Car Talk / Re: Best Oil Grade To Use For Nigerian Car? by EuroMeko(m): 5:45pm On Jun 29, 2011
Synthetics DO NOT damage seals, that's an old Wives tale.

Synthetic, due to it's excellent lubricating compounds runs very thin (still offers superb protection over Dino oil) is prone to leaking past bad seals.

So if your car has a slow leak from seals especially rear and front main seals then it WILL leak more.

For me it's unacceptable for any of my cars to leak oil, well except for my antique British cars like the Austin Mini Moke grin - aka Exxon Valdez.

So if you already have a dodgy seal then don;t go to synthetic.

Remember you can also stay with Dino oil, the critical thing is to change your oil often.

PS: Even with Synthetic, cost becomes an issue, Mobil 1 is like $5 a quart here but Royal Purple is about $10 a quart, so there's also a difference with synthetic oils.

Let me introduce you to Bob http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ grin

That synthetic oil offers better protection is common knowledge, you might argue the cost factor but that's a personal thing. Personally I use Dino oil on my non race cars. I use synthetic in my Ducati because I ride him like it was stolen.

As far as oil weight, just go with what the manufacturer calls for in your climate.

The best thing you can do to your engine to prolong it's life is to change the oil regularly. In the USA I change my Dino oil every 3,000 miles or 1 month and for synthetic every 5,000 miles or 3 months. This is subjective and my own personal schedule based on my own research on how I use my vehicles.

So, if cost is a problem use the best Dino oil you can get, the correct weight and change it religiously.

On over 100 vehicles I've owned, I've never had an engine breakdown.

Politics / Re: If You Became The President Of Nigeria For A Day: by EuroMeko(m): 1:43am On Jun 29, 2011
An astute question.

If I were assigned the job of the Presidency for one day, here is what I'll do and I assure you that it will not be popular:

Appoint Bill Clinton as the President for the next 8 years and immediately take on a roll as a Consultant for the next 23 hours.
Make the following recommendations to the President:

Appoint Collin Powell as the Chief of Armed Forces, he'll know what to do.
Invite the United States and her allies to set up an Airforce Base in the North East, a UK Marine Base in the South East and a Chinese Naval ship yard in the South West and sign a specific 20 year lease
Freeze all foreign national debt and all foreign individual accounts over $1million
Open amnesty to all Nigerian Abroad who have a Masters/PHd degree and a proven demonstrated leader in their field, guaranteed job placement in the public sector
Set up a new ministry of defense, social services, transportation, energy and international affairs
Instruct the Energy Minister to provide to 80 percent of Nigerians before the end of the year, running water and electricity.
Instruct the Energy Minister to commission 3 nuclear power plants, and also set up a solar and wind farm.
Instruct the social services minister to immediately work on free health care and education

Go ahead, tell me it can't be done, we don't have money, etc etc

Like I said it won't be popular. When the oyinbo dey here before, we get water, light, train

In my humble opinion and based on statistics the answer is a resounding yes.

Now having said that I'll refer you to a saying in my native tongue, "Ti Eniyan Banba Esu Jeun, Oni Lati Lo SIbi Togun".

So if you do marry one then be prepared for any eventuality.

Properties / Re: Why Is Nigerian Architecture So Uninspiring? by EuroMeko(m): 6:05pm On Jun 28, 2011
paragonpro:

This  is a very important subject and I am obliged to respond as an architect because we are being indicted collectively and individually.

Nigerians by their negative response are showing their usual arrogant attitude without considering the issue in greater depth, this attitude pervades all facets of our lives, be it economic, industrial, artistic, sports, etc. We want to fly before we learn how to crawl.

Nigerian Architecture is evolving naturally and progressively, it is a great misnomer and disservice to compare Nigerian Architecture to European Architecture or even Oriental Architecture which are over 2,000 years. These Architecture evolved according to the social, economic, political and artistic need of their respective societies, and these evolution is still going on even today. Nigerian Architecture on the other hand is barely 150yrs old, the first so called Modern Nigerian Architecture was brought by repatriated Brazillian slaves and they were not even professionals. The study of Architecture by our Universities is barely 50years and people expect us to rival Greek Architecture. Even the word Architecture is barely understood by the majority of our population including some very enlightened people even on Nairaland. Most people confuse the Architect with Engineer, contractor, project manager, etc, I have met only very few people who understand the real role or importance of the Architect and are ready to pay appropriately.

I laugh when people say our Residential Architecture is blocks and concrete, what else do you expects? Architecture reflects the social needs of a people and the most important factor in Nigerian architecture today is that of Security.

1. Security against intruders ;- Armed robbers, Kidnappers, Assassins, Area Boys,  Boko Haram, etc. This is very important in our Urban Cities. Even with high barbed wired fences and all, people are still assassinated and robbed with impunity. This is responsible the prison like burglary proof surrounding our windows, door and balconies and also for the solid block interiors and exteriors of our residences.

2. Security against insects especially against Mosquitoes: - I believe this is the most serious impediment to both indigenous and modern architecture. Windows, doors and fenestration into our villages huts and buildings are kept at a minimum, barely enough to allow breathing. This is to reduce mosquitoes as much as possible as they had no mosquito nets. Even in Modern Urban residencies, accommodating both burglary proofs and mosquito nets within the same window can be architecturally frustrating.

I had always dreamt of designing spacious outdoor dining areas overlooking a swimming pool or lush gardens or Designing curtain walls by dining rooms overlooking gardens as seen in European design. But when you consider having to put in burglary proofs along the whole length of the wall, then the whole purpose is defeated.

Also our level of industrial development has to be considered when criticizing our Architecture. When virtually all the materials used in building except sand and granite  is imported, thereby pushing the cost of construction way beyond the reach of the average person, then design and aesthetic takes a back seat. At least before blaming the architects reserve some blame for the Government, the materials and metallurgical engineers, etc.

In conclusion, Architecture reflects the fears, hopes, aspiration and level of development of a people and I believe that to a large extent Nigerian Architecture reflects these.

So you're a Nigerian Architect? Good, show me some of your designs.

It's not to compare against European designs per see but to see how you're relating your work to the local environments.

I am not an Architect but my older Brother is a multi award winning Architect so I have a keen eye for good designs.
Autos / Mechanic Shops by EuroMeko(m): 5:58pm On Jun 28, 2011
I have to say that I've been seriously impressed with the caliber of fine machines that I see for sale in Nigeria on this forum. Both motorcycles and automobiles.

AMGs, Ducatis, etc

So this begs the question. What shop is doing the repairs and maintenance on this vehicles?

I know that the Ducati requires timing belt changes every so often which requires special tools and so does the brake system on the newer Mercedes.

For sure these can't be accomplished by shadetree mechanics of the past.

What about manufacturers warranties, are those still valid? And if so are their approved MB shops in Nigeria?

As much as I love my house, I have no desire to have the same thing in Nigeria. It will be out of place and I much would prefer a more open space that will let both natural light and air come inside.

As far as the design of some of the structure sin Nigeria, I think this shed that I build with my own hands with my kids looks better than some of the lackluster buildings you Guys have shown in Nigeria.

How could Buju Banton have condescending so low by messing with poison and give babylon the chance to chain him up like a caged lion.

What could have made him do such a thing?Wasn't he making enough cash as a soul superstar to sustain a comfortable life style?

He has just been thrown into the cooler for ten years by the babylonians. It is a sad time for reggae music,a soldier has just been chained up.

Babylon try so much to run down reggae music and make life so difficult for reggae stars to make descent living as superstars. They push reggae to the background, away from everyday people, just like they try so much on hip hop as if reggae and hip hop music are antrax and blackman on his own has no market power.

I hear you ma bruda.

But you have to understand that Bujus dominance in the industry had passed.

Just like OJ Simpson, I was saddened that Buju handed himself over to "The Man" on a silver platter.

You see these are one of the problems i have with many of you nigerians in the uk.You are all puffed up with pride and think you are better than the nigerians living in naija.Listen i reside in the US but the last time i was in nigeria having internet at home is no longer a luxury. With 2500 naira you can connect with MTN at home on your computer system for a month and with Etisalat it is for less.More nigerians are having internet connection at home and its not only the sole right 4 the super rich nigerians.I know many nigerian university undergraduates who use internet connection in their hostels and some universities in nigeria provide free connectionn for students and staffs residing in their campuses. You igbos and yorubas living in the uk have a big chip on your shoulders even though you all live as second class citizens grin
There are nigerians actually making it in nigeria so whats up with your arrogance? I know many igbos who live very worse off in the uk and when they come home they have nothing to show on their sojourn in the uk
grin

Wow that's like $17 per month - super cheap. Is that unlimited and at what speeds? I assume it's wireless?

On the second part, exactly what are you suggesting that they "show" for their sojourn? Is it any more or less than an equal UK born citizen?

@EuroMeko
I was trying to beef you,Im just amongst teh new generation of Finacial migrants who have an exit plan as plan B, now unless you plan not to relocate to 9ja at some point in life then what you said I might say is good o n you but if you do how do you explain the Not owning or buying a landed property there work out, you gonna live in teh Air? or Hotel?

I think we agree more than we disagree.

Listen, I am an American now and Nigeria is nothing but a vacation destination for me. Many of the folks I associate with are on the same wavelength.

We don't think "the new generation of financial immigrants" are failures for buying plots of land in a basically lawless country. It's what it is.

As far as if in the eventuality that I chose to retire back home, there's such thing as resale homes, yes?

I have built 3 houses here in the US over time and even with the progressiveness of the construction companies here, I swear each time to never do it again. Too much stress for me.

So if I should decide to come home then I will buy a house that is already built or I can just refurbish one of my Fathers houses.

Again, not saying your way is wrong or my way is right but don't judge us that don't buy plots of lands as failures, that is all.

Congratulations to you, it seems you are following your personal growth plan. I have no qualms with you.

However I called you out on your generalization of judging success of those of us that have lived in Oyinbo land for a while without buying land as failures.

Just because we don't all have the same desires doesn't make us failures.

Congrats on achieving your goals. I achieved mine too it just doesn't include buying plots of land in Nigeria.

Is that what you Guys use as a benchmark? The amount of land you have in Nigeria?

It's called priority. I have been in the US since 1986 and don't have a plot of land in Nigeria and I don't need one.
