Health / Re: New HIV Antibodies only In West Africa by Freesia(f): 12:00am On Feb 08, 2012
This is new to me but doesn't shock me as much as when I found out about the Exposed seronegative individuals (ESN) and if I remember correctly when I saw it on some documentary a few years back they specified that many people from Gambia have this ESN "genes" as well as some Northern Europeans ?!? and here I was thinking that no one is immune to this deadly virus!!!

@ Saga
I have noted you mentioned about some black girls in the UK with terrible attitudes, you will find these anywhere both here and back home. The good news is I know some really well bred and not to mention down to earth  and stunning London Naija girls with high profie occupations as well so all is not lost, just broaden your horizons,Like someone earlier said they might not all be walking around with flashy outfits  smiley
Computers / Help ! Fairly New Notebook Keeps Going Blank by Freesia(f): 1:01am On Feb 03, 2012
Hi All,

My Notebook is fairly new and I'm suspecting it's faulty. It keeps going blank a "grayish color when it's on idle.I traveled with it recently and I'm using an adapter and this is happening every 5 minutes !! I have set the power options to" Never switch off when idle" but nothing has changed what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance

Her list is tall and ridiculous. She wants a Yoruba woman but not one from Ijebu or anywhere in Ogun State.

What is this whole fuss of Ijebu people apart from their dialect and the old adage that they are said to be" thrifty spenders" which by the way seems to be actually dying out with the younger generation. Can someone enlighten me on this because I hear it a whole lot but I have come to a conclusion it has to do with more than just money and the dialect

The last time I checked the writers were not holding a gun to the actresses head

Go and watch catch a fire or good bye bafana

Might just do that  smiley
If she's as good as you say,I'm not sure why she didn't act Winnie Mandela story

Name me a better Nigerian Actress than Terry Pheto?

Bimbo Akintola who still remains one of my favorite and in old Nollywood i will go for Liz Benson although some may not agree, but for her time she was articulate and did a good job.Terry is speaking a native language in Totsi,I would like to hear her speak english

I believe Charlize Theron is South African!!!

AN OSCAR ACADEMY WINNER!!!!

You believe SA produces better actresses than Naija? Where could the "black" SA actresses be?? if back in the day Steven Spielberg cast an unknown actress outside south Africa to act opposite whoopi Goldberg in sarafina why did they recently have Jennifer Hudson act as Winnie Mandela??

abeg No be the same JK that was living in her CAR before the book became successful. Im sure even if the book wasnt such a massive success, she would have made the same rules.

yep that same J.K
That book raked in millions and you know when her level changed so did her confidence smiley
but broke or not I'm glad she stood by her principals and didn't let H.wood bully her into changing anything

JK Rowling commanded much more respect at the time of the First Harry Potter movie than any author in the world ever will.

How many tens of million copies did the series sell anyway?  Chimamanda's novel was not a bestseller although it did very well in literary circles.

Absolutely !! That first book on it's own gave her enough power to make decisions that directors would normally make on behalf of a writer

ThiefOfHearts:

In other words they followed her word. it's HER book. she makes THE rules. No matter the "production company". JK wanted the movie to stay true to her book.

Now what is stopping Chindieme from commanding the same respect?

"Commanding respect" as a newbie in the entertainment industry comes with a lot of consequences and risks. She will learn as time goes, hopefully she will be able to fully finance her next movie and thereby call all the shots

Yeah Genny was good in Emerald, but I have to agree with Sisi on the lovemaking scenes she's been in, she looks mechanical. grin Nollywood actresses don't know how to seduce anyway. Genny is good acting the bossy female without coming across as overdoing it. But her intimate scenes are terrible.

Yeah she looks uncomfortable doing love scenes but chemistry plays a role too, have you watched her acting with Muna Obiekwe?? or with RMD?? Good Lawd if she's not about chewing their tongues!!

why didnt they change the books and have Harry Potter be American? or even Black?  cheesy

J.K Rowling had a say in the Potter Movies. The British and Irish characters had to be played by Brit and Irish actors and not Americans.I remember reading about her getting some flack for this but in the end Hollywood had to obey

I bet the producers have their own reasons for casting Thandie,(biz as usual).I guess this will be  more of a Brit Flick than anything else as she isn't that popular in the U.S,more reason why they should have taken a risk and cast an unknown actress of African origin, there must be a few African actresses in the west-end surely

I wonder if they approached Sophie Okenedo who  IMO would have been a better option than Thandie. All in all I'm yet to watch a movie that replicates the book's basic story line, Hollywood or not, producers, directors etc never completely get it right when it comes to" Book to movie" so I will leave Olanna  and Kainene to my imagination!!!

Me: He's in Africa
Anna:Does he come here everyday, and then goes back to Africa?
Me:No He has to get on a plane to get here
With the most serious face she looked up at me

Anna:Okay, aunty I fink it's good idea you get yourself another daddy who will see you everyday
Me:I want to keep my daddy for ever
Anna: A puzzled look on her face
Her mother had to tell me she didn't mean where is my father but she meant where is my boyfriend,Oh gosh kids and how they think is phenomenal

Jenifa_:

Last week the weather was warm and I wanted to go running but I felt extremely self conscious about doing so, therefore I stayed home and ate a pint of vanilla-strawberry ice-cream. Why did I feel self conscious about going for a run? Well, because I hardly see any black people running out and I didn't want to be stared at like a crazy person  lipsrsealed

do you live abroad and have something on your mind that you think might resonate with other members? be free to share.
This is not a self-pity thread. feel free to humor yourself or rant as you wish.  grin

I know how you feel,i just used to put on my I pod blast my music and go for my run when I lived in a predominantly white neighborhood

martyns303:

am a piloting student in SA, in kimberley. if you know anything about SA, then u will know that blacks here dont do very well. the resturant i go to is usually filled with whites only, the only very very few blacks are helps to the whites, me and my friend seem to be the odd ones, everyone start staring at us when we walk in, its very unconfortable. they literally look at us and will be whispering within themselfs till we leave, its the closest resturant, i have to think twice and lazy up and down befor going there when am totally hungry. most other things i do seem to defy the social norm here, sumtims i go 2 d gym and am d only black guy, except i go with a white friend, else its only me doing my thing.

My brother always keep this in mind "They are intimidated by you not the other way round" They are wondering how you are affording anything in their so called "borrowed territory" deep down oyinbo's in SA know that SA will never be home but they continue clinging to it.keep yourself focused and don't forget why you are where you are

My Favorite phrase to Oyinbo's when i was in my teens was "don't you know it's rude to stare,You need to stop" the look of surprise/shock on their faces was always priceless  smiley
