Webmasters / Re: What Do You Think About Internet Service In Nigeria? by franko2: 5:43pm On May 02, 2012
Sweatshirt:

What do you mean?

My HTC Sensation is is extremely fast. It's actually as fast as my broadband, so what are you talking about?

My HTC is capable of hitting download speeds of 14.4 Mbps (1.8 mb/s) on a 3G network, not Wifi but 3G

So it actually has nothing to do with wether it's wireless or not. Smarty pants. I'm in England so this proves Nigeria sucks when it comes to these things.

@Sweatshirt, i mean that u need fibreoptics cable to have fast broadband. Whether or not your phone is HTC matters not much. If you are in england, the least u can do is to use ur fast internet ser vice to google what am talking about.

In england, the "fibre" depends on BT cables, and Virgin cables, whiich is what the mobile networks piggy-back on to fasten their service provided.

Why do u think TalkTalk, Sky and PlusNet in UK always insist on you having a BT landline for them to provide you fast internet service?

I am not sure why this is difficult for you to understand. In return, your understanding of the basic concept, will help you remove the fog from those in naijas eyes.

Yes, there are 3 fibre networks now in naija. But, the cost of taking it to the "last mile/km" is usually borne by the state, as no network provider wants to do it - no economic returns in the short term, and they have to report yearly to shareholders and give them dividends. Doing "last mile" agbero work for hopeful payment in heaven is not exactly a private business model of note.
Webmasters / Re: What Do You Think About Internet Service In Nigeria? by franko2: 5:42pm On Feb 22, 2012
It can be quite annoying when those who dont know anything, go ahead and pronounce guilt, conveniently ignoring there own ignorance!

Anywhere you go where you have truly "fast" internet connection, it has to be broadband which is primarily delivered by "cable" aka fibre-optics networks. In other words, they must have cables (as in electric-type telecommunications cables) dug usually underneath the earth, which would have direct links (usually by sea) with the outernational.

In Nigeria, all we have is 'wireless', which basically is bounced off your mobile telecom masts. There is a limit to what these can do. Anywhere in the world, where you rely only on your wifi (from your mobile phone) to power the internet, you get terrible sppeds at very high and uneconomically astronomical costs.

So guys, make una chill abeg, talk sense. With this level of poor education and ignorance masquerading as information, no wonder Nigeria is in the pits.

Mtschew!!

PS

Make una curse tire, una internet spped no go increase. NO NITEL or NO GLO or NO FIBREOPTICs = NO FAST INTERNET!!!!

Nice one jarus, for those of us needing superhuman inspiration to take the plunge, this tonic is wkd! I second the more cement to your elbow greetings!!

trisurface:

Commendable, Jarus.

If I may, some cash saving tips.
1) Get in quotes several months ahead. excepting cement, its a myth that Building materials fluctuate widely in Nigeria. By getting quotes in ahead, You keep prospective contractors for different jobs on their toes & waiting for you instead of the other way round. People will give you a quote in January & execute the job in August without variation. This is my personal experience.
2) Spend some time educating yourself. 1 hour in a plumbing/Electrical/Paint shop will save U money. All bills are made up of three Parts. Materials Cost. Labor Cost. Contractor's Overhead/Profit. Educating yourself can save you money on the third.
3) Prequalify your Contractors. have repeated meetings. Bring them to site often as you can. The ones who will mess you up will show their hand sooner or later.
4) Timing is critical. Contracts negotiated within certain times of the year are cheaper. Eg, Do your plastering in December. Most bricklayers are idle then. Dont paint in December. Good painters are booked to their eyebrows then.
5) Reduce everything to units of measurement. Use cost/m2 as much as you can.

God will stand by You.

very interesting this!!

Acidosis:

Sir, I hope you've been there to see things yourself. There is this story where a man sends lots of money to a contractor and the contractor in return ate the cash without building anything instead he sends beautiful pictures from the start to finish another man's property. The contractor is not a relative but a blood brother.

very true, make room for naija factor
Religion / Re: Psalm 109: Why Is It In The Bible? by franko2: 8:01am On Oct 20, 2011
@ThiefOfHearts, this is a very fantastic post, and have to commend you for it. It exposes the dangerous depths (on one hand) and beautiful heights (on the other hand) to which people, especially Nigerians can take a piece of material and interpret or misinterpret it.

Our capacity to take religion - both christian and moslem, and use it in extreme, without knowing the best context to view, analyse and understand it has been one reason Nigeria is still in the depths of deprivation. Religion comes with what can be best described as a health warning - USER BEWARE!!

ThiefOfHearts:

An understanding. A discussion. I know many of you are zombies that are so afraid to question things and have legiitimate discussion due to fear of being "struck by lightening". My thread isnt for those cowards.

However, i think heartthief sometimes undermined the excellence of her work by going to some ajegunle level as with this outburst, but hey! we are all human,

Family / Re: Is Boarding School Beneficial To Children? by franko2: 4:03pm On Oct 07, 2011
horny4u:

I used to feel this way as i went to boarding house.
I have a younger sister that did not and the difference is clear while i am fiercely independent and an expert at bending rules and getting by them, knowing and creating shortcuts by default , closed up with a solid street mentality, i can blend either at oluwole ( agbero) or hilton (posh). We were always cooked for so you donot learn to cook, sew and home cleaning per se until later.

My sis is not like that but she trusts people more, she is not as materialistic (she is ambitious though), she lives by rules, polite, not ruthless, she does have a mind of her own but she is not rugged, she is not as laid back and does not know how to create shortcuts , she is not a hustler yet she is smart, she is posh as thats all she knows, she is just as sound academically. She is only 12 but she can cook, sew, clean etc

I have seen some people who go to boarding house and it brings out the best in them and some people it awakens a beast in them
For me my boys will go to a rugged or military boarding house but my girls will go to the poshest day school as i feel skills i learnt in the boarding house are more valuable for boys but girls need a different skill set, plus i will prefer to monitor my girl and teach her how to pronounce NO in capital letter as its the most important word a gal can learn.
I want to know all her friends et al. For my boy i will advise and step back a man has got to find his way.
Old fashioned but na so i see am

Just my opinion !

U hit the nail on the head in ur analysis. if i have my way, i will send my sons to naija boarding school either from form JS3, or from SS1, while i will prefer the girls to go from home, but only if their mother is more of a fulltimer, which is no longer the norm these days - the girls need to be soft, gentle, human and learn more people skills, while the boys need to learn how to be rugged

i attended boarding school myslef, and it stood me in good stead to weather a lot more ups that mount kilmanjaro, something which i feel i possibly couldnt have done had i not attended rugged bendel boarding haas!

------

Swift SMS:

Is boarding school beneficial to children? Yes and No

Yes: Because for me I was lazy as a child, we had relatives and stewards at home who would cook, clean and wash for us. The only chore I remember doing back then was washing the dishes and filling the water bottles with drinking water, nothing more. Well boarding school changed all of that, I learnt how to wash my clothes plus senior students ownangry. Fetch and carry water from a long distance, sweep/clean etc. Boarding school practically transformed me from Princess Lazy to Queen Hardworking and it taught me how to take responsibility for myself.

No: Because I was so miserable  cry cry cry for the most part in college from JS1 to SS2, can you imagine that. I was miserable because of the mean senior students we had, who still had power to punish you even in your SS2. I still remember a good number of them by name after all these years because of how cruel they were. In fact they were terrorists, there was no point reporting maltreatment in my school, as you are getting back to the hostel after class you will chop s-h-i-t, because more seniors would have ganged up to deal with you for reporting one of their own. It seemed like the teachers, principal and vice were all helpless or couldn't be bothered with what went on btw juniors and seniors.

Seniors had more power than the school authorities put together (and to think this was an all girls school) until we got a new principal who was even more mean than the seniors and had zero tolerance for their bullshit cheesy cheesy cheesy, unfortunately I was already in SS3 and couldn't benefit from the succour she provided to junior students, but she wiped the whole school into shape starting from her staff to students.

Having suffered misery for so long I am not really a fan of boarding school. But I think it will be a great idea if the school has a principal and staff who do not condone maltreatment of junior students by senior ones.

Yes, in my boarding school those days, the senior students were sadistic animals, which should not be allowed in a civilised society so, there will always be room for improvement in this regard,,,some seniors tried to move on me on the man-love-man side of things but, for where, ?!!!! i guess if ur not cut out for that, it just wont happen, although, with benefit of hindsight, i have to say, my dad should have specifically talked to me about it all through the time, because its only through sheer willpower and a total lack of interest did i manage to avoid joining such nonsense

i heard so much about akwa ibom and akpabio a while back, so much that i went to stay with a friend in uyo at d earliest opportunity, and i came away with mixed feelings

1) ibomites although openly welcoming, are still a bit clannish, they take sabotaging ones progress common with d average naijaman to another level

it is very common for people to open eating and drinking joint as d popular biz in vogue and, with exxon-mobil being a dominant player in naijas oil and gas industry being almost entirely basing their production in akwa ibom, it is scandalous that they do not have any discernible operational base in d state, mind u - isaid 'operational base', because yes, they have oil wells all over but, run everything from lagos and abuja, d staff who work with them just hop on a helicopter to visit platforms when necessary and return to eket, ph, lagos or abuja - they would never get away with doing that in rivers, lai lai

as a matter of fact, when jobs are advertised for servicing exxon-mobil in ibom, a particular requirement is usually that u are based in onne, surprise, surprise!!! why? i no sabi oooo

ibomites, wen d oil dry, una go hear weeeen ooo!!  please, encourage non-natives to show u a thing or two about creating value in ur society, everybody will benefit more from that

A guy needs his space. So do ladies.Being in relationship is not license to spread your tentacles everywhere, and anyhow. It's annoying, very irritating and misusing each other.
There's a level in a relationship where you don't need to check phones, social networks, and monitor movements. The level where you don't care if he has your pic on his desk or not.
You have a deep sense of security since you speak the language of the heart. You rest! Maturity should tell you that you cannot fbi your partner cz if he decides to cheat he will do it without u noticing. No I would not put my partners pic on my wall and I wouldn't want mine on his either.
His wall is his space with his friends. Before we met the wall was there so why should I dominate and choke it? I would want my space as well so no need for each other's pics cz we aren't even married and even if we marry its still his social space. That is how I view it.
If I need him I know where and how to get him.
I would only expect this kind of behaviour from an adolescent.Because she wants to show her man off to her friends. But a grown up? pardon me.

Fokativ

I admire your defence of Amaechi. Last time i was in PH, i could tell Amaechi had the best of intentions just like u said. One major problem is that our standard in Naija has crashed to minus 20 level. So, in the land of poor town planners and civil engineering designers, the few around will obviously have nothing special to show for all the money they are paid.

Amaechi and others like him (including Fashola) were given only 4 - 8 years to fix a problem that has existed since Naija people started to construct their own roads (WITHOUT AN INTEGRATED DRAINAGE SYSTEM)  so, am not surprised it packs up after 2 years max!

The DRAINAGE SYSTEM in PH as a whole has to be RE-DESIGNED, BEFORE any serious effort is made to BUILD major ROADS, else. more iwayi go enter grand!!!  lol

the question, to my mind, should have been; is it wrong to marry a lady older than you?

that way, i think the issue would have been better shown in its ridiculousness

in the Naija context, respect is paramount, and the conventional way and wisdom accords the man headship of the house, as in okwu si ogwu, oga kpata kpata so, if u are convinced u love each other well enough, and shes demonstrably ready, able and willing to accord seniority and deference to u the man, in the home hierarchy, then;

Kisteshia, we have just about 200 million people in Naija, and maybe just 1% of that (2 mill?), if they tune into nairaland - is a whole lotta people. So, your likely to find all sorts on here at any one time, usually bored, others just looking to piss on anything that sounds good.

Dont take them serious, and in future, consider twisting the facts in such a way as to get u information u need, without actually saying it so truthfully direct. Then, maybe then, will u stand a chance of reasonable comment throughout. Oherwise, not much can be expected from these lot!

I advise u simply go ahead, all the while bearing in mind Naija has as many good people, as bad people. Your guy, could just be any one of such john doe's - as u may likely find at your regular supermarket.

The table below shows the data of the the volume of sales made for some of the commodities exported in 2010 of which sesame seed sales is just $157million due to huge post harvest losses.
Commodity Total (USD)

dont believe the men and women here who are saying all these things - in naija, if the man can afford to build (or rent) one house/flat for his 1st wife and children, and can do same for you, then no problem

i have a european woman, and a naija woman, the european woman is ok about it

the naija woman can be a bit (politically) difficult but, its all good - just costs a lot of money though, but is made easier for me because i live in my own house, my kids from both of them wifeys come to me, and i dont live with any of the women too, so, makes it easier - costs money though

goodluck, have ur own mind, dont believe in these people here dont care about u, only u can care for yourself - dont 4get that

only people who have never been to the seaport (talkless) of airport, feel such inferiority complex to wanna consider a change of name,,,it reinforces ur complex when u thi nk people would (laugh at u?) assess ur intellect or 'coolness'? based on ur name? waow!!

i changed my silly "christian" to my okoro name, simply because it gave the oyinbos an extra bone to chew before they consider approaching me for anything, and guess what? it worked purrrfectly!!!  no more frivolous and fake chats from them,

help yasef ma guy, wake up, ur bloody black african like me, no matter wich egungun masquerade english name u carry, any better person with half a brain sees u for who u are, and if they dont, they shud be binned - u guys must be from iyana idimu or someplace like that to be so embarassing, na wa ya!!!

For those who have got in touch re this ad, please note the word EXPERIENCED.

It is very vital and non-negotiable. Fortunately, such things can be easily verified and no amount of fast talking or chancing will help, if you are not experienced.

Thanks
