Politics / Re: What Measures Are The Northern Elite Taking To Tackle The High Level Of Illitera by Exciton(m): 4:06am On Aug 01, 2017
freshest4live:

Yeah, what l mean is you just teach those interested in agriculture, modern techniques of agriculture.
Even in the Western World, not everyone gets past what we call primary school, but they have vocational institute to pursue their passions or learn modern agriculture as the case may be, and they ain't voilent. So education(all the way) is not the major key. If you travel to Germany for instance, you'll see this is the case.

QueenOfNepal is right and you're wrong. The error in your reasoning is confusing higher degrees or any degree for an education.

The most important purpose of an education is to give you the ability to process information from your environment and apply critical thinking skills to make a decision or form an opinion. If you're unable to acquire this, even after a PhD, your behaviour is subject to popular opinion, to prejudices, to bias, to stagnant cultural beliefs, to whatever the media, religious and political leaders tell you.

One of the key diff between developed and developing countries is simply this fact: evidence based decisions -- they teach their children to form opinions themselves in a rational way; most learn this even before high school. Thus, even if they decide to acquire vocational skills for blue collar jobs, they still have the minimum critical thinking skills to avoid low-level manipulation.

If the North wants to advance, they need to crack down on Islamic clerics disseminating hate and misinformation, occupy the minds of the vulnerable masses with work (agric, mining, manufacturing etc), empower the kids with critical thinking, and very important: work with media (movies, news etc) to build new ideals for the society (empathy, a strong focus on love, curiosity, exploring one's environment in a scientific manner etc) all in a bid to make the populace less violent... it's also manipulation but for the greater good grin

The South needs this almost as much as the North though.

Crime / Re: Police Arrest 42 Homosexuals In Lagos Hotel by Exciton(m): 2:52am On Jul 31, 2017
davien:
I wonder how much more Nigeria will keep this up, homosexuality is completely natural(speaking from a biological point of view)..

There are always outliers in mammal populations and these are the homosexuals, asexuals, bisexuals etc..

It's not going to fade away as long as populations keep growing they'll be in the increase too,its plain unrealistic to try to reduce them because they are inevitable..unless we keep building new prisons and aiming for strict population control.

If it's a psychological ill, can anyone identify the improper brain state and if so correct it..if we were to even say for the sake of argument it's psychological the only proper treatment would be acceptance therapy at best because all other treatments would either damage the psyche more or make the subject suicidal.

if it's a crime, who's right is being violated? If there's a violation of rights under homosexual sex it would either fall into rape or molestation.. For those wanting to classify it as a crime against nature go take a look at your homonoidae family tree..and I'm not talking about ape cousins but actual human ancestors.. And taking it more from there if it's a crime against any God then it would be a personal issue not a state one as religion is mostly a personal thing and we as a country don't have a state religion..

For those fearing the gay apocalypse(gaypocalypse cheesy ) why not educate yourself with the knowledge that homosexuality if it were to be classified under a pathogenic disease(which is false because it's not pathogenic but let's move on) would have to be spread by heterosexual people to propagate so we straight people are "safe".. lol.

A crime against nature and yet everybody is a walking pile of imbalances in thermodynamic bookkeeping..

It's funny to me because eventually homosexuals would become accepted globally in a millennia, its inevitable.

For most what I'm saying is the mere ramblings of a "possessed Jesus hating secret gay atheist", to them all that think so,cheers.. keep chasing shadows while the real world leaps ahead progressing and snatching your unique endowments.

A thousand years is too far. Social behaviour of a group changes on a far shorter timescale. E.g. dressing styles before and after Islamization in many Islamic countries, how quickly we dumped our ancestors religion, system of government, feeding habits etc.

Don't mind the savages.

Homosexuality will become a fully acceptable sexual orientation in the nearest future -- 100 years max in Africa. In the far future, ideas that seem impossible will be accepted by our great-great-grandkids e.g. new concept of love that involves more than 2 people, having more than 2 biological parents, women having no need for a womb & not having to go through child birth, body modifications being readily available etc.

All this further blurs the line between sexes and ultimately leads to an androgynous society. grin grin. It's an inevitable outcome. It's good to read Sci-fi novels once in a while.

I may derail a bit on this which may be contrary to all the OP wrote.
In my own opinion, poverty is the problem with family planning in Nigeria. I was at a counselling center last week to and after all talk and bla,i was told to pay 2600naira for implano,1000naira for pregnancy test and 1600 for the drug, I may be able to afford it but can another woman who can hardly feed 2square meal afford that?
The UN claimed, family planning would check poverty, that is when there are less children, there would be more to go round everyone. I think they should make it free or highly subsidized so everyone mostly the targets "the poor",can afford it and be ready to go for it.

So, according to your logic, it's better for the poor couple to pop out another kid than to hustle 1600 per potency period of the drug?

The extra kid (or kids over the years) will surely cost more than N1,600 to care for over the same period (of drug potency).

Like I previously mentioned, it's these kinda poor decisions stemming from lack of critical thinking that's the problem.

Hehe. Of course I fully disagree with OP grin

Boxing is far from strength only. Boxing requires just as much technique as strength. Decision making is also key. There's technique to punching and movement requires great technique. Ali's movement is the ultimate example.

Basketball surely involves a huge amount of teamwork, technique and flair comparable to football that OP placed at the other end of the spectrum. Just as with boxing, no need to mention any teams or players. It's dominated by blacks. I'm sure it has to do more with culture than genes.

Football? Pele, the GOAT, is as black as it gets. Abedi Pele. More than half of every Brazilian squad ever. The Nigerian Atalanta 96' Olympics winning squad. Heck, loads of Nigerian youth squads. And I took care to mention players/teams that relied more on technique/teamwork than their strength.

That we (Nigeria) don't currently do well in football has more to do with organization, poor teaching/training facilities and corruption.

Other sports? Simone Biles - an artistic gymnast. 4 time Olympic gold medalist. Most decorated American gymnast ever. Gymnastics is a prime example of a sport that requires HUGE HUGE technique.

Tennis -- Venus Williams. Serena is more strength than technique but anyone who has watched Venus Williams play knows that she has arguably the best technique in female tennis.

The reason why there aren't many blacks in tennis is the same reason as to why there aren't in swimming, golf, rugby, cricket, winter sports etc. It's cultural. Absolutely nothing to do with genes, creativity, technique, skill etc.

Finally, a counterexample to blacks in weightlifting is this strongest man ever sport. It's fully dominated by Caucasians. So, it isn't genes. It's cultural. Some prefer a certain kind of sport to another.

My stance couldn't be further apart from yours. I advocate for compulsory quality education for the betterment of our society, not eugenics.

Eugenics is stupid and inhuman, rooted in the flawed ideology of Darwinism. People will always see reason as to why they are superior to another group; thus, rationalizing their choice to seek means to dominate/wipe out another group. So, IMO, in the long run you either end up with a dystopian society or a violent and unstable one. Either won't help the survival of the human species.

Family / Re: The Problems Of Family Planning In Nigeria by Exciton(m): 3:19am On Jul 14, 2017
The major problem isn't even the current high population that we have or the fact that it's growing. As long as the society is developing and advancing, the population growth trend follows a similar pattern - growth, saturates, then drops.

The problem is the HIGH PROPORTION of the unskilled/uneducated/illiterate (a fücking huge % if you compare with current education standards and not the Victorian era literacy standard that we use - being able to read and write). And the higher this proportion, across generations, the poorer the society becomes. That's the real worry!

Everything is down to poor education, poor skill acquisition. Patriarchy, irrational religious and cultural beliefs, and poverty induced chicken-like baby making, are all ultimately a result of poor education.

The enlighted one will realise that a male dominated society is of no advantage in our current information age, won't fall for stupid religious dogma, knows history and therefore knows that culture isn't sacrosanct, and can shape his/her culture. More of his/her time is allocated to problem solving, leaving little time (unlike the poor unskilled one) to make 30 babies etc.

As an example, poor sex education is probably our leading cause of "baby-mamas" in our part of the world. In our male dominated society, common sense should dictate that sexually active women should be on pills as it's their future that's mainly affected but even our prejudiced doctors will scare them against it, claiming horrible side effects; meanwhile, it's standard practice everywhere in the world.

So, you see, we are basically raising a 200 million stong army of poorly educated liabilities who lack the skills to dominate the world, to create value and wealth from her environment talkless of being able to survive extinction events, to spread, terraform and colonise other planets, or to attain the "singularity" dream predicted by futurists.

They, in turn, will pop out more babies destined to be poorly educated and lacking in creativity as their parents and teachers haven't the skill nor the knowledge to adequate equip these next gen babies. Hell, most Naija parents raise mental slaves, beaten into submission, always "respecting" (worshipping) elders, incapable of independent thought. This only serves to weaken our children.

A warning: democracy isn't very old, neither is the respect for sovereignty nor the charter of fundamental human rights. It will be naive of us to think these ideas will last forever. It's smart to make our nation strong and independent to avoid being dominated, or worse enslavement/extinction.

In sum, until we standardize our educational system, empowering our next gen with skills for survival - critical thinking, empathy, logic, creativity, STEM geared towards the next big things [like AI, nanoscience, Data Analytics, Genetic engineering, space exploration etc], the art of learning how to learn, history, moral and political philosophy, and economics. Until we start an intellectual revolution, make evidence based arguments and decisions, expel our strongly held "gerontocratic" beliefs etc, our society will remain weak and always in danger of extinction.

Life on earth is built around gravity and time.

Have you noticed that the both (gravity and time) are "naturally" negative? Yeah! Gravity ensures you naturally go down. It ensures that water naturally flows downward in a flowing water body. Time on the other hand doesn't ever wait nor reverse naturally.

That's why negative occurrences happen much more naturally than positive occurrences.

It's the basic inclination of life on earth. You can override it by working against it (hard wotk mehn).

So gaining weight is way more easier than losing weight.

Wait o, it could also be a mental thing. Gaining money is harder than losing money. So gaining weight should be harder than losing weight. But the reverse is the case.

I think if you can "mentally" make losing weight more negative than gaining weight, you WILL lose more weight easily.

I also think if you can "mentally" make gaining money more negative than losing money, you WILL gain more money easily.

It's all in the mind! There's a pattern here. If you can circumvent the operating principles, you will kinda "trick" the system.

The mind is the key.

That's what I think sha.

Gravity and time are both negative And this has 17 likes and 2 shares cry cry

Another falacy of generalisation there in bold.
Science is not a consensus of majority vote as you will like us to believe. The idea that a fictitious 70% of "scientists" agree doesn't make it final.

That's the beauty of science. Science is open to debate and Is based on facts. Oh an there is data collected from weather observation satellites in the US since 1970 which shows no significant increase in global temperatures in the last 47 years but the sierra club find it convenient to ignore that.

There are over 30,000 scientists in the USA including 9000 PhDs including the founder of weather channel,
pleading for an open debate on climate change. Why are they being bullied into silence by politicians and the media?

Hehehe.

Many scientists agree that conclusions based on experiments leading to the development of quantum mechanics are right. Same goes for theories derived from conclusions based on experiments in various scientific fields. So, you might as well find fault in all of these theories based on falacy of generalization since there's always a chance that, in the far distant future, a dispositive evidence can arise; thereby, falsifying the theory.

You confuse mathematical logic (where absolute truth exists) with reality, the realm of science, where the best approximation of the truth (an accepted working theory) is the best one can get.

Again, I repeat, a scientific theory is falsifiable. That which isn't is pseudo-scientific. That's why science is self-correcting.

Many scientists come to the same conclusion on global warming. So, it's simply gonna be accepted as true... until evidence against its predictions show up.

I guess that does it. Have a nice day.

The western media cannot bully the whole world to buy their propaganda. Global temperature rise and fall and it has regulated itself just fine through the ages.

Well Al Gore received a novel price Fyi for telling "smart" scientists that Co2 is a greenhouse gas-same Co2 you and I breath out, same Co2 that plants breath in.

He put together a team of political scientists to push this narrative but we all know that it's a scam. Well he made hundreds of millions off of it and his own house still connects to national grid. And that's why msm is angry that Trump pulled out of the Paris accord.

It's all about the money bro. Proponents of global warming are after the money. The planet is a creation master piece. I'm all for protecting the environment and cutting down on pollution but the idea that human activity is the cause of global warming is absurd. The Sierra club has refused to debate global warming science till date. What are they afraid of?

Hypocrisy is when Americans cry about global warming then outsource their production to China and India. Or are we not on thesame planet?

Bottom line. Technology will evolve over time. But demonizing today's technology because you want the market share to yourself is a no no.

Well, accept my apology for laughing off your Al Gore claim. He truly won a Nobel prize for his efforts to disseminate important information to the public.

But that's where it stops.

Every other thing you said is just the usual conspiracy stuff. And I can't argue with you because your arguments are only explanatory (at least within the time frame of our existence), they aren't falsifiable (i.e there's no logical possibility of designing an experiment to show that your claims are flat out wrong).

It's the same reason why it's a waste of time to argue with flat-earthers, alien visitor believers, that pastor can cure HIV believers, there is God believers etc etc.

What I mean is this: you will explain everything away to fit your claim. E.g. If I claim there's well recorded data supporting average temp rise, you'd respond by saying we're still in the temp rise regime and will regulate itself at a later time... a time which your hypothesis can't even make an attempt to predict - primarily because there's no data: the Anthropocene era is unique in the sense that it's the first time in the history of Earth that the inhabitants have had a huge impact on ecology and most likely the climate. So, your argument is un-testable, not falsifiable.

However, the opposite is. And many scientists around the world agree that the data supports the global warming claim.

Correction sir.
Inventing electric cars will not automatically spell immediate doom for the oil and auto industry as some will like us to believe.

All these propaganda is based on the idea of global warming which is a Fraud. Even Al Gore is ashamed of himself today. Afterall he said by 2010 there will be no glaciers in the Antarctic. Well we are in 2017 and the rest is history.

Studies have show that the average achievable reduction in global temperature will not exceed one tenth of a degree by year 2100 even if we shut down all fosil fuel usage by cars and manufacturing industries today!

Government cannot legislate an innovative into law. Meanwhile there is an advanced research into technologies that can produce cars that consume less fuel with more efficiency. Hybrid cars are just an idea of what's to come. Manufacturers will not stop making petrol/diesel engines. Both electric and fuel engines will be made and consumers will choose for themselves.

So enough of all these doomsday prophesies. Let the technology evolve in its own

I don't even know how to reply. Same reason I couldn't reply some other guy. I'll just comment on errors.

Paragraph 2 says global warming is a fraud while paragraph 3 talks about inevitable temp rise (based on studies from god knows where - citation needed).

I won't even bother to convince you that global warming is real or that fossil fuels are a major cause. Go and get good info online based on peer reviewed papers.

Paragraph 2 also talks about Al Gore like he's a Nobel prize winning scientist due to his great work on global warming. Lol.

Paragraph 4. I don't know it's purpose. Except the last 2 lines which I disagree with. Auto manufacturers will most likely discontinue production of petrol/deisel powered cars in the future primarily due to government regulations, associated subsidies, people's increased awareness and civil responsibility to keep the environment clean etc.

heo88:

Ok there's a few things that are worth noting:

- Up until 1973 Nigeria used the Nigerian pound which was in effect the same as the UK sterling

- Even when the naira was introduced in 1973, this propitiously coincided with the Yom Kippur war/oil embargo of October 1973 where the US' military supported Israel's attack on Palestinian territory.

In response to this, Nigeria and all the other Arab countries which were part of OPEC i.e. Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Syria etc. issued an oil embargo (also referred to as the 1973 Oil crisis) against the UK, Canada, Japan, Netherlands and the US . This hurt the aforementioned countries as they were dependent on oil to maintain their industrialisation endeavours, and the reduced output led to a four-fold increase in the price of oil overnight: from $3 per barrel to $12. Consequently the in flows of foreign currency outweighed Nigeria's naira reserves, leading to the naira being highly-valued

- As a result of the influx of new wealth, Nigerians, in particular Lagosians, developed an insatiable appetite for imported goods; demand which has largely remained unchanged up until the present day. Between 1974 and 1978/79 this wasn't a major issue such was the strength of the naira, but there was another oil crisis in 1979; this time it wasn't due to too little oil, but due to a global oil supply which outweighed demand

- Where the currency was hurt was that Nigerian officials at the time were embezzling money in the belief that the oil price would remain high (sound familiar in more recent times??) and due to the 1979 crisis, they effectively were caught with their 'trousers down'; essentially they weren't in a position to service the $ denominated debt which they issued during the 'good times'

- Nigeria first defaulted on its sovereign debt in 1982, then again in 1986 which led to an IMF bailout. One crucial condition of the bailout was that Nigeria devalued the naira (which can be seen on the chart) and switch to an Export-driven economy

The problem with this was that the IMF knew that the Nigerian economy was consumption-based at the time due to agricultural neglect, and if any of you did not know, IMF policy is dictated de facto by the US Treasury department. The significance of this, I believe, was that it was belated retaliation/retribution for Nigeria's foreign policy in the 1970s; Yakubu Gowon was at the helm in 1973 when the oil crisis hurt them, and even when Murtala Muhammad succeeded him, he maintained similar foreign policy by selling cheap/subsidised oil to fellow African countries (among other policy moves), which coincided with Nigeria not selling oil to them

- Last point and sorry for the long epistle, but the whole idea of a highly-valued currency isn't necessarily a good thing in a global capitalist economy. This is because maintaining its value indefinitely, particularly for a country like Nigeria, is near enough impossible. When you have a highly-valued currency, it discourages other sectors like agriculture; after all why will farmers grow produce when Nigerians will just import the same produce for cheaper than it cost the farmers to grow? (rhetorical question). This was exactly what discouraged agricultural and other merchandise production for exportation (whether primary or secondary commodities), and nothing is being done to solve this up until today; Fulani herdsman and lack of adequate government support has left many an agriculturist in a vulnerable and anxious state

Okay, so I'm worse than the layman when it comes to economics. But from what you've said, can I safely infer that we were never really a rich nation and the only reason our "golden age" was golden was because of the war induced oil scarcity at the time and not because the older generation did anything special like being innovative and hardworking (hehehe... I'm laughing as I type this!)?

Lol. We are arguing if it's possible in 8 years. Like it matters if it's 8 or 20, when it will most likely be a reality in 25-30.

It's like the current Naija youth are as useless as the older generation... those ones are confirmed failures.

The important fact is that the world is changing and we've gotta plan to acquire the required skill set, at least for the sake of our children.

I'm sure there's no place in the country currently into or have contributed anything of worth to the research in the fields of organic electronics, perovskite solar cells, energy storage, hydrogen generation, quantum computing, artificial intelligence etc. That's the future.

Naija universities and impostor academics just dey scam students and their parents. Especially those private ones collecting millions. Hehehe.

We're still heavily focused on getting those O&G jobs. Continue. Our children or children's children will be poor.

GeneralOjukwu:
Yoruba Obas should say something about this rituals thing.

Osun and Oyo States especially. It is becoming too rampant.

Igbo Chiefs too can address the drug trafficking thing.

Who knows if these are the actual perpetrators ? They might have been tortured to confess. It's unusual for NPF to quickly solve a case

In a country with a functional Censors' Board, these are the type of topics Nollywood can focus on, not useless storylines

Saying or doing something about rituals necessarily means educating the religious public that money rituals and other associated supernatural crap are not real.

That's the last thing the typical religious Nigerian will agree to.

Until we are ready for proper education and rational thinking, enjoy the insecurity and barbarism for the sake of our untouchable religious beliefs.

Some people are saying the two don't mix above, but I just want to be empirical value it.

Tradition is not equal to religion.

As long as there is no standing rule on the god/God an ọba can worship, no problem.

Our gods in Yoruba land are actually a path to Olódùmarè (God) who is the Alpha and Omega.

The medium of worshipping is not the point, worshipping is the point.

Ọbas belive in God. Either it is through Sango, Obatala, Ifá, Muhammed or Jesus is another matter entirely.

Lol. Ajayi Crowther and others did a sterling job.

The average Yoruba christian logic:

1. Olodumare == Yahweh but,

2. the colonialist's religion (i.e set of rules to get across to this same god) is superior to the religion of his ancestors, AND

3. is sure of eternal damnation if he sticks with this "inferior" religion of his ancestors.

Oriburuku logic.

Like Nigeria, Nairaland is very abnormal.

It sensors the most harmless of words (most especially, biologically standard words like brëåsts and pēñis) but it's perfectly okay to post pics of roasted, crushed, mangled, decapitated (add your own) humans... women and children included.
