drag_on: http://www.thoughtleader.co.za/williamsaundersonmeyer/2013/10/19/saaf-from-fighting-force-to-flying-farce/

Not only is the UN giving the Rooivalk its first battleground test, but crucially for the South African Air Force (SAAF), it is also paying to do so. All deployment costs, including fuel and ammunition, are borne by the UN.

That’s an unexpected bonanza because the SAAF can’t afford much actual flying and fighting. A dozen of those Gripens are now mothballed because the SAAF has neither the money to fuel them, nor the aircrew to fly them.
The SAAF’s budgets are so strained that its pilots struggle to clock the flying hours needed to keep their ratings current. There are only six pilots qualified to fly the Gripens and they clock barely a tenth of the 250 annual hours each, which European militaries consider the minimum necessary cheesy cheesy grin shocked shocked
Most of the SAAF’s 30-strong light helicopter fleet is grounded because of the “almost total lack of flying-hour allocation”, according to the authoritative Defenceweb site. Defenceweb writes that this “precarious financial and personnel situation” also led to the humiliation of the SAAF managing to keep its specialist maritime helicopters aloft for fewer than a dozen hours, during last month’s joint peacekeeping exercise with United States in the Eastern Cape. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin tongue tongue

http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/SA-troops-in-DRC-well-equipped-SANDF-20130830

"You then have to tell the UN how much it is going to cost them because you don’t want to fly it [the helicopters] on the taxpayer’s account. shocked shocked shocked We are not sending any pieces of artillery but we will send the Rooivalk if the UN agrees."

Mgwebi said the world body had yet to pay for the further deployments it requested.

"They have requested a battalion from us and we have given them [the soldiers]. We [also] have three Oryx helicopters already on the ground," he said.

"When you give them, it speaks to the issues of reimbursement. We said 'we give you and you reimburse the country'."

He said the UN was required to sign documentation before additional weaponry was sent to the DRC.

"We have said to them we are ready and this is what it is going to mean to you [financially] as the UN, the rates. The ball is in their court, not in South Africa's," said Mgwebi.
I even wonder how is the Nigerian military faring with only half the SANDF budget, if it is facing such challenges. You want to rule Africa with such a small budget, smaller than that of ordinary municipalities in SA. All Nigerian military equipments are either second hand or low cost made specially to suit their small budget. Your country can never run SANDF, it will run dry before it could even think of it. Our national budget is four times larger than West Africa combined together. Shame on you!!
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m):
Augustine Again: oh ! if that is your wish, then all south african nmilitary weapons imported and quoted as delivered by SIPRI ORD database, are hereby cancelled too and labelled as non-existent, and that includes all the remaining Exocet missiles on your valour frigates apart from the 5 you test firef, there is none left.

also, all the SIPRI quoted 25 IRIS-T missiles on your Gripen jets will be deemed as only 6 units delivered for the 6 Gripen jets that have qualified pilots.

same for your submarine torpedoes and starstreak anti-aircraft missiles, also your Hawk jets too are not up to 24 units, only 8 Hawks....get it ?

fool cheesy

.
Why are you now behaving like a stupid, everybody knows that Nigeria has 4 old scrapyard Mi-24's in their inventory. Now show us where is says Mi-35's were delivered. As for Gripens and Hawks, the whole world knows that SA has such machines because they are being seen frequently flying such machines even on the net you can google. .

Gunships are like mobile car, you place your order and buy them immidiately and will be delivered in a due course, unlike ships, aircraft carriers which will have to be build first.

Are you talking about sanctions where all western nations will obey or do you think SA will still be in existence if those countries actually abided by those sanctions? Cos all these you mentioned were built for you by Israel, France, germany, Britain etc
Lier!!! South Africa even today still proves to the world that it has weapon manufacturing potential. The former white apartheid scientists were very technical and skilled in the field of medicine, chemical warfare, nuclear engineering and weapon technology. That's why our universities today are one of the best in the field of nuclear engineering. Stop telling people lies, the only ally of SA during Apartheid was Israel.

Umkhonto R also called block 3 with an extended range of up to 80 000m has already been developed. Due to budget constraints denel looks for a partner for large production of this masterpiece.

Just send your low-cost Chengdu F7-Ni in Soweto to have a taste of it and they will tell you thereafter when your pilots arrive home on body bags.

Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 2:14pm On Nov 26, 2013
agaugust: even the 20km range umkhonto missile is NOT YET in service. still under testing, it takes time to complete missile tests to avoid failure in battlefield engagement. so please dont ever post the fake imaginary 80km variant on this forum again, you hear me ?

also, NOT every DENEL tested weapon or munition is in service with south african military.

you only have what you buy. nigerian army too pays for DICON weapons before we can induct them into service.

dont think government arms company will give free weapons to any military anywhere, USSR tried it and her economy collapsed.

lastly, there is NO Umkhonto missile ever built to range of 80km, it is just a proposal and hope for the future.

the longest range Umkhonto missile ever built in this world is only 20km and still under testing.

"Denel Dynamics, the guided weapons division of South Africa's Denel, carried out the first live-fire tests of the land-based version of its Umkhonto naval surface-to-air missile (SAM) between 1 and 3 October.

The tests also saw an Umkhonto-IR destroy a target at 20 km for the first time, a feat achieved after recent modifications to the Block 2 variant"

nigeria has ASPIDE beyond visual range anti aircraft missile with range 75km, don't feel too bad about naija's missile superiority, after all nigeria is a senior brother to south africa.

soweto's air defence missile capability is still much far behind that of lagos, live with it because you cannot deal with it.

you like to suck your thumb like a toddler, okay go ahead cheesy

.
What do you understand by phase1 and phase2 in any project. The project is ready to be used anytime South Africa engage into war. As we speak Umkhonto missiles can be fired from GBADS. Denel (SA government owned company) has plenty of these in stock. Remember, this is not Roland which can just be jammed by an ordinary fly and which cannot even fire at night when its radar has been tempered with. This is UMKHONTO IR

Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m):
Umkhonto Surface-to-Air-Missiles can now be fired through land based launchers, the GBADS, meaning that they can now be used by the South African Army.

Here are the variants of Umkhonto:
1. Umkhonto IR B1(Range 12 000m)
B2(Range 15 000m)
2. Umkhonto ER (Range 20 000m)
3. Umkhonto R (Range 80 000m)

reason they are not afraid of anybody buying any weapons we dont have in nigeria.

i think the only hurry now that nigerian military wants to quickly settle is the beyond visual range ultra modern AKASH 35km range land based anti-aircraft missiles purchase from india.

this will give us more air defence range against countries like Egypt since Roland SAM range is about 8km.

with the coming AKASH SAM, coming Type 056 Stealth warship, coming Pipavav Tiger class Stealth warship, the existing PL-9C air to air missiles, Otomat anti-ship missiles, beyond visual range ASPIDE anti-aircraft missiles with 75km range for air defence at sea, Bofors F-77 40km range artillery, APR-40 mobile Rocket artillery with 45km range, Palmaria mobile artillery with 30km range, ATR-42 Surveyor aircraft, Spy Satellites in orbit.....

even Egypt will think twice before attacking nigeria.

South Africa wont even try it, they will look for another way of committing suicide at home in soweto . FACT !!!

the south african long range sniper shot is fake , according to your own SANDF army general. we posted that source many times here at that time.
SANDF members are not supposed to commend anything that concerns UN activities. The UN has spokesperson to do that hence no South African has the authority to over step such boundries. The snyper shot is a reality chief, even the dead officer of the rebels will confirm that to you that he was wiped out of the face of the earth from a long distance that he could never imagine can have an impact. SANDF spokesperson are not fools like Nigerians spokesperson who would go and tell the whole world that Shekau is dead. Our spokesperson are first briefed by intelligence, and thereafter they are being adviced of whether it willl be worthwhile to overstep boundries and comment about activities that involve another organisation. In that case, they are more likely to play ignorant.

nigerian army was not invited to the war by angola because the angolans were marxists/communists by national ideology and they naturally wanted soviet communist support from russia/cuba so they invited cuban army to fight, also using the advantage that russia never allows europe and america to hurt cuba, they chose a super power USSR/russia to counter the super powers Britain/France/America that was supporting south african military.

Countries voluntarily support who ever they want to support based on what they believe in.

It is not that Nigeria could not see that South Africa was bullying Angola and Fidel from many miles away gave his selfless support, irrespective of whether was communist or not, he needed your support, for which you failed to offer, because your very country was also in turmoil. For your information we have even more than 5 million whites, that number is still very small. Well, you are right the means of production is in the hands of white people because majority of them were unfairly empowered over black people for more than two hundred years. Surely you cannot expect such an imbalance to be redressed in a wink of an eye, like what Zimbabwe has done. SA navy frigates are still alive and kicking in Cape Town and have never been sank by any low cost chengdu polished machines. you always write comments and make claims without any source, yet you tell those who have sources to go do research.

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/missile/row/aspide.htm

show us source to prove your own claim that nigerian aspide is 45km range, dont tell us stories from your son's story book, show us your source !

Superior with weak defence. How does it help? South Africas valour frigates are loaded with one of the best air and sea skemming missiles defence system.

Check the one above is attacking @Agaugust low-cost Chengdu F7-Ni and that one over there is sea skemming to collide with @Agaugust superior missiles.

it said the Rooivalk is NOT best helicopter gunship in the world ! it puts it down to number 8 out of 10 and puts the Mi-24 Hind at number 9.

Rooivalk is NOT among the top 7 helicopter gunships in the world according to your own source cheesy

http://www.wonderslist.com/10-best-attack-helicopters-in-the-world/

anyway, i would rather put Hind on number 8 and put Rooivalk on number 9 because Hind has superior air to air combat capabilities and the troops carrying and ambulance/medical functions that makes the Hind a multi-role combat helicopter while Rooivalk reamins single-role combat helicopter.

your source did not consider that Hinds advantage in his rankings. in my frank opinion, the Hind is the number one combat helicopter in the world and it has no direct NATO or American competitor . FACT !!!

in case you dont know how great the Mi-24 Hind is, read this below...

http://www.airforceworld.com/heli/eng/mi24.htm

stop advertising Rooivalk b.u.ll.s.hit helicopter to us here, nigeria will not buy it, only soweto air force will fly that half french tin of sardine cheesy

.
It doesn't matter where you rank the Rooivalk, for so long it makes the top 10 list and is way far beter than Mi-24 hind.

Rooivalk is much more sophisticated and advanced than your Mi-24 which is now an old cargo.

Rooivalk has some qualities which are unmatched by even Apache. This machine is dangerous boss, "izo ku bulala wena barry" beware the Rooivalk.

agaugust: nigerian police is not military. nigerian prisons warders are not military. dont mix their numbers together.

only perhaps about 90 nigerian soldiers have been k.illed by boko haram in a long four years of hide and seek battle against an 'invisible' terrorist force that dresses as civilians in the day and transforms into boko haram at night.

south african army lost 15 soldiers in only one day of battle against a clearly visible enemy that presents its forces as seleka rebels.

nigerian army, the best in africa, has k.illed the boko haram leader shekau with world class sharp-shooting in dare devil face to face, hand to hand, man to man jungle/mountain combat.

south african army has not even fired one arrow with bow, or throw one zulu spear near the window of seleka rebel leader mitchel djotodia...see him boasting against jacob zuma and all south african nation in the photo below....your army has zero courage to face the man tongue grin cheesy shocked

Nigerian police and prison, yes they are militarised. It shows you know nothing about your country. Wonder why police are also used to fight Boko Haram, it is because they are military and that's why they are wearing beret to signal military culture. It was not long that SA police were militarised as well, because all along were structures of public service. They had to change their rank structure to that of military, and now almost all the police in Africa are military. Do not downplay the numbers, BH killed over 3000 nigerian uniformed soldies some of which were hidden away from media reports.

agaugust: south africa is NOT leading satellite game in africa with your $70,000 cube satellite that i can put in my shokoto trouser pocket cheesy

nigeria's satellites cost $13 million for the first and $57 million for the second one, and we are your masters in that area.

nigeria's next new giant satellite is already being built by nigerian space engineers domestically at home.

http://www.ibtimes.com/nigeria-its-not-just-spam-scams-petro-terrorists-west-african-nation-also-has-viable-space-program

south africa built that cube of sugar size satellite to show the world that the real size of a south african brain is equal to a tiny cube of st.louis sugar i put in my cup of gari and drink cheesy

.
Nigeria does not have cube satellite, FACT!! All that they have are big buses on space. SA is only one of nine countries in the world to launch nanosatellite and you should be grateful that SA respresent Africa in visually everything. When people look down on Africa and say that Africa doesn't have this and that, SA introduces it in Africa and level the world. Africa never hosted world cup showpiece before but SA convinced the world that Africa can make it. Olympics have never been hosted in Africa before, but the olympic commitee seeing that S.Africa is the only country in Africa to be seem capable, with peace, order, stability, resources, infrastructure, etc, came down to SA to beg them to put their bit forward and represent Africa since the continent has never hosted one. It is often these things which make the likes of Agaugust to remain eternal enermies of the progress made by Mzanzi. @Agaugust keep on asking themselves how can it be that SA always achieve this big, while the GIANT seems to be lagging behind.

The giant of Africa is just a name and does not signal that it dominates everything in Africa. South Africa is way far older and ancient than Nigeria and we have some buildings which are far older than Nigeria herself. Nigeria might have bigger population because family planning might have been the concept which was introduced late in them.

agaugust: Rooivalk's systems are fully published because soweto is broke and hungry for export sales that may never come.

Mi-24/Mi35 Hind's systems are not fully published because there are many different versions and modifications based on what each country has. Russian, Ukrainian, Belarussian, Algerian, Nigerian, Ethiopian versions are all different in terms of internal systems.

first advantage of Mi-24 is that it is a multi-purpose helicopter that can change roles from air to ground attack gunship, air to air defence, cargo transport, troops transport, medical ambulance all for a price of about $12 million.

Rooivalk can only function as a gunship for air to ground and air to air combat, finished, and so little for a price of $40 million.

the above are the main reasons no country in the world wants to buy the Rooivalk helicopter, and even south africa that produces it can only afford to buy 11 units.

by producing the Rooivalk, DENEL made a very foolish mistake as all south africans always do cheesy

second advantage is that Mi-24 can carry air to air missiles just like Rooivalk contrary to what you south africans believed.

Rooivalk is built to carry a 6km range air to air missile, while the superior Mi-24 is built to carry a 40km beyond visual range air to air missile, so with its long range 48km radar and long range 40km air to air missile the Mi-24 hind will shoot down the whole south african air force including the Gripen jets, see proof below :

An improved version of the R-73M, the R-74M features fully digital and re-programmable systems, and is intended for use on the Su-30MK and Su-35BM, but It can also be carried by Russian attack helicopters, including the Mil Mi-24.

photo of Mi-24/35 helicopter gunships in abuja showing what a Rooivalk cannot do...power of nigerian air force !

.
Rooivalk is ranked way above MI-24 go and make that research. Your knowledge about military hardware is limited to jealousy. Rooivalk is the best Gunship in the world and in fact it makes top 10 list. SA designed Rooivalk and what did Nigeria design. Oopps!! Naught, not even a scrap. So stop arguing like a child and get a sense in your head with facts.
