Jobs/Vacancies › Re: 10 Common Sense Interview Tips Too Many People Flub by hamtabfawaz(m): 3:16pm On Mar 10, 2021*. Modified: 3:10pm On Nov 27, 2023 |
CrazyMan: EVER BEEN GUILTY OF BREAKING ONE OF THESE SUGGESTIONS? STEP UP YOUR INTERVIEW SKILLS AND CHECK OUT THESE TIPS.
When we refer to something as being “common sense,” we usually mean that it is something we think everyone should know. Often, though, it turns out that what may seem like common sense to one person isn’t always so to someone else. For example: Veterinarians spend their days around animals, so they might consider it common knowledge that cats sleep about 18 hours per day; hence the reason your vet seems so amused when you bring Muffin in for a checkup, concerned about her inability to stay awake. Similarly, because human-resources professionals constantly screen and interview candidates, what may seem like a common-sense interview tip to them might not have crossed a job seeker’s mind. Following are “common-sense” interview tips straight from the experts’ mouths.
1. Be presentable: Wear a suit that fits, and don’t cut corners when it comes to ironing or dry-cleaning, says Monique Honaman, CEO of leadership development company ISHR Group. “I knew one guy who was in such a rush the day of his interview that he only ironed the front of his shirt. Later, during the course of his interview day, it was hot and he was encouraged to remove his jacket and get more comfortable and it was clear that he had cut corners and only ironed the front! He was very embarrassed,” Honaman says. Also, while you should always wear deodorant, try to avoid perfumes and colognes. You never know who will be allergic or just downright averse to your scent. “A hiring manager once told me a story of how he didn’t select an incredibly well-qualified candidate for a role because she wore the same perfume as his ex-wife,” says Danielle Beauparlant Moser, a career coach with Blended Learning Team. “He said she walked in the room and his only thought was how to get her out of his office as quickly as possible.”
2. Don’t be too early: While you should always arrive at your interview a few minutes early, try not get there more than 15 minutes before your scheduled interview time, advises Ben Yeargin, a manager at Spherion Staffing. “[Arriving early] will lead to anxiety on the candidate’s part because they have to sit and wait for an extended period of time, and it will lead to frustration on the hiring manager’s part because they will feel rushed with the project that they are trying to accomplish prior to the interview,” he says. If you find yourself getting to the building earlier than you thought, wait in your car or take a walk around the block until it’s closer to your interview time.
3. Know whom you’re meeting with: “Know the name of the interviewer so that you can ask for that person at the receptionist’s desk,” advises Cheryl Palmer, president of Call to Career, an executive coaching firm. “It’s embarrassing when the receptionist asks, ‘Who are you here to see?’ and you can’t remember. Have this information either in your head or write yourself a note that you refer to prior to arriving in the waiting area,” Palmer says.
4. Remember: You are being interviewed as soon as you walk in the door: “Most people would never think of the receptionist as being an interviewer, but it’s true,” Palmer says. “It’s fairly common that the receptionist will report back to the hiring manager how candidates behaved in the waiting area. Don’t be remembered as the one who ate all the candy out of the candy dish or spoke disrespectfully to the receptionist.”
5. Make proper eye contact: “One of the most obvious mistakes interviewees make is with eye contact, and it costs a lot of people a lot of jobs,” says Barry Maher, who owns a California-based career coaching firm. “Eye contact is simple,” he says. “Any given eye contact should last about five seconds at a time. And if there’s one interviewer, make eye contact with him or her about 40 to 60 percent of the time. More than 60 percent is intimidating. Less than 40 percent comes off as shifty and perhaps insincere, even dishonest.”
6. Eat before the interview: not during it Duh? Not according to Yeargin, who has experienced interview-snacking firsthand. “I was in an interview, no more than 10 minutes into it, and I got called out for two minutes to answer a question,” he says. “When I returned, the applicant was eating some sort of granola or other snack bar. Needless to say that individual did not get a job with my company.” No matter what the candy bar ads have to say, your hunger can wait.
7. How to eat: Make sure that what you do eat beforehand does not involve onion or garlic You want to be remembered for your professionalism and outstanding skills, not for what you ate for lunch. Advises Palmer, “Don’t eat anything that has a strong odor before the interview.”
8. Don’t look at your watch: Block at least two hours of time for the interview, says Cindy Loftus, co-owner of Loftus O’Meara Staffing. Loftus also advises keeping your schedule relatively clear on the day of the interview, to avoid feeling the need to rush. “Don’t create distractions to your interview,” she says.
9. Tell the interviewer you are interested: Don’t forget to tell the recruiter you want the job. “If you truly feel the position is a fit, let them know and tell them you would like to get to the next round of interviews, and be prepared to tell them why,” Loftus says.
10. Get business cards from your interviewers, and use them: “Ask for the business cards of all of the interviewers that you have met and make sure you take a second or two to read their card,” Loftus says. This will not only be helpful in remembering each person you met with, but will make it easier to send proper thank-you notes and follow up e-mails, which should always be done within 24 hours of leaving the interview.

Could an ignore user button have worked here sir?
I became who I am today working for a man who hated me As a matter of fact, I hit it big from his friend whom he claimed was not a paying client. I can still remember him asking those in the office whom he can send to the guys project because he’s not a paying client
I helped the guy work on the project right in front of Tinubu’s house in Bourdillon and within 2 weeks I started getting up to 1 million per week (almost 2 decades now) and connection to high fliers.
But since yahoo, it seems humility is no longer a virtue.
Despite how harsh my boss was, I served him very well. Thank you Sir, for sharing your experience! I Personally Appreciate this! Although While I was working, with my boss, At first I thought he was Nice! My colleagues that I met @ his place always complain about his attitude, but I used to preach to them to "calm down". After a month , he started showing me his disgusting attitude, he would literally complain at every little that I do, he made feel that i was useless, it got to a point I could not take it Anymore' So when he says something ridiculous I would stand & defend Myself! working with him was Like Hell! The Man is Really Complicated. |

Youngstown: I want to say a big thanks to everyone that took his/her time to review the plan. I feel humble and grateful for your criticism. I failed to include the facade the client (which is a family member) needed, and his features. Attached is the facade, which he repeatedly asked if I can archive and also requested the sitting room shouldn't be decked, thus to have a visual link btw both floors and a bq accessible from the back. I'm also an engr, a young one at that, and my boss who did the drawing (structural engr) who majorly prepares our floor plans. But the challenge we have working with architects is they always demand payment upfront even when the job hasn't been won. I do not blame them anyway as they have been taken advantage of, especially the young ones. We have been able to get an architect, after reading reviews here lol, that is willing to work with us to win the job without any upfront payment, which we are quite skeptical of, that's why we are also developing our designs in eventuality of any disappointment . I just pray it works out as planned as this would be out first contemporary project on the island. We too aren't too money conscious, lol with our clients especially at the preliminary stages of the process as our aim is to execute the project. I have to say the rivalry btw the architects and engrs is real! Once again thanks for the input. Will keep you guys updated! I Pray you win the Project! Bro Just keep us updated in here! |

diordaves: This is beautiful. Old time religion is a school of architecture. Only few can do it.
There is ancient and there is modern. Edo (Benin) children are the worse culprit in ignorantly knocking down beautiful traditional buildings to build monstrousity. So many Edo children have pulled down paradise only to build a parking lot.
Same is said for Ibadan (ancient Oyo Empire) beautiful buildings parked with history. It only takes a son/daughter with 'new money' to knock down centuries of history to put up a flat roof monster with glass, glass everywhere and Chinese metal internal doors to announce they've arrived. But no, they've not arrived. They've knocked down history with their parents spacial legacy and time stamp.
If you inherit such building as a child, before you do anything to the building, you should be asking yourself, if mum or dad's spirit is walking around, would they find their way 'home'? Would they recognise their building?
Foolish children. I will wake up from the grave to give you twelve lashes on your bottom. Dave what's wrong nah! You dey Para oo |

. You are right. We were in one guy's house then with my friend and there was a huge blast from a gas retailer shop close by, the POP ceiling came down. I am telling you. That day was one of the most horrible days of my life. My new hair was messed up and my clothes. But we thank God as there were no serious injuries. As much as I am concerned with costs, I wouldn't want to compromise quality. That's why bill my clients well, because I let them understand that "if you want a standard job, you must be ready to SpendI prefer to tell my clients the Truth, Not some Baba Junior that wants to collect any amount the client says! so as not to lose the client. |

n3xt: If you engage a surveyor, he comes to site with his ranging rod/surveying pole.
Why do builders waste money buying pegs and woods for setting out from site to site? Regardless of how cheap those items are, it’s a complete waste of money in my view.
I know you talked briefly about this few months ago and I took note of the idea.
Now I’m working on something cool and reusable for setting out buildings.
That the whole world (including professor emeritus of construction) is not doing it doesn’t mean we can’t alter the course and be the difference that makes a difference.

kingofchess: I Am Planning To Marry A Lady And This Happened. Pls Help
I am in my early 30 and I have been dating this lady for a year now and we are planning to settle down together and this happened.
There is this 11 months old baby in my compound who is very close to me and she just started walking. The very first time she saw my girl, she was soo scared and started crawling very fast towards her mum and crying. I quickly ran after her and carried her back to where my girl was sitting down, this time, the crying and running became very intense, I was shocked and I asked why the baby was so scared of her and she said she doesn't know.
Two days later, she came to my place and immediately this baby saw her she was scared and crying that was when I jokily asked her if she is a witch and she got angry and left my house. After she left, a lot of questions started running through my mind: like, is she a witch? Does she has a marine spirit? What did that little girl saw in her? In fact a lot of questions. She later called that same night and was like; baby, I am not possess ooh, I should not allow this little baby come between us ooh and that she loves me very much.
To cut the story short, less than two weeks later, the baby DIED. I was so scared if the baby actually saw something in her and she decided to shut the baby up ( I don't know, just an assumption).
Ever since then, I have been scared of my girl and I really don't know what to do. Please, I need your candid advice. Please guys, how can i make the moderators move this post to front page. From My own Experience! I love babies a lot! There is a particular baby in my Neighbourhood that used to run away from me for safety! I discovered that the baby actually does that because he is not used to me, everyone in their compound use to play with him freely, he runs for safety from anyone he is not used to. Your girlfriend's encounter with the baby is Pure Coincidence! Be careful of Negative thoughts. |
