theoctopus: Sometimes I dont understand how you people just post things with so much ignorance of government procedure. Do you think GEJ can just order central bank to bring 100 billion just like that? Every expenditure for the year in budgeted. If there is a new project, the FG will have to send a supplementary budget to the NASS for approval. Why cant you guys just understand this simple thing for once. And you cannot be talking about sending a supplementary budget in November can you? We are talking of 2014 budget now, not 2013. I think part of the problem we have in this country is mass ignorance of our government works and it seem deceitful unions and parties always take advantage of that to hoodwink the gullible publicThe strike started in July for God sake. Why did the government not process supplementary budget since then. Can't you see for yourself that the government has no money to offer. Did you not hear the Speaker of the House say they are ready to make any legislation that will aid ending the strike? The truth is that they have always refused to budget it. One of the reasons they gave ASUU in 2011 and 2012 was that it was omitted from the budget. I doubt if they will include it in 2014 budget and that is why ASUU wants a commitment by government. Pensioners has been crying for pension arrears yearly, they always promise to include it in the budget. I can bet you that the pensioners arrears is not been budgeted for. Only things they want or feel important to them goes through. We will soon be wasting billions on elections and census very soon. |

oluafolabi: Bro, If you followed the news in the last three weeks, you will know that GEJ didn't promise ASUU 200 Billion this year. The news has been saying nonsense long ago. Only 30billion has been released. The 100billiob Suswan claimed to have raised is a scam. Award letters were given to schools but no school have received a dime after 2months. |
Guess they have seen that it does not add to the political score towards 2015. Some technocrats must have advised the president to dissociate himself from the action. Did the committee of vice chancellors also give the orders to the IG. If WIKE (we intend killing education) as posted in another thread was only passing down orders from the committee. Why was he shouting in that press conference and why did he loose his comportment? I will not be surprised if ASUU adds Wike's public apology as a condition for calling of the strike. Rivers people should be weary by now of who they want to elect as governor. For God sake I learnt he is a barrister, he lacks deco rum. No other word to describe his actions other than those of Unical ASUU chair who said they will wait to hear from the president and not respond to touts like wike. |
Na WA ohh. Nigerians can coin names easily. |
iHustle: I don't think our academicians are afraid of getting sacked. Private universities are already recruiting some of them, and other African countries want to poach them.Such as Ghana were Nigerians pay 2million naira per session. Others include Kenya, Botswana and SA. The brain drain will continue. Let government keep training people only to export them out. |
spenca: there is no association that all members agree its not just possible but to clarify your ignorance most lecturers criticizing ASUU are members of SANUUPlease don't misinform your self and others. No Academic staff is a member of SSANU. ASUU for Academics NAAT for technologists SSANU for level 6 and above non technical and non academic staff and NASU for level 1-5 non technical and non academic staff. So all academics belong to ASUU. Including a graduate assistant if employed by the university. |
Gabbysky: Oga this your grammar is too long, you de resume or not? leave Wike's matter aloneWhy did the no work no pay work? Do you think the no work get sacked will work? The only reason it will not work is because government has refused to train people or inject money to research which will make PhD students graduate quickly and many other students interested in running a PhD. If the country has 400,000 PhD holders of working class out of her 160million population, that number alone will be enough to make no work get sacked work at least to an extent. It is a shame that our universities boast of less than 35 000 PhD holders and I doubt if you will get another 100 PhD holders who are without jobs. This is because it takes a minimum of 2-3 million plus several mental work to run a PhD in Nigeria. The rich men children who can afford it don't want mental stress, while those who cannot afford the pay find it challenging to cope. Thus many people abandon the program. Those who get assistant lecturing job end up using their salaries to run the program. So ask your self this question, will it work? The reason Gov Fashola bulged was not because he was that powerful nor week. It is because consultants are very few around. About 60% of graduate medical students from Unilag move out of the country yearly. At the moment, house officers are yet to be paid 7-8months house job allowance due to government policy. Do you think those guys won't use the money when paid to seek greener pasture out of this country. RESIDENTS went on strike and called off about 2 months ago yet these young lads are yet to be paid. If by Jan 1 they decide to begin another strike Nigerians will be saying they should consider the sick. Can a hungry man do the right thing? Think well and stop letting PDP things affect you. |
Kei144: Imagine the President of Nigeria granting ASUU 13 hours of negotiation and then making reasonable offer to them. If ASUU were wise, they would have quickly convened their NEC before the end of that week and issued statement like: "To show our respect to the President, we hereby call off this strike, believing that our President is an honorable man." Respect is reciprocal. Instead what ASUU has done is to show the world that the President is not greater than them and so deserves no honor or respect. They delay for more than two weeks and then demand for another 13 hours with the President. I used to think that it is only Igbos that do not know how to respect "kings", but now it dawns on me that even a Bini man with centuries of monarchial culture is not different from Igbos; even Yorubas and Hausa-Fulanis. I now strongly believe that a set of wrong people are occupying our ivory towers. The FG should use this opportunity to do something about it.You write like a wise man, but your position is very wrong because it seems you lack knowledge of what's going on. The same president was part of the agreement as a vice.president and was on ground as president in 2012 when a memorandum of understanding was signed. If this two process failed, and the senate president can say those people who negotiated for government do not know their left from right, don't you think that it is wise for ASUU to get a commitment letter from Mr president or from the Attorney General of the federation (the most senior learned colleague and gov't legal officer) who knows his left from his right to sign the document rather than allow a perm sec to do so again. To prove that government is not sincere, when the vice president negotiated with ASUU, we all recalled that he was told to make it black and white, that is to say ASUU was ready to shift ground long ago, but needed evidence that government would not disappoint again. In addition to this, universities have received award letters from government since September for infrastructure from the 100billion Suswan claimed to have raised. At this moment, no school has received a kobo after 3months. Is that not the same money ASUU is telling government to disburse and sign a binding letter? It just shows that there was no money anywhere to pump to this schools. And I also suspect that delay in the budget might not be due to disagreement on fuel benchmark alone but a ploy to allow ASUU call of and then the present 7% to education in the budget. lets put all sentiments such as religion, ethnics and zones apart, and face the real deal. ASUU IS MADE UP OF PEOPLE ALONG THIS DIFFERENT LINE OF RELIGION, ZONE AND TRIBE, YET THEY ARE UNITED AND PURPOSEFUL. WHAT MAKES THEM SO STRONG IS A SIMPLE FACT THAT THEY ARE ALL INTELLECTUALS AND THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS IT IS DIFFICULT TO BRUSH THEM ASIDE. |
robo247: Pele College of Education student. You have only either seen only one Prof in your life or none. Because the only Prof would be the Provost who will never come to you class to teach you. Stop posing as a university student. May be you are even a secondary school drop out from the E who turned trader. You might need Wike's help with the almajiris school programme and that for those who dropout to go into trading. LOL |
deletrue: If you want to know how many professors, doctors etc that are available, awaiting for any slightest employment opportunity, ask those who attended Dangoti group of companies during the drivers interview.A sound PhD holder can not be jobless with all our universities lacking in manpower. Those who went to Dangote knows what they are looking for. You only need to fly out of this country for once and see how things are been organized, including the educational system. Its a shame that people like you will go and collect rice and 1K to vote next year. We can't continue in a system full of looting. FIRS tax on Non oil revenue is about 2trillion, Customs returns is about 1trillion, not to talk about Oil which that they say is the main source of revenue. 2014 budget is estimated at 4.7 trillion. Will you say that Nigeria only raise 1.7trillion from oil per annum if you include revenue from customs and FIRS. Our leaders are not sincere and they will remain like that unless we start making them accountable. How long will it take to construct Lokoja-Abuja road? Since OBJ Regime. They pump billions to those roads yearly and we don't see it. Thank God the one they always loot by deceiving us with PHCN is about over. What sane country will have fuel and don't have a functional refinery. If this ASUU strike will lead to a revolution please bring it on. In 1year fixed charge with PHCN has moved from 250 naira to 750naira. Whether you have light or not you must pay. 4K was loaded in my house since August ending I still have 22units left, yet I spend about 8k montly on generator for few hours per day. Don't even mention water. Every home now has a borehole or a well. You are either drinking pure water or seaway. Our hospitals are also bad. This all buoys down to why our leaders have their children in foreign schools and go outside for medical care. The hands here are capable of offering such services but corruption will not agree. We have thousands of academics out of this country and doing very well. Not to talk of Doctors,Nurses etc, We can replicate the same here. When wil we ever be wise. The sum of money Nigerians pay in Ghana for fees is about the same amount we budget for the entire universities in the country, not to talk about UK and US. If we make our system work well like it use to be before, we can attract back foreigners to our schools both as students and lecturers' and with that alone we will raise more. Money for the nation. It is a pity that even the minister does not recognize education as a business that can raise good money for the country. If they know, then the assumption of deliberately killing government schools to grow their private universities is true |
lincy: I wonder Y a Boss will ask a subordinate to go back to work and the boss is being quationed, ASUU is bitting more than can chew. The federal govt. Should audit the whole fED university, the should give account of the money that has be allocated to Fed uni. Before now .Who is this disgrace. Don't you know that whatever you post is accessible worldwide. Don't dare hide under typographical error, because the level of ignorance you possess in your write up shows that you are deficient both in knowledge and in ability to compose and write a good letter. Those you seem to be accusing are far away from you. |
Sincere 9gerian: This is the ACTION FILM that I've been waiting for. When all pleading and negotiations fail, the only option left would be physical FIGHT, aka WAR. Lets do it man to man and get bruised so that both sides can learn the RIGHT lessons going forward. No one has monopoly of violence or force.ARE YOU A NIGERIAN? DO YOU READ AT ALL? CAN JONATHAN JUST SIGN WHAT HE HAS PROMISED? |
Zutchy: ASUU should just apply to INEC for registration as a new political party. Enough is enough. All the fedral govt came up with is a letter signed by the perm Sec Min of Education for a 13hours plus meeting. ASUU seeking commitment to the agreement by Mr President or the attorney general is right. We all heard the Senate President say publicly that, those involved in the 2009 agreement do not know their left from their right. In my own opinion, this statement is what has led ASUU to seek governments commitment by a high ranking govenrment officer. In all, the table has been set to call of the strike already. Wike should stop saying bullshit. I guess they are all annoyed with the G5 defection from PDP to APC. |
chymystique: Take the 3million... And kip searching for anoda job!.. Goodluck! Thanks for this comment. The guy is just raising hopes and fill like making people to hope they have the kind of opportunity he/she has. |
I'm forever grateful. Poster take your time, we are not all foolish. |
Strike is over already. Congress of various universities to be briefed tomorrow. All students should prepare for academic work. |
The two lecturers are betrayals'. It was learnt that Dr. Daramola called ASUU NEC stupid for refusing to hold NEC meeting because of the death of Prof. Iyayi. He has no regard for life and I think he holds no principle when it comes to unionism. It was also learnt that he was booed out of the congress, when he refused to apologize to Congress members. It's a big propaganda that ASUU wants to end the strike in January. We all know that the Labor Minister said that ASUU will talk to its members and get back to government. The meeting has been scheduled for today. ASUU does not want a situation in which they will be told the permanent sec, who signed the current letter ob implementation modality does not know his right from his left. |
This is a good development. After 3-5 years in the best universities in the world, do you think this chaps will return or stay in our Universities if they remain like this? To retain them at home, funding of universities being canvased by ASUU needs to be effected appropriately and not with lip service. The pay should also be such that it will encourage them to stay. WE SHOULD REMEMBER THAT WE ARE SENDING OUR BEST BRAINS OUT. AND OUTSIDE THERE, THE DEVELOPED WORLD WILL DO AND OFFER ANYTHING TO THEM SO THAT THEY CAN STAY IN THEIR COUNTRY. I HOPE WE GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME. |
the planmaker: embezzlement thingsUniversities are not what you think of when it comes to accountability. First the money will be released in batches to the school and the researchers access it when needed. The university usually has 5-10% of such grants as its own portion. While the researchers are also compensated. Any thing outside the lay down procedures such as embezzlement will lead to the blacklisting of the university. Such that no international body conducts research with it again. I hope you can see the different. Congratulations to unijos. 6-9 universities are to benefit from this. UNILAG was also shortlisted. We await other schools to come up with their own announcement soon. Those who criticize ASUU on funding should multiply 8million dollars by 6-9 universities, convert it to naira and compare it to what universities are requesting government to do. That's 7-11 billion naira for 6 -9 universities. With this, patents will come in. More companies will be attracted to Nigeria and most trado-medical practitioners will find a means of making their products refined and marketable all over the world. Please like this if you think ASUU means development for our schools and Nigeria at large. |
Nothing will happen to the lady if she knows what to do. She should liase with the schools disciplinary committee. They will arrange the money and the venue. While security personnel's will be available in the hotel. I bet you that once this lecturer is caught, he will be expelled and in some instances his certificate can be revoked by the university making him unemployable in any university again. Don't fall victim always act responsible and wise. Lets get rid of the bad ones out of our universities. |
Hmmmmm how can a PhD holder be an assistant lecturer? Kogi state University students who knows this lecturer should identify him to Nigerians on this forum. Tell us about his lectures, antecedents and prospects. |
Students that lack decorum say whatever they like. Is it not better due process is followed than to mute another strike action next year. |
Exams starts 2nd Dec/9th Dec |
Nuzo':Shame on our leaders. Are they just knowing the financiers of terrorism after 4 years, why all this exposition on G7 governors and their supporters. From aircraft oppression, to building demolition, to suspension etc. I think the presidency and the ruling party should concentrate on governance and stop witch hunting. Re-election has never been good in Nigeria. I support a six year single term with good legal and accounting system. |
Congrats to the Ex-Boy |
How small pikin take know Ojuju Calabar? |
karl max: Lagosians are aware of the fraud called lagos state government and all their media propoganda!!!come 2015 we would boot dem out of power!! They can continue their propoganda on the internet and the pages of newspaper but the electorates are wiser nowHope you are not insinuating that the electorate will vote PDP in Lagos. There's a great difference between a pilferer and an armed robber even though both are thieves. |
We don't have 120 chapters of ASUU. Stop posting speculations. |
December last year, Wada's convoy was involved in accident that killed his ADC and Wada himself broke his leg. Now Wada's convoy again has killed an erudite scholar. He should better change his escorts or give them a firm warning orders or he himself will die soonest. I can remember how those escorts often drink at the slightest opportunity when at occasions. |
Its sad. AIT reported that it was a head on collision with the convoy of Kogi state governor. Those escort vehicles drivers are usually very bad and rough drivers. A year or two ago, the governor of kogi himself was involved in an accident. |
University of Lagos ASUU congress for today also unanimously suspended the strike. NEC meeting to hold on Wednesday. |
