whatever capacity one believes in) is all around us wherever you may be, even in your house.

.Net, love the username.

I can be reached at EuroMeko@Me.Com, I am currently in the US for the next 5 months so I can be reached on my US phone number

One thing I will caution you on though is that when we discuss please realize that I've been out of the country for a continuous 30 years so I don't want to Americanize Nigeria but instead I want to make what we have in Nigeria work for our own individual environment. For example we run our data center on UPS 100% and just alternate between generator and Edison (local Nepa equivalent) to recharge the batteries. We're dabbling with solar power (again to recharge the batteries) currently but it's not solid yet. So for Nigeria this may be a great option. Do we still have a battery manufacturing plant in Nigeria?

I will email you though I prefer to discuss in an open forum just in case others can participate.

I like this idea. Could you break down the fees so i can see how you came up with the $4,500? Also is this for both spots or just one?

Please pardon my questions, I mean no harm and I am just curious.

Kost developed countries have separate internal and external affairs department.

Like President Obama said, leaders should be able to whistle and chew gum at the same time. That they have a challenge with internal affairs is not necessarily a failure of their external affairs policy.

YMMV.

Travel / Re: How Do I Apply For Travel Certificate In United State? by EuroMeko(m): 7:50am On Aug 07, 2011
My recent experience.

I was able to renew my expired Nigeria Passport via Atalanta (only office that renews, even though you download the form from NY or was it Washington?) for ~$40. The requirement for renewal if if you haven't renewed your Passport before and it was issued less than 10 years ago (please call to verify for sure).

At LOS I was told by Immigration that I needed to get the new ePassport to leave Nigeria. Thankfully I heeded their direction since they asked me for my Nigerian passport while leaving even though I was leaving on my US Passport.

I was able to get the ePassport in Ibadan in two days for N18,000 which is much cheaper than me flying to Hotlanta.

Let's not hope for the worse for the USA. If the US fails then the world will be a dire place. Intelligent and educated analysts who are students of international affairs will understand this and needs no further explanation.

motocross:

Where in the US are you based and is there an active motocross community there?

I live north of Los Angeles, California.

Southern California, with our proximity to the desert, has an active offroad community. I have at elast three major tracks near me adn once a year we do an international ride across the international border into Baja, Mexico.

motocross:

Euro,

You havent replied to my enquiry. What is the range in cost of the used bikes? The prices online are of the new ones and that will break the bank for me.

Sorry about my lack of timeliness, I am stoking a fire of my own. I will post back very shortly.
Computers / Re: Any Datacenter In Nigeria (Lagos)? by EuroMeko(m): 11:28pm On Aug 05, 2011
I never will dissuade any entrepreneur but any business that relies on power needs to be seriously given a hard though on.

Diesel is pricey and a data center MUST have uninterpreted power supply.

Also, you need two data centers for load balancing and in case of natural disasters, especially if the main one is in Lagos - coastal community.

I currently manage a data center (one of 3) in the US for one of the largest hospitals in the country, hit me up if you have solid questions in the later stages.
Music/Radio / Re: Is Fela Really A Nigerian Icon by EuroMeko(m): 6:49pm On Aug 05, 2011
Not going to get into the dynamic of interpersonal relationships between some of you Guys on here. It is okay for someone else to have a differing opinion on any subject matter.

That being said, and in my own humble opinion, Fela is absolutely a Nigerian icon. I will go further and say that he is just as iconic as Obafemi Awolowo or Wole Soyinka.

Why do I think he is an iconic element of Nigeria?

Musical message:
If you listen to Army Arrangement, as an example, everything he said is true.

International Standing:
Fela is a musical ambassador for Nigeria. You cannot argue this fact. He was travelling and playing international when most of the musicians of his era were not.

Moral Fiber:
Here is where most folks will take an issue or stand. How can EuroMeko call a pot smoking person an iconic element? Guess what pot smoking does not have the same  negative connotation that it used to have. President Clinton, former Leader of the free world partook in pot. Pot is now a legal medicine in parts of the USA.
So he married umpteen Wives, so what? How many Wives did Julius Cesar or King Edward had?

This is my own personal opinion and should mostly vary from yours.

REALITY101:

I opened one few years ago with Oceanic bank but this time (2 months ago) I opened with Zenith bank opening fee was $200, copy of my Nigerian/American passport since I don't have any valid Nigeria I'd. I use my family address in Nigeria and my address here in the US. No one came to spy on me cuz I'm opening a dom account.

Perhaps the reason for the home visit was because I was opening a global account. Not sure. Anyways, I just repeated what the Bank Manager said adn what I saw on the application form.

For those looking for business opportunities, this seems like a very good opportunity for a company similar to Experian, Equifax to take hold in Nigeria.

It may be problematic though but with technology like Google map it can be solved.
Family / Re: How Do I Open Bank Account With Naija Bank? by EuroMeko(m): 7:51pm On Aug 04, 2011
I just opened an account in Nigeria. According to two banks, Skye and Zenith, there was no way I could have done it without physically being there.

Additionally, you will need to have a local address and get this, they have to pay a visit to verify the address. Nigeria we hail thee.
