evidential proof before broadcast
of miracles on television in Nigeria
without provision for guidelines for
establishing genuineness of such
miracles leaves room to much
speculation. Is this ban out of a
pure motive or meant to get at
private broadcasting media? In Acts
19:24-29, we
have the account of the incitement
by a certain man named Demetrius
of fellow Silversmiths whose trade
was endangered by the powerful
ministry of Apostle Paul. People
deserted the shrines of the goddess
Diana (whose shrines were
made by Demetrius and his
colleagues in trade)for the true God
whom Paul preached with signs,
miracles, and wonders. The
incitement against Paul was purely
for economic reasons as Demetrius
himself testified. Now,Is the NBC truly
concerned that "unproven
miracles" are broadcast on
television or are they acting some
hidden script?then,former Senate
President Wabara compared
broadcast of miracles with display
of pornography. What a horrific and
incongruous comparison! It is public
knowledge that human beings are
diverse in beliefs; so, we should not
expect uniformity of opinion on
matters. What is disturbing is for
NBC to assume the role of religious
arbiter and with bravado,tread the
path that devils fear to.
The NBC should know the following:
1. A miracle is an act or event that
does not follow the laws of nature
and is believed to be caused by
God (Oxford Adv. Learner's
dictionary 6th edition). It is not
subject to human comprehension. It
is beyond NBC(including some folks here).
2. A miracle is usually activated by
faith. As an acronym, FAITH could
be explained thus: F for Facts of
the bible; A for Acceptance of the
facts; I for Internalization of these
facts-not only for person A or B was
this written in the bible, but for me;
T for Trust-A firm certainty that
relief will come your way, and
damnation is past; H for Hope-Now
you hope for glory and not death.
The greatest of all miracles is
Salvation,which comes by faith in
Jesus Christ; that is to be born
again. The NBC does not understand
that it is attacking the very basis of
our Christian faith, maybe
unwittingly-and it is dangerous.
How can NBC (or some folks here) verify scientifically
the miracle of the new birth? I
remember, while teaching
in a secondary school in a Muslim
area in Northern Nigeria (during my IT period), I was
summoned to the principal's office
for preaching Jesus Christ in the
school. The principal asked me to
explain in his hearing and others
what it meant to be born again. I
joyfully gave the comparison
between a pig and a cat. If by
some miraculous operation, the
heart and nature of a cat is
transferred into a pig, though it
maintains its physical body, it will
display sanitary qualities of a cat
instead of its filthy lifestyle. Now,How
can the NBC explain scientifically
the spiritual transformation of a
sinner?
3. Miracles are a command by our
savior Jesus Christ to be part of the
ministry of the church (the body of
believers in Jesus). In the gospel
according to Mathew chapter 10,
after Jesus had appointed the
twelve apostles (who formed the
foundation of a great spiritual body
on earth called the "Church", He
gave them certain
commandments, among which
were-Verse 8a "Heal the sick,
cleanse the lepers, raise the dead,
cast out demons …" These are
active verbs! And should the work
of God be hidden? Should we not
declare "on the house tops" what
Jesus shows us in the secret? Ours is
not secret society. Jesus Christ
Himself led by example as we
have in Mathew chapter 9 verse 35
"Then Jesus went about all the
cities and villages, teaching in their
synagogues, preaching the gospel
of the kingdom, and healing every
sickness and every disease among
the people." The three-fold ministry
of teaching, preaching, and healing
is what Jesus Christ left with the
church. He said to us His church that
"As the Father has sent me so send
I you; If you believe, you can do
greater works than I do because I
go to the Father"-John 20:21,
14:12.
It should be noted that in the days
of Jesus the religious people of the
day-Pharisees and Sadducees- did
not believe Him. In fact, they
claimed he used demonic powers
(read Mathew 9:34; Mark3:22; Luke
11:14). They were jealous of Him.
The fame of Jesus Christ spread so
much through His miraculous works
so that sometimes (not always) He
would request people not to speak
of the miracles, not that it was bad,
but so that He could have time to
attend to some gospel matters in
other places also, "for this reason
had the Son of man come into the
world". He told the demoniac who
was delivered by Him to "go tell
what the Lord has done for you,
and how He has been gracious to
you". This man went out and began
to publicize this. If there were
broadcast media in Jesus' time, how
much do you think they would
broadcast those miracles?
When people say that Jesus was
against broadcasting His miracles,
they err. If Jesus Christ were
against it, how is it that we read of
these accounts in the gospels
today? Why has the record been
preserved? In fact, these gospels
(Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John) are
a chronicle of His miraculous deeds
on earth. John ended his gospel
account by saying that Jesus did so
many miracles that if they were all
written the whole world could not
contain the books. Then he made
this significant statement, and I
quote, "but these are written that
you may believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God, and that
believing you may have life in His
name." John 20:31. There are
many people who don't go to
church services but watch on
television. The NBC is hindering their
belief by this ban. Miracles are
meant to encourage/stir faith in Jesus.
What harm do they do to faith?
When John the Baptist had some
momentary doubts about Jesus
(Maybe because Jesus did not go to
deliver him from prison. Some
people in our country say that if
Miracle preachers were genuine,
they could have gone round
hospitals in Nigeria and healed
patients of their ailments. They lack
the knowledge and wisdom of God)
and sent messengers to Him to
confirm, Jesus sent this message,
"Go and tell John the things which
you hear and see: The blind see
and the lame walk; the lepers are
cleansed and the deaf hear; the
dead are raised up and the poor
have the gospel preached to them"
Mathew 11:5.
If someone testifies they have
been healed by prayer of faith (as
the bible says in James 5:15), who
is NBC to assert otherwise? Like I
said, the foundation of the Christian
life is FAITH. We r saved by faith;
we live by faith; we are healed by
faith; we receive the promise of
the Spirit by faith; we are justified
by faith; we even walk by faith
and not by sight; we please God by
faith. NBC's action is injurious to the
glory of Jesus and hinders the faith
of some. This is a serious claim
which I firmly stand by. The import
of the ban is that any preacher
who wants to reach multitudes of
people via the broadcast media will
be constrained in what he says
from the bible on the pulpit (and
we have the command to heal in
the bible) simply because NBC has
become the "Holy Spirit". This is a
dangerous situation and the
beginning of an insidious trend.

tomorrow, they may ban preaching
without "license".
Those so-called Christians and
Christian leaders who are playing
along and falling in with NBC should
be careful of betraying the cause of
Christ. In Philipians1:15-18, Paul
said: "Some preach Christ even
from envy and strife, and some
also from goodwill: The former
preach Christ from selfish ambition,
not sincerely, supposing to add
affliction to my chains; but the
latter out of love, knowing that I
am appointed for the defense of
the gospel. What then? Only that in
every way, whether in pretense or
in truth, Christ is preached; and in
this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice."
4. Paul had the attitude of rejoicing
that Christ was preached, whether
by false preachers or genuine. In
Mark 9:38-40 we have this account
"Now John answered Him, saying,
'Teacher, we saw someone who
does not follow us casting out
demons in Your name, and we
forbade him because he does not
follow us.' But Jesus said, 'Do not
forbid him, for no one who works a
miracle in My name can soon
afterward speak evil of me. For he
who is not against us is on our
side.'" (emphasis mine) Can NBC
learn from this? Jesus Christ would
never approve of their ban.
5. Gamaliel gave this restraining
counsel when the religious people
in the days of the early Apostles
sought to stifle the gospel of Jesus
Christ which was attracting
multitudes through signs and
wonders: "And now I say to you,
keep away from these men and let
them alone; for if this plan or this
work is of men, it will come to
nothing; but if it is of God, you
cannot overthrow it-lest you even
be found to fight against
God." (emphasis mine)-Acts of the
Apostles 4:38, 39. Can NBC fight God
and survive?
6. Testimony is part of our Christian
faith, and any attempt by anyone-
whether a churchgoer or not- to
stop or frustrate it will be
tantamount to persecution. In
Revelations 12:11 we have the
following words "And they
(Christians) overcame him (the
devil) by the blood of the Lamb
(Jesus Christ) and by the word of
their testimony, and they did not
love their lives to the death."
The NBC does not seem to fully
appreciate what they are stepping
into, and the earlier they retrace
their steps the better for all of us.
No one ever fought God and won.
All of us have the right to choose
what religious programs to watch.
The NBC should not deprive some
Christians who obtain spiritual
edification from watching telecast
of gospel miracles of such benefit,
more so when it is in agreement
with their faith. Those who claim
the miracles are fakes should
demonstrate the genuine for all to
