You don't need a crane to lift those on 1 or 2-storey buildings. Do they use crane to move overhead water tanks unto towers? I have seen it done. They lift them one at a time. Instead of having carpenters nailing the work in place, they use nail guns. It makes construction easy. Truth be told. Our people can afford all these. A tool pays for itself over time. It is just that the artisans are more interested in stomach infrastructure than investing in tools.

Any vehicle that delivers wood to your site can deliver these.
Remember the only tools needed here are nails, hammer, saw and most importantly measuring device. As I stated, give the same tools to Nigerian workers and they will still find ways to screw it up. Heck! Give them cranes and vehicles, they will still screw it up. I don't believe it is lack of equipment/tools. They take pride in bad workmanship.

That's the problem with Nigeria. When price of materials goes up exponentially for whatever reason, it stays at that point.
The cost of this very important building material 'cement' went up sharply because of increase in dollar to naira exchange rate, now the dollar to naira has crashed, cement price hasn't come down as reports from above suggests.

Even where the price of roof and roofing materials are coming down, it still has little significant because you can't roof without building.

Nigeria traders are shylock fraudsters ready and willing without mercy to pounce on their customers at any given opportunity all the time.
I no know whether God go bless them for their unreasonablilities.

I fell victim to this and the asshat aluminum roofer just put the damn aluminum on even though the wood underneath was shoddy. I'll be redoing the entire roofing when this was is worn out.

With much love in my heart for all my readers, i would like to talk about one important element of the home which is tile and today, i will be taking us through the process of calculating how many Cartons of Tiles i would need for my room, apartment or home.


How Many Packet Of Tiles Will Be Used For One Room?

Today i will be using a One Room Apartment as a case study and would also like to write this based on my environment, Nigeria.

I am going to write based on Nigeria because some few things i may mention here may not apply to other countries. But i know most times what is applicable here in Nigeria also applies elsewhere.

So you'd like to tile your home, but do not know how many packets of tiles that would complete the project and would also not want some tiler to come and over estimate the whole thing right?

Ok, Here we will try to make this simple for you...

The first thing you must understand or know when calculating the number of packets of tiles to purchase for your home is the dimension of the room or apartment you'd like to tile.

Let me Use a single room now...

A room measuring

L = 2.5m
W = 2.4m

Now having measure the length and width and obtained the figures above, lets now get the area of the entire room to be tiled

How To Calculate The Area Of A Room

Now Area = L x B
Area = 2.5 X 2.4
Total Area = 6m2

What this means is that the area of the room is 6 square meters and so, how many packet of tiles do i buy for this project?

In order to be able to calculate the number of packets of tiles to buy, you must first know the dimension of the particular tile you're buying

I love using the 400mm x 400mm tile because its easy to calculate, this does not however mean i cannot handle any type of tile out there.

Floor Tiles And Dimension
Here in Nigeria, Floor Tiles has the following dimensions:

400 x 400
400 x 250
250 x 250
300 x 300

For the sake of this tutorial, i am going to use a 400mm x 400mm tile.

OK....

Now, For every Packet, There are 12 Pieces

Now you need to know how many square meters there are in one packet of tile.

How to Calculate the area of a Floor tile

You can also go further to know the area of one tile by simply multiplying 400 x 400 = 0.16m2

The Area Of One Packet Of Tiles

Now since the area of one tile is 0.16m2, there are 12 tiles in one packet

Therefore the total area in one packet of tile would be 12 x 0.16 = 1.92m2

Now in one Packet of tile, we have 1.92m2

How many packet Of Tiles will be just enough for my room measuring 6m2?

In Order to know this, quickly divide 6 by 1.92 (6/1.92 = 3.125)

The number of Packets would be 3.125

But we also know that there is no way you'd wanna approximate a packet of tile ans so you'll need to buy 4 packets of tiles for your Room.

Things You Must Have In Mind When Tiling Your Room

Please Note: You're also going to need some extra piece of tile for the skirting since you need skirting to make the work a perfect one.

You are also going to Buy 2 Bags of Cement (Depending on the thickness of the mortar)...

You are also required to hire the services of an experienced Tiler...

I decided to tile the garage apartment as opposed to continue to wait for an outfit that will agree to do a stained concrete floor for me. Incidentally when we finished the tiling my tiler then informed me that he also does stained concrete - aaarrrrggghhhhhhh

I bought tiles that are manufactured by the Chinese in Nigeria. I could have spent days lamenting on finding Italian, Sicillian tiles or whatever and at the end of the day finding out that they were made in Nigeria. My tiler, a Togolese, recommend these tiles, they call them Boko Haram, they are super thick comparable (a few still broke). The tiles are covered with a thin plastic film that is peeled off after install.

They are N4,500 per box of 4 (heard they were N3,000 a few weeks back )

Also of note, there is a clear difference between plans made in the comfort of my air-conditioned home office in California versus the reality of having sweaty balls in Iwo Road Ibadan while arguing vehemently on price with Chucks

That last part is not just done by Manufacturers, Banks have been doing it for ages!
Infact, l am aware that it is what is keeping some banks in business till date. They get the Dollar at a very low "official rate" from the CBN but instead of using it to process Form M of businessmen and importers, they call in Mallams and sell it to them at close to Black market rate, making huge profit.
I once did a Video recording of this shameful act of "Round Tripping" at the GTB branch off Adeniran Ogunsanya in Surulere, some years back.
I had a dorm Account with them and told them l needed to pay GBP for Children School fees and was ready to present documentation for the forex transaction.
They said they had "No Forex" to sell....but one of them asked me if l wont mind buying from Mallams at Black market rate and that they would introduce me to a trustworthy mallam! Right there before me, l videoed them making brisk transactions between Customers and themselves, with the Mallam as middle man, right inside the banking hall, using the Forex that they got from CBN.

I wanted to prosecute but eventually, l just Negodi the whole matter as the 'timing' was not okay for me then and the Clout that l am about facing head-on, had "brothers" that l am still subject to, at that time!
