Bayo also made his $$ from Naija. His friend Dr Hakeem Belo Osagie was a special adviser to Naija and they went to the same school… connected him to a US company handling LNG project… he got drafted to handle the project because of his Naija background, accounting and law degrees.

Hard to find any Naija rich person who made money without Naija connect.
Tope Awotona of Calendly. His wealth has nothing to do with Nigeria. There are equally rich Nigerians, especially second generation, in the US who generated their earnings without a Nigerian connection.

TravelRe: Where Is The Most Difficult Place On Earth To Gain Citizenship? by Gerrard59(m): 1:31pm On May 15, 2024
Singapore*

It is tied to race. So, this means as a black person, it could be hard to be a naturalised citizen except one has contributed immensely (usually economically) to the country. There are black Singaporeans, but they became citizens during the 1990s. From 2011, it became harder, especially for non-ethnic Chinese. The farther your racial group historically has with the country, the less your chances of being a naturalised citizen.

Foreign AffairsRe: Biden Announces New Tariffs On Chinese Imports by Gerrard59(m): 9:33am On May 15, 2024
This is not the first time the West led by the US is fighting a peer competition when she cannot compete. The same was done against the Japanese, yes, Japan, the US' best buddy in East Asia. Japan was in the same position as China today with its semi-conductor firms dishing out chips like mad. Japanese automakers were producing quality cars at affordable prices. Japanese banks were dominant throughout the world. The US was angry and complained bitterly that its products are not allowed into the Japanese markets (a lie). Japanese weren't interested in buying American products for cultural and geographical reasons. For instance, American cars are way too big for Japanese roads and streets.

Japanese semiconductors were dominant in the industry because of their efficiency and affordability. The same rhetoric against China was peddled at the Japanese. A Chinese man was even killed by an irate American because he was thought to be Japanese. It was that bad. Mind you, at this time (1980s), Japan was America's major ally in the whole of Asia. America collaborated with the Japanese to rebuild the country after bombing her twice with nuclear weapons. Japan was, and is, literally America's baby. Yet America was aghast at Japan's economic growth and forced it (Japan) to sign the Plaza Accords.

So, if Japan could be treated in such a manner, how much more China?

Our people should learn to read history biko. Read the Plaza Accords, Centruy of Humilation, Opium Wars etc.

As for EVs, presently, no Chinese car is being sold in the US as the carmakers are opening factories in Southeast Asia and South America. There is even a plant coming up in Hungary and Mexico. Guess what? American lawmakers complained to Mexican politicians why they allowed Chinese automakers to build factories in the country. Imagine questioning a country for accepting foreign investment in manufacturing o. As for Western automakers, and even their allies' vassals' automakers in Korea and Japan, NONE can withstand their Chinese counterparts in all aspects of EVs. Yes, China is that dominant. EVERY Western automaker who wants to make an impact in EV MUST collaborate with a Chinese company to be able to compete. China is that dominant, out of sheer hard work, persistence and determination.

My advice to the Chinese has always been simple: play the long game, invest in other countries. The West is less than 20% of the world's population and landmass. Play the long game. Develop the technology and sell it at cheap prices. Yes, as it is, Chinese EVs are almost like pure water yet have the highest quality, tech and designs.

Play the long game!

LadyExcellency:
China is not US match in world politics. Religion is getting the worst part of you. Imagine choosing China to lead world affairs with communist ideology. The US made China what it is at present.

The projects the Chinese are doing in Africa and heaping debts to the grandchildren and African future is what the USA gives out as grants and aid. Putin hopes for the US/Russia relationship to improve rather than putting his hope in the BRICS.
Gerrard59:
The West is doing it to persuade citizens in the developing world to loathe China and to an extent the Chinese. I don't want Africans to do the same. We stand a great chance in benefitting from China than the West. In fact, everyone everywhere does. It is because of Chinese business interests the Americans are now planning an Americas' Policy in Congress for the US to trade more with Latin American countries. Before now, why did they not trade with folks in their backyard? Why is it that when China comes to trade, the West believes it is also the best time to trade? Look at the purported railway in Angola backed by the US, it was solely because the Chinese were expanding the previous railway they did in the '70s in Tanzania. If the Chinese didn't move there, the US wouldn't. The same applies to Southeast Asia where American companies are announcing investments solely because Chinese businesses have invested significantly in the region. Expectedly, Southeast Asians view Chinese more positively than Americans.

People think it is by preaching kini kon hUmAn rItEs that would put food on someone's table or provide living standards. Or it is by forcing men to fvck their fellow men or confuse young children about which gender they belong to.

I have demystified the loan aspect here: https://www.nairaland.com/7801886/multipolarism-versus-hegemonism-great-power

We owe Western nations and institutions more than we do to Chinese organisations. That is an undeniable fact. People can see the result of Chinese loans: railways, airports and roads. The average Nigerian o, not one phonee speaking Nigerian with a fancy degree from a fancy university in the West tucked somewhere in VI, who in his/her past-time parrot American culture wars on TwitterNG while struggling under hot sun in the queue to purchase petrol.
Western media have really got Africans, both young and old, on a cuckold. I was once like that, but being an open-minded person, I started to question certain hypocritical actions taken by the West towards other countries. I have no stake in the Middle East wahala, but the West's atrocities there are unimaginable. Yet the same people bemoan Russia's actions in Ukraine. On one hand, you are OK with China being a low-cost manufacturing nation, but as China rises the value chain, you get angry.

People should keep an open mind and read from various sources. Our people should question things and stop taking every word by the West, and even China; yes, China, hook, line and sinker. Question EVERYTHING.

Within the past few days, I have come across quite a number of brilliant Nigerians who attained high scores during their secondary school and university days. The majority work and reside in the US and have excelled financially and career-wise. I read the conversation you had with Grandstar, and it begs the question, why can't these policies be implemented so that the general populace becomes prosperous? Why is our own so different?

Like, there exists a class of brilliant people who can be appointed to run the wheel of national economic development, yet the country dey as e dey. I also concede that not all are actually intelligent as most of them who were active on Nairaland supported Buhari in 2015 like Alore, who later fled leaving his 700K salary. There have been MBA, and PhD Nairaland members who argued that subsidy does not exist and gave
Buhari an unflinching support.

When giving your tithes, don't sound it trumpetically to her anymore. Don't talk about it again with her.

And when you give to other people in need, tell them not to sound the trumpets to anybody and you yourself don't let her know anything...

Let me give you and example, there is this brother, he bought 5litres of palmoil, which he wanted to give his mother on a visit, him and the rest of his family( his wife and the two kids) ... Unluckily for him, he could not make it, he was called up from work with an urgency. So he told his wife and kids to go, probably he will join them there. He told his wife to give his mom the palm oil. Do you know that, his wife took half of the oil in the 5litres gallon before she delivered it. She wasn't happy for her husband to give his mom the full gallon of palm oil. It was the first son, a boy of 15 years that challenged her on what she did, she shouted at him not to put mouth in anything that doesn't concerns him.

The man got to know, since then when he wants to give strangers anything, including his parents and siblings. He doesn't tell his wife.
The true taste of marriage is after its first five years. Men should marry those who like genuinely like them and their immediate families. If I was the man in question, I would keep a grudge.

David Hundeyin visits Nairaland every day. There are CEOs and wealthier folks who are members of Nairaland. Nairaland is a microcosm of Nigeria. Anyone who wants to understand how Nigerians think and behaviour would know more from Nairaland than TwitterNG or Reddit/Nigeria (very unrealistic bunch of miscreant are there). Invictus was a Nairaland member and even the FBI referenced Nairaland. Any Nigerian who wants to japa learns more from Nairaland than anywhere else. Any Nigerian who wants to get a perspective of living abroad as a Nigerian learns it from Nairaland not Snapchat or TikTok or Reddit.

There are many Nigerians who are exchanging valuable contacts and connections via Nairaland. I got my first job from Nairaland. The CEO was a member. There are Nairalanders running multimillion businesses which they started from using ideas and connections from Nairaland.

Any Nigerian who disregards Nairaland is one overfed, overpampered, unrealistic, Woke-culture lovey-dovey fellow who most likely lives in Lekki where s/he drinks soakaway water and inhale generator fumes, while chanting mumbo-jumbo American culture wars rhetoric.

Marina Hotel is very expensive. I checked the rates once and my eyeballs widened. shocked

More about Singapore I wrote here:

Gerrard59:
Alcohol is available. East Asians drink a lot of alcohol, and it cuts across both genders. However, after a riot by mostly Indian labourers due to working conditions, the Singaporean government introduced a time limit when alcohol could be served in certain places. She also increased the tax on alcohol.

Yes, it is freakingly safe. The rules are rules. Everybody must follow it. Singapore does not bend its rules. However, I was chatting with a Singaporean doctor and told him the reason Singapore is safe is largely because of the rules. Because when compared to Japan which has rules too, but are largely culturally inspired, Japanese can behave the way they do even without any government law. But remove the laws in Singapore, and an increasing number of people will break them.

This is true. One of the cleanest cities on the planet.

Very true. You cannot hide from the government. E no dey possible.

Not true. I have asked this question twice, one to the doctor and two on a public page. The government legalises prostitution, but it comes with its rules and restriction. Sex workers are tested periodically, pay taxes and are confined to Geylang district.

Again, rules are rules in Singapore. I did not know no dey. Ignorance is no excuse.

Most likely a Malay Chinese or even Malay itself. Singapore is expensive to live in, which is why salaries are high, especially for citizens. Foreign talents as the government calls them are those with superior work experience and qualifications to augment certain skills gap in the economy. However, Indians in India have used a loophole in the trade agreement the Singaporean government signed with India to fill almost every position, including those blue Singaporeans (those who have been there since independence call themselves that name) can fill.

Ask Singaporeans, the Chinese ones, what they think about Indians in Changi Business Park. The Indians from India used the native Indian population to mask themselves and fill positions. The Chinese Singaporeans got angry and complained bitterly on social media platforms. They threatened to vote out the PAP (has been in power since 1965). The government had to revise some of the employment laws making it very hard for average or slightly above-average folks to be employed. There is the S and E pass. Another one is the ONEVisa Pass, but strictly for the top 1% of workers/business people. There is also the Tech Visa, but with strict conditions.

The cost of living is like Switzerland—even her universities, although world-class, are very expensive for foreigners. Most scholarships are allocated to citizens from neighbouring countries rather than far away, except a few from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

The "gahmen" monitors everything you do. Protests or rallies cannot be held unless applied two weeks before the date and must be at Hong Lim Park. The last time a protest against government policies was held was in 2013, when citizens campaigned against the White Paper plan to increase the population from 5 million to 6.9 million. Singapore has one of the lowest birthrates globally, but not as low as South Korea.

A tradition in East Asia.

I cannot think of any presently. But Singapore enjoys a good relationship with South Africa. To be fair though, South Africans tend to stick to the host country's laws. The spate of drug smuggling by Nigerians pre-2007 really vexed Singaporean elites. They really hate that stuff, especially if the smuggler's country is not a major trading partner. Lee Kuan Yew even mentioned Nigeria(ns) when addressing a journalist about the death penalty.

As a Nigerian with a Nigerian passport in Singapore, you will be treated differently from a South African or African American. For instance, few Indians from the mainland tend to misbehave, but the government is mindful of how they are treated due to trade relations with India and the native Indian population.

Rules are rules. I say it in Singapore's defence that the rules are so simple as ABC. If you don't like the rules, don't break them.

Sincere apologies for almost taking over your thread, but anytime I see anything related to Singapore, it ignites an interest in me. I have followed events in the country for ten years now. I know the politicians by their names, pictures, the universities they attended and courses they studied. Lee Hsien Loong, son of Lee Kuan Yew studied at Cambridge like his father. But he did Computer Science, not Law. Both made a double first class. The incoming prime minister is Lawerence Wong who grew up with a single mother. Recently retired from politics is Tharman Shanmugaratnam who I really admire. If he had not retired would have been the president - which is an appointed position rather than elective. You also have Josephine Teo who made a gaffe about public housing and Vivian Balakrishnan, foreign minister, who is a medical doctor. In Singapore, public officials earn very high salaries and are held to high standards. Teachers are well paid, but only the best and brightest are recruited to be teachers. Singapore does not employ foreigners to teach in public schools. I wept when Lee Kuan Yew died. He is the number one politician I revere. The second is Abe Shinzo.

Let me stop here for now.

Majulah Singapura!
