The lesson to learn from the Chinese is that they make medium and long-term goals and they commit fully to them with all arms of government pulling in the same direction. They don't allow politics, intrigue and corruption to get in the way of their country's development. In contrast, Nigeria doesn't make serious plans. All we do is adopt ridiculous clichès like "seven point agenda" or "vision 20/20" without making any concrete moves to achieve them. In Nigeria today, politics is king. Some people can't be crossed no matter how much damage it does to the nation. Our weakling president said himself that "a cabal" (another clichè) is stealing most of the fuel subsidy money and endangering the country's future. And yet, what has he done to stop them? Nothing! He's too scared to touch any of the sacred cows even though their greed is slowly destroying Nigeria. If this was China, the authorities would quickly arrest all those people, hold a 2 day trial, then kneel them down and put bullets in the backs of their necks. One for each cabal member. Problem solved! |
I recently helped a friend of mine softmod her Nintendo Wii to play pirated games. This was the first time I had done this (I'd never even played a Wii before) and I don't know anyone else who owns a softmodded Wii. Even the great Fisolucci doesn't mod Wiis or deal in Wii games. It seems Nintendo's console is not as popular among Nigerians as it is abroad. Are there any hacked Wii owners on Nairaland? What are your experiences? Did you mod yours yourself of pay someone to do it? Which modding technique did you use? Have you had any problems since the hack? Where do you get your games from? I'm a huge fan of the Zelda games and I'm thinking of getting my own Wii to play Skyward Sword. But I'd like to hear from other owners before I spend money. Wii pirates of Nairaland, Please post your experiences ITT. |
odiaero:I went back and double-checked. Amazon recently started shipping to Nigeria and other African countries but for now, they don't ship electronics or other expensive goods. Not sure why, maybe because of the yahoo boys? Anyway, a friend of mine ordered an iPad2 cover and it was delivered to Lagos less than 2 weeks ago. I guess we're both right. |
This case is complete nonsense. I understand that Conrad Murray's use of Propofol was unusual, but doctors commonly prescribe medications for off-label uses. The fact is that Conrad Murray is a consultant physician and is therefore and authority in his field. It doesn't matter if he was beating Michael on the head with shovel as long as it was his professional opinion that shovel-beating was in his patient's best interest. The fact is that doctors have to make risky decisions as part of their job and no matter how careful they are, some patients are going to suffer or die as a result of those decisions. If there are concerns over the standard of care MJ received, then the Medical Board of California should hold a hearing and strip him of his license. It makes no sense for a jury of laymen to be second-guessing a highly qualified professional with years of experience. It would be fine if they thought that he deliberately killed MJ, but nobody is saying that. At worst he was a bit reckless and wasn't paying attention to his patient at a crucial time. The guy has basically been dragged in front of a jury because of a momentary lapse in concentration. What happened is very sad but no doctor should have to worry about going to prison because of the care they give to their patients. This case puts all doctors at risk. And in the end, it'll be the patients that'll suffer. The next Michael Jackson is going to have a really hard time finding a qualified doctor to take care of him. And if doctors are worrying about going to jail, it'll lead to more defensive medicine. And fewer sick people will get better. |

Releasing a list of terrorists is an excellent idea. I also suggest that Mr. President assemble a crack team of five teenagers with attitude to fight those terrorists. He should give them tight, brightly coloured spandex suits and plastic helmets. Or he could look for four teenage half-man, half-tortoises and train them in ninjitsu. |
cjfavour:I agree with nos. 1 and 2, but that SNG stuff is a waste of time. First, we need to do something about the pervasive corruption in the federal government. Then, after we sack all the security chiefs and prosecute the police and army officers involved in the 2009 Boko Haram massacre, we need to retrench 70% of the federal civil service and replace their number with well trained policemen. Let the police work near their home towns and live among the people. Right now, the NPF is like an army of occupation. Nobody likes them, nobody trusts them, and nobody who knows anything about BH is going to risk his life by becoming an informant. Plus BH is claiming to fight for Islam and the common man while the police are doing the bidding of a corrupt, useless government and have murdered far more innocent people than BH in the past 2 years. If you have enough boots on the ground inspiring public confidence, asking questions and listening to the people, you'd easily get all the info you need to expose and arrest the Boko Haram henchmen and their leaders/sponsors. |

Actually, they do. It just takes longer and is more expensive. Check their site. |
odiaero:You can try ordering them from Amazon.com. A friend of mine just got some stuff from them delivered here in Lagos. Depending on their shipping costs, it's likely to be cheaper than computer village. It'll cost even less if you're willing to trust NIPOST. |
ritchboy:That's a bug in the Uncharted 3 retail disc. Naughty Dog fixed it in an update but the eboot fix only works for the original version and installing the patch makes the game unplayable. I'm sure the hacker devs are working on a new version of the eboot fix so just be a little patient. I already knew about the dongle. I think I mentioned it in an earlier post. I'm not sure if it'll lead to new CFW as people are staunchly backing 3.55 and 3.6+ games are already playable. We just need to wait for them to get decrypted. FIFA is extremely popular so I'm sure it'll be high on their priorities. |
Everytime CNN reports an earthquake in some faraway country people start with all the "end times" comments. They talk about how there are now more "wars and rumours of war", about how we didn't have earthquakes almost everyday before and that it all means the world is coming to an end. But if people bothered to think a little, they would realize how silly that is. We are living in an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity. The average life expectancy has never been this high. Since the end of WW2, there has never been a period as peaceful as this in all of recorded history. Diseases like syphilis, plague, TB and septicaemia that used to kill millions have been conquered. Even the feared HIV is pretty tame compared with some of the maladies that were common a century ago (the great flu epidemic of 1914 killed more people in 3 years than HIV has since it was discovered). Food is plentyful (though unequally distibuted), and there is far less poverty than there was a few centuries ago. And even though CNN and co are doing their best to convince us otherwise, there has not been any increase in natural disasters in recent times. The only difference is that in the old days, we didn't have 24 hour news channels giving us a constant supply of bad news from the remotest corners of the globe. Just look at how the world's population is booming if you don't believe me! Other than the threat of global warming, everything is just fine and dandy. Humanity has never had it so good. Barring an unexpected meteor strike, I seriously doubt if the world is going to end anytime soon. Everybody please calm down and go back to watching your Africa Magic. |
Ascony:Nonsense. Even if you were a robot on Jupiter, it is still possible to prove you exist. The fact that you're posting here is evidence. I cant tell if you're human or a robot or an intelligent monkey but I have evidence that a being that refers to itself as Ascony exists, probably somewhere on earth an he/she/it is likely to have ties to Nigeria. If I was jobless enough, I could probably hack Nairaland's servers, get your email address, run it through facebook and be standing outside your house by tomorrow. I don't need to physically touch god to believe he exists, after all I believe in dinosaurs just form some fossilized bones and old footprints. All I need to believe in an all powerful creator is some evidence that he's actually done something, anything that can't be explained in any other way. I've been looking for over 20 years and I havn't found anything that can survive skeptical inquiry. Those who believe in God make som very bold claims. That he rained down fire from heaven, drowned entire armies and made the sun stop in the sky. Why is it easier to find evidence of animals that died 100 million years ago than it is to find any sign of such a powerful being that did such big things just a few thousand years back and is reportedly still active today? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I'll start believing in God when I see some. |
v3:It depends on what you want. The most important component on a gaming PC is the graphics card(s). You'll need to decide whether to go with Nvidia or AMD because that'll determine which motherboard you buy. There's not much difference between the two unless you're planning on booting Linux (AMD linux drivers suck balls) so decide based on price/performance ratio. Your motherboard should support either SLI or Crossfire depending on whether you're using Nvidia or AMD graphics respectively. Get the best graphics card you can afford. You can upgrade later by getting a second one. You don't really need a top of the line processor as most games these days are limited by the graphics cards not CPU. You can probably get away with a core i5 or a decent AMD Athlon (make sure the motherboard supports this as well!). Buy as much RAM as possible, at least 8GB. The stuff is cheap nowadays and makes a big difference in performance. Also get a solid state drive in addition to a regular HDD if you can afford it. Put Windows and your game installs on the SSD and everything else on the HDD for additional speed. Don't forget to get a nice, big case with a fan. And tie all the wires inside together with paper tape to improve airflow. You don't want something to overheat and blow the day after you set it up. Add a decent monitor, mouse and keyboard and you're set. You're better off getting all this stuff online or abroad if you know anybody that's travelling. Otherwise you'l just have to walk around computer village and hope for the best. I didn't mention any specific models because prices and relatice values change constantly. You should decide what to get just before you buy it. Good luck and keep me posted. |
The answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything is obviously 42. I thought everybody knew that. Why are you so concerned about what it means anyway? Why can't you just enjoy the ride? Also, it is now considered to be highly unlikely that the book of Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon. The language style and many of the borrowed words in it suggest a much later date. Perhaps it was one of the later kings, or maybe its all allegorical. Thoroughly enjoyable book though. |
@OP Did you change your mind because you saw some solid proof of god('s) existence? If so, kindly share it with us so that we too can become enlightened. If that's not the case, then it means that you're just flip-flopping like John Kerry and there's no reason why anyone should pay any attention to your opinions. |
Its an example of evolutionary sex selection. Guys are programmed to look out for certain traits when evaluating a potential mate. bööbs and ynash give a crude idea of a woman's hormonal and fertility status. Also a big ynash indicates a wide pelvis meaning her babies are less likely to get stuck and suffocate during childbirth. Its like the human version of peacock feathers. |
If this country was run by sane people, we would have amended the constitution ages ago to allow sensible states like Lagos to generate their own electricity instead of relying on the useless federal government and their "national grid". Sadly, more serious matters like changing the dates for elections and protecting legislators' allowances from future reductions had to be handled first. We really have our priorities straight in this country. |
Are you in Lagos? I'm also interested in building one and I need to know where to get decent graphics cards for reasonable prices. |
Grizz:psx-scene.com You'll have to search through a lot of irrelevant nonsense before you find any useful info though. @ritchboy Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 have both been hacked to run on 3.55 and are available for download on the torrents. Uncharted is a 45gig download and Battlefield's singleplayer is shite so l'm not bothering with either of them. I'm sure fisolucci will get both eventually. Still waiting for FIFA 12. |
What has GEJ said about this by the way? It's this sort of nonsense that could eventually lead to another civil war. What kind of country allows discrimination based on where your grandfather was born? And a whole state government for that matter! If Mr. President had any sense at all, he'd be pulling T.A. Orji's ear and slapping his face right now. |
"One thing is certain, we have reached a consensus between the executive andThis is the thing I hate the most about the GEJ government. That its only now when there is a consensus that anything is being done about a serious problem that has been blindingly obvious for the past 6 years. Why can't we have a president that can make up his mind about something and convince/force the rest of government to do what he wants? Must Jonathan always wait for everybody to agree with him before he does anything? How sad it is that I'm looking back with fondness on Obasanjo's tenure. Anyway, there's no way they're going to get away with reducing people's salaries. At best, they'll be a small cut in the jumbo allowances political office holders get. The only way to significantly reduce the cost of government is massive retrenchment coupled with the merging, downsizing and outright scrapping of ministries, parastatals and government agencies. It will be painful to do but will have major economic benefits in the mid to long-term future. That is assuming that we stop electing corrupt and incompetent people to high office. Sadly, Jonathan doesn't have the balls to do something like that so don't expect the government to reduce in size anytime soon. |
frosbel:Even the usual born-again folks are embarrased by the undiluted stûpidity OP is displaying on this thread. Joagabje has finally gone too far! |
Harry McClintock wrote a really nice song describing heaven back in 1922. He called it "The Big Rock Candy Mountain". In the Big Rock Candy Mountains, |
My idea of heaven: A place with unlimited amounts of free beer, hookers and cocaine. Where the liver does not fail, and the nasal septum does not rot, and there is no herpes or AIDS. What good are golden streets if you can't get drunk, get high and get laid? At some point, singing hallelujah and wearing white robes must eventually get boring. Edit: I'm just joking oh so don't bother replying to this. Just read it, laugh and move on with your life. |
deols:So what if he twisted the Quran a little bit? People twist the bible 100 times a day in this section (ask sweetnecta). People twist scientific theories like evolution all the time. People misrepresent politicians they don't like to make them look bad. They twist facts in articles. Misrepresenting facts, adjusting the truth and mocking others is sadly the culture here on Nairaland. Just because Frosbel did it to you doesn't justify starting a thread just to attack him. That is the ultimate in trolling. |
@OP I agree that Frosbel is an annoying bigot and a frequent troll but this thread is as bad as anything he's ever done on this site. In trying to fight a dark lord, you have become one yourself. |
DDN:Not true. PDP won by rigging in Buhari's base in the north. Don't forget that most of those states had PDP governors who were willing to do anything to deliver their states and set a winning tone for the gubernatorial elections the following week. Imagine if Bayelsa state had a CPC governor and Buhari got 700,000 mass thumprinted votes there to finish right behind Jonathan. That's what happened in most of the northern states. Without those votes, PDP would have struggled to win a majority and would almost certainly not have gotten the spread. Read my previous post. |
GEJ might have been extremely popular in in the SE and SS but Buhari was just as popular in the north. In a free and fair election, the result would have been a lot closer, certainly not the landslide Jonathan won. In fact, the PDP would have struggled to get the required votes in 2/3rd of states given how much more popular Buhari is over there meaning a run-off that they were far from certain of winning. What made the difference was rigging in the PDP-controlled northern states. It meant that even where Buhari won, the result was close and the PDP easily got the spread they needed to avoid a second poll. Any way you slice it, it was rigging that decided who our president would be and the ruling should have reflected that. Sadly, the election tribunals have a long and proud history of chickening out when the nation needs them the most. I didn't expect any different this time around. |
Martian:Actually, the neanderthals were also in the ark. Noah's descendants who settled in eurasia later started sleeping with them and this gave rise to the oyimbo and chinko races. Only we Africans are pure of blood. We are the last of the Aryans, the master race! http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/05/neanderthal-genome-draft-done-indicates-interbreeding-occurred.ars |
So what? It"s their money so they can attach whatever strings they want. If poor countries want to act like of ignorant bigots, we'll just have to manage without the UK's charity. |
tnt_hommie:My picture is useless to them if they don't have my real name or fingerprints. Face recognition technology is nowhere near accurate enough to recognize me out of the tens of millions of other pictures. Especially considering the rubbish, low-resolution cameras they're using. |
