Christianity EtcRe: Darwinism's Atheist Concept Of Evolution Leads To Racism And Supremacism by EvilBrain1(m): 6:50pm On Oct 10, 2011
Charles Darwin was most certainly not a racist. This is another example of the kind of odious lies creationists have concocted to discredit the great man. Some of you have noted that Darwinism is often used by racist groups such as the Nazis to justify their twisted ideologies but that is hardly Darwin's fault.

You see, what racists, creationists and religious nutcases have in common is that they like to twist scientific theories and use them to support their pre-conceived ideas. They cherry-pick the concepts they like and ignore or attack the ones they don't. This is what the racists have done with Evolution.

But what most people don't realize is that at the time it was published, Darwin's On the Origin of the Species actually debunked most of the pseudoscience racists were citing at the time. Such as the idea that whites were somehow better than other races or that blacks were more closely related to chimpanzees.
https://rationalrevolution.net/images/Races_and_skulls.png

Darwin's theory proved without a doubt that all mankind had a common parentage and that no race or species was better or "more evolved" than any other (this is a concept that modern creationists still don't seem to understand judging from frosbel's posting history). In addition, Darwin actively campaigned for the abolition of slavery and left no one in doubt about how disgusted he was by the practice.

Now some of the language used in Darwin's books seems pretty racist by today's standards (he occasionally made references to "savages"wink, but when you look at them in the context of when they were written, it becomes clear that they are not. Even the most liberal-minded 19th century Englishman would look like a hard-core racist by today's standards.

It's sad that the Nazis used Darwin's work to justify mass murder. But the man was long dead by then and probably turning in his grave.

Isn't there some kind of christian law against telling lies. Its written somewhere in Exodus or Deutoronomy and called something like the 10 commandments or some such. I'm asking because I've noticed that you tell the most ridiculous lies whenever you try to discredit evolution, like in your original post. Is it okay to disobey god by bearing false witness in as long as you are serving god? I'm not trying to attack you (well maybe a little bit), I'm just curious.

@mazaje
Its interesting to hear that you don't believe in (macro)evolution. What's your theory on the origin of the species? And where do you draw the line between macro and micro evolution. What's the difference between the two? If you take a small population of animals and isolate them in a slightly different environment than usual, whats to stop them from microevolving into a seperate and distinct species? Most scientists believe that the only difference between micro and acro evolution is the time it takes.
Christianity EtcRe: The Descendant Of Apes by EvilBrain1(m): 8:14pm On Oct 09, 2011
Back to the subject of apes. There are 2 types of chimpanzees, common chimps and dwarf chimps aka Bonobos and humans are equally related to both of them (the same way you're equally related to your uncle's 2 children). I've mentioned before that we share 94 percent of our DNA (98.7 percent of the active DNA actually) with them.

Now Bonobos are a very interesting species whenyou look at their sèxual behaviour. To put it bluntly: they are rändy as hell.

They don't form permanent monogamous relationships. Your average wild Bonobo will fûck anything. Males fûck females, males fûck other males, females fûck females. Underage bonobos fûck each other and the adults fûck the children. Old infertile females fûck, everybody fûcks. There are no gäy Bonobos or straight Bonobos, all Bonobos are naturally bisexual. When 2 Bonobos meet for the first time in zoos, they often greet each other by having sèx (the intèrcourse hello!). They've been frequently observed in the wild having group sèx sessions to celebrate finding food. They do öräl sèx, face-to-face väginal, döggy, fèllätîö, händ-jobs. Female Bonobos do gènital-gènital rubbing, males hang from trees and do something called "pènîs fencing". Pretty much all documentaries about bonobos are basically non-stop simian pörn.

Now remember that these are our closest relatives, 98.7 of our active DNA is identical. I wonder how this fits in with the traditional christian views on hömosèxuality and human sexuality in general.

The effect of natural selection in Peppered Moths is extremely well documented. Several generations of scientists, journalists and even politicians witnessed it. There are hundreds of pictures and preserved samples in biology labs all over England. Its has been cited in biology textbooks for decades.

But of course, because it contradicts your world view, you'll just ignore it. Creationism is the only "science" that chooses the facts it likes and pretends everything else doesn't exist.

Denial: its not just a river in Egypt!
Christianity EtcRe: The Descendant Of Apes by EvilBrain1(m): 6:59pm On Oct 09, 2011
A bit about the peppered moths. In England before the industrial revolution, peppered moths were almost all white and they lived on ligt-coloured trees many of which were covered with white lichens (something similar to mold). The white moths on a white background were camoflagued making it more difficult for predators to spot them.

During the industrial revolution in the 1800s, thousands of factories were built in England which produced large amounts of black smoke. The smoke killed off the lichens and covered the trees in soot turning them black. A few decades later, biologists noticed something strange, the previously white moths had almost all turned black.

What had happened was that when the trees turned black, the white moths became more visible to predators making them more likely to get eaten by birds. On the other hand, any mutant black moths had an advantage and were far more likely to survive and produce more mutant black moth babies. Over a few hundred generations, the black moths came to predominate. The environment changed and the black moths were naturally selected because they had a random mutation which happened to be beneficial.

Incidentally, because of reductions in polution and the collapse of British manufacturing, the white moths have staged a comeback since the environment has started favouring them again.

climate change has started for a while, a good culture as you said for evolution to still occur i.e. Adaptation to environmental changes. I'll keep my fingers cross while i wait & watch. Or are there exeptions? The work of God is done. He has finished His creation and you are one of His perfect & intelligent master pieces.
You're aren't likely to see any evolutionary changes attributable to anthropogenic climate change in your lifetime because evolution in higher animals occurs so slowly due to their long generation times.

On the other hand, there's plenty of evidence of evolution in response to mans activities in micro-organisms and smaller animals which reproduce much faster. The most obvious examples are penicillin-resistance in staphylococci and chloroquine-resistant malaria parasites.

There's also DDT resistant-mosquitos in Asia and the famous peppered moths in England. Theres proof of recently occuring natural selection even in people: the sickle-cell trait in malaria endemic areas.

Biologists believe that mankind evolved through tiny incremental changes driven by natural selection over billions of years.

Creationists believe that mankind came from dirt and magic! (Genesis 2:7)

Christianity EtcRe: The Descendant Of Apes by EvilBrain1(m): 1:55pm On Oct 09, 2011
Human beings are not just descended from apes, we are apes. Over 95% of our DNA is identical with that of the common chimpanzee (Pan trogloides). Chimpanzees make and use tools in the wild, different chimp groups have distinct cultures, they catch human diseases. They learn human sign language the exact same way small children learn to talk. Each chimpanzee is self aware and experiences all the same emotions that we humans feel. Some of those who grew up among people smoke, drink alcohol, eat cornflakes (and prepare it themselves) use a toilet, watch TV and use ipads. Many of these facts are also true of the other (non-human) great apes. Some scientists evens suspect that lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) believe in some sort of god

The differences between humans and the other great apes is a matter of quantity and not of quality. It's ignorance and conceit that makes us think we are unique. We most certainly are not.

BTW, for those of you who are interested in learning more about chimpanzee intelligence, there's a very nice documentary called Project Nim thats in theatres in the US right now. It'll probably be available on the torrents soon for us Naija-based peeps. Or you could try reading the wikipedia articles on chimpanzees and gorillas.

The problem is that there as so many logical holes and inconsistencies in the bible and if you are being honest with yourself you'd see that the only way to reconcile all the contradictions is to throw away the whole thing as rubbish.

You've stumbled upon what philosophers call "the problem of evil". That is, if God was benevolent, all-knowing and all powerful, how can there be evil and suffering in the world. It's either he doesn't know about the evil (he's ignorant), or he knows and can't stop it (he's impotent), he knows and can stop it but can't be bothered to do so (he's heartless), or all this was all part of his plan (he's evil).

If the bible is true, then billions of souls are going to spend eternity in hell fire. And the Lord your God planned the whole thing right from the beginning. He set both satan and mankind up and personally designed and built the most horrible torture chamber imaginable to torment them for all time. What an ässhole!

If the Naira drops to N200 to the dollar, it means my real salary would have been slashed by one-third. And I'm not one of the useless civil servants who got their N18,000 salary increase this year. Most people are getting poorer every day thanks this this government that many of us (not me) voted for and supported.

Do you now see the effect of blindly supporting the NLC who are just looking out for their pockets rather than those of the vast majority of Nigerian who aren't civil servants? Do you now see the effect of having an unintelligent president who pursues re.tarded populist policies against all common sense?

Fashola is extremely popular in Lagos. Some people disagree with some of his actions (like the Lekki toll road) but nobody outside the PDP can deny that he's a fantastic governor. The best performing politician in nigeria. A1

Somebody already mentioned Fayemi who's also doing well. C4

I get mixed reports about Oshiomole in Edo. Some people love him, some can't stand him. The impression I have is that he's doing a decent though unspectacular job. Though it can't be difficult to outshine someone as useless as Lucky Igbinedion. C5

Its too early to say anything about the other ACN governors. Lets give them another year or so.

The best PDP governor is probably Amaechi. I'm deducting points because he should really be doing better considering the insane amount of oil money at his disposal. C5

I'm not sure who's the worst. I don't know enough about the boondock states to judge. If I had to pick one I'd probably say Silva of Bayelsa for the same reason I downgraded Amaechi. F9

According to reports, 20% or 1 in 5 pregnancies end in a miscarriage.
There is no definite explanation to why this happens, but they have found many different reasons for it. Sometimes the fetus is recognised as a hostile cell and killed by the mothers immune system, or sometimes there is an incompatibility between the blood types of the mother and unborn child that makes life impossible etc.

But it gets worse than this. According to some studies, there are actually a far higher number of miscarriages. Most of them happen so early that the woman never realises she was impregnated, like after a few days. This makes some people think that as much as 40% or 50% of all potential pregnancies ends up in miscarriage (And this is not even counting stillbirths). . . .

There is no denying this problem, and I think we can narrow the possibilites down to 3 explanations.

Either:
We are intelligently designed, and God intended this many miscarriages (God loves abortion).
OR
We are deteriorating because of original sin, and every year God kills half of all unborn children as punishment (God loves abortion).
OR
God doesn't love abortion because God doesn't exist. The complications tied to pregnancy and miscarriage are can easily be explained by evolutionary means according to scientist. There is no malevolence behind it, it's just how nature works.

So which God formed these babies. . . .The pics are too gross some might find it an eye sore. . .So I will just drop the link. . .

What nairaland needs is a science section where rational-minded people can go and discuss freely without the "Allahu akbar" and "Jebus is lord" people interrupting with their inane rantings. There are sections on food and something called "forum games" so I don't see why we can't have one on science.

Everytime anybody mentions anything to do with biology, astronomy or geology on Nairaland, they geta dozen or so repies from crackpots claiming that there's no evolution, and that human beings came from mud and magic, or that the earth is 6000 years old.

It would be lovely if we could restrict the re.tards to the religion section and let sensible people post in science.

Abortion should be legalized entirely except for late-term and partial-birth abortions ( except again when the mother's life is at risk where anything goes). The fact is that criminalizing abortion is a senseless and stu.pid. Not only does it not work, it actually increases the number of abortions and the rate of deaths and serious complications.

A girl who wants an abortion and is facing the loss of her future and her dreams is going to get one whether its legal or not. By criminalizing it, you only drive it underground so that instead of qualified doctors, all sorts of quacks and seedy characters are the ones providing the service. This is why a procedure which is extremely safe in the developed world has such a high mortality and morbidity here. Plus the quacks don't bother helping the girls to prevent  future pregnancies, the sooner a girl comes back with another unwanted pregnancy, the more money they make.

In the UK, abortions are legal and paid for by the NHS. If a girl wants an abortion, she is first counselled about alternatives like adoption. She receives comprehensive se.x education including on subjects like HIV and STIs. Afterwards, she is given contraceptives so that she doesn't get pregnant again until she is ready.

In the UK, it is rare for a woman to have more than 1 or 2 abortions. Here in Nigeria, more than half of my female patients admit to having had at least 2. I once saw a woman who counted 16 abortions and couldn't even remember all the ones she did in secondary school. Nigerians need to stop deceiving themselves.

BusinessRe: Naira Hits All-Time Low Against The US Dollar by EvilBrain1(op): 1:06am On Oct 07, 2011
From ibtimes.com

The Nigerian naira struck a new record low of 164.85 to the dollar in the interbank market on Thursday, pressured for a second day by the central bank's comments earlier this week that it would not support the currency at all costs.

After the market close, however, the bank took an alternative step to help protect the local currency, saying in a letter made publicly available that it would no longer allow oil companies to buy dollars at its auctions for buying oil product imports. Those companies should use the foreign exchange they earn from exporting crude oil, it said.

The ban applies to oil companies that have SWAP agreements with the state oil company, where they agree to market and export Nigeria's crude oil, in return for delivering fuel, like petrol and diesel, which is imported from other countries.

The decision is expected to reduce dollar demand at the central bank's bi-weekly auctions and support the naira.

"The move will reduce drastically demand at the official window and consequently help the naira appreciate. This could also be reflected in the interbank market as well," one foreign exchange trader said.

"What the oil companies do is to buy dollars at a cheaper rate at the auction and sell their export proceeds to banks or in the parallel market. It's good for the country in the long run because most of the oil firms are arbitraging on the naira currency," he added.

The naira weakened to 164.85 to the dollar, a new record low, at one point on Thursday, from 161.70 at the close on Wednesday. It remained under pressure after central bank Governor Lamido Sanusi said on Wednesday the naira could depreciate if oil prices and foreign exchange reserves continue to fall and attempts at monetary intervention are exhausted.

Last week the bank breached its policy and allowed the naira to trade outside the weakest limit of its target band but said it had not yet decided on whether to change the +/- 3 percent target band around 150 to the dollar.

Traders said the central bank's failure to fill all demand for forex at a bi-weekly auction on Wednesday, as well as its breach of the target band and its comment on the outlook for the currency have eroded confidence in the market.

FLEXIBLE APPROACH

"Many importers are now bringing forward their obligations in the face of the recent position of the authority on the naira's valuation," one dealer said.

"We have seen the forex reserves going down at a time when the oil price was above the 2011 budget benchmark, and the fact that next year's budget is being premised on (an exchange rate of) 153 (to the dollar) -- all these are indications that the government is no longer willing to defend the naira at the present level."

The exchange rate of 153 to the dollar assumed in the 2012 budget is weaker than the 150 per dollar rate on which Nigeria's 2011 budget is based.

The IMF said earlier this year that the naira was over-valued and that a more flexible approach to currency control would cushion external shocks to sub-Saharan Africa's second-largest economy.

Every time the naira goes down, it means your salary and the value of the money in your bank account goes down as well. And the root cause is government overspending. When the government spends more than it earns, the difference gets taken out of every Nigerian's pocket.

Someone should please tell GEJ to stop spending so much money. The rate at which this government burns cash is just ridiculous. And its not like they are pending it on anything sensible, there are no new roads or railways or teaching hospitals or schools. Between salaries, allowances, bribes and corruption; all the money disappears with nothing to show.

Plus Jonathan wasted all the excess cash from the last oil boom on his s.tupid election campaign so that now that oil prices are falling, all of us must now become poorer. The guy deserves to be slapped hard.

Naira Hits All-time Low, CBN Considering Devaluation.

From Businessweek.com
Nigeria’s naira fell to the weakest on record in the interbank market after the currency declined at a central-bank dollar auction and Governor Lamido Sanusi said the naira won’t be defended “at all costs.”

The currency of sub-Saharan Africa’s second-biggest economy lost as much as 1.8 percent to 164.425 per dollar and traded down 1.1 percent to 163.15 by 12:18 p.m. in Lagos, the commercial capital, the weakest since at least 1994, when Bloomberg began compiling the data.

The marginal rate at yesterday’s auction, which is also used as the prevailing exchange rate, weakened to 155.40 naira, the lowest on record. Sanusi made the comment on the currency in an interview on CNBC Africa television yesterday.

“Sanusi’s latest views somewhat represent a break with previous comments surrounding the naira and point to the increased possibility that the central bank is effectively starting to consider a controlled currency devaluation,” Matthew Pearson, the head of African equity products at Standard Bank Plc, wrote in an e-mailed research note today.

The central bank has been using foreign-currency reserves to keep the naira within a 3 percentage-point band above or below 150 per dollar at its twice-weekly auctions. It broke that band the first time on Sept. 26.

The West African nation will estimate its revenue using a crude-oil price of $75 a barrel and an exchange rate of 153 naira per dollar, weaker than the current 150 naira, according to the government’s budget proposal submitted to lawmakers on Oct. 4. If the 3 percent range is applied to the new 153 target rate, the upper band rises to 157.6, which is still above the present auction rate, Pearson wrote.

To prevent the dollar-naira rate becoming “a one-way and disorderly bet higher, the central bank will have to further tighten liquidity conditions and still provide ample foreign- currency supply at the auctions,” he said.

The central bank sold $400 million at yesterday’s auction, compared with $685.4 million demanded by lenders.

PoliticsRe: Ekweremadu Asks Senate To Legalise Prostitution by EvilBrain1(m): 12:36am On Oct 07, 2011
You're going to have pr0stitution whether its legal or not. No society has ever managed managed to wipe it out, there are pr0stitutes even in Mecca. Criminalizing it only drives it underground leading to p.imping and worse crimes like human trafficking, violence and even murder.

Legalizing prostitution means that you can regulate it. It means that you can force the customers to use condoms to remove the risk of STIs. It means you can restrict them to certain areas and stop them from becoming a public nuisance. It means that the girls will be protected from trafficking, violence and exploitation. It means that pr0stitutes can pay taxes and contribute to society. It means that they can retire and get pensions or move to other professions. Also the police can concentrate on more serious crimes rather than wasting their time chasing something they can't stop.

Legalizing prostitution is a perfectly sensible move that is presently working well in countries like Italy, Holland and parts of the US. Unfortunately the Christian talibans and the Islamic fundamentalists will never let it happen.
