Power generation is worth inviting partners for, so too are textile industries, and general manufacturing of all kinds a stuff. Its appalling that so many people here are reducing opposing views to ''enemies of progress'' and related BS. The general mentality on this thread shows why this country has grown poorer and more backward while the rest of africa gets it act together. Till this government can slow down the craze for property and start investing in REAL things that can employ and grow wealth it will be only known in thirty years time for beautification and little else.
Thank you very much. Some have put themselves in the position of lord and master of defending the Eko Atlantic project at all cost as if they had a meeting with the developers or as if they even know the whole truth of what is happening with the project. Because of this, they have developed an us against them mentality, as if they have more to do with this project than the worst pessimist and we have people cheering them on as if this is a boxing match. My original comment was replied with hostility, why? Because I gave an opinion, if this is the young generation that's supposed to take Nigeria to a new direction, then I don't see change for a while.

Dharavi

An urban redevelopment plan is proposed for the Dharavi area, managed by American-trained architect  Mukesh Mehta.  The plan involves the construction of 30,000,000 square feet (2,800,000 m2) of housing, schools, parks and roads to serve the existing 57,000 families residing in the area, along with 40,000,000 square feet (3,700,000 m2) of residential and commercial space for sale. There has been significant local opposition to the plans, largely because existing residents are due to receive only 225 square feet (20.9 m2) of land each. Furthermore, only those families who lived in the area before the year 2000 are slated for resettlement. Concerns have also been raised by residents who fear that some of their small businesses in the "informal" sector may not be relocated under the redevelopment plan. The government has said that it will only legalize and relocate industries that are not "polluting."

Lets get back to history and giving you some education. Dude, I am serious it shows you never left naija, these grand statements

London had megaslum in victorian times, most of east london was a slum , http://www.victorianlondon.org/houses/slums.htm
Where did I say otherwise? I said that London of those times had light and water Lagos is struggling with now. Post some of those Victorian slum buildings and compare them with Makoko.

Yinkaboy:
As to comparing it Mumbai, its a perfect example, the largest slums in the world are in Asia mainly Mumbai http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharavi, as my boy have stated  they problems with power and water, ere our friends at the bbc can tell you http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/8138273.stm.
You have the gut to post water shortages in Mumbai when there's no running water in most of Lagos?

Yinkaboy:
As to building a new city, they have  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mumbai,

Get educated! shocked
They've built a new city in land, or they've built an extension to the city. Was the city built in 3 years or was it not developed over decades?

nulldev:
A power cut = Power supply not meeting demand?  grin you lot keep cracking me up. No power failures in Mumbai,  grin
Even the article that was first posted said there was 24hr supply of electricity to the state. Even if it didn't there's nothing for you to celebrate about because light does not reach Lagos how it reaches the slums of Mumbai, or maybe Mumbai buys as much generators as Lagos.

The eastern suburbs of Bhandup, Mulund and Kanjur, and Thane and Navi Mumbai, which were getting 24 hours of power supply under the zero power cut scheme, are likely to face power cuts again, starting Saturday midnight.

There are power cuts in Mumbai - not only the slums. Again, avoid making hasty comments. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Power-cuts-return-to--City-s-eastern-suburbs/Article1-535438.aspx

Analysts say that the availability of power in Mumbai is around 2,350 mw against the demand of over 3,000 mw. The deficit is increasing annually.
The thing is slums in Mumbai get power more than Lagos those, and they have running water, picking out parts of a  searched article does nothing to help your argument that Lagos is in a position to diverge from its most pressing issues.

This is Mumbai slums with a working train system:

We in the East face the same problem of horrible governors, because they hide under the shroud of the inept arseholes in Abuja and use the same divide and rule tactics you allude to. However, such tactics would be ineffectivel in the coming Republic of Biafra.
It seems like people have moved away from the idea of the old Biafra (and even the name) and are looking towards their own indigenous lands instead, e.g Igboland.

Wow-eze

Do know your history? Have you ever left naija? These place had slums just like Lagos, before they developed, most cities did up until 40 years, when Lagos was small. Lagos is having the same problems as victorian London, the main difference is that UK has industralized, and naija is industralizing just like mumbai, Sao Paol, Jakarta and Manilla, hence the need for a new island.

The largest slum in the world is in mumbai, and they basically built a brand new modern city as well. Its called New Mumbai grin
Victorian London had running water and light, it had proper housing, even in its slums. New Mumbai is another city altogether. Lagos overall does not even have the level of maintained electricity Mumbai slums have, and you want to build a new city? Do you know that there are no power failures in Mumbai slums? Did you know these slums get running water? Keep comparing Lagos to Sao Paulo and Tokyo.

Right, artificial land? used for business?

The Isle of Dogs is situated some distance downriver from the City of London. The area was originally a sparsely populated marshland before its drainage and planting in the 13th century. Dutch engineers reclaimed the land 17th later urbanised,
Are you telling me that the isle of dogs development was on the same scale as Eko Atlantic extending a whole city out of London? Was the isle of dogs not already there, and if it was a developed abandoned plot, how does this counter my point?

You mean the state should have said to the developers, instead of injecting tens on billions of dollars and creating jobs for hundreds of thousands of Lagosians, why don't you take over the state's responsibilities and go build road, schools and hospitals which of course the state is doing on a daily basis. Is any other state in Nigeria delivering what Fashola is delivering? Your mindless argument is very mute.
I like the way you dodged where I actually said housing and building this city in land. Nice. And what jobs are being created that wouldn't have been created if this was inland? If they made this city (some people are saying it's not a city) on the mainland would it not beautify Lagos and give it a skyline worthy of taking pictures of?

babapupa:
Btw, how many state in Nigeria and even in Africa have a light rail system under construction, a ten lane freeway with BRT and rail system (First in Africa) under construction? Please tell me.
All your looking for is an ethnocentric argument, maybe that's all you can contribute and that's why you can't be objective.

babapupa:
Running your mouth off as if the state is not attending to it's core responsibilities because they did what governments all over the world do (Attracting investments and jobs to promote development and broaden it's tax base.) is not only silly, it's backward, ill informed thinking and irresponsible way of thinking.
I would never hear someone from a developed country defend their government as if it was their family. I don't know why you people act as if your family own Eko Atlantic or if you've got more to do with the project than someone from Cameroon. You'll start to insult someone for something you have no input to, for a state you've probably done nothing for.

babapupa:
I seriously hope non of you people gets behind any desk to administrate the lives of animals talk less citizens of you villages.
I hope you'll start to understand that developing a country has nothing to do with showing off.

Yinkaboy:
Ezeagu,

No logic, did you read the new lagos master plan? Ha Ha? No! There are already project earmarked for inland as well. Fashola, wants modernize all of the city.

This is best avenue without destroying peoples home and people complaining of land grabs, like Maroko!
You're supposed to explain it to me before telling me I have no logic. That's usually how a logical statement goes. As for the inland city project, please start a thread.

OAM4J:
Exactly, like i told ezeagu, he must be a genius to think the Governor should simply tell any investor that want to build a 'Paradise-City' in Lagos state to either support/invest in his 'pressing' state projects  or go to hell with his billions
You people are not serious. Your trying to tell people that the government did not attract investors. I'm still asking you people whether the Atlantic sea was private or whether the Lagos government does not have a say about its own shores. Maybe that is why lots of ships are lined up in front of Lagos docks for weeks trying to off load, because the government doesn't control its shores? Your talking about "telling investors what to do" when you will be telling the investors to build housing in the future, right, or no, they'll just build what they like. Lagos won't "tell investors what to do", which means securing a deal apparently, like Eko Atlantic did. Again if Eko Atlantic was made inland, what benefit would it not have over having it in the sea?

Mariory:
Reply you for what reason? I'm in no mood to repeat what others have said. However, seeing you gnashing your teeth and foaming at the mouth because of this project is entertaining. Bítch-slapping that mouth at the same time is just a bonus. grin

Elaineh:
But Ezeagu, how many times have paddy_lo and co. stated that this is NOT a government project? It is being undertaken by PRIVATE companies for their own benefit. It is not the responsibility of private corporations to ensure that all of the state's roads are tarred, that its slums are developed, etc. Building this city on the mainland would require razing people's property, destroying people's homes, rerouting existing roads, etc. Is that what you'd like to see happen?
Yes. 'Projects' and housing towers in the West are raised down all the time, and the UK is making sure to remove most or all of these types of buildings. Lagos does not have to even demolish these slums in one go, the buildings built there do not even need to be made of expensive material that makes the building long to build, Haiti has homeless people in tents and they are building houses, those tents may be better than some peoples houses in Lagos. . . . .

Elaineh:
Certainly, I don't need to explain to you why that would be a problem.
What will happen?

Elaineh:
Are the private entities who want this city realized supposed to wait until the Lagos state government has hiroshimad an acceptable plot of land (twice the present size of VI, no less) on the mainland before they can start to build?
If by "Hiroshimad" you mean develop the infrastructure of Lagos and then clear away unwanted unmaintained buildings, put a proper plan for each district and then ask them to come and build a business district, than okay.

Elaineh:
Meanwhile, the Tokyos, Dubais and New Yorks of the world will continue to leave Lagos even farther behind in the dust.
Why didn't you add the swinging gardens of Babylon or Atlantis to your list.

Elaineh:
I have never seen a situation where adding acreage to a country's existing territory by pushing back the waters and building on an area that was once just the deep blue sea is considered a problem. It blows my mind.
But it won't blow your mind that this project is taking place next to Lagos, Nigeria, where electricity and water is a privilege. If you want to compete with Tokyo, where is Lagos housing towers, where are they that warrants finally pushing into the sea like Japan has. Have you looked at a video or photos of Japan where they have things like capsule hotels or where every other building is a tower? That is if Lagos hasn't passed Tokyo's standard yet.

Mariory:
I don't think it matters how many times he is told that. The guy is just arguing for the sake of it. You just need to read some of the nonsense he is typing.
Reply me directly with an explanation of your view point, or don't type at all.

like every city and region of each state you have visited all over the world being same?  huh

BTW, how do you define development and progress? let me guess, 'repeating the same thing over and over again'  huh
I define progress by the ability to not have children manning boats to get to school, I define progress by the ability to at least tar up all your roads or get some 'private' company to do that before you start building districts in the Atlantic, I define progress by the ability to adapt to certain situations, e.g develop the swamp slums into something that could be tour-able, before building distractions in the sea. No one has said what this project has over any project that would have been planned in land. There is space if you fix your place up. I don't know any other reputable city whose inhabitants share the same standard of living as Lagos, yet their government is building cities in the sea without focussing solely on the most pressing problems.
