Politics / Re: Middle Class In Nigeria- Is It Still In Existence? by HarryDuce(m): 10:58am On May 01, 2019
Many "rich" people in Nigeria are actually middle class if you look closely.
Outside that, you have poverty all-round as the norm.

The level of criminality in Rivers State is alarming. You dare not challenge youths for wrongdoing because almost all of them belong to one group of criminal gang (Cult) or another.

The free flow of small arms fire in the Niger Delta brought in by Russians and Chinese illegal oil bunkers have turned Rivers state to Rivers of blood as no single day passes without one heinous crime being committed.

The government in the state have tried many times to mop up these arms by granting amnesty and giving incentive to these groups of boys and girls, yet no solution in sight.

This is an indication of a failed family values and upbringing. So many youths in Rivers state are born out of wedlock and have little or no home training.

Lol. The government told this to you personally I believe?

If the government is ready, they know what to do.

Better in what? Is there any state in the federation doing better than Lagos?

What stops Kano from sourcing for resources elsewhere instead of collecting oil revenue? If it isn't laziness and greed, I wonder what the problem could be.

Good.
Those boys would soon get what they're looking for.

In any case, expatriates would start leaving onshore Rivers state for Lagos since those stupid boys don't want to have sense.
Lol. Are they going to relocate with the oil wells? As long as they stay within the city, they'll not be bothered. Since when do criminals think rationally anyway?

Kidnapping, cultism and theft are rife in Rivers State because the governor has refused to do anything about it. The president has also ignored the insecurity in Rivers State like he ignores every other thing. The Orashi region is now a hot bed for criminality. The riverine areas that were once violent are now peaceful havens in comparison. That's how serious it is.

If you've never been to rivers state before and you're planning to visit let me warn you of the areas to avoid. Avoid Emohua, Aluu, Ahoada west, Ahoada east, omoku, Akuku toru, eleme, ogoni, okrika and diobu. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Besides Okrika your list is pretty much spot on. I would have said you should exclude Akuku Toru, but I just remembered the water ways in the area are rife with pirates.

So because there is land, people should build houses every square inch? We're not doing population competition bro. People live in clusters; In urban centres. Take Egypt as a case study.

Northern Nigeria is vast. Maybe you've not realised how vast it really is. If they breed like they're endangered, it should be a valid reason to be bothered by the population. Undermining things like this helps no one.
Culture / Re: Ndoki Clan Reunion With Their Ijaw Root. by HarryDuce(m): 12:04am On Apr 26, 2019
Curlieweed:

Your post seems very honest and free from the sort of propaganda this sorts of topics usually attract. However, why do you think the Ndoki (being Ijaws) is far fetched?

I have been hearing this claim about Ndoki being Ijaw for a while now but anytime I talk to offline Ndokis I get conflicting responses. While some outrightly deny it pointing to some far off interaction with Ibanis, others say that they were actually Ijaws. Someone actually told me that a lot of older Ndokis were fluent in Ibani. This may be the case because I have met a lady that I initially thought was from Rivers State only to later find out she was actually Ndoki from Abia. She even had an Ijaw name.

It may also be that ethnic divisions was a lot more fluid in the past than it is at the present time. It could be that these groups we struggle to classify along these hard lines were made up of people with differing origins. It could be that Ndoki in the past simply identified as Ndoki and while speaking Igbo did not give a lot of importance to whether they were Igbo or not because that classification had very little political value as the larger Nigeria we see today didn't exist.

If they indeed have Ijaw (Ibani) ancestry, it wont be out of the ordinary to get the statements out of the horses' mouths. Such claims need corroboration.

I'm sure you've heard Ikwerre claiming Benin ancestry and you've seen the reaction from most Igbos that come across the topic. It is not out of the ordinary as it's to be expected.

You see my point...

HopeAtHand:
@HarryDuce, my inference on this ijaw situation is solely based on observation. I've been in an environment with two Ijaws from Odi in bayelsa, one ijaw from Engenni in ahoada-west and another from elem-tombia in Degema respectively in Rivers state. The bayelsa guy spoke with his brother from odi and out of curiosity I asked the guys from engenni and Kalabari if they understood and they said not at all.

Now the Ofoni speak Urhobo but are Ijaws; the people of gelegele(that seaport area in Edo state) speak Edo but are Ijaws; apoi in ondo speak Yoruba but are ijaws;Ndoki speak Igbo but are Ijaws; Obolo speak a different language from Ibani, which is different from Abua, from Nkoroo, from Engenni, from Epie, from Nembe, from Ogbia, from Atissa. Except Kalabari and Okrika which is highly mutually intelligible, the rest is just something else. How does a scholar sincerely group all this diverse ethnicities into one unit.

Lol. It seems you have your mind made up already. A few things to note:

•We have the western and eastern Apoi. The former in Ondo state and the later in Bayelsa state. The name of their clans are solely Ijoid. Them speaking Yoruba can be likened to the situation in Bonny and Opobo.

•Nobody claims Ofoni people are Ijaws.

•Izon is not understood by the average Rivers man. Only a few persons (mostly senior citizens) can grab some words and phrases but i still stand by my assertion that the languages are similar.

• Kalabari in Rivers state is like the central Ijoid dialect in the state in the Same vein, Izon is the central Ijoid dialect in Bayelsa and Delta. Okrika and Ibani people are not the only ones who understand the Kalabari language. From Nembe to Engenni. People understand it more than you think they do. I'm pretty sure other languages have dialectical differences as well; they can go from intelligible to almost a different language entirely. It's not unique to Ijaw.

•Speaking of Engenni. They consider themselves Ijaw just as much as the Degema people consider themselves a distinct tribe.

•Ogbia is an exception. Their language is entirely different.

•Since there's no written history of these areas, it's hard to substantiate claims. If Ndoki people have an Ijaw (Ibani) history, It's left the indigenes (especially senior citizens) to corroborate any claim.

Hmmm. Ndoki being an Ijaw clan seems a bit farfetched. I mean, how are they related? what are the links? When did Ndoki stop being an Ijaw clan that they are now reuniting?

@pazienza & HopeAtHand. Besides nairaland, I don't see anyone claiming another tribe as Ijaw. Linguistically, the Ijoid tribes are similar. Culturally, some are more similar than others. The affiliations did not come out of thin air. If a Nembe man speaks, a Kalabari, Okrika, Ibani, Biseni and Akinima person will understand what he says to an extent as the languages are similar (should i say dialect ). It is difficult for a Kalabari man to grasp anything an Izon man says, but fluent speakers will understand a few sentences. A Kalabari man can be understood by many Ijoid tribes especially in rivers state.

There is no "forced" association. What about the Obolo? (I presume this is what HopeAtHand referred to as claiming Ibibio). Most people call them "Ijaws" simply because of their language and history. Their language is Ijoid (not Ibibiod as most people on nairaland claim) with Ibibiod and Igboid influences. What they choose to identify as is entirely up to them.

I'm not gonna talk about Bonny and Opobo because it seems some people are not abreast with reality. Moaning about it changes nothing on ground.

Although population figures in Nigeria are manipulated, I think northern Nigeria has a larger population. States with the highest birth rates are still in northern Nigeria. If poverty and illiteracy weren't such a huge problem, we wouldn't be worried ordinarily.

Not a single South African soldier played a role in the fight against boko haram. Those were mercenaries and they have little to do with the current South African army.

Secondly the South African army drastically changed after apartheid. The whites who were well trained and highly respected largely left to become mercenaries.
Thanks for the correction, but, Africa's militaries are still nothing to write about. Despite the changes in the SA military, compared with the rest, they still perform albeit below expectations.

Pls remove South Africa from the list. Showing war plane does not mean you are a war goliath or a millitary goliath. South Africa has not experience any upheaval neither civil war nor terrorism and let's see may be they will still stand or chicken out.

I know what I'm saying I was born in millitary home, carrying gadgets around doesnt make you a guru but be able to apply it in no option situation and still float matters. South Africa are just bloody bread and butter millitary. They are just theoritical millitary brigade or boyscout.
This is your personal emotional rant. Emotions and facts should not mix. South African troops and military equipment have aided in the fight against boko haram; they were/have been efficient by the way.

Although not recently, the South African military has been involved in several African countries including Angola, Namibia and so forth. That counts as experience in my book.

Health / Re: The Need For Birth Control by HarryDuce(m): 2:16pm On Apr 18, 2019
Education is key. You cannot force birth control on people especially on a continent like Africa. People are sentimental; very religious and what not. Any attempt by any African government to encourage birth control on an uneducated populace will not be looked upon favourably considering the corruption that surrounds them.

People need to be educated on things like family planning first, other aspects will fall in place.
