Well, in that case that's the only "crime" he committed. I bet they're just a bunch of Hot young adults exploring their sexuality. Or that guy has got some mad manipulation skills.

Maybe because I'm kinda new here I have not experienced that. I see people who take risks every day without the right equipment sometimes without their payment.

Everything I use I had to bring in because there was none available. When they tried to provide it was always sub standard. I could not use it.

If you have a different experience I'd be glad if you could share it with me just to get a sense of what goes on and why you see them as failures.

Good job. Keep it up! At least you and many others try to create solutions.

Hahahaha, so you no know the guy we you mention deh UK? Abeg, to hell with the emotional blackmail. Why don't you become a doctor and stay in Nigeria? You would understand it then when you are offered a 60k job and told to stay put in that hospital 24/7/365 when a teacher who pockets similar goes to a 8-4pm job, and have a life outside her work place, while you after having not done anything in the last 7 years of your life, are still expected to not have a life again, especially at a pittance. Abeg, lemme not just talk. . .

I have no qualms with jumping ship due to abysmal pay. However, I'm tired of the numerous dishonest stories on Twitter about why they're quitting because of equipment.

They are mainly leaving because there's an international demand for those in their profession and the pay is good.

every Nigerian believes his/ her problem is money, up until that money is given and the problem even worsens, they remind of me a certain ASUU who believe that quality education is directly proportional to their salaries and allowances, and yet when their demands are acceded to, it seems like the tertiary education sector becomes worse.

Don't mind them. Read the rest of the thread, it's obvious that their pay is the major reason. They act like they're the only ones being paid poorly.

I agree with you, everyone keeps asking for more money but no one comes up with solutions.

Unfortunately, there is a much more bigger picture, and problem of health is just one of them....It goes beyond building hospitals, etc....We have a long way to go to be in the league of super nations. If u want to go, Go. But, don't forget u trained in Nigeria and probably might not have been able to get into medical school abraod or afford it...Yet, you will now h=gain work as a doctor there without owing massive student loans!!!!

SO don't come here and say nonsense. What's happening in Africa is sad, but it's not entirely the fault of this generation. We were born into this mess. The great nations have gained greatness over a century of blood and sweat and we have to pay our dues b4 the tide can change. Oh, by the way, i'm a Doctor typing from UK

A good number of them hide under the excuse of "no equipment" but are solely after the money. These guys get cheap as fvck education in Naija, dump the helpless masses and go for higher paying rates outside the country. Even if we had equipment, many of them would still take the PLAB or whatever exam.

I recently read an article about how doctors and engineers, who brave dangers in explosion ridden Gaza, work together to 3D print basic medical equipment and they aim for much more than that.

Sure, we've got major issues with corruption and underfunding. However, their response doesn't solve the problem. It only hurts more people in the long run.

I didn't sound verbatim here, if you read properly, I only stated that I'm a part 1 university student, hoping to learn from the in-house scientists research and also present my own research in the future.

Thanks.

Nigerians your age are the lucky ones. You have the internet, free online vids, websites to download books and papers, DIY tutorial websites, people to give you advice etc while you're still in your first year.

Read science blogs (Nature, physics world, futurist etc) to know the latest and emerging fields of research, pick an area you'd like to work in (e.g. AI, quantum computing, nanoscience, AR etc), Google up the requirements for competency in the field, self study the required courses in your free time while doing your undergraduate, try and get good grades, learn some basic programming language, finish up your undergraduate degree and go for an MSc OUTSIDE Naija, do an MSc research in your interested field of research and you can easily secure a PhD position.

That's the easiest route to becoming a researcher. Just remember you're sub-saharan african, make use of your opportunities wisely. There won't be many! sad

Only in a forum like Nairaland, a platform that is inhabited by some of the dumbest motherfuckers known to humanity will comment like this emanate.

Can you in a single sentence, expressly articulate how exactly has the mere existence of homo-sapiens with a sexual orientation deviating from yours a threat to you in any way?

Haha. It's not just nairaland but most Nigerians. The honest truth is that most Nigerians are barbaric and have poor critical thinking skills at the moment due to our sh!t education.

This is their typical line of reasoning:

"He likes men/He takes it up the arse/She fancies women/He said something against my pastor or my personal beliefs/He has sinned according to my religious code of conduct... I am therefore offended/disgusted! He should be beaten, imprisoned, killed etc."

They don't seem to know the difference between being offended and actual harm e.g. a criminal who is a danger to the safety of the people in a society.

The law against homosexuality in Nigeria is basically a law that protects the majority's right to be offended by what they religiously view as a sin. Nothing more.

We will never be able to truly develop as a society if all opinions aren't open for debate, if people's beliefs can't be criticized, if religion can't be separated from State etc.

Just read a few snippets from Foundations of ADEC. It's a great book and simplifies concepts related to electrical circuits. However, I think it is based on the black box model, which Chemystery seems already well versed in.

Either ways, these are fantastic suggestions. For the fundamentals, check Solymer and Walsh, and for black-box refinement, Agarwal and Lang.

Yeah. It's definitely a black box model based book. And you're right, Solymar for a basic introduction to solid state physics to explain why materials have different electrical properties. But not much deeper than that, since most electrical engineers working at the macroscale level of circuits and stuff don't really need stuff like quantum transport theory as electron transport at macro-scale surely isn't ballistic and scattering reigns supreme.

At best, he can read more on some semiconductor physics for the physics of transistors, heterejunctions and the likes.

Oh this is a great suggestion! I will try to make something up this weekend. I hope I remember.
Actually, let's create a common heading series for different physical phenomena, and then anyone who feels like explaining anyone of the phenomena can then make a thread with the common heading and specific subheading.

I suggest a common heading name: "How does it work series: {Insert specific heading}"
e.g. "How does it work series: Luminescence"

Please mention this person if you remember their moniker. The more the merrier!

Yeah sure. I agree with the title series. Although I'm currently very busy, I'll like to be part of this. At least I should be able to create time during weekends.

Unfortunately, I can't remember his moniker. I wish I did. Anyways, I'm sure more will discover this thread over time.

Many of the components in a typical electrical/electronic circuit system are fundamentally quantum mechanical systems. Your circuits will begin to make mad sense when approached from a QM perspective. There is a book, "Electrical Properties of Matter" by D. Walsh and F. Schubert (I think). It puts things in perspective. I'll check later if I have the e-copy, then I can share it with you. Even if I don't, please feel free to openly discuss anything about your circuits here. If not me, someone else with better experience might have useful insights for you.
-------------
Just Checked. It's "Electrical Properties of Materials" by D. Walsh (At least I got something right..haha) and L. Solymar. Unfortunately, I don't have the e-Copy. sad sad

That's a very nice book you recommended to explain the basic solid state physics behind conductivity and all that.

But for a good foundation in electronic circuits for an engineer, I think Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Curcuits by A.Agarwal and J.Lang would be great for you. I used this when I needed basic electonics knowledge. Everyone rates The Art of Electronics as the best but I think it's not for a newbie.

Source for books? "Libgen" is heaven for the poor african who can't afford to buy books grin

AgentOfAllah:

Oh, what an atrocious disgrace. You shattered my last ember of hope cry

I didn't prepare this sample, so I'm not sure if any post-synthesis enhancement was done. The PL test though, was done in a HV cryostat chamber, so it's highly unlikely that air contamination occurred. Well, you know this material more than I do, but that orange peak didn't look like trap states to me. Its FWHM was narrow, more like free excitons, or even free carriers. It's probably an innate characteristic of the material system.

I imagine it isn't. I'm just a bitter soul, haha!

Oh lawd! So much for the Giant of Africa...more like the giant armpit of Africa!
I want to do those cool light trapping and maybe nonlaser BEC experiments. Not for any particular reason..just for funzies.

You just channeled my feeling.

Agabi Oshiorenoya! Omg, how come I never heard of this bloke? What Another Nigerian physicist that is interested in neuroscience? Is this heaven?? Omg! I'm mulling neuroscience as my next fancy. Specifically, I want to answer consciousness! I think I'm going crazy so keep me in your thoughts, haha!

Listen, let's stay in touch and keep the door for collaboration open.
Now I'm interested in knowing all the active physicists on this forum. I think I'll start a thread to find out.

Oh! If the width of the peak is narrow, then you're definitely right. It can't be trap trap state emission. It has to be something intrinsic... maybe quantum confinement effects as a result of the structural changes. But this is your area. Although I'll love to learn to use your tempo/spatial/temperature resolved femtosecond spectroscopic techniques if I get the luck to wriggle my way into a good lab. grin

Yeah. We really need to keep in touch as well as with other Nigerians in STEM, it's necessary for our growth in Naija.

Great work with the new thread you opened by the way!

AgentOfAllah:

My feeling exactly when I saw your moniker! BTW, I also work on MOCVD, but I'm primarily an ultrafast spectroscopy guy. Do you think there's anywhere in Nigeria where we have MBE/MOCVD reactors?

Haha! I once searched online in ALL our research institutes whose budgets run into BILLIONS of Naira and all I could find was a very old and rickety stand-alone thermal evaporator unit in Abuja probably equipped with only a single roughing pump. You can never hope to make high purity thin films or nanostructures in Nigeria, not to speak of characterizing them. That's for sure! Criminals at all levels.

AgentOfAllah:

Yeah, I've noticed it does get a lot of Nature papers! Let's hope the stability issue is fixed. I once did temperature dependent PL studies on one, and its luminescence changed from refulgent green at low temperature (13K) to dull orange at 290K. That didn't make sense to me because the redshift was more than Varshni's model could account for within that temperature range. It turns out that the atomic arrangements are prone to significant thermally induced reconfiguration. For someone that works with mechanically robust inorganics, that was befuddling. Never mind applications, there's so much Physics that can be done within your field! Can't wait to read about your works!

Wow. That's a large shift in PL peak and you're right. It strongly suggests that the reconfiguration energy is on the order of thermal energy to induce such huge structural changes probably causing the formation of large density of trap states. Did you guys thermally anneal your sample for a while before doing the measurements? It generally makes films more stable. Anyways, the device operating temp range isn't that wide and such shifts wouldn't be present while moisture and O2 attacks can be prevented with the usual encapsulation methods well developed for its organic cousins.

AgentOfAllah:

I call my Spintronics colleagues spin doctors, mostly because most of their theories completely fly over my head! But yes, that too is a potentially revolutionary field. I mean, to generate current flux with negligible thermal loss...Oh, the humanity!

Hehehe. I once took a course on spintronics. Not too horrible. Yes, spin currents... the possibilities. Still a relatively young field though.

AgentOfAllah:

I'd gladly accept that offer if it comes with a well-funded Photonics and Spectroscopy lab. I really want to teach in Nigeria at some point, even if it's pro bono, but Nigerian professors are mostly inactive researchers for lack of funding, and that puts me off! I'll just become obsolete in less than 3 years, then we're back to square 1. I hate square 1s!! I too am completing my PhD pretty pretty soon!

Very true. I am quite sure that the only place in sub-saharan Africa with a good laser physics lab is in South Africa. I think they do stuff on ultra cold atom spectroscopy and other AMO kinda stuff. You should check their university websites. They even have an expensive nanoscience centre or so according to news. Not to speak of their large array of telescopes for astronomy. I simply don't get why we are so far behind compared to SA in STEM.

I really want to be able to do research somewhere in Africa, I really won't mind if it's not in Naija, but Nigeria would be preferable. Unfortunately, our useless illiterate leaders, with a primitive and childish impulse to agglomerate wealth like it's candy, would rather use the nation's wealth to buy houses in Dubai et al. Well, most of our "Profs" aren't that different from the politicians too.

Anyways, you can do your research abroad till you get famous enough to attract big grants to set up a lab in Nigeria. Or you can go the way of Agabi Oshiorenoya. But it's really nice to know a fellow Nigerian with whom you could have this sorta chats with!

Hi Exciton!
I started reading your posts when I saw your moniker (it's a dead giveaway!). This post confirms my suspicion that you're an LED bloke! It's refreshing to find someone working on LEDs. Although, I've had collaborations with some core Perovskite guys, My focus is on inorganic III-Nitrides for Deep UV applications.

I once did Optical and and carrier dynamics studies on a group of Perovskite materials (lead-iodide based), and they were extremely frustrating to pin down because they were very susceptible to thermal degradation. I know the study of Perovskite is an exciting, reinvigorated field, and they are especially notable for their energetic tunability, which, in principle, makes them great for solar cell applications. However, I fear they are not very stable in the long term, compared to their established inorganic counterparts. I'm not a Perovskite expert, so indulge my ignorant question: Do you think they can replace traditional solutions, or they'll just augment them?

BTW, is your intended application for water splitting or PV?

Sorry if my question is broad...like I said, I'm not really an expert.

Wow! A nairalander working in optoelectronics, using MBE techniques and ultrafast spectroscopy. What a wonderful surprise!

You can also use perovskites in water splitting... basically as a photo activating catalyst, due to it's tunable bandgap and long charge carrier correlation length, to provide the much needed electrons (well, as radicals) to kickstart the water splitting process.

Well, it shares the same stability problems with organic conducting polymer materials. Hopefully, it's a synthesis issue that would be surmounted over time... like the toxicity issue that has basically been overcome by substituting the lead for tin as an example. It's just too promising to be discarded!

In the PV industry, of course they'll serve to augment other upcoming third and fourth gen solar cells. There's serious competition though, even apart from the traditional Si or III-V based cells. Dye sensitized solar cells is one, organic based (now with electron spin as an added degree of freedom to improve device efficiency is a growing research topic) etc.

By the way, I'm just a struggling PhD student trying to achieve my dreams! You guys need to come back to Naija and teach the next generation. Almost no one knows these things in Naija.

https://www.nairaland.com/3286519/communist-leaders-killed-250-million

There are other inherently evil ideologies based on atheism like Nihilism which makes a Nihilist show disdain for people who believe in God etc

Lol. Your argument is weak.

Your hypothesis that atheism necessarily leads to anti-religious based policies leading to an authoritarian society is flat out false. It's a possibility, just like how theocratic societies can also turn out to become authocratic, non-humanist, dystopian places to live in. Religion or the lack of it CAN ALWAYS be used as the basis of ANY authoritarian regime. Franco's Spain is an example.

Sure, atheism rejects a god, perfectly moral or not, and might make people more likely to be existential nihilist or to reject the idea of moral objectivism. But there's nothing wrong with that. Most people, as a result of the obvious advantages of open co-operation, naturally tend towards secular humanist and social liberalism ideals. Not the horrid nonsense that's your hypothesis.

Some people basically want a rule book covering every single step in life. What then is the fun in living if billions of people are to repeat the same thing over and over and over??

Of what use is culture if some religion is meant to direct every aspect of people's lives? It's like religion ultimately turns to culture and national identity.

This is very common in Islamization history. [Archaic tongue] Rules for everything. A way of life that erodes the indigenous culture of those who practice it, and over time they all see themselves as [or secretly see themselves and wish to be] "Arabs". Same, but to a far lesser extent, in Christian regions.

Most importantly, unlike culture and non-theocratic state laws which slowly changes over time, religious laws are almost immutable. This is the ultimate reason that I dislike most religions. I think it makes people have a very rigid world view, intolerant, and poor adaptability necessary for the survival of the human race.

I've also noticed most people can't keep their toilet and bathroom tiles sparkling white in this country. Most people have absolutely no idea that those stains that turn your white tiles and floor into cream-ish color are actually hard water stains (dissolved carbonates in hard water are left behind when water on tiles/floor dries off) that can't be removed by ordinary soap and water. You need something acidic: think vinegar + lemon for DIY cleaning liquid, or just buy the proper cleaning liquid for hard stains. Same goes for glass and mirrors - never clean in Naija homes.

Well, of course, this is because the entire country is neck deep in ignorance and it's evident in ALL aspects of our life.

This is not an excuse for development though, but Nigeria is a continent, too much diversity to exist as a unit.
Our socio-ethnic and religious diversity affect our reasoning so much we can't agree on anything.
To compete with the rest of the world, we need to restructure or disintegrate.

Germany has 79% Germans and 21% other ethnic groups.
60% of the people living in Germany (locals and immigrants) are Christians while the remaining 40% are spread over 1000 different religions.

Nigeria has 521 languages, with no single ethnic group over 38%. There's no majority of ANY idea in Nigeria.
Christianity nor Islam do not control above 45% of religious ideas.
There's nothing that brings 51% of Nigerians together, maybe football though.

So what exactly do you suggest? 521 single nation states? You think the multi-nation status of states are the cause of unaccountability of leaders, lack of human development, socioeconomic inequality, insecurity and injustice?

Religion / Re: Is It Only Africans That Believe In The Existence Of Ghosts And Witches? by Exciton(m): 2:40pm On Oct 29, 2017
From the posts on this thread, it seems that many wrongly latch on to this as reason for strengthening their belief in the supernatural. Legitimizing your supernaturalism stance based on statistics of believers is very weak to say the least.

Just because many people around the world believe something is true doesn't make it true. On the contrary, the fact that supernatural beliefs, once widespread in developed countries, is now relegated in favour of naturalism via the rise of rationalism being commonplace and the scientific method weakens the case for belief in the supernatural.

True, the statistics of supernatural beliefs is a worthy subject on its own but don't mistake it for proof.

Education / Re: Federal Polytechnic Oko Bans Beard, Afro Hair And Trousers, Students Reacts by Exciton(m): 3:49am On Oct 29, 2017
Daeylar:
An African country, banning Afro hair? Self hate, inferiority complex and utter stupidity rolled into 1 in a Nigerian polytechnic. this is worth looking into and reversing, what type of hair do they think Africans naturally have?

Look at all their ridiculous rules, trousers, afro and beard.
Trousers in this day and age.

Some nigerians love to act as if they are so disiplined and holy but in the end just show how stupid they are and end up disgracing the rest of us

It's a disgrace, a very big one

This isn't self-hate, you focused only on the afro issue... it's far much worse than that!

These ["mode of dressing" and other stupid] rules popping up across Nigerian universities and even in government agencies is direct proof that our secular Constitution is nothing but a piece of paper. Our country is a de facto religious republic. Religion has hijacked ALL levels of leadership in the country and this is the effect.

The fact that most people see nothing wrong with this blatant disregard of basic rights to freedom of expression guaranteed by our Constitution and that the ministry of education and NUC keep mum about such issues clearly shows the rot in our society due to religion.

Education standards, creativity, and individual self expression will nose-dive. We are basically planning to make our next generation very dumb people who expect orders and can't think for themselves - completely lacking in critical thought. They say our average IQ is 67, it will probably be 42 at the end of the century grin grin

This is what religion does to a nation when taken to the extreme.
