In what may be one of the biggest scandals in sporting history, a former sports chief has been found guilty of sending a side all the way to Paralympic gold that had no disabilities at all.

Fernando Martin Vicente selected the Spanish basketball squad at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics, only for one of the players to claim soon after that they – as well as other Spanish representatives in Sydney – were not physically or mentally deficient.

“Of the 200 Spanish athletes at Sydney at least 15 had no type of physical or mental handicap - they didn't even pass medical or psychological examinations,” Carlos Ribagorda wrote in magazine Capital days after the Paralympics concluded.

Now a Madrid court has finally taken action, fining Vicente £4,600 and ordering him to return £120,500 in Government subsidies received under false pretenses.

Eighteen others, including members of the basketball team and other authority figures at the Spanish Federation for Mentally Handicapped Sports, saw their charges dropped on Monday.

The Sydney Paralympics were Spain’s most successful as they finished third in the table behind Australia and Britain with 107 medals.

The Spain basketball team won the intellectually-handicapped gold, but Ribagorda explained that no real tests were carried out, barring a physical of just six press-ups.

The final team, though featuring two players with IQs below 70 as required, was otherwise comprised of 10 players posing as mentally disabled using fabricated medical certificates.

In their opening game, the Spanish basketball side led China by 30 points at which point Ribagorda claims the coach told the players to “move down a gear or they will figure out you’re not really disabled”.

Vicente resigned as head of the Spanish Federation for Mentally Handicapped Sports after the Capital article was published, though he argued that he was guilty of errors in judgment rather than any pre-meditated schemes.

"If someone wants to cheat, it's difficult to detect. It's easy to pretend you have little intelligence but the opposite is difficult," he said when he announced his resignation.

there was no liberation of telecoms industry - we just experienced a technological age where the use of mobile phones was necessary. many west african countries were already using mobile phones which then means even a monkey in power would have created an enabling environment for mobile phone usage in nigeria.

stop giving credits for policies that are quite normal. there were several telecoms companies operating in nigeria before the mobile technology era in 2001. multilinks started operating as far back as 1994 and their services were way better than NITEL. then you went on to say video machines were irrelevant when it's as clear as daylight that was the vehicle that made nollywood what it is today.

And how did Satelllite TV or Video machines create jobs or improved the life of the common man in Nigeria. I experienced poverty and never had to use satellite or video machines beside other reasons. However, the liberalization of the telecoms industry in Nigeria (which broke NITELS monopoly) created numerous employment opportunities for our graduates, gave them a social status and allowed struggling families to own mobile handsets.

If you are now comparing the GSM revolution achievement with satellite TV or video machines - I'll leave the world to judge who the stark illiterate is!

Biblically speaking, In Matthew 5:37 Jesus said to his disciples, ”All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” It would have been good if Pastor B admitted or denied instead of allowing his church members gossip and wonder of the truthfulness or otherwise of this issue.

Legally, it is within his prerogative to either say something or say nothing. He owes no one any explanation unless he's arraigned in a law court.

Finally, everyone is responsible for his/her own salvation. Both the deceived and the deceivers are inexcusable before the judgement throne of God if they miss heaven. Therefore, to the COZA members and family, work out your own salvation and be careful to whom you trust the issues of your eternal soul!

I'm not from Christ Embassy, but when I was getting married in another Pentecostal church, we did pay a little amount of money (I'm not sure it was compulsory) but for the officiating ministers and other people taking care of the church premises to celebrate with us. They will buy and prepare their own food since most of them will not be at the reception. If you don't have it, they will still wed you but it's just good they celebrated with us after they have officiated the entire service. I never complained, not because I had the money but for the joy that I was getting married and I appreciated all the efforts of the church...I was willing to do it. Tell your friend to stop complaining, if he has it, let him pay, you don't do it twice but if he doesn't, let him talk to the church to accept whatever he can offer.

@Peterugwu, I think you should be honest with yourself. Have you done the bolded yourself? If you do it in sincerity, you won't come here and be defending your church. I can confirm to you that I prayed aggressively and sincerely for 2 weeks because LORD CHOSEN was about to make me a branch pastor. I don't want to say much on this in public but the revelations I got (not once, but two to three times within the two weeks prayer and fasting) made me run as far as my foot can take me.

@peterugwu, my advice to you is to take heed for your soul whether you are the deceiver or the deceived, you are inexcusable before God on the day of judgement if you miss Heaven.

My counsel to Lord's chosen is simple. Move on and if Linda's testimony is false, God will fight for his church. The Church does not belong to Pastor Muoka (the church is the body of Christ and he'll always defend his true church from the attacks of satanic agents.

My personal verdict - Linda's testimony is GENUINE! Did I pray before reaching this conclusion? Yes - I truly did and take careful responsibility for what I've written.
