Ex-Mend leader implicates Nigeria


Henry Okah tells Al Jazeera presidential aide wanted him to tell armed group to withdraw claim for Abuja deadly blasts.
The former leader of Nigeria's armed group has said he was arrested because he refused to tell the group to retract a statement claiming responsibility for last week's deadly attacks in the capital, Abuja.

Henry Okah, currently being held in jail in South Africa, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that he received a phone call from a "close associate" of Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian president, telling him to urge the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) to withdraw its claim for the bombings, which killed at least 10 people and left 36 others injured on the 50th anniversay of Nigeria's independence.

"On Saturday morning, just a day after the attack, a very close associate of President Jonathan called me and explained to me that there had been a bombing in Nigeria and that President Jonathan wanted me to reach out to the group, Mend, and get them to retract the earlier statement they had issued claiming the attacks," Okah said.

"They wanted to blame the attacks on northerners who are trying to fight against him [Jonathan] to come back as president and if this was done, I was not going to have any problems with the South African government.

"I declined to do this and a few hours later I was arrested. It was based on their belief that I was going to do that that Jonathan issued a statement saying that Mend did not carry out the attack."

'Unpatriotic elements'

Jonathan, who hails from the country's south and has declared his intentions to stand in next year's presidential election, said investigations had revealed Mend, which is fighting for a greater share of Nigeria's oil wealth, knew nothing about the attacks.

He said the bombings had been carried out by a small group based outside Nigeria, sponsored by "unpatriotic elements within the country".

Nigeria will be holding elections in January almost a year after Jonathan assumed the presidency after the incumbent president failed to complete his term due to illness and eventual death.

Jonathan's predecessor, Umaru Yaradua, came from the northern state of Katsina and Nigeria has an unwritten agreement for the presidency to alternate between the mainly Muslim north and the largely Christian south.

Al Jazeera did not get any immediate reaction from the Nigerian government about Okah's claims.

Meanwhile, the authorities have released nine people they arrested in connection with the bomb blasts on Monday, including an aide for Ibrahim Babangida, the country's former military leader.

Raymond Dokpesi, the director of Babandida's campaign to become the ruling party presidential candidate, was questioned by the country's intelligence services over the blasts, an aide said on Tuesday.

Dokpesi, who also owns one of Nigeria's leading television and radio stations, was summoned to the State Security Services (SSS) on Monday, Kassim Afegbua, a spokesman for Babangida, told the AFP news agency.

"He was released yesterday and is to report back today at about 3'oclock (1400 GMT)," Afegbua said.
 
"They said it is to do with complicity in the bomb incident of  October 1."

Several media reports on Tuesday said text messages found on the mobile phone of one of the nine suspects arrested by the state  secret police led to the summoning of Dokpesi.

Conflicts in Jos are best known to indigenes and settlers.To be fair and frank,not all fulanis/muslims are part of this.We all know that.For anyone that know the fulani Life, they only attack if Cattles are involved.which is there main stay.not only  will a fulani herdsman man kill a berom for such intrest but will kill same muslim and hausa if that should happen.
I mean if sincerely we want to be forth right with our claims.People have suffered same all over the north regardless of the reasons.We may want to check this in the farmer/herdsman conflicts.the average berom man is not a normad or herdsman.go and check that out.they are farmers.beroms are mainly farmers.The so called crisis in the main towns,cities have brought the conflict to the normads amongst the berom.the fulanis, whom have never bother who runs Jos or its land.mostly as nomad exist temporary and move on (even Gov. Jang has confirmed there existance together).The berom Know they attacked them first knowing they had cattles for bounty and they knew the fulani normally roam in smalls groups all over the place.The hausa settlers (berom see as hijacking there land and economic rights) are in the towns and usually large numbers in such place only for some few places .making them(hausa) a harder target for the berom militia. the Attacked fulani man is one thing and cow is something else.They maybe lonely but the are ruthless.they also know how use violence, if the situation is not properly manged from its beginning.
My point is geninue reconcilation is not followed.when the fulani everyday spot the people/communities that attacked and killed there people still in custody of there cattles, they are tempted to attack and recover them.the berom will not give them back the cows and even if they the fulani leaders say stop to such fulanis as long as they see this some still want it back.Notice all the attacks and problems with the fulani and you will see the attack only to forcefully collect such stocks of cows in communities and where they have suffered significant violence.Berom in my entire time there, know they are not cattle breeders until after each violence do there stock increase. The berom thought they were going to get it easy after the attacks on lone fulanis and subsequent partial recouncilation.they never saw this coming.they now know it is far easier to attack the hausa and spare the fulanis.From there recouncilations you could see the berom emphasis on peace is between them and the fulanis not hausas(being there main enemies) as such.
My opinion-Why not ask people on both sides to point people out who engage in violence or advocating such,for the sake of all those killed .while All recoverable properties looted that can be identified be recovered.The Chris Ali interim(during the marshal law) only asked them to assist recover there property during the recent crisis and the fulani felt okay and were willing to ignore the death of there loved ones.We all know and is a fact the fulani value the Cow than there life.where the cow go they follow.resolve this and they will naturally move on.The beroms you are great people especially the women and younger folks they are known for there hard work and struggle.but you also must choose peace and justice first and foremost.I know and everyone knows this land belong to you but the covert struggle is not helping us all.come to the public and harmonise the populace to your advantage and see how you could grow to limitless greatness.Lagos,Abuja is working and they are doing well even when the indigenes are less that the settlers.You can rule and develop your people and make new friends.

Jos: Again, Cattle Rustlers Attack Riyom

Cattle rustlers from neighbouring communities in Kaduna state, on Sunday invaded Ganawuri area of Riyom local government area of Plateau state and made away with yet to be known cattle after unleashing terror on the people of the area.

Spokesperson of the military Special Task Force (STF), Lt. Col. Kingsley Umoh, who confirmed the attack said  “about 140 cows were recovered, one of the bandits sustained gunshot wounds while six others including a woman were arrested and they have been handed over to the State CID for investigations”.

In a press statement, Umoh urged the residents of Jos and its environs to be calm, assuring that the Task Force is on top of the situation. He urged them to report any suspicious persons or activities to the relevant authority.
He said “On Sunday 4 July, 2010 at about 12.30pm, bandits numbering about 200, some armed with automatic weapons and shot guns, while others with machetes, spears, bows and arrows invaded and attacked Ganawuri and its environs in Riyom local government area of Plateau state.

“The bandits are suspected to be cattle rustlers from neighbouring communities in Chiwar, Kaura local government area of Kaduna State. Several houses were torched, property looted and over a hundred cows stolen, one local herdsman was killed while two are still missing as a result of this mindless attack”.

The STF advised residents to remain calm and not take laws into their hands . He described the event as “purely criminal and an isolated incident that does not relate to or have bearing with any other." According to him, "the STF is on top of the situation but residents are to report suspicious persons or activities to the relevant authority”.

Eight Christians Killed in Nigerian Muslim Attacks

Nigeria's religious communities continue to strike each other with sporadic violence, Worthy News reports. Christians in two states of Nigeria are mourning the killings of at least eight Christian believers. "On the night of July 3, several Muslims attacked Kizachi village in Kaduna State and killed five Christians, including a primary school teacher and mother of six children. The Muslims also burned down five Christian homes," said International Christian Concern (ICC). According to ICC, police stopped protecting the village on July 2 as the government failed to pay their salaries. There was no immediate comment from Nigerian police. The second attack on July 4 happened near the violence-riddled city of Jos, when 200 Muslims armed with guns and machetes stormed Ganawuri community, allegedly killing three Christians.

Nigeria militants say clash with army in oil delta

LAGOS (Reuters) - Nigeria's main militant group said its fighters clashed with soldiers in the creeks of Delta state in the oil-producing Niger Delta on Thursday, the first report of such unrest in the OPEC member nation in months.

"There was a bloody confrontation at about 0030 hours, between our fighters and men of the military Joint Task Force after one of our patrols ran into two gunboats of the JTF at Ogulagha in Delta state," the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said in a statement emailed to media.

"A firefight ensued which lasted about 30 minutes," it said.

It was not immediately possible to get comment from the military or any independent confirmation of a firefight.

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday took a critical look at the way leading Christian clerics took him to the cleaners over his alleged blasphemous statement and fired back at them.

He had been roundly condemned for allegedly saying on the Voice of America (VOA) that even if Jesus Christ conducts election in the country, it would still be flawed, considering the attitude of politicians to polls.

But, reacting to the statement, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said it was unfortunate that a person of Obasanjo’s standing, who had benefitted immensely from the wonders of God, would blaspheme Jesus Christ.

CAN advised the former president to go for deliverance for his blasphemous outburst.

Obasanjo, however, said yesterday that rather than him, it was the Christian leaders, who needed deliverance.

“Do not mind them, they are the ones that need deliverance, not me, Obasanjo. Even, you journalists need deliverance,” he told reporters yesterday at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, on his way to Ghana.

Asked by reporters to react to the condemnations trailing his statement, the former president, whose flight to Ghana was eventually cancelled due to bad weather, added: “I am a recycled man, I cannot change again, they (Christian leaders) are the people that need to be delivered. I cannot repeat myself over what I said before, they are the ones that need all the repentance you can think of.”

On whether he was supporting Acting President Jonathan Goodluck for the 2011 presidential elections, which is contrary to the zoning formula of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Obasanjo, dressed in a blue stripped buba and sokoto attire, said: “Did you see me carrying Jonathan on my back? I do not understand you. If you mean supporting him, I do not know.”

Obvioulsy from the above quotes i made you can see that the israelites attacked and killed or claimed territories in the name of God in various times.some were obviously un-provoked but because God told them it was so.

People were hailed for great achievements like Alexander,ceaser and co.  for expanding there culture to vast lands in the name of power or conquest.The issue of the crusades, i prefer you read the history of such crusades and the various reasons they were staged.Also check the conquest of Spain and why alot of kingdoms fell to the Islamic invasions and vice versa.

A jail break at the Kaduna Central Prison was on Tuesday foiled by policemen and personnel of the Nigerian Prisons Service.



However, Prison and Police authorities gave different accounts of what led to the incident. There were also conflicting reports on the number of prisoners that died and those injured.



While the police accused a condemned cleric, Mr. Emeka Isiugo (alias Reverend King), of causing the attempted jail break, the NPS blamed it on congestion in the prison.



Also, eyewitnesses told our correspondent that 15 prisoners were feared killed, the Police and Prison authorities put the casualty at only two.



Our correspondent saw bodies of three of the killed inmates being taken away from the Prison in an ambulance marked NPS 108 KD to an unknown place for burial.



One of the witnesses added that 70 inmates and scores of prison officials were also injured while the administration block, particularly the records office, workshop and other offices within the prison yard were completely razed.



It was gathered that the attempted jail break was hatched and executed by the inmates in the awaiting trial cell who were protesting the alleged preferential treatment accorded King by the prison authorities.



King had been kept in the condemned cell of the Kaduna Prison since a death sentence was passed on him in January 2007 by a Lagos High Court.



The awaiting trial cell inmates were said to have launched an attack when the warders went to the condemned cell to get the prisoners to perform their routine cleaning of the prison yard on Tuesday morning.



Another source, however, claimed that the inmates went on rampage around 6am when they heard rumours that King, who had always championed their well-being had been secretly executed by the prison authorities.



A prison source who pleaded anonymity said that prior to the riot, the inmates had become apprehensive and agitated following the “disappearance of King from the condemned cell of the prison.”



He said, “They suspected that he (King) had been killed since he is a condemned criminal. His sudden disappearance was a source of concern to them. But unknown to them, King had been transferred to the Katsina Prisons. So, when the warders reported for duty this (Tuesday) morning, the inmates swooped on them, forcing themselves out.



“They burnt vital documents at the administrative block of the prisons and destroyed so many other important property. They overpowered the prisons armed guards and officials before a reinforcement came from other security agencies and stopped the riot.”



A warder also explained that the inmates attacked the prison officials while attempting to escape from the prison.



He said, “Few minutes to 6am, we heard noise from within the yard and to our surprise, we saw the inmates in numbers moving towards the workshop and bringing out dangerous weapons which they attacked us with. They came from the G-Line of the prisons which is used for housing robbery suspects.



“The armed guards among us opened fire but were overpowered; they quickly ran outside, while some of us were told by the inmates to change into convicts uniform which we did.



“They set the administrative building, record office and the workshop on fire. Some made for the walls and attempted to escape but were stopped by the guards who were firing from outside.”



The chaos threw the neighbouring Marafa Estate into pandemonium as a reinforcement of heavily armed riot policemen and soldiers attached to the Kaduna State anti-crime outfit (Operation Yaki) moved in to the prison to quell the uprising.



When our correspondent visited the scene of the incident, expended bullet shells and tear gas canisters littered Independence Road, the location of the prison.



Some relations of the inmates who later besieged the scene were barred from entering the prison by armed security men.



The NPS Comptroller-General, Mr. Olusola Ogundipe, who later visited the Prison, confirmed that trouble started when inmates in the “awaiting trial cell’ reacted to a rumour that King had been executed.



Ogundipe denied that the controversial cleric had been executed, saying he was only moved to a safe location.



He said, “At about 2am on Tuesday, awaiting inmates attempted to break out from the Kaduna Prison. Out of the 797 inmates, 539 are awaiting trial, and 139 are condemned.



“Two buildings were burnt down (the administrative block and the workshop); two inmates were killed; 29 injured; and two prison staff injured. No prisoner escaped.



“The crisis started from the awaiting trial cell, and Rev King is one of the condemned prisoners but I will not officially confirm Rev. King’s transfer, but I can tell you that he is in a safe place. He has appealed his case.



“The two that were killed were armed robbery suspects and, during the crisis the condemned prisoners’ cell was broken into but they refused to partake in the crisis.



“The situation has been brought under control and everywhere is calm now. All inmates have been taken back to their cells, and investigation continues.”



Earlier, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Tambari Mohammed, said King was the cause of the attempted jail break.



Mohammed said, “The prison officials said one Rev. King was the cause of this problem. He has served in Kaduna prison, he has served in Lagos prison and wherever he goes, he has become a problem.



“So they said about three days ago, they had cause to transfer him to Katsina Prison, because he was causing a lot of havoc in Kaduna prison like he did in all the prisons he had stayed; and three days after he left Kaduna prison trouble started.



“I am told that two inmates were killed, but I don’t know their names.”

I have started this thread as a plat form to get people talking in the north about issues that bothers the progress of the north as a whole.using the language i feel comfortable with.As all other threads before this one have carried various slangs or jargons and people have hardly said anything.i have not choose to use this to cause any grudge or quarrel.it is simple there are users out there that want to talk and they have not asked for my medium of communication.the thread is political and in hausa.for people saying it goes to culture.largely i think all the response is to show the clear hatred some people habor and there intolerance to Northern people or the language(hausa) widely used in the northern part.
