Court has denied the sahara reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore bail application, VAM Online News has gathered.

Justice Ojukwu said Sowore's bail can only be reduced to N50 million while Bakare's should be reduced to N20 million.


The judge said she found it difficult to believe a man of Sowore's pedigree does not have anyone to deposit N50 million.

No fewer than 500 senior secondary school three Muslim students on Sunday sat for the 2019 Career Mentorship Program (CMP) scholarship examination organized by the Islamic group, Standard Bearers Islamic Organization (SB) Osun State branch.

Our correspondent gathered that the Muslim students who are in SS3 were tested in Mathematics and English Language across 5 centres in Osun and Ondo States. 


The centres where the scholarship examination took places include; Oduduwa College, Ile Ife;  Muslim Unity Secondary Academy, Akure; Islamic Model College, Iwo; Laro Middle School,  Osogbo; and Ede Muslim High School, Ede. 


Mr. Fatai Hassan, the Director of the CMP, said the placement test was smooth and hitch-free in all the 5 centres.


He disclosed that any student who had the highest score in the scholarship examination will be given free WAEC and JAMB fees.


He disclosed further that students who had 50% and above will also be given awards.


Hassan said the aim of the program is to develop the minds of the Muslim students by creating a healthy rivalry among the students.


Similarly, the Chief examiner of CMP, Mr. Abdullahi Muslim, said the examination was a great success in all the five centres.


He said the questions that were set are set according to WAEC standard and they are obviously not beyond the capacity of the Senior Secondary School three which is a criteria to sit for the examination.


Muslim added that he was impressed with the conduct of the examination which showed that the students were ready for the test. 


A candidate, Durojare Ibrahim, told our correspondent after his first paper that the examination was well organized, adding that the questions were tough.

The Bishop of Ndokwa Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican communion), Right Reverend David Obiosa, has said the secret to winning any Christian battle is relying on God, putting faith in Him and facing the battle squarely under His instructions.

The Bishop made this known at the September edition of the monthly Power Night of the Abuja Anglican Diocese, held at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Life Camp, Abuja, VAM gathered.

Speaking on the theme, “The Battle is the Lord’s,” Obiosa pointed out that the Christian life in itself is an introduction to battle, because even at baptism, one is said to be enlisted into the army of Christ.

He stressed that the Christian warfare is not a fight of the flesh, but one that is fought spiritually and can only be won with spiritual weapons.

Narrating the story in the Bible about the shepherd boy, David and Goliath, the giant Philistine, the bishop observed that life is filled with challenging situations such as that which David and the Israelites were faced with.

He said Christians are facing all kinds of warfare today, including persecution for their faith. The cleric opined that just like David, believers must realise that the warfare is not a physical battle and it is only God who can grant them victory.

THE University of Ilorin on Saturday beat Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic of Zaria 1-0 to win the third edition of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board-sponsored tertiary institutions football competition, VAM gathered.

In the final match of the 16-team competition held at the University of Ilorin pitch, the game’s only goal was scored in the third minute.

The institution thus won the trophy and one million Naira star prize, with the goal bringing the best out of the two schools.

The two institutions clashed in the final of the competition last year, with the Zaria-based institution winning the trophy.

Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic went home with N750,000 for coming second in the competition.

A report received from a town in Ondo state, indicates that a heavy Tragedy has struck in Okeagbe Akoko community in Akoko North West local government area of Ondo state yesterday, October 19th after a recognized 86-year-old man, Umoru Samuel, was pushed to his death while trying to separate his son and a neighbour who were fighting.


Eyewitnesses at the scene, Pa Samuel heard his son and the neighbor, Leye Rufus, fighting and made his way outside to seperate them. 


Sadly, as he tried to stop the fight, Leye allegedly pushed him and he fell flat on his face.


He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was certified dead on arrival.

The National Association of Nigerian Students wish to profoundly thank the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi for abstaining from the convocation lecture he was billed to address yesterday at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State.


VAM has learnt that NANS had earlier warned and advised the Governor to stay away from all campus related activities across tertiary institutions in Nigeria due to the killings of promising undergraduates at Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State by CTU officers attached to the governor's wife, Mrs Bisi Fayemi while on political tour of local governments in Ekiti state.


While reiterating Nigerian students resolve at ending all forms of impunity by the political class against helpless citizens, we wish to once again encourage the Ekiti state first family to in the interest of justice handover the Counter Terrorism Unit officers who mindlessly killed Joseph Okonofua and Kehinde Dada (among several others critically injured) on September 9, 2019 during Erelu Bisi Fayemi's visit to Oye-Ekiti for immediate prosecution.

Those trigger happy officers must face the law no matter how long they are shielded.



Governor Kayode Fayemi and his wife, Bisi Fayemi remain banned on our campuses so long they refuse to allow justice run its cause on the dastardly FUOYE killings.


 

They should maintain a distance of not less than 50 kilometers from our campuses.



We assert that no live is superior to another and that there is no alternative to resolving the issues around the unresolved murder until all demands made by NANS are met. 



The report is already in the public domain and all lawful means of pressing for justice will be explored by NANS in bringing to book the perpetrators, irrespective of their social status.

Former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson allegedly fixed a football match with a corrupt agent who gave him a £30,000 gold Rolex, a court heard today.


Football agent, Giuseppe ‘Pino’ Pagliara, 64, made the claims to an undercover reporter posing as a businesswoman looking to invest in football players, jurors were told.


Pagliara is on trial for bribery at Southwark Crown Court alongside assistant head coach of Barnsley Football Club Tommy Wright and fellow football agent Dax Price. All three deny the charges.


The trio were charged following allegations of corruption published by the Daily Telegraph in 2016, one of which led to Sam Allardyce resigning as England manager.


He said the legendary manager fixed a champions league game against Italian giants Juventus and alleged Ferguson pocketed money from transfer deals, Southwark Crown Court heard.


Pagliara and fellow agent Dax Price allegedly tried to “impress” Claire Newell by arranging meetings with prominent footballing figures such as Steve McLaren, Harry Redknapp, and manager Neil Warnock, prosecuter Brian O’Neill QC told Southwark Crown Court.

O'Neil said Pagliara claimed that “99 percent of the people in football if they weren’t in football, would be selling second-hand cars.”


Pagliara was said to be“furious” with Redknapp for suggesting the reporter should buy a football club instead of using a legal loophole to get around a ban on third-party ownership of players in England during a meeting in July 2016, the court heard.


Describing another meeting, Mr O’Neill said: “Towards the end of the meeting Pagliara launched into what could only be described as a diatribe of Sir Alex Ferguson, accusing him of having conspired with Pagliara to fix the result of a football match between Juventus, a club which Pagliara was associated with, and Manchester United in the Champions League for which Pagliara had thanked him with a gold 30 grand Rolex watch.


“Pagliara went on to accuse Sir Alex Ferguson of having taken money as part of transfer deals. He claimed that he had paid Ferguson before.”

He added: “To the outside world, the plan being espoused by Mr. Pagliara, it would look as though the player in question was owned by the football club in Belgium when actually the player was owned by a third party.


“And that, said Pagliara, was the plan that he wanted to end upbringing to England because that’s where the money is.

“He went to speak about placing players in Italian clubs where he had various connections before moving them to England.


“‘You have to have an offshore account somewhere and that’s where we do it. For example Antonio Conte [then head coach at Chelsea[ has winked at us and said, “yeah, I want that player, is there a little coffee for me Pino?”’


“A little coffee, she said. ‘Yeah, that’s what he’ll say: yeah of course there is and now I’m negotiating a coffee as well and we are not talking about a double espresso.’


“He went on to say he would disguise it as a consultancy agreement by another trusted individual.


“‘Claire, I’ve opened so many Swiss bank accounts for managers that you would not believe’.”


Tommy Wright, 53, then assistant head coach of Championship club Barnsley, accepted a cash bribe to get players to sign up with the agents, the court was told.


Undercover reporter Claire Newell and her team set up a fake company and told Pagliara and Price that she wanted to invest in football players, jurors heard.


The court was told that they arranged for a £5,000 bribe to be handed in an envelope to Scots-born Wright, who played top-flight football for Leeds, Leicester City, Oldham, and Middlesbrough.


Wright, of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, denies two counts of accepting a bribe, while Pagliara, 64, of Bury, Greater Manchester, and Price, 48, of Sittingbourne, Kent, deny two counts of paying and facilitating a bribe.


The prosecutor said of Mr Price: “He went on to say this: ‘There are certain people like Harry Redknapp; he needs looking after. There are certain people like Neil Warnock.’


“It’s no part of this prosecution to malign those individuals about whom they spoke.

.Call on President Buhari, DSS, NSA to wade into the matter


The delegates of the Ezonebi training centre, on Wednesday protested over the non-payment of their coordinator, Enetimi Evah Ezonebi, VAM Online News Reports.


The delegates blocked the southwest road in the early hours of today, demanding the Presidential Amnesty Office to make payments to their coordinator for jobs completed.


They also appealed to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, National Security Adviser (NSA) and the DSS to call Professor Charles Dokubo to make payments to their coordinator for jobs completed in June 10, 2019.



The delegates all came out to protest today to show their disapproval of the non-payment of their coordinator for the training programme they all attended at Lagos for a duration of six months, they further mentioned that their coordinator, Enetimi Evah was a blessing and the centre changed their lives for the better.

The coordinator ensured they were equipped with the right skills and all they needed to transform their mentality.


At the graduation ceremony held in Lagos in June 2019, they were awarded cash gift and they are yet to receive the gift as a result of the non-payment. They are also unable to receive their TIN number, which is outstanding. They are protesting in order to collect what is due to them.


They further mentioned that, if payment are not made quickly, they will go back to the creek and create unrest in the Niger Delta. They want the DSS to assist in making the payment process effective to avoid them going back to the creek. They also vowed that if they go back to the creek, Professor Charles Dokubo should be arrested as he is to be blamed for this, not them.


One of the delegates Melakpo marvelous (leather work) said “The Amnesty Office used our madam and gave her technical knockout, because Professor Charles Dokubo came for flag up at Ezonebi training centre , he also attended or mid training beach activity at Landmark and is aware of the progress we have made, which makes the way she is being treated bad.


They used Ezonebi training centre and projected accomplishments to Nigeria in an elaborate graduation ceremony held at the Eko hotel Lagos in June, 2019.


To us, we see this act as a technical knockout, as she has tried to get her outstanding payment from the office since June, but is yet to receive it and in addition she has been restricted from getting into the office to process her payment. This is merely an act of wickedness from the office to a dedicated contractor.”


Another delegate, Madam Hilter, who was the best delegate in fashion works said “ When she called our coordinator (Enetimi Evah) to redeem her cash gift, she was in tears and asked that I exercised patience as the office had not made payment to her.”


According to some of the delegates who were trained in Information Technology, they are yet to be empowered, they are very angry about it. They have protested earlier at Silverbird television station Lagos as regards the instant empowerment allegedly promised by Dokubo.


They further mentioned that the training centre was more of a rehabilitation facility for them, they were so lucky to have been posted there, as no other training centre was so interested in their growth and overall success.


The coordinator was even awarded an excellence award by the Presidential Amnesty Office at their graduation in June,2019. She is a mother to all.


“We are requesting the amnesty office to make payments to her within the next two weeks, or we would be forced to go back to the creek to create unrest in the Niger Delta.


This woman has trained more than 300 delegates in the Niger Delta, to mobilize ourselves and fund any protest is nothing to us, her JOY is our JOY, WE WILL NOT ALLOW HER TO CRY again, if she sheds tears again in respect to the payments, we will fight to the end.

The management of the Ondo Varsity popularly known as Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, Ondo state announced the postponement of the Students' Union election scheduled to hold today indefinitely due to technical reason, VAM Reports.


VAM gathered, that the decision to postpone the AAUASU electionc which was scheduled for today, 16th October, was due to complains of Nigerian students that the election process is biased and the process of e-voting system has been hacked.

On Tuesday, 11th October, Corp members under Community development service of NYSC secretariat Kaltungo Local Government of Gombe state met with market Union on integration and development of education especially to street hawking children who don't go to school, VAM News reports.


The union, represented by its executives and some members appreciate the Corps members efforts and promise their cooperation as usual. 



The Market Union, through the Leader, Malam Baba also promise to take into action a policy that will enable the union to get as much children of the poor as they can to schools with school uniforms and some books, just as requested by the Corps members.

We were also at the border to Sambisa forest in Borno state, where armoury of Nigerian Army was inspected. We also had useful discussion with the gallant officers on how best to end the activities of Boko-Haram insurgents in the entire North East, he said. 


Second day of the visitation began at the hospital (MRS) of the Theatre Command. We afterwards visited the Nigerian Army cemetery where respect was paid to the nation's heroes that had paid the supreme price.

Former Southwest Coordinator, National Association of Nigerian Students, Sunday Ashefon, has identified the ‘name and shame method’ as a viable weapon to expose lecturers sexually assaulting students, VAM Online News Reports.

Ashefon said ‘NANS Sexual Harassment Register’, an online register, had been opened for students who had been assaulted sexually either for marks or cash by both male and female lecturers.

The NANS presidential aspirant and student of Ekiti State University, who made the link, https:///2OBwzFx, available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Saturday, described “Name and Shame as a viable weapon to expose any lecturer whose name was repeatedly mentioned by students of the same university”.

The former NANS Southwest coordinator, who is leading the campaign, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Pelumi Fasogbon, has vowed to publish a graphical result of the poll when he eventually becomes the NANS president.

He admonished “all sexually victimized students to sign up the petition, which shall be presented to Federation of Women Lawyers, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, Nigerian Universities Commission, Academic Staff of Nigerian universities and governing councils of tertiary institutions affected and if possible, prosecute same depending on the availability of weighty documentary evidence.

“As NANS President, my leadership shall restore academic discipline back to campuses and never again shall students be threatened by academic or non-academic staff for success.

“The public register is available online and we shall name-shame anyone whose name appears more than once. The era of sexual impunity is over,” Ashefon said.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has directed public Primary and Secondary Schools affected and submerged in recent floods to proceed on a three weeks holiday beginning from Monday, October 14, 2019.


In a recent attacks by rain to overthrown major communities with flood in the riverine areas of the State.

The Ekiti State University Ado Ekiti non academic staff are currently protesting at the school, VAM News reports.

The protest is due to unpaid salary that led to the death of a staff yesterday.


The workers in their large number barricaded the entrance to press home their demands.


The workers were chanting solidarity songs and raining curses on management and government for subjecting them to hardship.


In a reports received by VAM reporter gathered that the school gate has been closed down till further notice.

NANS/JCC EKITI AXIS paid a courtesy visit to the management of the college of health science and technology, Ijero and expressed appreciation to the management of the school for the great deeds that has positively changed the school structure academically and developmentally.

The Students of Osun State College of Health Technology ILESA, engage in a peaceful protest today, 7th October 2019 which involved students from Environmental Health Department and Dental Therapy students, VAM Online News reports.


The protest which commence as early as 6:30am where students demonstrated their grievances and locked the entrance gate of the campus leading to the suspension of academic activities by the management as they lamented on their demands as the management have been procrastinating their demands since.


The demands of the students include;
The Immediate accreditation of Dental Therapy course, which was introduced by the college in 2015 as a 4 years course, that lack accreditation to enable the admitted students via 2015 to be able to graduate in 2019, proposed and expected year of graduation while the management doesn't even provide solution till date on the problem.


Immediate accreditation of Environmental Health Technology cadre, the course which was stated to be National Diploma ND and Higher National Diploma HND, which suffers accreditation from NATIONAL BOARD OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION NBTE to enables students that graduated with HND proceed with their colleagues from various institutions to participate in the National Youth Service corps.


Immediate accreditation and implementation of National Examination to Health Technicians Students. Whose course of study begins from 2years as an Health Assistant, then they will further with additional 2years in Health Technician. Wherefore both passing out examination is all about state examination.

During the protest, Journalist from Unique FM 103.1 and Voice Air Media Online News came for the coverage of the students and the students leaders engaged with them, stating their demand to them and they promised to air the lamentation on radio and Digital Newspaper.


The Department of State Security Service also came during the protest and engage the students to ask the status quo regarding protest, they stated their demand and after the deliberation. They left also with the spirit of solidarity.


The Nigeria police force from Ijamo station also came to intervene during the protest, which the students leader engage them with the reason on why they are protesting. They also left in solidarity.

An act of kindness rendered to a robbery victim by SP Celestina Kalu, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogudu Police Station in Lagos was on Monday rewarded by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who personally invited the kind-hearted police officer to the State House for honor and recognition.


Sanwo-Olu described SP. Celestina Kalu, a Superintendent of Police, as “a humane police officer”, saying her decision to save the life of an orphan, Friday Ajabor, shot by a two-man robbery gang in Ojota, was a “matchless trait of compassion”.




Ajabor, a 25-year-old orphan from Edo State, was at the Ojota with his friend about 8 pm on September 19 when two men of the underworld waylaid them, attempting to dispossess them of their valuables. 



They struggled with the robbers until the assailants overpowered them

Ajabor’s friend managed to escape from the scene with their personal effects, leaving him at the mercy of the robbers armed with a local pistol. For struggling with them, the robbers shot Ajabor in the bowel at a close range and disappeared from the scene.




A team of policemen from Ogudu Police Station led by SP. Kalu arrived at the scene about 30 minutes later, meeting the hapless victim in a pool of his blood. 



The policemen, it was learnt, rushed the victim to two hospitals where he was rejected for lack of bed space.



About 90 minutes after, the victim was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, where he underwent a series of surgery, the cost of which was personally defrayed by SP. Kalu.



This extra effort by the police officer saved the life of the orphan whose relatives could not be reached at the time he was admitted into the ICU.



The DPO’s act of kindness caught Gov. Sanwo-Olu’s attention after it went viral in the social media, VAM Online News gathered, prompting the Governor to reach out to the policewoman and the victim.





While honouring the DPO, Sanwo-Olu said SP. Kalu went beyond the limit of her official duty to save the life of the robbery victim, stressing that the policewoman’s effort was “the essence of public service” and “a true spirit of Lagos”.



The Governor said the policewoman demonstrated a rare example that should be emulated by every Lagosian, urging security operatives not to fall short of such act of kindness in the discharge of their duties to the citizens.



Sanwo-Olu said: “I am personally amazed by this rare act of kindness displayed by SP Celestina Kalu, who went beyond the official call of duty to save the life of a citizen using her personal resources. 



This is one of the essences of governance and public service when you have public officers going beyond the call of duty to render a helping hand to a fellow citizen.



“This is a rare trait of compassion by the DPO. We usually don’t get to witness such act of kindness, because every one of us is too overwhelmed by a myriad of personal challenges.


 

When we see law enforcement officers giving us reasons to be kind, we need to appreciate and recognise such action. 



This is why we are honouring Mrs Kalu this morning as our role model. This will encourage others to emulate this act of kindness.



“Not only that she stopped to help the victim at the point of death, but she also went ahead to make a financial commitment that ensured immediate treatment of the victim at the hospital. We are happy that this effort paid off because the victim is alive and he is recuperating well.”



Sanwo-Olu presented a special plaque bearing the official seal of the Lagos State Government to honour the DPO, while also taking over the cost of Ajabor’s surgery.

The Federal Polytechnic , Ado Ekiti was on Sunday shut indefinitely following a violent protest by students over the death of two of them, only one was identified.


Trouble began on the institution’s campus late Friday when two student reportedly complained of malaria.


They were said to have been rushed to the Polytechnic Health Centre for treatment, but their condition later became worse. They died in the early hours of Saturday, According to Punch Newspaper.



The Registrar of the institution, Mrs Sade Adediran, announced the immediate and indefinite closure of the school, Campus Reporters Media reports.


Adediran did not, however, confirm whether any student actually died at the Polytechnic Health Centre at that moment.


The statement warned that any student found on campus after the closure would be apprehended and made to face the consequences.


It was gathered from campus sources that the students on learning that their colleagues had died, quickly mobilised themselves, marched to the Health Centre and burnt it down.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi, has suspended a council chairmanship aspirant, Shafiu Abubakar, over unlawful utterances.



Alhaji Umaru Bakatara, Chairman of Zouro ward in Birnin Kebbi, disclosed this on Sunday in a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi.



”This is to inform you that following the unguided and disrespectful utterances by Shafiu Abubakar on the government of APC Kebbi State on Saturday through vision FM Radio interview, VAM has obtained.



”The party has therefore suspended him from the party and we wish to inform you that APC Zouro ward has disassociated itself and its not in any way in support of his actions.

The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has said the state government would begin the implementation of the new minimum wage of N30,000 from this month.


Fayemi said the decision was predicated on the need to improve the living standard of workers, especially teachers to be able to deliver the best and reposition the state to its pride of place as the education nerve centre of the country.



The Governor spoke at Oluyemi Kayode stadium in Ado Ekiti on Saturday during the 2019 celebration of the Teachers’ Day, with the theme: “Young Teachers, the Future of the Profession”.


At the event, Mr. Henry Olaoluwa Asubiojo of Amoye Grammar School and Tajudeen Olaoye of Anglican Primary School, Esun Ekiti and Mrs Mojisola Ehinafe of Technical School, Ado Ekiti, were awarded with cash price of N500,000 each, for emerging as the best teachers in the state.



Fayemi said he decided to inject new breeds of teachers into the state’s public schools, by recruiting 2,000 new teachers to safeguard the future of the state.

“We will commence payment of N30,000 to workers in Ekiti with effect from this month. We are determined to reward diligence because the workers, particularly our teachers have done the state proud.

The Committee on Automatic Pricing of Petroleum Products, which reviews and determines the prices of some petroleum products on a quarterly basis, has decided to reduce the sale price of three types of petrol products in the local market by 25 piasters per liter to become LE6.5 for octane 80 petrol, LE7.75 for octane 92, and LE8.75 for petrol 95.



The committee attributed its decision to the decline in the price of Brent barrel on the international market between July and September 2019 to an average of about US$62 per barrel, and the decline of the dollar price against the pound to an average of LE16.60.



International Monetary Fund (IMF) expert Subir Lall praised the decision of the automatic pricing committee to approve the reduction of prices of some petroleum products on the Egyptian market in light of the decline in the price of Brent barrel and the decline of the dollar against the Egyptian pound.
